Edward Lee Jones (born February 23, 1951) known as Ed “Too Tall” Jones, is a former football player who was a defensive end for 15 seasons (1974–78, 1980–89) for the Dallas Cowboys. In 1979, he left football to attempt a career in professional boxing.
He was born in Jackson, Tennessee. He attended Merry High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He played only three football games because his high school did not support the sport until his senior year.
His basketball skills earned him All-America honors and scholarship offers from several Division I (NCAA) programs. He had offers from Major League Baseball teams to play first base in their farm systems.
He fought a Golden Gloves boxing match, recording a knockout of his opponent in less than a minute. He stopped shortly after that when his basketball coach read an article about the fight and made him choose between basketball and boxing.
He accepted a scholarship from Tennessee State University to play basketball, but left the team after two seasons, to concentrate on playing football. He became a two-time All-American defensive lineman, playing on a team that lost only two games, en route to winning the HBCU football national championships in 1971 and 1973.
He ranks third in school history in sacks in a season with 12 and fifth in career sacks with 38. In 1999, he was voted to the 50th Anniversary Senior Bowl All-Time Team. In 2013, he was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame.
He was a guest referee at the World Wrestling Federation’s WrestleMania 2 pay-per-view His acting credits on television include appearing as himself on Diff’rent Strokes and Married With Children. He starred in a GEICO commercial that initially aired in late 2009. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

CFFC 126: Alonzo Turner vs. CJ LaFragola
By, ShezAnEnigma
Tumblr media
In the highly-anticipated bout between two rising stars of the MMA world, Alonzo Turner and CJ LaFragola stepped into the cage to display their impeccable skills, honed by their impressive college wrestling backgrounds. Both fighters brought significant records to the table. Turner with a pro MMA record of 2-0 and an amateur tally of 8-1, showed his varied ways to clinch a win. LaFragola, with a 5-0 amateur record and a 1-0 pro record, showcased his impressive ability to dominate his opponents, as reflected by his 5 unanimous decision victories.
Round One: The bell rang, and Turner wasted no time, charging out with a barrage of punches that quickly knocked LaFragola down. For a moment, it seemed like Turner might finish the fight early, but LaFragola’s resilience shone through. Using his national qualifier wrestling background, LaFragola managed to reverse the position, pinning Turner beneath him. What followed was a grueling, four-minute power struggle, with both fighters jostling for dominance, sneaking in jabs and strikes wherever they found an opening. The audience was on the edge of their seats, witnessing the raw determination of both fighters. As the round neared its conclusion, Turner, living up to his nickname 'The Relentless,' landed the final strike just as the bell rang.
Round Two: As the fighters circled each other, Turner appeared slightly off-balance, possibly still feeling the effects of the intense ground battle in the first round. Sensing an opportunity, LaFragola made his move. He surged forward, taking Turner down. However, Turner's NCAA All American background was evident as he prevented LaFragola from fully controlling him on the mat. Pinned against the ring side, Turner showed his versatility. Instead of panicking, he worked his arms, jostling with LaFragola. Landing jabs and punches to LaFragola’s back, he managed to divert his opponent’s attention away from his neck. Seizing the moment, Turner swiftly secured his arms around LaFragola's neck, locking in a guillotine choke.  LaFragola battled valiantly, refusing to give up, but the pressure was too much. At 1 minute and 49 seconds into the round, LaFragola tapped out.
It was a thrilling display of skill, endurance, and strategy from both fighters, underscoring the reason why they are two promising talents in the MMA world. This match exemplified the essence of MMA: unpredictability, resilience, and sheer will to win.

Wrestling: No Longer a Mystery
There's a feeling that in the event the truth does eventually emerge, it may upend everything we know. Becoming learning-focused means putting the procedure ahead of the item. Sometimes, you've got to do things that aren't that fun to achieve your objectives. Well, you have to drill repeatedly if you would like moves to develop into second nature. You've got a particular possibility to play such a video game all by yourself and also have a considerable quantity of fun in this approach. It's about disciplinebeing disciplined enough to plow through the procedure and make it take place. What You Need to Do About Wrestling Before You Miss Your Chance You don't need to be worried about it because this completely damage is not going to bring it any result. Your dog is not going to understand that they're managing a little child who doesn't wish to hurt him. Simple, there's no magic pill to earn the concussion go away. Periodization is frequently associated with weight training but can be utilized to train other athletic attributes also. Such exercises are for when you're attempting to shed weight so as to be in a specific competitive wrestling category. If you must cut weight that you should begin a couple weeks or a month in advance if necessary. Choosing Wrestling There are lots of shady dealers out there. Their chemistry for a team is legendary. The matches are predetermined but of course that's the whole intention of the company. It doesn't matter the apathy both of these candidates are satisfied with. It was also a very simple way to be certain that he'd dominate over his former Shield brothers, aligning with the men and women in charge, to receive the best matches and the opponents with the highest-profiles. The individual was turned over to the right authorities. The Unusual Secret of Wrestling The full point of this exercise is to have a rise from the crowd and it is irrelevant whether it's cheers or boos. His solution was supposed to create his own form of the barbaric duo in Demolition. The reason this is sensible to know about is mainly because you might find that yourself bored playing the identical game and having options would be wise so that you're able to alter the kind of game you're playing. The thought is simple, you beat the defenders till they are not able to get up and attack you. I simply don't like that he constantly receives a shot. Major man smooth like a large baby penguin. In addition, I hope not one of the regulars end it. Sasha pulls Becky from the ring. Valkyrie Spears Grace on the ground. Wrestling - the Conspiracy Writing a book isn't easy, but neither is wrestling. We'll also be running a complete live blog of the function which is going to be available here. We did not receive the story we were promised. All these wrestling stars have various trademarks most especially the way that they dress and how they smack their opponents. Owens is only short of a million at the right time of writing. Whether you like him or not you need to admit he is extremely gifted and definitely looks the component of a top superstar. Wrestling is among the only sports that everyone on the planet can understand. Every one of these sports are going to have its exclusive demands. In earlier times athletes weren't too concerned about a concussion. A Startling Fact about Wrestling Uncovered Whatever might be the experience, jot down all of the information down. Ideally, in case you have chosen the proper exercises, participants ought to be able to experience a complete cycle 3 times. Another thing to think about is that bad parents don't always raise bad children. Inside this section you must jot down all of the critical abilities, specifically linked to leadership activities, communication skills, teaching, together with initiative skills etc.. The program is composed of a string of exercises each performed at various stations in the gym. Always believe in yourself and you can also reach your objectives. We're not there to just enforce the rules. Make certain you inspect thoroughly and properly maintain to guarantee safety. If you take a close look at practice in Russia, every practice at each club throughout the country has a particular structure to it, while the US is all around the place. The Foolproof Wrestling Strategy When you speak about wrestling most individuals think about World Wrestling Entertainment also referred to as WWE. Therefore, attempting to use periodization for wrestling may appear impractical. Women wrestlers who tune out all of the horny boy stuff which goes about. Wrestling is so closely associated with life, he explained. Brock Lesnar is easily among the most protected Superstars in WWE history and he's got a WWE huge contract which likewise will come with limited dates. When it has to do with wrestling, it's often in comparison to the UFC and NCAA wrestling. A whole lot of wrestlers have a tendency to jump around to and from other promotions but The Undertaker proved to be a massive portion of WWE for his whole run there, 27 decades. WWE serves not just to promote fights, yet to entertain by storytelling. WWE however isn't the only wrestling promotion on the landscape. The Argument About Wrestling In some cases, the defender is equipped to flatten the attacker to the mat like a pancake, thus the name. You are going to be more able to dodge or slip from a tight hold. If you keep in 1 spot, you're putting yourself into a place to be taken down by your opponent or pushed from the mat. A previous alternative is to construct a structure to hold out the costume in the correct form. If you prefer, you even can trample it to the ground. In 1848, Exbroyat produced a big rule that forbade holds beneath the waist. Sacrifice often goes together with dedication. Wrestling to a degree of greatness requires commitments from all possible pieces of your entire body and mind. Unfortunately, it's not stored within the body. Choosing Good Wrestling You need to have a fair command over the neighborhood language at least languages. Inside my opinion, you should attempt to keep periodization simple. Not lots of expressions, usually. It leveled me up indirectly in various ways too. You've got a particular possibility to play such a video game all by yourself and also have a considerable quantity of fun in this approach. This will permit you to bring another facet of the sport in your arsenal of abilities and techniques. The Foolproof Wrestling Strategy Folk wrestling styles aren't recognized as international trends of wrestling by UWW. If your kid is younger or his school does not own a wrestling group, you can discover a regional independent wrestling club. Outlast the competition with the proper wrestling headgear. On the flip side, more than 1 macrocycle might be used over the course of a wrestling season as you could have more than one significant competition which you want to peak for. There's a whole lot of wrestling fan denial. This won't be the case with AEW on a roster that already boasts a number of the best wrestlers on earth and Cody. Every WWE Superstar ought to be given time to come up with their character and prove they are capable, regardless of what the circumstance. The Divas can not merely kick but in the ring, but a lot of them can even manage different wrestlers and even run companies regarding the area of wrestling. WWE however isn't the only wrestling promotion on the landscape. The Ultimate Wrestling Trick Post called that a minimal point. You may think about where in NYC you wish to go to narrow things down. Provided that the story lives on TV, it's entertaining alone. Meanwhile Terri Gold gets all of the air. Be certain to speak to his coach for anything else you will want to understand. WWE's inability to develop transcendent icons is a step over the real issue they are too stubborn to handle. Moreover, autograph events are often held in order to permit fans to fulfill their favorite wrestling superstars up-close and personal. Not necessary, but you need to be related to sports. In earlier times athletes weren't too concerned about a concussion. Life, Death, and Wrestling If you want it, you might have a try! Sandow marks a terrific pop. If you wind up with the incorrect dimensions, just inform us and we'll help you exchange it for the best size. If you have feet, we've got a full array of wrestling shoes in all styles, colours and sizes for you to select from. This is just a slice of cloth that's wrapped around like underwear. To receive added information on john cena cardboard cutout please Visit Website. Remember, wrestling shoes are notoriously tricky to discover the ideal fit. However, while his brothers continue to be around, we're never likely to love Roman Reigns. Valkyrie Spears Grace on the ground. What You Must Know About Wrestling He wore face paint, he'd spit mist into the opinion of his opponent. He's also a fresher face who's on the up. When the wrestler has developed a good square stance, he or she is able to work on a staggered stance, also referred to as an offensive stance. A previous alternative is to construct a structure to hold out the costume in the correct form. Good stance plays an essential part in enabling a wrestler to stay stable on the mat. Some might envision themselves standing on the cap of the podium in 1st location. Grip training should only be carried out at the conclusion of a workout. The Death Mask's present moveset is largely designed with quick, snap maneuvers that could surprise opponents from unexpected angles and offer impact without using an exhaustive quantity of strength. Unfortunately, it's not stored within the body. Why Almost Everything You've Learned About Wrestling Is Wrong You'd have to eat plenty of red meat to coincide with a single serving of powdered creatine, but it is surely present. Athletes ought to be given only sufficient time between sets to get properly set for the exercise they're going to execute. Proteins help to construct muscle. If you need to earn weight, plan ahead, and attempt to get rid of body fat, not muscle. You may have to work on technique initially and boost your volume and intensity as time passes. So it is crucial to receive a steady dose of protein each and every day. The Key to Successful Wrestling Even in the event the early phases of a career, it comes down to the company which is kept. Their chemistry for a team is legendary. It may sound easy, but by spending a little quantity of the match posing you will greatly enhance the caliber of the photos taken of you. But these are all necessary so as to thrill the spectators. 1 important element is to be certain your child regularly mixes with different children. Not exactly my 1st alternative, but it's better than other choices. A Startling Fact about Wrestling Uncovered It is possible to learn that information online and discover what is there. Ideally, in case you have chosen the proper exercises, participants ought to be able to experience a complete cycle 3 times. If you're uncertain about whether it's the case that you or your little one should wrestle, this guide delivers a number of reasons which should help you create your final choice. In the last few years, mixed martial arts have come to be ever more popular for kids and adults of all ages. However, because the years went on I started to comprehend what teaching Middle School children is about. This sport was once thought to be crucial training for most Greek soldiers. We're not there to just enforce the rules. Make certain you inspect thoroughly and properly maintain to guarantee safety. We are constantly looking for volunteers to assist with the other districts. The Tried and True Method for Wrestling in Step by Step Detail Meal replacement drinks are a lot better since you don't need to consider what foods to eat along with them. Athletes ought to be given only sufficient time between sets to get properly set for the exercise they're going to execute. As it takes more time to digest complex carbohydrates, you feel fuller longer and don't will need to eat as much. A kid should never be required to ask what things to eat to shed weight. Such exercises are for when you're attempting to shed weight so as to be in a specific competitive wrestling category. If you're really cutting lots of weight this season, you might not be in a position to obtain strength because the body requires a surplus of calories from food to be able to feed the muscle. Life After Wrestling To retire a legend and act as though you're still an excellent guy to the fans is much more. It needs to be the proper moment, it needs to be the best product and it must be the proper distributor. It sold lots of magazines. Meanwhile Terri Gold gets all of the air. Be certain to speak to his coach for anything else you will want to understand. Whether you like him or not you need to admit he is extremely gifted and definitely looks the component of a top superstar. If there's a school that the business endorses, athletes may benefit from attending the suggested wrestling school in order to enhance their odds of stardom. Not necessary, but you need to be related to sports. Some athletes find it can help to meditate or listen to hypnosis recordings to have them focused and prepared to wrestle. The Wrestling Game So long as you receive a reaction, its working. The only way we are presented with a challenge is when our child gives evidence in the shape of problems she's involved in. Well some of us will try to inform you. I really like that folks love things. The people that are in charge are simply not interested in letting them tell great stories. Wrestling - the Conspiracy In some cases, the defender is equipped to flatten the attacker to the mat like a pancake, thus the name. You are going to be more able to dodge or slip from a tight hold. It is an excellent means to score 5 points when you're losing or to have an essential pin. To put it simply, it's intimidating. The conventional square stance, often known as the defensive stance, is generally the sturdier, but it's also harder to move from quickly. You have to be in control to receive a pin. And what the Death Mask is a person who won't care about stepping toes so as to receive his due. The Death Mask's present moveset is largely designed with quick, snap maneuvers that could surprise opponents from unexpected angles and offer impact without using an exhaustive quantity of strength. Wrestling headgear is mostly utilized to reduce cauliflower ear brought on by repeat ear trauma. Facts, Fiction and Wrestling They get the itch they visit a different business and keep working. Your dog is only going to take note that this modest human is making him feel uncomfortable. The reason this is sensible to know about is mainly because you might find that yourself bored playing the identical game and having options would be wise so that you're able to alter the kind of game you're playing. Bubba finally receives a tag and downloads. I simply don't like that he constantly receives a shot. I don't understand how to demonstrate the respect I feel this man deserves, because certainly once you start to see a legend begin to deteriorate it's challenging to keep in mind the man he was. In addition, I hope not one of the regulars end it. Sasha pulls Becky from the ring. Then consider your wrestling shoes. Vital Pieces of Wrestling When that occurs, the wrestler wins the match. Again, victory is all but inevitable. There are a few great wrestlers at those weights, Cleary explained. Braun angry Big Dog not wish to have match. While Lesnar will be searching for revenge, there are a number of other clashes in the night to seek. A whole lot of wrestlers have a tendency to jump around to and from other promotions but The Undertaker proved to be a massive portion of WWE for his whole run there, 27 decades. The Divas can not merely kick but in the ring, but a lot of them can even manage different wrestlers and even run companies regarding the area of wrestling. Lets look at a number of the WWE roster. Where to Find Wrestling Have men and women in your community speak for your benefit. It is possible to also do a search for people in your region. Taking your child from the school environment to teach her at home is a substantial step, and one which shouldn't be taken without full consideration of the implications. I'm celebrating those who do. For the 69th consecutive calendar year, we hope you take pleasure in the action! When it has to do with chiropractic businesses, going to the one you like and enjoy heading to is crucial. What's more, you can want to get a less intense practice the evening prior to a significant competition so you're recovered and fresh to wrestle hard the following day. Deciding on what's most effective for you. We are constantly looking for volunteers to assist with the other districts. Ok, I Think I Understand Wrestling, Now Tell Me About Wrestling! As an investor, you wish to purchase stocks with the maximum probability of succeeding. Absolutely, price of admission is totally well worth it. It was a means to hedge his bets, the quickest way to get to the top. It doesn't matter the apathy both of these candidates are satisfied with. 1 important element is to be certain your child regularly mixes with different children. The individual was turned over to the right authorities.

The Brock Lesnar Problem
Tumblr media
The Conqueror. The Beast Incarnate. The Mayor of Suplex City. The Next Big Thing. The One in 21-1. Brock Lesnar has been called many things in his illustrious career. You’d think, with all of his accomplishments and nicknames, you’d think Brock’s got a pretty good thing going for him. And while that is true, it doesn’t change the fact that Brock is pretty much the worst thing in WWE right now. And in this post, we’re going to be taking in an depth look into The Brock Lesnar Problem. Before I can go into that however, I feel like I need to point a few things out. First of all of course that this is my opinion, so if Brock is your favorite wrestler and can’t handle me criticizing him, then this probably isn’t for you. That being said, what even is the Brock Lesnar Problem? It’s the fact that despite 12 years in total in this business his wrestling ability if anything has diminished, he’s World Champion and hardly defends it, much less show up for work. And he’s paid way too much money for not doing his job. That being said, now we can dive in.
March 28, 2002. A triple threat match between Al Snow, Maven, and Spike Dudley took place on Raw, for no real reason besides being a filler. At least, that’s what everyone thought. Halfway through the match, Brock Lesnar made his debut, brutalizing all three men in a way we’d soon learn only Brock Lesnar can. Accompanied by Paul Heyman, Brock practically came out of nowhere, having spent two years in WWE’s developmental territory OVW, but actually previously known as a NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Champion. (“Real” wrestling). Brock would go on to be one of the fastest rising stars in WWE, winning the 2002 King of the Ring and beating The Rock to become WWE Champion within five months of his debut. He would win the title two more times after that, beating the likes of Kurt Angle for his second and third titles. Now this Brock Lesnar was entertaining. His wrestling style was unique, his finisher was devastating, he had a ton of great matches, the company was behind him; so what happened? Well, in my opinion, it all started at Wrestlemania XIX, and that Shooting Star Press.
If you’re a wrestling fan, you know what I’m talking about. If you’re not, then I’m impressed you’ve read this far. Basically what happened was during Kurt Angle and Brock’s match at Wrestlemania, Brock attempted to perform his old OVW finisher, a shooting star press. Now I’m including a picture of Brock with this piece, and I want you to tell me why that was an awful idea. Brock fell about six inches short, landed right on his face, and concussed himself. Brock finished the match, because it’s Brock and he doesn’t feel pain like people do, and won. However, this was the first time Brock was severely injured, and I think that’s when he realized he didn’t like that very much. We never saw him attempt the move ever again, and we saw him protect himself a lot more from then on. However, Brock couldn’t stop being rough and tough on his co workers, that would defeat the purpose of his whole character, but his refusal to take as much as he gave was the beginning of Brock’s… condition. Brock’s who is now getting larger, and his boredom with wrestling suffers because of it.
After losing his third WWE Championship to Eddie Guerrero thanks to help from Goldberg, Brock began feuding with the WCW legend. Note that now Brock had become bored with WWE, he’s already won the world title, King of the Ring, main evented Wrestlemania, and won the Royal Rumble (the four biggest accomplishments in WWE at the time, three of them still being so), and anything else seemed lesser to him. So a match between Goldberg and Brock was set for Wrestlemania XX. It had all the makings of a history maker, two of the most dominant performers in wrestling history squaring off, with special guest referee Stone Cold Steve Austin. But then it was released Goldberg was retiring. And then it was leaked that Brock was leaving as well. For eleven years, that match was possible the most hated Wrestlemania match in history, fans booing both men for “selling out”. They both left, and Brock moved on to things like the NFL, where he never got to play. Then he  returned to wrestling, and became one of the few Americans to win the IGWP Heavyweight Championship at New-Japan Pro Wrestling. He also squared off with his old rival Kurt Angle, who defeated him for said title. Brock Lesnar once again retired from wrestling, and made his way to UFC and won the heavyweight title there.
Fast forward to 2012. John Cena lost to The Rock at Wrestlemania XXVIII. And Brock Lesnar returns, dropping the leader of the Cenation and making a resounding return to WWE. Vince asked Brock to come back, Brock now somehow becoming a bigger draw than he was before, and being more dominant than ever. Something was different now though. He didn’t show up as often. Brock’s moveset, while limited, was entertaining, and he didn’t wrestle enough for people to notice. He had some decent matches with Triple H, John Cena, and CM Punk, but all we really wanted was to watch him beat people up the way only he could. Now the problem has increased. Brock is getting paid more for less work, and he knows it. He’s a big name, and he knows he gets paid no matter what. Slowly, Brock starts getting lazier. And this climaxes at Wrestlemania XXX, when Brock beats The Undertaker’s undefeated streak at The Showcase of the Immortals. Brock now realizes that he is one of the most high profile names in wrestling. And he abuses the absolute shit out of it. Several months later at Summerslam, Brock beats John Cena in one of the most one sided main events in WWE history, delivering a cringe inducing sixteen german suplexes to John, who got practically no offense in. I’ll admit when this happened, I was hyped, and so were a lot of other people. Brock was champion, which meant we’d get to see Brock kick ass all the time. At least, that’s what we thought. But then Brock didn’t show up four five fucking months! If you’re champion, then you need to defend said championship, not disappear with it for months at a time.
But we were saved at Wrestlemania 31, when Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to beat Brock and Roman Reigns for the title. Brock disappeared for awhile after that, and we soon forgot about his poor excuse of a title reign. Brock began feuding with The Undertaker in a really fun rivalry, he entered the Royal Rumble but lost, it was really fun to watch. It’s Wrestlemania time again, and we know Brock has got a spot on the card. And it’s in a street fight, with Dean Ambrose. Everyone was so excited for this match, Dean was getting these weapons from WWE legends, Brock was beating Dean up as much as he could but Dean kept getting back up, this match had all the potential to be Match of the Year. But then it fully set in: Brock’s laziness. The match was a bore to watch, hardly any weapons were used and it was disappointingly short, much to the dismay of fans. Brock stuck to two moves, the F-5 and the german suplex. To this day it’s the only two moves he knows. On the Stone Cold podcast, Dean declared that the reason the match failed was because Brock, and I quote: “had no desire to entertain, I had all these great ideas and I was met with laziness.” The interview spread like wildfire, and more wrestlers voiced their displeasure with Brock and how unfairly they were treated compared to him. Brock disappeared again however, and soon we forgot about the whole thing. Note that in my opinion, this next stretch in Brock’s career nothing really eventful happens, he beats Mark Hunt in a one off UFC match but it gets overturned because he failed a drug test, faced Randy Orton at Summerslam and damn near killed the man after splitting his head open.
We are now at Survivor Series 2016, and it’s the rematch of the century. Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar. Goldberg hadn’t wrestled in twelve years, the last time he did was when he beat Brock, did he still have it? The answer we soon learned, was no. These men had three encounters from 2016 to 2017, and each match was slightly more disappointing and sub par than the last. First Goldberg beats Brock in a minute and twenty-six seconds, which is forgivable because holy crap someone squashed Brock and also the first time he’s been pinned in three years. Then Goldberg eliminates Brock from the 2017 Royal Rumble in a couple of seconds, for no real reason. Then it climaxes at Wrestlemania, this time for the WWE Universal Championship. I think it’s safe to say that nobody was really looking forward to this match. Goldberg made it clear he only remembered his two finishers, and Brock’s laziness and WWE’s refusal to have him show up was well known. The match was several minutes of the old men tossing each other aropund and hitting their finishers, with Brock winning the title.
And we now have the Brock Lesnar problem at its worst. Brock hardly shows up to defend the title, and when he does, we’re promised absolute dream matches. Brock vs Braun Strowman, Brock vs Samoa Joe, and every time it’s the same thing. Paul Heyman hypes up Brock for three weeks, Brock finally shows up to brawl with his opponent, and the match is just a couple minutes of Brock hitting suplexes and his finisher, and then disappearing again. It’s been over a year now, and this hasn’t changed. Brock demands so much for just an appearance, and everytime WWE seems to stop tolerating his shitty behavior and unreasonable demands in his contract, he threatens to leave the company. Vince doesn’t want to lose his big draw, so he renews Brock’s contract. But what is the point of having a big draw if he only shows up a couple times a year, and wrestles even less? Just last Monday, Seth Rollins defended the Intercontinental Championship more times in a month than Brock has even wrestled the past year.
So how do we fix the issue? I personally see two options. The first one is have Brock lose the title and just have him wrestle in some high profile matches throughout the year. This keeps Brock’s pay high and lets Vince keep his ‘big draw.’ However, it doesn’t change the fact that Brock A, can’t wrestle for crap, and B, is just downright lazy. Not to mention his ego is going to tell him that if he’s not champion, he’s wasting his time. So in my opinion, the better option is to cut the company’s losses, and let Brock go. He has absolutely zero passion for the company or the fans, he’s lazy and mediocre in the ring (and that’s being generous in my opinion.), and he just doesn’t bring anything really special to the company besides a few extra dollars, but how much are they really making when Brock asks so much for an appearance? I mean if you kept pushing guys like Seth, or Finn Balor, or even Braun Strowman, they will bring just as much, if not more than Lesnar. Because this will only get worse the longer it goes, and if this doesn’t change, the demands will get crazier and we’ll be lucky to see Brock or the Universal Championship ever again. And that my friends is the Brock Lesnar problem.

COVID-19 hits the sports world on the field, and in the wallet
In Grand Forks, the North Dakota hockey crew was ranked atop the school polls and barreling towards what may have been a showdown with Bemidji State, Minnesota Duluth — the Bulldogs had been looking for a 3rd consecutive NCAA crown — and Minnesota State, Mankato, all of which had been purple sizzling within the second half of the 2019-20 season. None of them obtained an opportunity to show what they might do on the ice, and there was even a thought that the Combating Hawks ought to contemplate hanging a black banner of their rink in reminiscence of what may have been this system’s ninth nationwide championship season.
Tumblr media
In Eden Prairie, Minn., the boys basketball crew was 28-0, ranked first in Minnesota and within the prime 10 nationally, and headed for the state match. Then they realized that similar to that, the season was over because the state and the nation locked down as a result of pandemic. The Eagles gathered of their gymnasium a number of days later to chop down the nets, symbolic of a title run, and share hugs, tears and reminiscences from a magical season with a most unsatisfying conclusion.
After a number of weeks of eerie spring silence on the sports activities scene — no March Insanity, no early season baseball, no NHL playoffs, no NCAA Frozen 4 — it turned routine to learn tweets highlighting among the day’s massive performs from the Korean Baseball League. In Might, NASCAR rankings shot up as a result of it was the one main American sports activities league with stay occasions taking place. It was an ideal encapsulation of simply how a lot sports activities imply to our society. Having one thing to cheer, and a crew to interrupt your coronary heart, is a necessity for a lot of. Like myriad different issues, to lose all of that for a time had an influence on our lives.

Spuds and siblings
A couple of of these million tales are being advised on a residential road in south Moorhead, Minn., the place the Walthall household has been seeing an up-close model of how the pandemic impacts each aspect of sports activities within the Purple River Valley. Chad is the lads’s basketball head coach at Minnesota State, Moorhead. His daughter Brooke is a sophomore volleyball participant for the Dragons. Twin sons Blake and Brady are seniors at Moorhead Excessive Faculty and starred for the unbeaten Spuds soccer crew within the fall. The boys, and their mother and father, didn’t get an opportunity to go to Minneapolis and play for a state title within the Minnesota Vikings’ residence stadium.

“This crew could also be remembered greater than some other, as a result of they had been so terrific beneath such totally different circumstances,” Chad Walthall mentioned of the Spuds, admitting that the youngsters dealt with the adversity of a season performed throughout a pandemic significantly better than most mother and father. “Everybody goes via the identical issues, however for seniors and oldsters of seniors, it in all probability hurts somewhat bit extra.”
The quantity that has been misplaced is staggering. A whole lot of highschool occasions and tournaments had been cancelled. Professional baseball and soccer performed abbreviated seasons with out followers. The Vikings, Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Gophers performed in empty venues. When the coronavirus was declared a worldwide pandemic, the town of Minneapolis was one week away from internet hosting the NCAA Wrestling Championships, which that they had pursued since 2013 and had deliberate for a number of years. The 40,000 followers anticipated to fill U.S. Financial institution Stadium — three-quarters of them from outdoors the area — and the entire {dollars} they might spend within the metropolis, disappeared in a single day.
“That’s a day we’ll always remember. It was devastating for us,” mentioned Matt Meunier, director of Sports activities Minneapolis. “To get that shut and have the underside fall out, it was a tough day for certain.”
A 12 months that started off so nicely for sports activities within the area’s largest metropolis, with a profitable internet hosting of Hockey Day Minnesota and the announcement of the NHL’s Winter Traditional coming to Goal Area, ended with them shedding 30 sports activities occasions, together with the X Video games. Minneapolis is hoping to get the Winter Traditional again when the NHL resumes some type of conventional schedule, probably within the 2021-22 season.

Interstate inequality
With Minnesota initially placing virus-prevention measures in place that had been extra strict than these of the Dakotas, there was additionally a phenomenon of sports activities occasions leaping the Purple River, or the South Dakota border, and organising in less-restrictive environments.
“As soon as issues began to open again up in Might, North Dakota was somewhat bit extra fast-moving and on the Minnesota aspect they had been somewhat extra conservative with the tempo that they opened issues again up,” mentioned Kali Mork, director of sports activities for the Fargo-Moorhead CVB. “So on the North Dakota aspect … we did host a good variety of occasions, particularly in baseball. Some even noticed a bump within the variety of groups that wished to return to Fargo and play, as a result of they couldn’t play in Minnesota at the moment.”
This meant groups that had by no means earlier than performed in North Dakota had been visiting for the primary time, and 4 hockey tournaments usually performed within the Twin Cities had been relocated to Fargo. Mork mentioned that in all, the extra occasions meant round $500,000 in new direct customer spending in the neighborhood. However that excellent news was minor ray of sunshine in comparison with the losses felt on the town with NDSU soccer solely internet hosting one recreation, with few followers, within the 2020 season. Every “regular” Bison residence recreation brings round $500,000 into the group. With that gone, and the virus-related cancelation of different massive occasions just like the Fargo Marathon, Mork estimates that Fargo-Moorhead misplaced round $6 million in sports activities spending in 2020.

Recruiting restrictions
Among the many many NCAA restrictions put in place on this strangest of seasons was an extension of their “useless interval” when school coaches on the Division I and Division II ranges weren’t allowed to recruit. For coaches like Walthall, this implies uncertainty in regards to the future. However he obtained a break in that his sons had been enjoying summer time basketball, in order that meant attending to see gamers at tournaments that had been restricted to oldsters solely. In locations like Sioux Falls, there have been few different restrictions in place, a minimum of initially.
“I couldn’t watch a few of their tournaments in Minnesota as a result of no person was allowed in, not even mother and father. Once I’d go to the Pentagon, no person cared. You’d attempt to do some social distancing, however within the spring and summer time, lots of people weren’t even sporting masks,” Walthall recalled. “(Coaches) weren’t allowed to exit and watch and recruit gamers until you had your personal youngsters enjoying. That’s the one cause I obtained to go watch somewhat bit, and even then I wasn’t allowed to look at video games until my youngsters had been enjoying in them.”

The extent of restrictions at sporting occasions has modified because the pandemic has hit a lot more durable within the Dakotas, later within the 12 months. On the Sanford Pentagon, the foremost sports activities and occasion venue in Sioux Falls, there have been preliminary layoffs of round 200 employees for lack of sports activities there. Right now a few of these persons are again on the job and the video games go on, with tournaments like the school basketball Dakota Showcase taking place in an empty enviornment. However even to these few fortunate individuals who get to see sports activities in individual, one thing is lacking.
“I miss the followers, and I miss the power that comes with followers. I miss the joy of a crew happening a run, generally due to the momentum of the group,” mentioned Steve Younger, president of Sanford Sports activities. “When you’ll be able to hear each single play known as or each single adjustment made, you nearly really feel such as you’re in an unlawful atmosphere. It’s heartbreaking, however on the similar time I perceive it and I get it. I’ll be the primary one cheering loud in a full enviornment after we can.”
Relying on a comeback
The world on campus at MSU Moorhead is empty as nicely. The autumn volleyball season was canceled for Brooke Walthall’s crew. Chad Walthall’s Dragons are practising, prematurely of an abbreviated basketball season scheduled to start out in early January. They’ve already had COVID-19 run via their roster, and the hope is that with immunity and a vaccine in 2021, they’ll simply play, and the sports activities world can lastly return to some type of normalcy. That might be an excellent factor for the gamers, the followers, the mother and father, the coaches and the companies that depend on all of them.
“I can’t wait till subsequent 12 months, as a result of I believe persons are going to understand sports activities generally,” Chad Walthall mentioned. “It’s definitely an enormous a part of the material of our nation, and I believe everyone goes to embrace and recognize sports activities possibly greater than they ever have.”

These are unprecedented times around the World.
The coronavirus has impacted us all. Our everyday routines have been turned upside down with a virus that has spread around the World and forced so many changes to our day-to-day lives. Things like going to school and work, or going to the store or just hanging out at your local hangout are no longer commonplace. There’s now a “should I go” thought before moving forward.
Sports, pro wrestling and the sports entertainment community are not exempt during this pandemic. Most every major and collegiate sporting event has either been canceled, postponed or suspended for the time being. There’s no concrete date on when the NBA, NHL, MLS, and MLB will play their next games. The NCAA Tournament has been canceled as well as the rest of the XFL season.
So, what’s the fate next for the wrestling world? Well, first up was Smackdown Friday Night. Originally scheduled for Detroit, Michigan, it was moved to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando. Florida as the city of Detroit had barred large scale events for the time being. Fans, for the time being, are not being allowed to attend the Performance Center. Ironically, NXT broadcast live from the WWE Performance Center with fans this past Wednesday because of a scheduling conflict at Full Sail University. The WWE has already announced that Monday Night RAW will also be televised from the Performance Center instead of in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as originally scheduled.
Friday’s broadcast was indeed unique with Triple H joining Michael Cole on commentary giving a bit of levity after his open to the show welcoming the WWE Universe to the Performance Center. Triple H’s line about Asuka “blending in with the crowd” before attacking Alexa Bliss stands out. It harkens back to the time after the 9-11 attacks on America back in 2001 where SmackDown was the first live event in the country. The difference here is that there was a live audience. More on the show comes below in our SmackDown section.
WWE’s Live Events for this weekend in Toronto and Youngstown, Ohio were also canceled.
The WWE isn’t the only wrestling company affected by the outbreak. AEW’s Dynamite show this Wednesday in Rochester, New York has been moved to its home base in Jacksonville, Florida due to that city’s ban on events. It’s Blood & Guts show in Brooklyn, New York on March 25th will not take place due to the Prudential Center being shut down for a month.  Ring of Honor has canceled its 18th Anniversary Past & Present show for this weekend.
As of now, WrestleMania is still a go for the city of Tampa, Florida for April 5th but I’d be shocked it moves forward. Rumors of a move to June or July are out there. I can’t see any way that the city of Tampa nor the state of Florida allows such a large gathering to take place especially with so many fans flying into the city from around the Country and the World. It’s probably only a matter of time before the announcement of its postponement comes out.
It’s a very fluid situation as news changes not only day-by-day, but hour-by-hour and minute-by-minute. We are in the infancy of the virus here in the United States while other countries are ahead of us in its stages. The United States is still getting a handle on testing, so at this point, there’s no real figure on just how many have really been infected by the virus. Reports are that it could be up to 70-150 million that actually catch the virus.
All we can really do is be vigilant. Provide yourself a little social distancing. Do your best to avoid situations in which you may come in to contact with someone who may have the virus. Wash your hands. Cough and sneeze into your elbow. If you’re sick, stay home.
Be safe and stay well.
Now, with all that having been said, there’s a ton of wrestling news to get to.
The WWE and former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski are reportedly close to signing a deal that would see Gronk debut on SmackDown on March 20th, per Ryan Satin of WWE’s Backstage. Gronkowski reportedly could appear at WrestleMania, if it happens, and wrestle a few matches during the year.
Matt Hardy’s now a free agent! Rumors abound as to his next, non-independent gig. Will it be a return in a new form to WWE or NXT? Could it be as The Exalted One in AEW? Or possibly could Hardy come back to Impact Wrestling or Ring of Honor? The answer could come soon!
STAR OF THE WEEK
Shayna Baszler – How could it not be Baszler! Shayna eliminated all five of her fellow competitors in the Elimination Chamber Match to earn her WrestleMania showdown with RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch in what could be match of the night in Tampa, if it happens.

Women’s #1 Contender’s Elimination Chamber Match: Shayna Baszler defeated Asuka, Natalya, Liv Morgan, Sarah Logan and Ruby Riott
No real shockers here as the WWE ramps up to shore up the WrestleMania card. The biggest news comes in  the form of The Undertaker causing AJ Styles to lose again, setting up their match on the biggest stage. Match of the night sleeper – Daniel Bryan over Drew Gulak in a mat classic.

Anybody else find it odd that Edge was back so soon, so healthy? I was kind of disappointed. Beating up MVP and an RKO to Randy Orton doesn’t cut it for me. A red-hot angle took a meandering step this week and needs to ramp it back up this Monday to get back on track.

I still don’t get the appeal of Riddick Moss defending the 24/7 Championship in traditional form each week. So far, it’s been vanilla with a title that needs to stand out for its creativity and unpredictability.
Why does the WWE keep having their men’s tag team champions lose on TV right after getting the tittles? Seems like a pattern with The Miz & John Morrison and now The Street Profits.
NXT Champion Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair needs a personal connection and emotional investment to take it to the next level. Otherwise, it’s just another title match. Becky Lynch vs. Shayna Baszler has it. Ripley vs. Flair doesn’t. Although, very impressive thigh heel figure-four post leg-lock by Flair on Ripley on NXT Wednesday.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match: The BroserWeights (Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne) defeated The Undisputed ERA (Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly) to retain titles
I wasn’t expecting much this past Wednesday night with NXT coming from the Performance Center. It basically looked like a smaller Full Sail. Ironically enough, it became the forerunner to SmackDown there as the coronavirus has changed many plans this week.
A good, solid show with quality wrestling to advance the current storylines. Some questions…
Tick-tock apocalypse – is this Killer Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux?
Who kidnapped Raul Mendoza?
The BroserWeights are doing their best to be on par with The Undisputed Era and It’s become a fun feud, one I hope doesn’t end with TUE loss.
Looks like it’s more Damian Priest and Dominik Dijakovic for North American Champion Keith Lee, who seems to be in the mode of gathering wins these days against opponents he should beat.

The WWE is never afraid to stand out and be ahead of the curve when it comes to national events. As we mentioned, they were the first live gathering of people after the 9-11 attacks on America back in 2001 with a live edition of SmackDown. Now, 19 years later, they are the only “sport” on tv Friday night broadcasting live on FOX from the Performance Center without a crowd due to the coronavirus.

— Triple H (@TripleH) March 14, 2020
Kudos to Michael Cole and Triple H for bringing some fun and an escape for the WWE Universe for a few hours after a very trying week for most. Love the inside stuff and shots back and forth. Triple H to Sami Zayn – “You’ve (Zayn) turned irritating into an art form.” Classic!
Unfortunately, due to travel complications, Paige did not make her scheduled appearance, but Bayley and Sasha Banks made the most of it, mocking her before beating up on Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross, with help from Asuka. It looks like Cross & Bliss might be getting their Women’s Tag Team Title Match after all.

Loved the Roman Reigns interview with Cole. A nice shot at Bill Goldberg’s IQ by playing football at the University of Georgia and his “part-time” status by Reigns gives the feud a little backstory.
With the unusual circumstances, it was fitting that the WWE chose to show the Elimination Chamber Tag Team Match from this past Sunday’s PPV. Way to showcase a very good match for those who don’t have the WWE Network.

The best was saved for last though! John Cena and Bray Wyatt gave us a true reason to want to see them fight again. Stripped down to the basics, face-to-face and easy to understand. Cena thinks Wyatt isn’t the future. Wyatt says Cena broke him. The Fiend awaits next for John Cena. Let him in!

Beat the Streets Annual Benefit Returns to the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden May 28
Tumblr media
One of the highlights on the annual amateur wrestling calendar returns for the 11th straight year as Beat the Streets Wrestling (BTS), the largest grassroots inner city wrestling program in the United States, and USA Wrestling today announced that the annual BTS benefit will be held on Thursday, May 28. The thrilling night of wrestling, dubbed “Grapple at the Garden,” will again be held at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden after making a highly successful, sold-out debut there in 2019 following nearly a decade at various other iconic New York City venues.
The bouts will again be followed by the annual Benefit Celebration, which recognizes not only the elite athletes who compete at the event but also the BTS standout youth wrestlers who epitomize the work that the not-for-profit organization does year-round. Expected to compete are BTS wrestlers along with a national high school All-Star match-up, NCAA Champions and international Olympic men and women, and potentially mixed martial arts athletes who began as wrestlers.
Ticket information as well as the athletes, matchups, schedule and broadcast details will be announced at a later date.
“We couldn’t have been more pleased with the response to our first year at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden,” said Beat the Streets Executive Director Brendan Buckley. “The sold-out crowd brought a non-stop energy, fueled by world-class wrestling action from top to bottom. We expect it will be an even hotter ticket this year with the Tokyo Olympics on the horizon.”
“The Board of Beat the Streets is excited to present another outstanding competition as we raise funds for the youth of New York City,” added BTS Chairman of the Board Ray Barczak. “The support we receive from donors, fans and others during our annual benefit allows us to achieve our mission. With more than 3,000 male and female student-athletes participating in more than 150 programs across the region, Beat the Streets is in its 14th year of changing lives and providing opportunities that truly make a difference.”
Beat the Streets Benefit competitions began in 2010 and have since become a major showcase of the best of international wrestling. This unique and electrifying annual event has helped BTS raise millions of dollars to support local youth wrestling programs which empower young people in New York City. The 2019 event raised $1.3 million for the organization. Appearances by Olympic champions Jordan Burroughs (2012, gold), Kyle Snyder (2016, gold) and J’den Cox (2016, bronze) and local favorites like Nick Suriano (Rutgers University/Paramus, N.J.), James Green (Willingboro, N.J.) and Anthony Ashnault (Rutgers/So. Plainfield, N.J.) were among the night’s many crowd-pleasing highlights.
The first Beat the Streets Benefit was held on the U.S.S. Intrepid, an aircraft carrier docked on the west side of Manhattan. Since then, the benefit has taken place at other notable New York City spots like Grand Central Terminal and Times Square. Team USA has faced off against teams from around the world including Japan, Cuba, Russia, Iran and Canada, as well as international all-star teams. In 2018, the competition was hosted at the new Pier 17 in the Seaport District and included the highly anticipated Burroughs vs. Frank Chamizo (Italy) match.
New York City’s Madison Square Garden is one of the most famous sporting and entertainment venues in the world. The Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden is an impressive venue with the capacity to seat over 5,000. The theater has hosted notable wrestling events including the 1998 Goodwill Games wrestling competition and the 2017 Grapple at the Garden college wrestling event.

Reviving the XFL
With the proliferation of early-2000s aesthetics in net art, and the more general reterritorialization of the turn between the Nineties and the Noughties through fashion houses mimicking (or effectively upscale thrifting) the aesthetics of skate culture, Nü Metal, Halo, Screamo, Limewire, Metalcore, it was perhaps but a matter of time until the rumors of an XFL revival came into being. And over the past week we have seen just that, a series of discovered trademarks, denials that function as affirmations, innuendos that seem to indicate the return of the XFL on the horizon. There is a certain nostalgia for the XFL, born out of the same kind of libidinal pooling that one finds in the more general realization of wrestling as “Sports Entertainment” on a level equivalent to the metagame of Fantasy Football, the creation of a fiction developed out of the hyperreal, the two related to their supposed-origins in a remarkably similar fashion. That the initial excitement about the XFL has generated a great deal of attention, but a more careful look at the situation indicates that the league will hold little of what is fondly remembered from the XFL, and will instead replicate its worst failures.
This is not the first wave of trademarks related to the XFL to appear recently, as multiple XFL-related trademarks were reconstructed in simulacrum for ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary on the league. Looking back, the marketing of the XFL is hopelessly dated, specifically because of the NFL of the present day. A sort of naïvete surrounds any look back at the XFL, as the broken bones and separated shoulders healed over time, while the realization of the prevalence of CTE among former NFL players is presenting the immediate question of what the future of football can hold. This is a discussion which I will continue later, one central to my larger discussion of the XFL’s place in late capitalist identity: first I wish to discuss the structure of the nostalgic remove that is being employed to look back at the first half of the last decade.
The year 2000, in a way, has become a sort of year of innocence, a year that stands in relief of 9/11 as impossibly purified, as the year in which the initial structuring of a decade that would mimic the implosion of the Twin Towers would occur. The XFL ties into this, certainly, but more generally it is a singular point within a larger structure of postironic critique: the way that it begins creating the environment from which we received artists such as Gucci Mane, Lil Peep, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, the way that the Cocaine of the 80s and the Ecstasy of the 90s are soothed by the Xanax and Oxycodone of the years since is absolutely all contained within the development of drug scenes, music scenes, illegal gun clubs and ill-founded militias. The spectre of the terrorist and the school shooter, the ways in which identification with contradiction and offering “critical support” against American imperialism have been part of the most basic acts of navigating identity within these times all must be taken into account when discussing the field of music, sports, fashion, and schizoanalytic development within the virtual. Vince Carter’s “Le Dunk De La Mort” at the 2000 Summer Games is part of defining the space we find ourselves in now: in a single moment, an American known as “Air Canada” ended the NBA career of a Frenchman drafted to play in New York City. The Virtual has never been more fully realized, the augmentation of reality through the digital is so clumsy and yet so ubiquitous not because technology lags, but because it makes clear that the digital is already present within the Virtual without the augmentation. The way in which the digital structures the intensities of the Virtual means of exchange we find so vital to postmodern life is too uncomfortably clear in the augmentation of reality: its influence is too Real.
The perception of a certain sort of Real in spaces such as wrestling, the creation of “sports entertainment” and the gleeful acceptance of hyperreality by wrestlers and athletes alike is vitally tied to this. The greatest Face-Heel turn of the 21st Century was likely that of LeBron James, eventually undoing the terms on which he had originally departed in his return to Cleveland, the King being the defining star of the NBA in a way only Kobe and Jordan can rival. The schizophrenic final days of Brett Favre, playing a surprisingly substantial stint with the Minnesota Vikings before spiraling off into irrelevance with the Jets, only to eventually re-emerge as a Packers Legend, and nothing more. The defection of Ilya Kovalchuk to the KHL from the NHL, a complete reversal of the defections that so deeply defined the NHL only a decade and a half before. In the space of the Virtual, where an athlete must create a personae for themselves, must maintain the kayfabe of the sport, they often look to the sorts of acts found in aesthetic definition in wrestling for inspiration.
Conversely, wrestling has placed a great deal more emphasis on the way in which it can mimic the unpredictability, the storyline, the technicality of sport: it is performance, but performance upon the body, it is a specific means through which the body is traumatized toward the viewer in order to create an effect more genuine than the intentional, conspicuous trauma of UFC matches. In many ways, the WWE feels more “real” as it follows the expectations of the body as projection, the Oedipal dramas of the squared circle played out upon it rather than being realized in the direct confrontation that MMA requires. MMA itself is a sport realized in the hyperreal, as a sort of nondenominational violence which eventually ends in either brilliance or profound disappointment. The WWE relies on the same sort of thrill as a dunk contest, or even more appropriately a Home Run Derby: there is a specifically agreed-upon terms on which the characters-at-hand meet, and through that one is treated to a spectacle which is not meant to be competition, but to be more than it, which presents itself as more real than it.
Of course, this is not without its toll. Wrestling profoundly breaks the body, over time re-inflicting so many sorts of trauma that the window for many wrestlers to “get over” and make the WWE is incredibly short. Similarly, the NFL is based in replaceability, in the knowledge that a player is, no matter how good, merely one of 1,700 and that there are hundreds to thousands more willing to step in at any given time. This is true with any professional sports league, but the way in which the XFL is poised to revive that is itself rather worrying.
Vince McMahon’s original XFL was supposed to be a development of football as theatrical violence, the thrilling body-breaking of the WWE coming to the gridiron in an incredible release of the libidinal flows around the game, the sort of game where one could admit to “watching for the crashes” or reveling in trauma. That this comes in a year where his friend, President Donald Trump, has criticized the NFL for players protesting on the grounds of racial injustice and police brutality, is hardly surprising. However, that it has been echoed by Trump himself that there is a shift in the NFL, one away from the “proper” play of the game and toward supposedly-pointless penalties, the football of the future mentioned before, is important.
Questioning what football will look like in the future required John Bois to imagine a postcapitalist world of empty signification, of free-floating semiotics and nanobots that prevent accidental slapstick humor. In 17776, Bois touches on this, at the same time mentioning other things such as the uncertainty of a “catch” as contentious issues in the NFL. The ending to Steelers-Patriots on December 17th, 2017 where an NFL-supported ruling of an incomplete pass overturned what would have likely been a game-winning touchdown for the Steelers is perhaps the best example, in that the test of the “catch” has become an unanswerable one. The Virtual is overcoded by the digital, the incredible detail with which a catch can be determined has made it impossible to meaningfully observe, the standard of doubt, burden of proof, has been made infinitely interpretable. The ball still is in play, and always will remain in play. The NFL must ground itself at once in a sort of codification of formalist rules of interpretation, and the incredible potential for deconstructive reading presented by these rules. When Trump discussed the beauty of an unspecified tackle, and how it was ruined by the interference of a 15 yard penalty he felt undeserved, he opened up the space for McMahon to step in.
Given our current understanding of CTE, and more generally of trauma in football, the XFL would not bill itself as an amplification of violence, but rather as a return to the game as it “should be” absent the radical disparities that it can make clear. Instead, it would function as an apparatus to accept the racialized violence the positionality of the sport so readily structures, and in turn to draw a certain kind of appeal from that. In short, a fascist football league. The artfulness of the NFL is beyond compare, only the NBA can mirror the ways that the NFL shows the potential, the incredible artistic valance of the body. The vocabularies used to describe players like Odell Beckham Jr., Marshawn Lynch, Todd Gurley, even choreographers like Aaron Rodgers on the field or Sean McVay on the sidelines, the dramatic downfall of Johnny Manziel or the sudden brilliance of Carson Wentz; these men are described best in the language of avant-garde theatre and dance rather than conventional, prescriptivist concepts of sport as an empty, uninspired, singular sort of activity. McMahon’s league is unlikely to attract many NFL players, and while the even field-of-play could allow for the occasional spectacular play, the quality will be similar to NCAA football with lower stakes and a lesser entry fee.
Thus, we reach a point where we realize, just as Linkin Park cannot release another Meteroia, just as the PS2 will never enjoy the feeling of a new release in the way it once did, the shadow of two no-towers will forever loom over us, the revival of the XFL will rely on fascism to assert itself rather than a meaningful realization of what made the notion so exciting. It will be bad football, and one can only hope a handful of those playing it will eventually move to the NFL.

The UFC Released Its Archives, and All the Best Videos Are Now on YouTube

Jun 4 2019, 10:58pm The UFC Released Its Archives, and All the Best Videos Are Now on YouTube The mixed martial arts pioneer digs deep for the first time, allowing for an unprecedented look into the sport’s past TWEET In the days preceding Memorial Day weekend, the Ultimate Fighting Championship began to trickle out old videos on its YouTube channel It’s not uncommon for the UFC to release years-old fights that tie into a given weekend’s events to drum up excitement, but these were unique This batch reaches back decades and has basically no newsworthiness at all; instead, it provides a blemishes-and-all look at the start of the organization that's nearly synonymous with mixed martial arts Dispensing with all the customary hype and posturing, it's a crash course in the product: the fights themselves The UFC says it's dropping these videos to supplement UFC 25 Years in Short, its 2018 release of 25 short-length documentaries “In addition to UFC 25 Years in Short , we are releasing relevant content on YouTube, including previous fights that were exclusive to UFC Fight Pass,” UFC Senior VP Chris Kartzmark, of Production & Programming, told VICE “These additional videos add context for fans hearing these stories for the first time” Context is helpful but ultimately unnecessary; even without the accompanying shorts, the fights are a time capsule to the sport’s early days, and hopping from the 90s to the 00s to the present provide fascinating visual proof of how both the sport and the athletes themselves have changed If you’re new to the sport, consider these five vintage fights a primer.. While lacking the veneer and production value of the modern day, these snapshots show a sport in flux, heading toward a brighter future They are the blocks upon which the UFC was built, even as they’re worthy of their own extended footnote UFC 1: The Beginning (UFC 1, 1993) On November 12, 1993, in Denver, Colorado, the UFC held its inaugural event, and kind of like the first few pancakes always are, at times it was a little lumpy The concept of tapping out was new, and sometimes referees missed it The eight participants used no protective handgear (it would be another four years until the practice was mandated) Finer rules, which would prohibit stomping opponents in the head, groin shots, and hair pulling, were still years away It felt like a free-for-all and only loosely regulated, but even then, its concept of pitting style against style was captivating Royce Gracie, its eventual winner, showed that elegance could easily best brute strength, and his Brazilian jiu-jitsu (itself a modern adaptation of a heritage Japanese martial art) submitted fighters with greater striking power, bigger muscles, and more traditional backgrounds of boxing, wrestling, and classic martial arts Gracie would be one of the first elected to the UFC’s Hall of Fame in 2003 , while his BJJ, as it’s abbreviated today, continues to dominate the sport and is a pillar of modern mixed martial arts Royce Gracie vs Ken Shamrock (UFC 5, 1995) Gracie proved with his UFC 1 title and subsequent wins in 2 and 4 (both in 1994) that even the biggest and strongest fighters were vulnerable when brought to the ground His competitors—and the world—were racing to catch up, none more than Ken Shamrock, a U.S fighting journeyman who had previously participated in early mixed martial arts matches in Japan and fought Gracie twice before, once ending in Shamrock's submission and once his withdrawal Billed the “Superfight,” the pair’s stand-alone match headlined UFC 5 The match was tactically interesting but visually boring; after a 30-minute stalemate on the ground, event organizers scrambled to create new rules, adding a five-minute overtime period In the end, judges concluded the match a draw; in actuality it represented a victory for Shamrock Initially surprised by Gracie’s ground fighting, Shamrock—and the world—was learning, and the result demonstrated that the playing field was being leveled with each successive year Vitor Belfort vs Scott Ferrozzo (and Joe Rogan with hair) (UFC 12, 1997) Dothan, Alabama, is an unlikely place for many things, including the UFC, but also Joe Rogan Rogan, who now gets high with Elon Musk , was two years into the NBC sitcom NewsRadio and had a full head of hair when he first debuted his color commentary and athlete interviews Beyond this, however, the event also saw the debut of Vitor Belfort, who could arguably be viewed as the prototypical athlete of modern MMA Built like a brick house but with lightning-fast movement, the 19-year-old's dominance over his opponents and win of the heavyweight tournament effectively ended the early era of Toughman-style softbody brawlers and lithe grappling specialists The first truly well-rounded fighter would go on to win the future light heavyweight title Matt Hughes vs Carlos Newton (UFC 34, 2001) After years of small markets and smaller profits, the UFC was on the verge of folding when brothers Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and partner Dana White purchased the whole shebang for $2 million in 2001 They restructured, reorganized, and began to nurture future stars like Matt Hughes The Illinoisan had the pedigree—a NCAA All-American wrestler who parlayed his on-mat skills to the octagon—but he still entered the ring with welterweight champ Carlos Newton as the underdog Caught in a submission, Hughes lifted Newton over his head, slamming them both to the canvas and knocking Newton unconscious It was a slam heard ‘round the world, making Hughes into an overnight legend He would also forge a new path that other high school and collegiate wrestlers, long stymied by the archaic Olympics system, would follow Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz (UFC 47, 2004) While Hughes and others would establish cult followings, it was Chuck Liddell who would take the organization to the next level in terms of superstar influence Liddell’s upset of then-champ Tito Ortiz in Las Vegas launched the Californian as the first MMA crossover star He would appear the cover of ESPN The Magazine , and his notoriety is such that his IMDB, which includes appearances on Entourage and The Simpsons , often credits him as portraying himself Future stars like Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey arguably eclipsed his level of recognition, but Liddell was the first UFC superstar Read the full article
