National Rhubarb Pie Day
Who knew that such a tasty dessert could be made out of something that is technically classified as a vegetable?!
Though it may look similar to celery, the two are actually not related. Instead, rhubarb is surprisingly a part of the buckwheat family.
National Rhubarb Pie Day was put into place to enjoy, appreciate and celebrate the marvelous and unique flavor that can come from something so simple as a few stalks of garden rhubarb mixed with a bit of sugar and placed in a crust.
History of National Rhubarb Pie Day
A vegetable that is a bit sour when eaten on its own but turns very tart and tasty when cooked with sugar, rhubarb is the star of the show when it comes to National Rhubarb Pie Day!
When rhubarb began being cultivated in England in the 1600s, it was discovered to be a rather prolific spring vegetable. However, it took a bit longer for rhubarb to make its way to the United States. The story goes that Benjamin Franklin sent seeds for rhubarb from Scotland to Pennsylvania in 1772 and a few years later it grew in popularity in New England.
Now, rhubarb can be found growing abundantly in many parts of the world where it is used in all sorts of recipes, from desserts and cakes to muffins and jams. But, obviously, one of the most famous and beloved ways that a cook can use rhubarb in the kitchen is by making it into a delicious rhubarb pie.
National Rhubarb Pie Day is here to celebrate this humble, simple, and delicious creation!
How to Celebrate National Rhubarb Pie Day
Pie is a category of dessert that has so many different options and rhubarb pie is a unique and special expression of this tasty treat. Get to celebrating National Rhubarb Pie Day by implementing some of these ideas, or coming up with some creative ones of your own:
Make a Rhubarb Pie
One clear and sensible way to celebrate National Rhubarb Pie Day is to, of course, engage in some culinary artistry in the kitchen and whip up a little homemade, hand-crafted rhubarb pie!
Start with preparing the rhubarb by washing it, cutting off the ends and chopping it up into bite-sized pieces. Then, either prepare a homemade pie crust or use a refrigerated crust for a quick fix.
The filling for a rhubarb pie is not difficult to make and it doesn’t even require cooking it in advance (unless the rhubarb has been previously frozen). Many recipes can be found through a quick online search, where some people like to blend their rhubarb with strawberries and others prefer to let the rhubarb be the star of the show!
Typically, the filling can be made by mixing the rhubarb with lemon juice, sugar, and cornstarch and then tossing it into the pie crust. Add a top (lattice or standard), brush with egg white and bake the pie for about 45 minutes.
For a distinctly British flair, serve the slices of rhubarb pie warm and with a generous helping of cream or homemade custard.
Plant Some Rhubarb in the Garden
In honor of National Rhubarb Pie Day, perhaps it’s time to do some planting in the garden or, if it’s a bit too early in the year, at least it can be fun to do some dreaming and planning about what the garden will yield.
Rhubarb is a vegetable that grows well in cooler climates, such as the northern parts of North America or Europe. The plant loves tons of sun, but can tolerate partial shade if that’s the only option. Rhubarb crowns can be planted in late fall or early spring, but the seeds can be started inside at other times.
Of course, it is important to make the general reminder early on that the leaves of the rhubarb plant are toxic and considered poisonous to humans and animals. So those who are considering growing their own rhubarb should be aware and careful that it is tucked away safely from children and pets.
Host a National Rhubarb Pie Day Bake Off
Have some friends who really love baking pies? Well, then National Rhubarb Pie Day will be right up their alley. Host a bake off to see who gets bragging rights to say that they can make the best rhubarb pie in the area – or at least among that particular group of friends.
Decide in advance who the participants will be, determining who would like to be the baking contestants and who would enjoy the important job of being a judge! Set the rules for the bake off, including whether alternative recipes such as strawberry-rhubarb pie is allowed, and then send the people home to gather supplies and do their baking.
Meet up on the day of the contest to host a taste test to see whose rhubarb pie wins!
Get a New Rhubarb Pie Cookbook
Celebrate National Rhubarb Pie Day by learning more and strengthening those culinary skills in the kitchen through the use of books. Or just reading about it in a fun manner! Whether checking them out from the library or purchasing them in support of a local bookstore, this is the day to get those creative juices flowing.
Consider picking up a copy of one these books that include stellar information about rhubarb pie, as well as tips on growing and other fun bits:
The Rhubarb Pie Baking Book: Cooking and Baking like the Dessert Professionals by Alex Deen (2020). This little paperback offers recipes with a traditional background as well as tips and tricks for the modern baker.
Rhubarb: more than just pies by Sandi Vitt (2000). Taking things to the pie and so far beyond, this book offers tons of insight and information on how best to use a plethora of rhubarb in your kitchen.
Rhubarb Rhubarb: A Correspondence Between a Hopeless Gardener and a Hopeful Cook by Mary Jane Paterson and Jo Thompson. Share in the delightful anecdotes and stories between two women trying to share their skills with one another.
Rhubarb: The Pie Plant by Roby Jose Ciju (2013). This little booklet gets the reader started on the growing end, before the pie is ready to be baked.

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
July 16, 2024
“GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE”
Hey Wilson, how many times have you heard Republicans say,“Guns don't kill people, people kill people.” Way too many. We heard it after Sandy Hook; we heard it after the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas; we heard it after Uvalde, Texas – the list of mass shootings in this country goes on and on and on. There may be limits on the First Amendment but with the Second Amendment, not so much. We have some 400 million firearms in the United States – more than one for every man, woman and child. This is a violent country with well over 40,000 gun-related deaths per year – an average of 120 per day. The United States imported or manufactured 2.8 million AR-15 assault-style rifles in 2020 alone. It is by far the biggest selling firearm and was designed for one purpose – to kill people. Not surprisingly Donald Trump was shot by an assault rifle purchased legally. Since 2016, Trump more than any other major political figure, has contributed to a rising trend in violent rhetoric. Now, however, Republicans are blaming Democrats for the attempted assassination, as though Dems had called for the violent insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021. No one knows why 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks wanted to kill Trump but one thing is for sure – he wanted to do it with a gun. Call it freedom.
DEMONIC PORTAL OPENS OVER WHITE HOUSE
“Satan get thee behind me.” That's just one of the phrases heard echoing around Milwaukee's Republican National Convention where Democrats aren't political opponents but enemies to be smitten down like Kraken. Christian Nationalism has swarmed over the GOP confab, preaching that America's godliness is under siege and Christian soldiers must rise up to take it back. It's a fun-loving bunch who can throw down with the best. A “demonic portal” has opened above the Biden White House, said Donald Trump's fixer Roger Stone in The Washington Post. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn, called former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) a demon, the Post reported. As many MAGA acolytes know after watching a viral Trump video, God sent him to Earth to save it. They have, along with the former president, himself, compared Trump's trials and tribulations to the plight of Jesus of Nazareth. Proof positive: God saved Trump from an assassination attempt last weekend. Earlier, Trump declared election day, Nov. 5, as “Christian Visibility Day.” But it's not love the Trump faithful came to Milwaukee to spread but a call to arms. Matthew 10:34-36: “I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Oh yeah, and God bless America.
HEY GOV. COX, GO AHEAD, EAT YOUR DAMN CAKE
OK, we know politicians can talk out of both sides their mouths, but this takes the cake: (WARNING – possible neck injuries due to whiplash.) At the National Governors Association’s meeting last week Gov. Spencer Cox said he would not vote for Donald Trump but hopes he wins. Eat your cake and have it, too? Incredible. Yep, he's the same Gov. Cox who urged us to be kind to transsexuals and then signed legislation to keep them from public restrooms. What is wrong with our politics? Here's a clue: The Utah Supreme Court just ruled the state legislature can not mess with citizen initiatives – in this case, one that would create an independent commission to draw voting districts. The initiative passed after Utahns – particularly Salt Lake County residents – grew sick and tired of Republican gerrymandering that sliced up the county like rhubarb pie. True to form lawmakers twisted the public's petition into the same old pretzel. Voters sued. And guess who submitted an amicus brief on behalf of the legislature – Spencer “Disagree Better” Cox. Surprise! The court's unanimous ruling was met with sour grapes from GOP leaders. House Speaker Mike Schultz and Senate President Stuart Adams issued a joint statement, saying in part, “Boohoo. Who's democracy is this, anyway. Boohoo, boohoo.”
Post script – Well that's gunna do it for another historic week here at Smart Bomb where our staff keeps track of political rhetoric so you don't have to. Utah Sen. Mike Lee: “We need government control, not gun control. Otherwise, tribalism advances at the national level.” WTF. Former White House attorney Ty Cobb: “[I] think it was always Judge Aileen Cannon's objective, frankly, to prevent this (Trump's classified documents case) from going to trial.” House Speaker Mike Johnson: “When the message goes out constantly that the election of Donald Trump would be a threat to democracy, that the republic would end, I mean it, it heats up the environment.” Ohio Sen J.D.Vance (just selected as Trump's running mate): “I’m truly skeptical that Mike Pence’s life was ever in danger (on Jan. 6). I think politics and politics people like to really exaggerate things from time to time.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC): “Corruption, without consequence, infects all it touches. And that is why Congress has a constitutional and moral obligation to hold these (Supreme Court) justices accountable...” she said introducing a pair of resolutions calling for the impeachment and removal of Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
Hells bells Wilson, it's kinda like we've collided with a parallel universe where everything is crazy or maybe someone put LSD in the water supply. You know, they are selling all kinds of new bottled water said to be magic. Who knows. What we do know is that you and the band have something apropos for this moment in history. So, hit it, Wilson:
One pill makes you larger And one pill makes you small And the ones that mother gives you Don't do anything at all Go ask Alice When she's ten feet tall And if you go chasing rabbits And you know you're going to fall Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar Has given you the call Call Alice When she was just small When the men on the chessboard Get up and tell you where to go And you've just had some kind of mushroom And your mind is moving low Go ask Alice I think she'll know When logic and proportion Have fallen sloppy dead And the White Knight is talking backwards And the Red Queen's off with her head Remember what the dormouse said Feed your head Feed your head

June 3rd-July 5th, Washington
I took the new kayak out for a paddle on June 6th to Freshwater Bay, where I discovered the perfect vacation home when we become rich;-)
Our Rhubarb plant became prolific this summer, and I made a great Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. The leaves are ridiculous!
Gae volunteers with 2 different sewing groups, and showed me her handiwork from the one that makes quilts to donate... NICE!
I finished 2 trilobite based yard sculptures during the fall quarter at Peninsula College, ready to enhance the gardens:-)
I thought I'd include an older garden piece that is perched on the garden bench made from the fir we took down to get some sunlight.
I got out to Peninsula Golf Course for a round on the 13th, a windy day with beautiful views of the Blackball (Victoria) ferry arriving at Port Angeles.
I joined my friend Mike for some single track riding at Heritage Forest near Port Gamble on the 14th, where Mike showed me some recent enhancements with 30 foot tall jumps for the adventurous (read "insane").
We did enjoy the views afforded by the last clear-cutting of the land in between nicely banked single tracks.
I joined 2 ceramics-room friends on the 18th in install screens on top of the exhaust stacks at a couple national park locations. Stinky, but necessary volunteer work:-)
Jim, Tom and I did get to hike out to Oil City from one of the toilets, which tipped the days efforts even farther to the enjoyable side of the scale.
We drove to Seattle on the 21st, on our way to Enumclaw, where we joined out Toastmaster friend Betty for nice lunch and visit.
Betty's complex requires visitor badges, and as always, Gae didn't disappoint in her approach to formal requirements!
In Enumclaw we got to visit with Daniel for a day before he left for an Alaska cruise. Nina seemed a little uneasy for a quick nail grind.
We enjoyed Melissa's company as well before their departure, as did the 5 dogs!
I drove Daniel and Melissa to Pier 91 to catch their cruise ship on the 23rd, and snuck in a nice walk with my buddy Andy around Seward Park.
We spent most of the week hanging around, I was mostly alone on the couch, but Gae was like a dog magnet, as always.
I think Daniel and Melissa "might" have had the better end of the situation, partying and taking in the spectacular Alaskan views.
Gae got out with her church hiking group for a good walk at Hurricane Ridge on the July 2nd.
We had a nice 4th of July visit with my sister Francie, Rob and Ben, keeping the dogs calm through the noisy fireworks.
I joined Joel, with Streamkeepers, on July 5th, to install dissolved oxygen loggers at 3 different spots along the Dungeness and it's side streams. A little bush-whacking for a cause is always good fun:-)
We got this great picture of my nephew Zach and his newest baby, Oliver... oh so sweet!
Ben sent us this great picture a day after our visit with them on the 4th... so much nicer than my candid photo without faces!

National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day
Since #rhubarb takes on the flavor of the fruit or vegetable it is paired with, it is an excellent complement to many recipes.
It was the beginning of the 19th century when the pie with rhubarbs started gaining popularity.
#RhubarbPies are quite popular not just in the US, but also in Canada and UK.
Rhubarbs are packed with nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin K, magnesium, calcium, antioxidants, and fiber.
The rhubarb present in the pie also helps in reducing blood pressure, burning fat, and in also generating myelin for your brain.
Rhubarb is usually considered a vegetable. In the United States, however, a New York court decided in 1947 that, since it was used in the United States as a fruit, it counted as a fruit for the purposes of regulations and duties. A side effect was a reduction on imported rhubarb tariffs, as tariffs were higher for vegetables than fruits.
