Natori is such a MOOD in the way he is like "I'm totally fine juggling two demanding jobs, thank you. Lack of sleep? That cannot diminish my brilliance haha. I don't have friends, I've pushed them away for their own good which was totally the responsible thing to do. I'm not lonely though 🙂 And I have no male friends in particular, Matoba absolutely doesn't count, wdym? Oh yeah, my phone was unplugged, it's just so I don't get cursed haha. And I can totally take care of this troubled teen with a long history of trauma, in fact, I can adopt him so he could live in my bare-ass apartment with an empty fridge. every scene in this episode shows natsume's growth. right at the beginning, he asks shigeru to teach him how to make a flowerbed - no longer is he going to the library for books because he can't let himself trust anyone enough to ask for help. he agrees to help the youkai but asserts his boundaries consistently. he doesn't hide what's happening from tanuma. he's making peace with his memories, building a bridge between his past and his future. he trusts now that he has a future. he smiles fakely exactly zero times the entire episode. i'm so impressed with midorikawa's mastery in portraying slow character growth over time. all of this feels earned and 1000% more emotionally resonant because it follows from and builds on everything that came before. it coheres.

Natsume's book of friends is a feel good anime, it's just the type of feel good that you rarely get anymore, it's the last sunset of that 7th grade summer, or a full moon in winter you freezed your ass off to stare at for more than an hour, or being the last to leave your dorm room at the end of the year, or going home from a life changing concert but it's already night and so so quiet and your boots are making the only other noise except those two servers closing a late restaurant

And you feel like crying because you stop to think, gods, i might never experience this again and i don't mind. But you do, and you will.
