Navratri: Day One - Shailaputri [Obey Me]
Mt. Kailash, Himalayan Mountains.
The snow capped mountain tops were beautiful, and the air was crisp and fresh.
"Your family lives here?" Satan asked, looking around for any sign of danger. It was too peaceful for comfort.
"I was born here, my friend," Esshra chuckled. "But yes, I live here..."
Two giant snakes came up and curled themselves around her ankles, eyeing the seven avatars with suspicion.
"Shesha Naaga. Vasuki Naaga. Calm down....They're friends who have come for Ma Durga's birthday. Easy now...."
Both snakes went back to Vishnu and Shiva, wrapped around their bodies.
*************************************************
"So, since I hadn't explained Navratri completely, I will do it now..." she smiled.
Surprisingly, literally everyone had showed up for the prayers.
Lucifer could feel his sin exuding out of this tiny goddess yet.... her pride wasn't for herself. It was for her mother.
"This marks the end of a war between Ma Durga and the evil villain, Mahishasura."
"Wooaaahhh" Levi was literally bouncing on his heels, while everyone listened attentively.
"Did this person have any other relatives?" Luke piped up. "And have you seen this person?"
"No to both questions, kiddo," she ruffled his hair. "Also. You boys better listen carefully because I will quiz everyone after the morning of the tenth day."
"What's the prize, babe?" Mammon's laid back, teasing tone reached everyone's ears.
"Mammon. We're not dating so please drop that name, and the prize is....a surprise," she stuck her tongue out at him.
"So. Today is the first day of Navratri, and ma's first form is called Shailaputri, meaning "Daughter of the Mountains".
She is an incarnation of Ma Parvati, and is seen sitting on a bull....Satan stop picking on Belphie....yes I know what you're trying to do......named Nandi, and she has a trishula in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand.
Shailaputri is considered to be the direct incarnation of Mahakali (as in, my biological mother's angry form but don't tell them I told you guys that)....."
Solomon and Simeon were quite intrigued by her family history, but listened attentively.
Asmodeus sighed, "What's the color scheme of the day?"
"Yellow, depicting action and vigor," she chuckled, noticing how Asmo raised an eyebrow at the mentioned color. "Asmo. Why do I get the feeling you're going to pull out something?"
*************************************************
Damion chuckled, finding her cute. He sat beside Shiva, "I wish I had a daughter....but fate had other plans."
"Well...technically you did have her for a short time...but yes, fate had other plans, Lord Damion," Shiva nodded.
"Lady Durga...I'd like to see her, if it's all right with you," Damion looked at Shiva, "of course, only if she's available. Otherwise I'll just wait until the celebration is over."
Durga came out, dressed in a yellow sari, and she looked beautiful. She sat next to Shiva, trishula in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand.
Parvati and Kali were behind her, smiling at her.
*************************************************
Deus was genuinely surprised and shocked to see how easily everyone got along.
Diavolo kept his distance yet....seeing her smile made him sweat....in a good way but....
He'd remembered when she covered her face during their short-lived marriage. And now.... he understood why she was dressed as such.
*************************************************
Asmo was already fussing about the color and outfits everyone will need.... Oy Vey.
"So. Asmo, pay attention please....Mum Durga is also considered to be the reincarnation of Sati. Shiva, as in my dad's first wife, who then reincarnated herself as Mum Parvati, and is known as Hemavati."
"....." they were all confused save for Damion and Deus, who had smirks on their faces.
"Well, one thing is certain. The boys are confused," Deus chuckled.
"True....looks like Diavolo is beyond confused..." Damion looked over at the young prince who was trying to make sense of the whole story.
*************************************************
Diavolo stood up to go ask Esshra about how reincarnation works, but the goddess was called away by a few ladies in the kitchen.
A few minutes later, he accidentally came to the kitchen, and was nearly smacked upside the head by a little granny who was muttering something about modern men "trying to cook despite the fact that they tend to set the frying pan on fire."
"Diavolo. Did you need something?" It was Lakshmi, Esshra's aunt.
"Yeah....I was trying to find Esshra...."
"She's not here," Vasundhara sighed. "Just so you know, she's busy with the celebration at the moment. Besides.... you're too late if you think you can just waltz right back into her life, you're dead wrong."
Diavolo nodded, "Understandable. But can anyone explain to me how this reincarnation works?"
*************************************************
Meanwhile, Kartik showed up, shirt undone as he'd just taken a cold shower.
Levi was wandering around the interiors when he accidentally ran face first into a solid, hard, muscular chest.
Yelping, he jumped back, apologizing profusely while blushing several thousands shades of red.
"Grand Admiral Leviathan. Stop this...whatever you're doing...." the Commander of Gods raised an eyebrow, fixing the towel around his hips.
Levi collapsed, unable to face his military idol.
*************************************************
Esshra poked Satan’s forehead, seeing as he was trying to cuddle Durga's tiger.... who decided Satan was food and literally tried to eat his face off....
"Hey.....Pfft-" she burst out laughing, "I'd better send this to Levi...."
Shiva raised an eyebrow, "First time I've heard her laugh...."
"Well, she's adjusted quite well with those seven, and she's literally always like this with them," Damion chuckled..
"Ah yes....my former six chaotic kids..." Deus sighed, "At least they're making her happy."
Parvati smiled, bringing out some refreshments. "That's a good thing, isn't it?"
Kali sighed, calling the tiger away. Leaving the blonde covered in drool.
*************************************************
Meanwhile, Kartik poked Levi's rib cage. "Oi. Grand Admiral Leviathan....you alive?"
Poor weeb had a nose bleed, as his soul left his body.
"....This one is weird..." the older male sighed, easily throwing Levi over his shoulder like s sack of potatoes.
Levi's phone went off several times...and he missed his chance to see Satan's face being almost eaten off....
*************************************************
Vasundhara was glaring at Diavolo the whole time Lakshmi was explaining the history of Durga.
As soon as the explanation was done, Vasundhara rolled her eyes, "He's her ex...I'm surprised she invited him to mum's birthday..."
Lakshmi smiled, "Well, dear, you should know by now she does things through here," she tapped her forehead. "After all, she is the goddess of logical thinking....apart from others..."
"Point taken," the younger woman shrugged. "Thought she hated you, Dia?"
"I....don't know if she does..." he sighed. "But I had my reasons for doing what I did...I mean...she was technically still a child..."
"Ever heard of something called communication, young prince?" She raised an eyebrow, "She's not stupid. Besides...your chaotic seven friends seem to take better care of her....as always..."
*************************************************
Evening of Day One:
Everyone was dressed in shades of yellow, outfits literally hand picked and designed by Asmo.
"....Where's Esshra?" Shiva sighed, "She's probably run off to that place again, as usual..."
Lucifer raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Mammon though, was another thing.
"Where'd she go? What place do you mean? I swear if anything happens to her....iyfkgolydiktfo" and a jalebi was shoved into his mouth courtesy of Belphie.
"Too noisy, Mammon. Too noisy."
Beelzebub was on his umpteenth glass of lassi, loving how the milky drink tasted.
*************************************************
Esshra was in her room, staring at the skies as dusk turned to night, hues of red and orange now turning to a beautiful midnight purple shade.
She'd often wondered what her family was put through after her divorce, despite the fact it wasn't even a messy one.
Parvati quietly came up and stood behind her, "Hey now. We're doing well...." she hugged the young woman, who was almost in tears. "You know...I'm glad you have friends who take care of you...."
"Those seven....plus Barbatos....they've always taken care of me, mum. They're good guys...."
"Hm? Is that..... 8 potential partners I see for you?" She teased.
"Nah. Just good friends....I don't think all this romantic crap is meant for me...." she sighed.
"Oh come on love. The kid with purple hair likes Kartik."
"Took you a while to figure out that," Esshra chuckled. "Levi has had the biggest crush on him for eternity!!"
*************************************************
Kali had noticed how often the brothers eyes were constantly searching for her daughter.
She could tell they were concerned about her safety yet.....the silverette seemed to be the most protective of her.
He was literally acting like her shadow, always either behind her or next to her.
His antics used to make her laugh, followed by a quip or a teasing sentence which caused him to turn several shades of red.
*************************************************
And so, the first day of Durga's birthday ended with fireworks in the night skies....
And left a certain someone pondering about her life.

Dussehra date | Dussehra 2019 | Dussehra images
Dussehra, is one of the most important festivals celebrated in various forms, across India, Nepal andBang- ladesh. Dasara/ Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit Dasha-hara meaning "remover of bad fate" meaning remover of ten heads of Ravana's.
It is also referred to as Navratri and Durgotsav. It is also written as Dashahara, Dussehra, Punjabi: ????? and Dashain in Nepal.
Vijayadashmi or dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the Hindu autumn lunar month of Ashvin, or Ashwayuja which falls in September or October of the Western calendar, from the Shukla Paksha Pratipada, or the day after the new moon which falls in Bhadrapada, to the Dashami, or the tenth day of Ashvin. The first nine days are celebrated as Maha Navratri(Sanskrit: ????????, 'nine nights') or Sharada Navratri (the most important Navratri) and culminates on the tenth day as dussehra. This day also celebrates the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana.Dussehra are the best time for Indian to perform all shubh activities, so if you plan your child marriage or want to get register for marriage or for any shubh mahurat then Dussehra is the best time. Dussehra is very good for marriages or want to get register for marriage, so apnahumsafar.com is best matrimony and matrimonial website in India. apnahumsafar.com wish you all happy Dussehra....
In India, the harvest season begins at this time and so the Mother Goddess is invoked to start the new harvest season and reactivate the vigor and fertility of the soil. This is done through religious performances and rituals which are thought to invoke cosmic forces that rejuvenate the soil. Many people of the Hindu faith observe dussehra through social gatherings and food offerings to the gods at home and in temples throughout Nepal and India.
                                                  History
dussehra is the festival of Victory of Good over Evil. There are many variations to this feat, that are believed all across India.Victory of God Rama over Ravana

Effigy of Ravana burns
On this day in the Treta Yug, Rama, also called Shri Ram, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, killed the great demon Ravana who had abducted Rama's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. Rama, his brother Lakshmana, their follower Hanuman and an army of monkeys fought a great battle to rescue Sita. The entire narrative is recorded in the epic Ramayana, a Hindu scripture.
Rama had performed "Chandi Homa" and invoked the blessings of Durga, who blessed Rama with secret knowledge of the way to kill Ravana. On the day of Ashvin Shukla Dashami, Rama's party found Sita and defeated Ravana. Thus it is termed as VijayaDashami. Based on the inferences from Valmiki’s Ramayana, Kalidas’s Raghuvans, Tulsidas’s Ram Charit Manas, and Keshavdas's Ram Chandra Yas Chandrika as well as common perception in India, Rama, Sita, and of Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya on the 30th day of Ashvin (19–20 days after Vijayadashmi). To mark the return of Lord Rama, in the evening, the residents of Ayodhya lit their city with millions of earthen lamps (called Deepak). Since then, this day is celebrated in India as Deepawali or Diwali.
Many people perform "Aditya Homa" as a "Shanti Yagna" and recite Sundara Kanda of Srimad Ramayana for 5 days. These Yagna performances are thought to create powerful agents in the atmosphere surrounding the house that will keep the household environment clean and healthy. These rituals are intended to rid the household of the ten bad qualities, which are represented by 10 heads of Ravana as follows:
   Kama vasana (Lust)
   Krodha (Anger)
   Moha (Delusion)
   Lobha (Greed)
   Mada (Over Pride)
   Matsara (Jealousy)
   Manas (Mind)
   Buddhi (Intellect)
   Chitta (Will)
   Ahankara (Ego).
Dussehra in different parts of India
Northern India
In Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, it is traditional to plant barley seeds in earthen pots on the first day of Navratri. On the day of dussehra, the nine-day old sprouts (called noratras or nortas or of nav ratris or nine nights) are used as symbols of luck. Men place them in their caps or behind their ears.
In most of northern India and some parts of Maharashtra, Dasha-Hara is celebrated more in honour of Rama. During these 10 days many plays and dramas based on Ramayana are performed. These are called Ramlila. There are outdoor fairs and large parades with effigies of Ravana (a mythical king of ancient Sri Lanka), his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghanad. The effigies are burnt on bonfires in the evening. After Dussehra, the hot summer ends, especially in North India. The onset of cold weather is believed to encourage infections. The burning of the effigies, filled with firecrackers containing phosphorus, supposedly purifies the atmosphere, while the temples perform Chandi Homa or Durga Homa, with the same intent.
In the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, the dussehra festival starts with the performance of Ramlila which is unique as it is based on the musical rendering of the katha or story of Lord Rama. It is based on the theatrical traditions set by Uday Shankar during his stay in Almora; these traditions were further enriched by Mohan Upreti and Brijendra Lal Sah. Known as the Almora or Kumaon style, Ramlila has been recognised by UNESCO in its 2008 report as one of the representative styles of Ramlila in India.
Himachal Pradesh
Main article: Kullu Dussehra
Kullu Dussehra is celebrated in Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is celebrated in the Dhalpur maidan in the Kullu valley. Dussehra at Kullu commences on the tenth day of the rising moon, i.e. on 'VijayaDashami' day itself and continues for seven days. Its history dates back to the 17th century when local King Jagat Singh installed an idol of Raghunath on his throne as a mark of penance. After this, god Raghunath was declared as the ruling deity of the Valley.
Southern India
Vijayadashami is celebrated in various ways in different parts of South India. Celebrations can take many forms, ranging from worshipping the goddess Chamundeshwari (Durga) to exhibiting colorful toys-, celebrated as Golu in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu from Navratri onwards. Navaratri Golu, dolls and figurine display festival for girls and women in South India
There is a legend related to the exhibition of toys that is known as "Bombe habba" in Karnataka, "Bommala Koluvu" in Andhra Pradesh and Golu or Kolu in Tamil Nadu. Since the goddess Durga needed tremendous power, all other gods and goddesses transferred their power to her and they all stood still as statues. To respect the self-sacrifice of these deities during the festival days, Hindus revere morities, which are small statues in the shape of particular gods and goddesses. Golu ends on dussehra.
Vijayadashami is also the auspicious day for starting their formal education. Students keep their books and workers their tools for puja on the ninth day of Navratri (Ayudha Puja, Saraswathi Puja); these are taken back and used after puja on the tenth day (Vijayadasami). The practice is so old that in many parts of south India, even non-Hindus follow this tradition. In 2004, many churches in Kerala formally adopted the same tradition of introducing young children to education on Dasara day.
Andhra Pradesh
Vijayadashami has great importance in the Telugu household. For life events such as starting a new business/ venture, or buying a new home or vehicle, rituals take place on this auspicious day. They perform Ayudha Puja where they sanctify vehicles and other new items. In the evenings, a procession is taken up in all major cities where people dress up as characters from the Ramayana and perform stage shows called Ramlila. Huge effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and- Indrajit or Meghanada are burned, signifying victory of Lord Rama.
In the Telangana region, younger family members usually pay respects to their elders by giving them leaves of Shami tree/ Jammi tree, and seeking their blessings.
This festival is celebrated in all temples of Durga. Shodasa Upacharam is offered to her. During Navratri ("nine nights"), Goddess Durga is decorated in her different aspects like Bala Tripura Sundari, Mahishasura Mardhini, Annapoorna, Kali, Raja Rajeshwari, Kanaka Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Gayatri Devi. On the river banks of Krishna at Vijayawada, in an age-old temple of "Sri Durga Malleswar Swami" and on a hill called "Indra-Kila-Adri", Dasara & Navratri are celebrated every year with great pomp & show and tens of thousands of people visit this temple during this time. These celebrations are concluded on the tenth day of "Vijaya Dashami", which is usually a national holiday. In Vijayawada on Vijayadashami day, Teppa Utsavam is celebrated, in which Durga's image is placed on a big boat decorated with flowers and lights, is celebrated in the evening.celebrate this festival a lot of people in Telangana region girls play bathukamma and happyness shown
Karnataka
In Karnat- aka, Ayudha Puja, on the ninth day of dussehra, is celebrated with the worship of implements used in daily life such as computers, books, vehicles, or kitchen tools. Buses, trucks and machines in factories are decorated. The effort to see the divine in the tools and objects one uses in daily life is central to this celebration, so it includes all tools that help one earn one's livelihood. Knowledge workers go for books, pen or computers, farmers the plough and other agricultural tools, machinery for industrialists and cars/buses/trucks for the transportation workers—all are decorated with flowers and worshiped on this day invoking God's blessing for success in coming years.
It is believed that any new venture such as starting of business or purchasing of new household items on this day is bound to succeed.
Shastra puja, or the worship of the weapon Shastra/Astra used by Goddess Durga, are worshiped on this day, in some areas.
Mysore dussehra
Main article: Mysore dussehra
Mysore Palace in all its majesty during dussehra
The legend associated with the Shami tree finds commemoration during the renowned Mysore dussehra & Navratri celebrations at Mysore. The Mysore celebrations also strongly emphasize the Durga legend described above, as may be expected in the city built at the very site of the events of the Durga legend. On Vijaydashami day, at the culmination of a colourful 10-day celebration, the goddess Chamundeshwari is worshiped and then borne in a grand procession on a Golden Ambari or elephant-mounted throne through the city of Mysore, from the historical Mysore Palace to the Banni Mantapa. Banni is the Kannada word for the Sanskrit Shami, and Mantapa means "Pavilion".
Madikeri dussehra
Main article: Madikeri dussehra
In Madikeri, dussehra is celebrated in a different style. Madikeri dussehra has a history of over 100 years. dussehra begins with Kargas from four Mariamma Temples. There is a procession of 10 Mantapas from 10 Temples on the night of Vijayadashami.
At midnight, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and- Indrajit or Meghanada are stuffed with firecrackers and set alight. Children especially enjoy seeing this because of the beautiful fireworks. The festival, which is thought of as the "Victory of Good over Evil" and "Return of Rama from
Exile" is celebrated in grand style. Because the day is auspicious, people inaugurate new vehicles, machines, books, weapons and tools by ceremonially asking god to bless the new items.
Kerala
The last three days of the Navratri festival, i.e. Ashtami, Navami, and Dashami are celebrated as Saraswati Puja. The celebrations start with the Puja Veypu (Offering for Worship). It consists of placing the books for Pooja on the Ashtami day. It may be in one’s own house, in the local
Nursery School run by traditional teachers, or in the local temple. The books will be taken out for reading, after worship, only on the morning of the third day (VijayaDashami). It is called Puja Eduppu (Taking back after Puja). Children are happy since they are not expected to study on
these days. On the Vijayadashami day, Kerala celebrates Vidyarambham also- known as Ezhuthiniruthu or Initia- tion of Writing where children between two and three years old are formally initiated before they are admitted to nursery schools. The child is made to write for the first time
on the rice spread in a plate with the index finger, guided by an elder of the family or by a reputed teacher. The little ones will have to write “Hari Shri Ganapataye Namah” and recite the same to mark the auspicious entry in to the world of education. This is considered a memorable event in the life of a person. Ayudha Puja is also conducted during this period.
Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, the festival incorporates worship of the goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati- , and Shakti. In Kulasekarapatnam located 20 km from Tiruchendur (Thoothukudi Dist), dussehra festival is celebrated very uniquely. The Mutharamman temple is extraordinary, as it has God Shiva
and Goddess Shakthi in the same shrine. Any prayers offered in the temple are granted, as Shiva and Shakthi reside in the temple happily together. More than 1,500,000 devotees gather together and celebrate Navratri in this village. This coastal village used to be a port in its earlier days.
People fast on all 9 days and tie a holy thread on fist. People dress up as a different God each day and collect money. The money is offered to the temple on the end of the ninth day. Children love the different casting of people during this season. This festival marks a colorful season in this area.
Western India Maharashtra
In Maharashtra, the festival is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Ashvin (which falls in October) according to the Shaka Hindu Calendar. These three and a half days in the Hindu Lunar calendar are considered very auspicious. On dussehra day, the deities installed on the first day of the Navratri are immersed in water. This day also marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. People visit each other and exchange sweets. People worship the Aapta tree (Bauhinia variegata) and exchange its leaves (known as golden leaves) as a symbol of gold and wish each other a bright & prosperous future. The tradition of exchanging aapta leaves is synonymous to Raghuraja, an ancestor of Ramachandra and Kubera. Similar to Ayudha Puja in Karnataka, many groups and communities, largely the artisan castes, celebrateKhande navami, the day before dussehra; tools of all kinds are given rest and ritually worshiped. In Maharashtra, people also ritually cross the border of their community, in a ceremony known as Simollanghan, which has its roots in the idea that this day is an auspicious one on which to start ventures. In ancient times kings used the feast of dussehra to cross the frontier and fight against their neighboring kingdoms. Thus dussehra also marks the beginning of the war season.
Eastern India Orissa
VijayaDashami or Dussehra is celebrated as Durga Puja in two different ways in Orissa. In Shakti Peethas or temples of the goddesses, the Durga Puja is observed with rituals for a period of 10 to 16 days, known as Shodasa Upachara. The goddess Durga is also worshipped by devotees in different pendals throughout the state. The pendals are beautifully decorated. The last day of the Sharodiya Durga Puja is known as Vijayadashami. After the last ritual Aparajita Puja is performed to the goddess, a tearful farewell is offered to her. The women offer Dahi-Pakhal (cooked rice soaked in water, with curd), Pitha (baked cakes), Mitha (sweets) and fried fish to the Goddess. Most of the
community pujas postpone the farewell as long as possible and arrange a grand send-off. The images are carried in processions known as Bhasani Jatra or Bisarjan Jatra around the locale and finally are immersed in a nearby river or lake. After the immersion of the deity, people across the state celebrate Ravan Podi, in which they burn an effigy of the demon Ravan.

Self-styled vigilante groups of our country leave no opportunity to shock people with their outrageous dictates. With the advent of Navaratri, the Hindu cause espousing groups have begun threatening meat shop owners and non-veg eateries in Noida and Greater Noida to close down or face dire consequences.
A little known group,  Gau Raksha Hindu Dal, has demanded the closure of meat shops from March 18 to March 25. The members of this group have issued instructions to all dhabas and shops in Greater Noida West to remove chicken and mutton dishes from the menus.
“We are demanding the district administration to issue an order to the slaughterhouses to remain closed during Navratri. We have also sent a letter regarding this,"  said Ved Nagar, a member of the group.
BN Singh, the district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar, rubbishes this claim and assures the residents of GB Nagar that they need not fear these fringe elements as the authorities will deal with them very sternly. “We did not receive any such letter as claimed by the group.  And no meat shops will close. If anyone tries to forcefully shut them down, they will be liable for very strict action."
A senior police officer of GB Nagar reiterated Singh's stance. "Such kind of acts will not be tolerated. If anyone takes the law into their own hands, strict action will be initiated against them," he said and added, " Last year, Nagar was arrested and sent to judicial custody after he had forced the closure of meat shops in the Badalpur area of Greater Noida. He should not be inviting the same fate this year."
Allegedly on Friday, atleast 12 teams of the Gau Raksha Hindu Dal descended on the meat shops and eateries in different areas of Greater Noida and threatened them to shut shop during the festival week.

Dussehra at Kullu commences on the tenth day of the rising moon, i.e. on ‘Vijay Dashmi‘ day itself and continues for seven days. Its history dates back to the 17th century when local King Jagat Singh installed an idol of Raghunath on his throne as a mark of penance. After this, god Raghunath was declared as the ruling deity of the Valley. The State government has accorded the status of International festival to the Kullu Dussehra, which attracts tourists in large numbers

HistoryEdit
According to legend, after his return from a pilgrimage to Maharishi Jamdagni went to his hermitage at Malana. On his head he carried a basket filled with eighteen images of different gods. Crossing through Chanderkhani pass, he came upon a fierce storm. Struggling to stay on his feet, Maharishi Jamdagni’s basket was thrown from his head, scattering the images to many distant places. Hill people, finding these images saw them take shape or form as Gods, and began to worship them. Legend has it that deity worship began in the Kullu Valley.
In the 16th Century, Raja Jagat Singh ruled over the prosperous and beautiful kingdom of Kullu. As the ruler, the Raja came to know of a peasant by the name of Durgadatta who apparently possessed many beautiful pearls. The Raja thought he should have these treasured pearls, even though the only pearls Durgadatta had were pearls of Knowledge. But the Raja in his greed ordered Durgadatta to hand over his pearls or be hanged. Knowing of his inevitable fate at the hands of the king, Durgadatta threw himself on the fire and cursed the king, “Whenever you eat, your rice will appear as worms, and water will appear as blood”. Doomed by his fate, the Raja sought solace and searched out advice from a Brahmin. The Holy man told him that in order to eradicate the curse, he must retrieve the deity of Ragunath from Raam’skingdom. Desperate, the king sent a Brahmin to Ayodya. One fine day the Brahmin stole the deity and set out on his journey back to Kullu. The people of Ayodya, finding their beloved Ragunath missing, set out in search of the Kullu Brahmin. On the banks of the Saryu river, they approached the Brahmin and asked him why he had taken Ragunath ji. The Brahmin recounted the story of the Kullu king. The people of Ayodya attempted to lift Ragunath, but their deity became incredibly heavy when headed back towards Ayodya, and became very light when headed to Kullu. On reaching Kullu Ragunath was installed as the reigning deity of the Kullu kingdom. After installing the deity of Ragunath, Raja Jagat Singh drank the Charan-Amrit of the deity and the curse was lifted. Jagat Singh became Lord Ragunath’s regent. This legend is connected with the Dussehra at Kullu. This deity is taken in a Ratha to the Dussehra.

Dussehra 2017: 5 Places That Celebrate The Victory of Good Over Evil Differently
The legends may vary but the message behind the Vijayadashmi celebration remains the ‘victory of good over evil.’
Dussehra or Vijayadashmi falls on the tenth day of Navratri. The sky-high effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnada are set of fire to celebrate Lord Rama’s victory over asura king Ravana on this day. Vijayadashmi also commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasur. The legends may vary but the message behind the Vijayadashmi celebration remains the ‘victory of good over evil.’
Let us take you through 5 places in India that celebrate this day with great fervor in the most diverse ways:
1. Mysore
For over 400 years, the Mysore Dasara has been celebrated with great pomp and show. Mysuru got its name from Mahishasura – the demon killed by Goddess Chamundeshwari on the tenth day of the Navratri Festival – Vijayadashmi.
The key attractions of Mysore Dasara are the marvelously lit Mysore Palace, elephant ride, military parades and various cultural shows. 2. West BengalThe people of West Bengal, celebrate the victory of Maa Durga over Mahishasura with Durga puja. The day is marked by processions where Durga idols are carried to river or ocean and the devotees bid farewell to the Goddess. During Durga Puja elaborate pandals are constructed where people offer prayers, enjoy scrumptious bhojs and perform a special dance known as dhunuchi.3. KulluKullu Dussehra is yet another most-sought after Dussehra celebration in India. However, instead of burning the effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnada, the locals perform Lanka-Dahan by burning a consortium of dry leaves and twigs. In rest of the country, Dussehra marks the end of celebration of Navratri, but in Kullu the festivities begin with Dussehra. The main attractions of Kullu Dussehra are the dances performed on the beats of dhadaks and notes of Narsingha trumpets.4. ChennaiThe states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh celebrate the festival with Bommai Kolus – wherein colorful dolls are displayed along with idols of Goddess Laxmi, Saraswati and Parvati. Kalasa Ahvanam marks the first day and Vijyadashmi concludes the festival. 5. VaranasiThe Ram Lila at Varanasi is rejoiced by thousands of viewers every year. Special sets of Ayodhya, Lanka and Ashok Vatika are constructed for Ram Lila and the characters enact Ramayana in the most unique way.

Death toll in Mumbai's Elphinstone foot overbridge stampede rises to 23
Tumblr media
Hiloni, 22
Her aunt Bharati Arya, who was also at the hospital, said Hiloni's mother had kept a fast in Navratri for her well-being, and nobody had the heart to tell her that Hiloni was no more. "Her parents and her grandparents were so happy when she completed her chartered accountancy and found a job. Why did this happen to our girl," Arya said.
Rohit Parab, 11
Resident of Vikhroli, student
Rohit, and his elder brother Aakash, decided they'll help their father on one of the busiest days of his life. Their father Ankush Parab runs a flower shop in Dadar, and on Dussehra eve, he doesn't have time to even sip water. "The boys were supposed to join me at the shop in the afternoon," a sobbing Parab said, unable to come to terms with his youngest son's death. Aakash, who suffered a fracture in the foot, wasn't told of Rohit's death
Alex Corriea, 61
Resident of Virar, sold flowers at Dadar
Alex Corriea looked forward to Dussehra and Diwali because this period is peak season in flower business. He's been selling flowers at the Dadar market for the last 35 years, and would take a Virar fast from Dadar to return home. On Friday, however, he decided to go to Elphinstone Road station due to huge rush at Dadar.
Corriea's brother-in-law Paul Gonsalves said Corriea wanted to retire after his younger son Maxvin married next month.
"He worked hard to educate his two sons. He never took leave, and worked every evening from 4 pm to 9 pm. He would be up by 3 am the next day, and sold flowers from 4 am to 9 am," Gonsalves said.
Ankush Jaiswal, 36
Resident of Dadar, he was an engineer
Ankush Jaiswal was the sole earning member of his family comprising his mother, wife, and the couple's 10-year-old son. He had a field job, and was on an assignment when he got trapped on the killer FOB on Friday. His friend Jay said Jaiswal's father died a couple of years ago, and Jaiswal had shouldered the family responsibilities since. "A man who toiled day and night for his family has met such an end. This is injustice," Jay said.
Shubha Shetty, 45 Sujata Alava, 45
Residents of Kanjurmarg, the two were housewives
Neighbours of inseparable friends Shubha and Sujata said such was the bond between the two that they were fated to die together. Every Dussehra eve, the two would go shopping for flowers at the Dadar market. On Friday, in keeping with their yearly routine, they had left their homes early, never to return.
"We just can't believe what has happened," said Shubha's family friend Dayanand Shetty. "The women left for Dadar after their husbands went to work. Both families and the couples' friends are absolutely devastated." Shubha leaves behind a daughter while Sujata was mom of two, Shetty said.
Chandrabhaga Ingale, 50
Resident of Kanjurmarg, she was a house help
Ingale was on her way to the Dadar market to buy flowers for Dussehra. Saturday would have been a rare day off from work for Ingale, who had shouldered her family's responsibility after her husband, a loader, was diagnosed with heart ailment. "She had seven children and her youngest child is a 10-year-old girl," Ingale's brother Raju said. "My sister would go hungry to fund her kids' education. She certainly did not deserve to die such a death," he said.
Vijay Bahadur, 50
Resident of Ghansoli, he was a tailor
"A poor man has lost his life. Tomorrow, everyone, including the media, will forget who Vijay Bahadur was," said his friend Hansraj Kanojia. Bahadur, worked at a private firm in Dadar, was on his way to office when he died in the stampede. "He leaves behind a wife and an 18-year-old son. There's nobody to look after them now," Kanojia said.
Suresh Jaiswal, 50
Resident of Andheri, he was a fruit seller
Late on Friday when Mirror met with Jaiswal's sister Kailashvati, she wanted to know what caused her brother's death. "Just two days ago, he was singing and dancing as it was his daughter's ninth birthday. He also has a 10-year-old son. This (Friday) morning, he left home saying he was going to buy flowers at Dadar. It's a black Dussehra for us," Kailashvati said.
Jyotibha Chavan, 29
Resident of Mumbra, he was a customs agent
Chavan's wife was not told about her husband's death until late Friday, when his friends and family members were waiting outside KEM Hospital to collect his body. Chavan's family home is in Satara and he lived with his family in a Mumbra chawl. A couple of weeks ago, his wife delivered a boy, and the couple also have a three-year-old daughter, whose birthday was celebrated two days ago. Chavan's brother-in-law Nitin Pawar said, "He was very hardworking and extremely humble. I don't have the heart to even look my sister in the eye."
Teresa Fernandez, 39
Resident of Dadar, she worked at a pvt firm
Usually, Ferdandez preferred to walk to her workplace, or take a taxi. On Friday, her inconsolable husband Richard kept muttering, "Why Teresa why, why did you board the train?" He'll never find out. "The life of common people in Mumbai is ridiculously difficult. There's no guarantee that a person who leaves for work in the morning will return home safely," he said.
Richard was particularly angry at politicians, who he said "merely visit hospitals after calamities". "What was my wife's fault? She died because of somebody's negligence," he said.
Mushtaq Riyan, 45
Resident of Mumbra, worked for a pvt firm
Mushtaq Riyan worked in Parel for the last five years, and his was a field job. His colleague in the marketing department, Harish Sharma, said, "I called him up when he did not reach office. After messages regarding stampede started circulating, I called up his relative, who later informed us he had died."
Mushtaq's wife Ruby Khatun, sister Bilkis Sheikh, and son Adir also rushed to hospital. "He was the sole earning member of his family," Mushtaq's brother Mohammad Waseem said.
Mukesh Mishra, 22
Resident of Sion, he worked for a pvt firm
Mishra had arrived in Mumbai only six months ago, and was staying with his relatives in Sion. His cousin Ashish Tiwari said he had found work at a garment factory, and the family realised something was wrong when they received a call from his office saying he had not reported to work. "This is a particularly hard time for all of us, especially Mukesh's parents. His father is a small-time farmer in UP, and was banking on his son finding employment in Mumbai," Tiwari said.
Meena Walhekar, 35
Resident of Ulhasnagar, she was a govt employee
Walhekar worked as fund administrator at the state Labour Welfare Board's Elphinstone Road office. The only earning member of her family comprising her parents and two younger brothers, Walhekar changed two trains and travelled two hours every day to reach her office. "This stampede has not only killed Meena, but also her entire family. These netas are talking about bullet trains, but will they own up responsibility for Meena's death?" her uncle Anand Acharya demanded to know.
Shraddha Varpe, 25
Resident of Kalyan, she was a govt employee
Shraddha Varpe worked in the same office as Meena Walhekar, and both women had gotten off the train together, along with Varpe's father Kishore, who was their senior colleague at the state Labour Welfare Board. In fact, Kishore spoke to Shraddha minutes before she died.
Shraddha had joined the Labour Welfare Board only a year ago, her brother Rupesh said. "My father called her up as it was raining heavily. Later, when he witnessed the stampede, he repeatedly dialled her phone but she didn't answer. Fearing the worst, he rushed to KEM where the injured were taken, and fainted on spotting her body," Rupesh said.
Mayuresh Haldankar, 20
Resident of Worli, he worked in pvt firm
Haldankar worked in a firm at Mazgaon, and was on an assignment when he was caught in the stampede on Friday. "He was the sole earning member of his family and shouldered the responsibility of his parents and a younger sister. He was funding his sister's education," Haldankar's friend Anil said.
Priyanka Pasalkar, 22
Resident of Kurla, was a software engineer
Pasalkar worked for a private firm in Worli, and as part of her daily commute, would take a cab to office from Parel station. Such was her academic brilliance that she was known as 'scholar' in her neighbourhood. "She had a degree in information technology and software engineering from MH Saboo Siddik College of Engineering. She was a college topper in 2016 and had got a job through campus placement," her neighbour Ashish Shejale said.
Her colleague Santosh Tikekar, who was at the KEM Hospital, said Pasalkar died on the way to hospital. "A medical student told us she had checked her pulse at the station and she was alive," Tikekar said. Pasalkar's father Balu works as a telephone operator in BMC, and it was her aim to give her family all the comforts. "Every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing," she had posted on social media recently.
Masood Sheikh, 35 and his friend
Masood, a resident of Govandi, and Shakeel, from Mumbra, were cousins who worked at the same garment factory on Elphinstone Road. Masood took the Elphinstone-Parel FOB every day for the last 20 years, and on Friday, he died after falling off the bridge steps. "He was gasping for breath when brought to hospital," his father-in-law Jaan Mohammad said.
Masood leaves behind his wife and four children, while Shakeel is survived by his wife. "Shakeel had joined his cousin some years ago and was very happy that there was someone to look after him at work. We still can't believe both of them are dead," a relative said.
—Lata Mishra, Alka Dhupkar, Linah Baliga and Rahi Gaikwad contributed to the report.

Know The Importance, Story And Muhurat Of Dussehra Festival
Tumblr media
Date, Auspicious Timings And Importance Of Dussehra 2017
Coming on the heels of the vibrant, pulsating festival of Navaratri is the festival of Dussehra, which marks the victory of good over evil. This year Dussehra festival falls on September 30, 2017. Dussehra is celebrated around 20 days prior to Diwali, the festival of lights. There are many legends in Hindu folklore which recount the stories and significance of the festival. The most widespread legend is that Dussehra festival, which is also known as Vijaya Dashami, is the day on which Lord Rama killed the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who had adbucted Lord Rama's wife Sita, and it signaled the victory of good over evil.
Shubh Muhurat on Dussehra
The nine day Navratri Festival culminates in Dussehra. Durga puja is also a part of Navratri celebrations. People finally immerse the Goddesses' idols on Dussehra in West Bengal and other eastern parts of the country. It is said that any time on the Dussehra is auspicious. We don't need to see any special muhurat for buying something new (like property, vehicle, etc) on Dussehra day as the entire day is full of positivity and  good luck.
Ramlila And The Burning Of The Effigies Of Ravana
Dussehra festival is celebrated all over the country by organizing fairs, enacting the Ramlila, bursting of firecrackers and finally the burning of the effigies of Ravana, and his brother Kumbhakarana and son Meghnad. During. Ramlila is a drama enacted on stage which depicts the most momentous events of the great epic Ramayan right from the time of the birth of Lord Rama, the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana, the meeting with Hanuman and Sugreev and finally the slaying of the demon king Ravana. Even God takes human form to finish the evil. But by winning His grace man can do anything. We have the means to win  His grace for you. Are you interested in enriching your life? Do you want to make success in business? If yes, buy the Business Ask A Question Report, resolve your query about future and surge ahead in business.
Goddess Durga Slays The Fierce Mahishasura
As per another legend, Dussehra is celebrated with great fervor in the eastern parts of the country, chiefly in Kolkata, to observe the killing of the feared demon Mahishasura by Goddess Durga after a long-drawn-out battle. For four days during Dussehra celebration, people pray to an idol of Goddess Durga performing various rituals, and on the fifth day the idol is submerged in a river amidst great pomp and ceremony. It commemorates the return of the Goddess to her husband Lord Shiva's abode on Mount Kailash after slaying Mahishasura. The symbolic message here is that we too should keep our distance from evil forces and only stay in the company of good people. The power of Mother Goddess is infinite. And you can win her grace using astrological tools. You can get any problem resolved including marriage. Are you facing problems in marriage? You can get it solved using our Marriage Ask a Question Report.
The Tree That Protects The Weapons Of the Pandavas
Yet another legend about Dussehra has its roots in the other great epic of India, the Mahabharata. When the five Pandava brothers, who each had a distinctive weapon, are banished to the forest, they hide their weapons in a tree. On their return from exile, they find their weapons still safe in the tree, so they worship the tree before going back to do battle with their sworn enemies the Kauravas, which they eventually win with the help of Lord Krishna.
Auspicious Day To Buy Vehicles And Property
Dussehra usually comes in the months of September or October immediately after the nine-day festivities of Navaratri. It marks the ending of the monsoon season, and is also called Vijaya Dashami. Dusshera in Sanskrit literally means 'remover of bad fate', while for some it marks the time to break their nine-day fast of Navaratri. Dussehra is also considered a very auspicious day for buying vehicles and property.
