My sort of maybe embarrassing “late to the game” thing I’m learning now is how to tell if oil has gone bad.

I feel like most other foods have obvious visual tells like mold or they end up smelling foul and obviously bad. But I was googling about oil and the internet says “if it smells like crayons, it’s bad” which would not have been my first guess. And I tested it out on my somewhat old sesame oil and was like “by god, I would describe this as smelling like crayons”

Anyway protip if your old oil smells kinda like crayons it’s probably no good 🖍️

#which is a shame since I have a recipe that needs sesame oil #so now I have to go get more sesame oil #and I like the good kind which the nearby grocery store doesn’t carry

we don't talk enough about the very special type of hell that is walking into a tiny independent store that sells, like, artisanal cheeses or hand-thrown pottery or vegan face creams made out of dried nasturtium petals, and realising almost immediately that a) you are the only person in there, b) everything is ludicrously out of your price range, and c) you can't leave because an employee has just approached you with a big smile and said, "hi, welcome to Martha-Jane's Quirky Ceramics Emporium! what can i help you with today?"

This is probably Too Niche, but to the vivid dreamers out there: do you ever get nostalgic for a place from your dreams that isn't real? I have recurring locations in my dreams that just. don't exist. And I find myself thinking about them or having "memories" about them even though they don't exist and never have. But they're real in my heart even though I'll never go there.

(tell me about these places in the tags, I'm so curious)

#the house along the highway with all the junk around it that I walk up to but never get to go in #the lake with the houses around it where I walk out onto the little fishing pier and watch the swans every time #the alternate version of the trails at my mom's house where a stream green with algae runs along the railroad tracks #the big mall where most of the lights are off and many of the stores haven't been restock in a long time and there's a creepy thrift store #and I know malls (esp abandoned malls) are common in dreams but this is the same one every time and I'm aware of that in the dream #a yellow victorian house with lots of trees and a fence out front. there's a park nearby. I've always been older in this dream #and it's always MY house. and I'm always so surprised I live there in a self-aware kind of way. I long for that house so bad.

Weekly photo blog update! Ramble about these and life under the cut 😊

We found this amazing collection of books from 1945 about historical fashion second hand for super cheap! It's illustrated, in color, and in excellent condition, I'm over the moon 🥰 also the antique book fair is back in the city and we can't wait to go visit, I'll probably go next week so I'll share more later! although I really need to stop getting books, I've been out of bookshelf space for months now and they already took over half of the dinning table 😆

This little shop in the photos is where we get spices and dried fruit and it's very pretty so I thought I would share

Today we went out for sushi to one of our favourite places! It's venezuelan-japanese fusion and it's so so good, the drink is papelon con limon and I highly recommend it!

And last are these amazing thrift finds!! The skirt and sweater are perfect aaaaa I'm going to style so many autumn outfits soon after the weird heat wave passes, I can't wait!!

On a more depressing note, yesterday was my father's first birthday since his death a couple of months ago, and I also saw his tomb for the first time, my aunt sent me a picture at the graveyard and it's such a strange sight, seeing his name on a cross on the ground feels unreal. I try not to think about it too much, it's like if I stop running or look back it will catch up with me. We lit a candle last night with Nicolas and talked about him, it's getting easier to remember the good over the bad with time so I'm happy about that 😊

I hope everyone is having a great beginning of autumn!
