Help us relaunch ABC's with the Vejigantes!
Help this two-time award-winning children's book find new life after unexpectedly going out of print!
Can you imagine the excitement of releasing your first children's book and not only having it do well, but also win not one award, but two? Exciting, right? You celebrate and you share the good news and set up events to promote this successful book...
Only to discover that the publisher, due to unforeseen circumstances, is having to close down operations and your bright little award-winning gem is suddenly no more.
Devastating. Absolutely devastating.
This is the story of Liz DeJesus (winner of the 2023 Delaware Individual Artist Fellowship: Emerging Literature: Creative Non-fiction), Amber Davis, and ABCs with the Vejigantes (awarded 1st place at the 2023 Delaware Press Association Communications Contest Awards and 1st place at the 2023 NFPW Professional Communications Contest).
With your help, it doesn't have to be the end of the story.
Shall we resurrect this book in a bigger and better version before the dropped pages have even settled?
I think we can!

For this week of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are spotlighting Phillip V. Sanchez who went from child farmworker to becoming the highest-ranking Latino in the Nixon and Ford presidential administrations.
Born in Pinedale, California to Mexican immigrant parents, Ambassador Sanchez began working beside his mother in the Central Valley fields at the age of six. Believing education was the path to success, he earned his undergraduate and graduate Political Science degrees at California State University, Fresno. While in college, he enlisted in the California Army National Guard. He went on to complete more than 40 years of military service in the California Army National Guard, United States Army, and the United States Army Reserve. He retired with the rank of Colonel. By presidential appointment, from September 1971 to January 1973, Sanchez was the National Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity for Operations (OEO). He had previously been appointed Assistant Director of the OEO for Operations from May to September of 1971. In June 1973, President Nixon appointed Sanchez to the post of U.S. Ambassador to Honduras. Ambassador Sanchez received the high honor of the Order of Morazan from the government of Honduras for his relief efforts in the aftermath of the September 1974 hurricane "Fifi.” On July 29, 1976, by the appointment of President Ford, Sanchez was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Colombia. One of my favorite parts of my recent @siriusxm interview w #jameshetfield @metallica was talking about how many #metallicablacklist songs were sung en espanol, and how that was their way of saluting their diehard Latino fans. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I brought up @juanes covering “Enter Sandman” earlier in the conversation then @jbalvin doing a en fuego version of “Wherever I May Roam” (I know NOW that he’s from Colombia 🇨🇴 and not Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 I apologize for saying the wrong shit, definitely won’t be the last time I mess up on air🙃) and hearing PapaHet’s response and seeing his genuine smile warmed my heart. 🖤 Proudly posting this clip at the end of #nationalhispanicheritagemonth and por todo los fanaticos de #metallica en el mundo! 🌎 Gracias por tu amor METAL🤘🏽🙏🏽🤘🏽 @sxmoctane @sxmliquidmetal #papahet #siriusxm #jbalvin #metallicafamily #metalambassador (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU_0OBQojjy/?utm_medium=tumblr

Small but mighty!  Goldfinches travel to the tropics and back
By: Dana Bivens - Dana is a PAO at the USFWS Portland Regional Office

Did you know, many of the birds we see in the Pacific Northwest in the summer spend their winters in the tropics?  The goldfinch is no exception!  You may have seen this charming bird in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in the spring and summer months.  Goldfinches are a common sight across the continental US and southern Canada.  They are frequent residents at backyard bird feeders, and love to mill about in bushes, fields, and floodplains foraging for seeds.
The bright yellow color and aerial acrobatics of these social birds is a delightful sight to see.  In the winter months, some of these tiny travelers migrate south as far as Mexico.  Weighing in at only 0.7 oz, migrating goldfinches will take up their winter residences in the southern United States, and in northern Mexican states including Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, and along the Gulf of Mexico.  In mild winters they may also be seen much further north.
While many birds make the trip south, some take up year-round residence in the continental United States, and are a common sight around birdfeeders in the winter when food is scarce.  Always pleasant to see on a cold winter day, goldfinches are favorites for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike.
Tumblr media
Migratory birds are an important part to the Pacific Northwest Ecosystem, and we can all help to improve their habitat and make it safer.  Small things like placing bird decals on window glass or keeping cats indoors can help protect all migratory birds, including goldfinches.  If you want to make your backyard or garden a gathering spot for goldfinches, check out this information on making your home a home for wildlife: https://www.fws.gov/oregonfwo/documents/Education/USFWSBackyardBirds.pdf
