Why do people hate Jean Moreau?

Does anyone else as a AFTG fan just go on to social media, AND get slapped in the face with a realization that people actually have the time and energy to hate on jean? No just me ☹️

Jean did not have enough lines in the book for me to hate that boy like I went through all three books and was just like there's nothing I really hated about jean if anything he was less noticeable at times, the more he spoke the more I loved him and the little things that were mentioned about him made me worried for that boy safety 😭

Like I truly did not believe that jean Moreau who was barely mentioned in the book was a bad person 🙌

Like when I go back I really don't think Jean went through the trouble of searching up neils past just because he pissed off Riko☹️ bro does not have enough freedom or time for that the only way that boy would actively go searching for information was if Riko told him and let's not forget get that the only why Riko could get close to Neil without causing an uproar/problem with the rest of the foxes was using jean as his little warning like I just knew Riko put him up to that no one's that level of petty🤣

And all of my time reading the book I didn't even think Jean was even rude 🥲

It felt like during the whole book he was trying too hard to be mean like in front of Riko, if it was up to Jean himself he most likely would blend into the background and wouldn't even speak the whole dinner.

Like jean actually research anything on Andrew's past? Jean does not care. Jean is too busy just trying to survive in the hell that he's lived in for years now.

sometimes i’m sooooo blown away by the fact that kevin is so smart……. like yes he is the fox with the highest grades despite being also the fox with the tightest training schedule and yes he canonically gets called an obsessive genius and yes the extra content explicitly says he is both very smart and very willing to teach people. but really i am thinking about kevin playing reporters like fiddles, jean calling kevin too good of a liar to ever let anything slip, kevin going up to andrew post-game and wordlessly helping cover up the fact andrew is off his medicine by pretending andrew’s racquet had broken (and then proceeding to discreetly crush it in his hand when the foxes gather around andrew), kevin living a lifetime of walking on the edge of riko’s knife, kevin hiding french, hiding thea, kevin spotting potential from a mile away, kevin who even riko thought was brilliant and sharp-tongued. yeah……..!

Kevin Day is Babygirl.

The upperclassmen want Neil to be Babygirl so badly that it literally kills them that he’s not. He’s just not. Nothing about him gives Babygirl. He only exudes feral street cat who was given a can of tuna on a good day and stuck around vibes. They hate it. They want him to be Babygirl so badly.

Eventually, though, when they finally accept it, and Neil has literally done everything possible to fend them off, they realize Neil is not Babygirl. But then, from out of the shadows, emerges Kevin Babygirl Day. They’d been so busy trying to make it work with Neil they had been missing what was right in front of them this whole time. They’d failed to see what the monsters already knew. Kevin Day is The Babygirl.

Of course, the only person who acknowledges this fact within the monster circle is the monster himself, Andrew Minyard, but once it’s been seen, it cannot be unseen. Kevin goes from being Andrew’s Babygirl to the team's Babygirl. And Kevin not knowing but responding positively to it anyway makes it so much better. The sudden praise and care that comes with it? The attention and affectionate indulgence? He’s unsure why everyone’s started being so nice to him, but he’s not complaining.

Don’t get me wrong, when Kevin gets in a mood, they all steer clear, and they still fight with him when they want to, but he’s just so precious. How could they ever stay mad? And the crazy thing is that Kevin is better for it. He’s happier and softer around them. He learns to feel not only safe but comfortable and relaxed with them. His bad moods don't last so long and he's genuinely a lot happier. He doesn’t need Andrew or Neil by his side to feel protected anymore.

The upperclassmen’s inside joke unintentionally becomes what helps Kevin heal and open up as a person rather than remain the hollowed-out shell from The Nest. Kevin thrives under their attention and praise, so much so that he starts to seek it out subconsciously. He gets mopey and upset when they don’t acknowledge him. It actually hurts his feelings when they ignore him. He actively becomes a better person, someone who is healing because they so positively love him. All because they jokingly Babygirlified him.

So anyway. Yeah. Kevin Day is Babygirl.

It feels like a good moment to reread AFTG once more

Andrew Minyard retires his armbands on a random Tuesday one night twenty years after sophomore year of college.

He had put his knives down a long time ago but kept the bands as one last defense. He was looking around his living room, tv volume on low playing some old exy game, couch cluttered with mismatched blankets and pillows, walls covered in pictures of everyone he bothered to care about, mostly empty cups on the coffee table, and the sounds of laughter echoing from the kitchen where his family, friends, and the love of his life had all congregated sometime ten minutes ago…

And isn’t that funny? Andrew never thought he would admit to falling in love, to caring about others. But here he is.

He walks over to the kitchen, leaning on the wall of the entrance. He hears Neil say something stupid (as he usually does) and locks eyes with his twin, them rolling their eyes simultaneously. That’s something he didn’t think he’d get to have either; a real and healthy relationship with Aaron.

Maybe time really does heal after all.

He feels himself smile- something he has done more and more as the years fly by- and realizes that he no longer hided behind walls, hasn’t for a very long time.

He slips off his armbands for the last time, placing them on the counter and moving over to Neil, wrapping his arms around his waist. Neil leans back into him.

Later, once everyone has gone back to their hotels or crashed in their guest bedrooms, Andrew will walk to his and Neil’s room and pull out the shoebox with his blades from the top of the closet, and Neil will walk in with Andrew’s armbands in hand, and they will fold them nicely and place them in the box, closing it and putting it back up again. Neil will smile, and Andrew will smile right back, and they will go to bed with nobody at the wall because their bed was in the middle of the room, and they will be safe.

They have been safe for a very long time.

neil coming back home after his morning run with breakfast sandwiches and two cups of coffee from a nearby indie coffeeshop. he puts everything down on the kitchen counter, trusting sir and king to behave while he goes to shower his sweat away. he hears muffled steps upstairs so he knows andrew is up and will soon come investigate what neil brought back. neil is climbing the stairs when he freezes.

he hears it, loud and clear.

neil blinks, and then he hears it again.

it’s not the first time he hears andrew laugh. it is still a very rare occurence, but it happens. this time though, it’s a real, wholehearted laugh.

neil silently continues his ascension upstairs and peeks through the half open door of their bedroom and freezes again. he sees andrew, grinning with pure delight, as sir and king fight with the bedsheets he was trying to change. they chase each other around, their tails poofed out while they pounce in the sheets like two little demons. andrew is holding the end of the bedsheet, watching with amusement and then he laughs again as sir dives into the sheet but king jumps on her. they both dash out of the room chasing each other. andrew looks up to find neil looking at him with adoration.

andrew tries but fails to school his features while he can now put the clean sheets on again. neil takes the few steps that separates them and kisses his temple tenderly, warmth seeping into every single one of his bones. andrew leans into him and neil holds his waist in silence. andrew has come a long way, and neil is so damn proud of how far he has made it. he helps him with the sheet but before long the cats come back for round 2. neil laughs at them as they both get all tangled up and is quickly joined by andrew. they watch them play until eventually they calm down and remember they want their morning kibbles

POV the foxes have a sourdough starter that they share together and it’s quite literally alive.

-It bubbles and gurgles when it’s not fed and more then once it has spilled over board and taken up accommodation in fox tower as a new living life form. Abby gave it to them the year after Baltimore because she thought that it would be like those sort of flour baby social experiments, that would give them more responsibility and bring the team closer together. But now it’s genuinely become like a mascot to the foxes, they all adore it with their whole hearts. They even have a rotating schedule where they all have to participate to keep the sourdough alive, it’s like a beloved team pet (although ofc wymack can’t understand the hype, but ‘as long as it makes them happy and no one’s trying to stab anyone’)

-Every month a ‘chosen one’ is randomly chosen from a hat, and that person has to try to make a better sourdough than the one made the month before. After they’ve spent hours slaving away in their dingy college kitchen, everyone gets to try a slice so that they can judge it. They keep a score up on their bulletin board of who makes the best one, (Number 1 is Andrew, and Aaron is so jealous because he’s number 2, so the twinyards now have a rivalry over who’s the better bread maker (hint: It’s Andrew because he’s got bigger hands))

Made this at 3 am so don’t judge too harshly I just wanted to give the foxes an excuse to eat fresh bread

Does anyone go back and read AFTG and realize in that scene where Neil finally gives Andrew his name that Andrew wasn't trying to be mean just because Neil made a jab at his fear of heights or is it just me over analyzing?

I feel like that's Andrew's way of just being straightforward and trying to get to know Neil not trying to hurt him but trying to understand him and even then he gives Neil the option without even saying it to not answer him like after Neil gives him his father's name and you just slides in a little comment "you don't look like a Nathan..." bro couldn't just outright ask what neils real name was because he knows it's a touchy subject for him in this way he gave Neil the option of just not answering him but instead neil didn't just leave off with "because I'm not" instead he gave it all "because I'm not, I'm Nathaniel"

I really believe that Andrew was just at that point where his curiosity had just been festering up for a little too long and he just wanted to outright ask him but instead he danced around and gave neil the option of just walking away and not answering him, But in a way he was making a jab he just didn't think Neil would actually answer him.

Because Andrew had already asked his one question already so Neil didn't have to answer him he could have just said his turn was up but instead Neil went the route of I'm willingly giving you this because I want to, a free truth and it's not a part of the game🥹

Right after Riko smashed his hand and he couldn’t play the game he was literally born to play.

Him doing his best to be different with the foxes. Handling them with more care than Riko did with him. Putting their health and well-being first.

The boyfriend being the foxes, and Kevin hiding or simply just ignoring his own feelings and traumas so he doesn’t burden them. So he doesn’t distract them from Exy. So he doesn’t hurt them. Even when he wakes up and feels like throwing up at just the idea of holding a stick, at stepping on the court, at becoming Riko, Kevin loves, will always love, Exy, but it is the source of all of his trauma and that will always make him sad.

Changing his tattoo. Taking Exy back and making it his own. Becoming the Queen rather than Rikos number two. Becoming Kevin Day on his own.
