Final Match Card for June 22nd + Match Predictions
After the events for Pro Wrestling NOAH from Saturday and Sunday, we now have the official match card for Episode 5 of "Star Navigation 2023" as another injury has caused a card change once again.
Back on Saturday at "Green Journey 2023 in Nagoya" during his challenge for the GHC Heavyweight Championship against Jake Lee, Takashi Sugiura apparently dislocated his eye that got worse during his 6-man tag match the next day in Osaka. He has since elected to take surgery to repair the eye. At the current time, there is no timetable for his return. Due to the injury, he's been removed from Thursday's show and has been replaced by Daiki Inaba who was to compete in the second match on the card. Akitoshi Saito (who was not booked to compete) will take his spot in that second match.
With that said, here are the predictions for Episode 5 of "Star Navigation 2023"
Tumblr media
Opening Match Prediction: I consider this almost too easy to predict at the same time a little hard. Out of all the makeshift Kongo/NOAH teams back in January, it was Katsuhiko Nakajima and Seiki Yoshioka that were the most consistent and that consistency managed them to win the 2023 Scramble Tag Tournament. Now, more than 5 months after winning the tournament, both are together under the main unit banner facing Manabu Soya and Hajime Ohara who were each pinned by Nakajima this past weekend. The prediction here is that the team of Nakajima and Yoshioka will win with Nakajima pinning Ohara once again.
Match #2 Prediction: Night One with Shuhei Taniguchi as the newest member of "REAL" didn't go the way they wanted it to go. Don't think that'll be the case in this second match. "REAL" for the win.
Match #3 Prediction: Last-minute card change as Daiki Inaba replaces Takashi Sugiura in what could've been the last tag match post-title for Lee and Sugiura. Originally would've gone with the team of Sugiura and Legacy but due to Sugiura's injury and the withdrawal, this match here...going with Jake Lee and Jack Morris for the win.
Match #4 Prediction: A very intriguing 6-man tag that could somewhat determine HAYATA's next challenger while at the same time begin a feud between LEONA and Eita. Prediction here is the team of Yoshinari Ogawa, Kai Fujimura, and LEONA getting the win over Kaito Kiyomiya, Eita, and HAYATA. And the feeling is post-match, there maybe a surprise instore for the losing team.
Match #5 Prediction: This is Hi69's last test to see if what he had learned from Kongo is enough for him to move to the next step. So far, he's 0-3 and have to wonder what will happen if he loses this last bout against Shuji Kondo. My prediction for this match is Shuji will win in dominating fashion.
Match #6 Prediction: Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. is looking for his next challenger for the GHC National Championship and apparently has his eyes set on AMAKUSA. Interesting note I learned last year is that the GHC National Championship is an Openweight Championship meaning anyone can challenge it so if AMAKUSA is to be the next challenger, he has to pin the champion. Also, Dante Leon and Ninja Mack, need to keep an eye on those two because though they are teaming up together, cannot really trust Dante Leon. With all the elements in this match, I'm predicting here that the team of Naomichi Marufuji, AMAKUSA, and Atsushi Kotoge emerge victorious.
GHC Junior Tag Team Championship Prediction: Many are predicting here that there will be new champions crowned in Korakuen Hall. Don't think that's happening anytime soon. My prediction is that somehow and someway Tadasuke and YO-HEY emerge victorious but in post-match, will be attacked by the next challenger team.
Main Event Prediction: After Katsuhiko Nakajima and Kenoh went to a 45-minute draw back on May 31st; Go Shiozaki approached Kenoh with the request of a singles match. Though he accepted it, since then Kenoh has basically been stating that Go has done "nothing" before his return while he's been seen (in his eyes) as the one that kept NOAH a float. Not sure if Kenoh knows this but I learned that most athletes while on rehab, never really tweet or post on Instagram. They're mostly silent so that they can focus on getting 100% which is what I believe Go was doing. As for who wins this match, this is must-win for Go Shiozaki. These two have met 4 times (2 of them taking place in Korakuen Hall) with the record being 0-3-1 in favor of Kenoh. Back in 2020, Shiozaki almost beat Kenoh in a double-title match but the clock ran out. Will that be the same case this time around? Unlike NJPW websites, a time-limit is never listed until we see on-screen, so it's unknown what the time-limit to the main event is but if this match is 30 minutes, they'll go the full 30. If it's 45 minutes, then I believe Go will win with minutes to spare. Again, this match, must-win for Go Shiozaki. Has to beat Kenoh to prove to himself and to the world that he still has it. And the feeling is that should he emerge victorious, then he'll call out Timothy Thatcher for a singles match while at the same time declare himself and Nakajima as the next challengers for the GHC Tag Team Championships.
Episode 5 of "Star Navigation 2023" comes Thursday June 22nd at 6:30 PM Local Time/5:30 AM Eastern/4:30 AM Central/2:30 AM Pacific on ABEMA with Japanese Commentary and Wrestle Universe with English Commentary. Go to timeanddate.com and type in the city you're currently live in to find the start time in your area if the start time is not listed on here.
Final note, also on Thursday, we will find out who will be the 2023 N-1 Victory Participants. So far, only Jake Lee has announced his entry. Again, due to Kaito Kiyomiya withdrawing back on June 10th to focus on NJPW's G1 Climax Tournament, we are already guaranteed a new N-1 Victory winner unless that winner ends up being either Kenoh or Katsuhiko Nakajima. Thursday, find out who joins Jake Lee in one of the cruelest tournaments of the summer, N-1 Victory.

Why Hiroshi Tanahashi is the Perfect Face
 2021.7.27
THE Ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling, a three-time winner of the G1 Climax, and one of the most decorated performers in modern Japanese wrestling. Hiroshi Tanahashi is the perfect face of NJPW. When you watch Tanahashi wrestle, be it in front of a small crowd at the mid-pandemic Korakuen, or in a packed Tokyo Dome main event, you'll definitely notice one thing- the fans LOVE him. It's hard not to, though, considering how important he is to NJPW's current worldwide following.
Tanahashi made his début for NJPW in October of 1999, having finished training in the NJPW dojo. Him, Katsuyori Shibata, and Shinsuke Nakamura were widely regarded as the top three prospects of that time period, and thus were pushed more. In the early to mid-2000's, NJPW found a sharp decline in viewership and fans due to the Inoki-era style of wrestling, which included MMA fights and sport-like angles, rather than the puroresu we all love today. This strange sort of attitude about wrestling not only hindered NJPW's growth, but Tanahashi's career as a wrestler.
Tumblr media
Tanahashi and Nakamura
In 2002, Tanahashi was actually stabbed two times by his girlfriend at the time, after trying to end the relationship. After taking himself to the hospital, he would make a full recovery, but this incident ended up gathering the attention of his entire nation, who all wanted to see him return to the ring. He came back to wrestling in front of a sold out crowd, as a result of just how much attention the unfortunate attack had garnered. From then, through 2007, when the Inoki family left NJPW, Tanahashi was a well loved member of the roster. The way Tanahashi unintentionally helped push the company back into the international spotlight after so many people lost interest in Inoki's strange choices is incredible, a feat that nobody would've been able to replicate.
Alongside pushing NJPW back into the favour of fans and people who never even watched wrestling worldwide, eventually bringing it back into the number 2 spot for wrestling promotions, Tanahashi has had MANY title reigns in the company's history. When you think of record-setting title reigns, specifically for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, you would typically think about Okada's title reigns, which add up to over a year in total days. However, in July of 2006, Tanahashi won the heavyweight title, repeating the feat another 7 times, for a total 8 reigns- the most one person ever had with that title.
Tumblr media
Tanahashi for Weekly Pro Wrestling
One of the most well known of these title reigns wasn't because of what happened during the time he held it, but rather, who he won it from. At Wrestle Kingdom 13, Tanahashi beat Kenny Omega in an amazing match for the heavyweight title- a match that, to this day, was Omega's last bout in NJPW. Tanahashi also had two great runs with the intercontinental title, and has been an IWGP tag champion alongside Kota Ibushi, in a team fittingly dubbed "Golden☆Ace." Up until a few months ago, Tanahashi was the NEVER openweight champion, dropping the title to Jay White.
Tumblr media
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Shingo Takagi in early 2021 for the NEVER openweight title. Takagi was also Tanahashi’s opponent at Wrestle Grand Slam in the Tokyo Dome.
Aside from amazing in-ring history, Tanahashi is one of the top faces for a reason- his personality. Always seen with a smile on his face, a colourful outfit, and his iconic feathered hair, Hiroshi Tanahashi really is the perfect good guy. It doesn't matter who he's placed against, there'll always be someone cheering for him. Just a few days ago, Tanahashi main evented a small crowd at the Tokyo Dome, and even in loss, was cheered on by his opponent. It's impossible to dislike Hiroshi Tanahashi, and thus- he truly is the perfect face.

Battle Riot III preview
This show is happening today, July 10, but it's actually a TV taping, so the only way to see it live is to be there in the building. That seems really weird, because I'd spent about a month getting psyched to check it out, and then a few days ago I realized MLW had never actually provided any broadcast or streaming information. They waited until the day before the show to finally explain that it will air on July 24 on beIN Sports, and "later this month" on Youtube. So that's weird.
Anyway, maybe I'll reblog this in a couple of weeks, to remind myself to watch it.
Battle Riot - This is a 40-man gauntlet battle royale with timed entries. Two men start the match, and every 60 seconds an randomly selected participant enters. The match can't end until everyone has entered, but they can be eliminated from the match at any time. Eliminations occur when a participant submits, gets pinned, or exits the ring over the top rope to the floor. After 39 eliminations, the last man in the match is declared the winner. The winner earns the right to challenge the MLW world heavyweight champion whenever they want.
So far twenty-eight entrants have been announced:
Alex Hammerstone (MLW national openweight champion)
Alex Kane (the "Suplex Assassin")
Aramis
Arez
Bu Ku Dao
Calvin Tankman (a big mean guy)
Daivari (Muhammad Hassan and Great Khali's buddy)
Davey Richards (former ROH world champion)
EJ Nduka (recently released from WWE developmental)
Gino Medina
Gringo Loco
Ikuro Kwon
Josef Samael (former NWA world champion)
Kevin Ku
King Mo (former Bellator MMA fighter)
King Muertes (fka Mil Muertes in Lucha Underground)
Kit Osbourne
Lee Moriarty (former IWTV champion)
Mads Krügger (a scary monster heel guy)
Marshall Von Erich (son of the legendary Kevin Von Erich)
Myron Reed (MLW world middleweight champion)
Richard Holliday (IWA Caribbean champion)
Ross Von Erich (also son of the legendary Kevin Von Erich)
Savio Vega (the 90s WWE guy)
Simon Gotch (from WWE's Vaudevillains)
TJP (former WWE cruiserweight champion)
Tom Lawlor (current NJPW Strong champion)
Zenshi (fka Shynron in Chikara)
That leaves twelve slots open for last-minute announcements and surprise entrants. Some of those spots could be used to debut stars that WWE recently released, or other big-name free agents. But I'd manage my expectations if I were you. They could just as easily bring in some old-timers, or minor-league journeymen, or no-name recruits.
I'm not up on MLW storylines heading into this match. All I've heard is that MLW's world champion, Jacob Fatu, has refused to defend the title against Alex Hammerstone. So Hammerstone needs to win this, moreso than anyone else in the match. Whether he does win remains to be seen; they could swerve the audience and find another way to get to Fatu-Hammerstone. It feels like the other strong choices to go over would be Lawlor, Richards, and Muertes, but I don't have a good sense of who MLW wants to push as they come out of lockdown.
The cool thing is that MLW doesn't have anyone so big that it would disrupt the pecking order to just suddenly push a total nobody out of nowhere. Like, in a Royal Rumble there are usually 6-8 world-class superstars and one of them has to win, and a dozen or so geeks who can't possibly win. But in MLW the gap between the top guys and the geeks isn't as vast, so it's easier to do a huge upset.
Richard Holliday vs. King Muertes - This is for Holliday's IWA Caribbean heavyweight championship. From what I gather Savio Vega brought the belt with him from Puerto Rico, and Holliday stole it after beating Vega in a non-title match. I get the impression that MLW initially didn't recognize his claim to the title, but now they seem to have stopped giving a shit. The match is billed as being contested under "Caribbean rules," which just means anything goes.
Muertes is a really big, mean Puerto Rican, so I'm reasonably sure he's the favorite in this match. He's part of a storyline where Dario Cueto from Lucha Underground has come to MLW to start over with "Azteca Underground." So I'm kinda thinking Muertes isn't going to lose anytime soon.
Ross Von Erich & Marshall Von Erich vs. Tom Lawlor & Kevin Ku - This is billed as a "bunkhouse brawl," which just means there are no disqualifications and the wrestlers are encouraged to use whatever they want as weapons. Lawlor turned on the Von Erichs in late 2019 and relaunched his faction Team Filthy, which Ku joined back in September. (Lawlor actually has versions of Team Filthy in both MLW and NJPW Strong, which seem to exist in parallel universes.)
I'm actually not even sure this match is really going to happen. It was announced last week but I can't find it on the MLW website, so it may have been quietly pulled from the card. I'm also not sure who I would pick to win--it would mainly depend on how soon they want to end the feud, which got delayed so badly by the pandemic.
Davey Richards vs. TJP - Richards recently returned to the ring after a lengthy absence. He was a big deal in ROH, PWG, and the indy scene until about 2013. Then he joined TNA/Impact right when the company fell off a cliff, and left in 2017 to become a doctor. I'm not sure he formally retired, but I wasn't expecting to ever see him again until MLW announced that they signed him. He's a fairly big "get" for MLW, which probably gives you an idea of the kind of star power they're likely to attract.
As for TJP, he's worked some MLW shows but he's not exactly a regular. He's more an Impact and NJPW Strong guy. So it makes sense to feed him to Richards here, and put Davey on course to chase a champonship.

Naito v. KENTA for Double Titles at New Beginning in Osaka 2/9/2020; Fantasticamania Lineups Announced; Manabu Nakanishi Retiring 2/22/2020
Tumblr media
NJPW held a press conference last night, where, among other things, the main event for The New Beginning in Osaka was announced, as Double Champion Tetsuya Naito will face the challenge of KENTA for both the IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental titles. Naito reiterated his point that he doesn't feel KENTA has really earned it, seeing as he lost the NEVER Openweight belt to Hirooki Goto, and said Kazuchika Okada, Kota Ibushi and Jay White worked harder over the weekend. But here it is, and Naito will face the challenge, on 2/9/2020 at Osaka-jo Hall. No further lineups or match announcements for The New Beginning tours (Japan or USA) have been announced.
Tumblr media
The full Fantasticamania lineups were revealed as well, with the tour starting this Friday 1/10/2020 live on NJPWWorld. The vast majority feature matches start during the four Tokyo Korakuen Hall shows starting on 1/16/2020. However, at the opener in Osaka, the main event will be a match in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the career of Shigeo Okumura, in a six-man tag match. Also returning to the Fantasticamania lineup is the Family Tag Tournament, where four teams, of wrestlers related to one another, hold a mini-tournament. This year, what makes this interesting is one of the teams is a tecnico-rudo pairing, as Soberano Jr. teams with Euforia, who usually is partnered with Guerreros Laguneros. The first round will be on the 1/16/2020 show, whilst the 3rd place and Finals will be on 1/17/2020. On 1/19/2020, the main event will be the annual Black Cat Memorial Match, in which Caristico, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tiger Mask IV will face Negro Casas, Euforia & Barbaro Cavernario. Also on this show is a CMLL World Heavyweight title match, as Ultimo Guerrero defends his belt against Satoshi Kojima. On the final night, 1/20/2020, two more title matches take place, as Nueva Generacion Dinamitas (Sanson, Cuatrero & Forastero) defend the Mexican National Trios titles against Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja & Titan. The tour winds up with Caristico defending the NWA World Historic Middleweight belt against Barbaro Cavernario.
Kyosuke Mikami, aka El Desperado of Suzuki-gun, re-assumes his Namajague gimmick from his CMLL excursion days, as he did in last year's edition of the tour.
I will post the full lineups in the Upcoming NJPW Events post due this Thursday.
Tumblr media
Lastly, from this presser, retirements are in the air, as we just saw Jushin Thunder Liger call time on his career yesterday at New Year Dash!!, and referee Tiger Hattori is stepping away at a retirement show on 2/19/2020 at Tokyo Korakuen Hall. Now, a mere three days after Hattori’s send-off, Korakuen Hall will see Manabu Nakanishi end his 27-year career as a wrestler, on 2/22/2020. The one-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion has said a neck injury he suffered has truly limited him, and he is not where he wants to be, so rather than muddle through it, he is retiring instead. I'm sure he will still continue in some capacity at the Dojo. You can read his statements here. I'm not going to lie and say Nakanishi was a favorite of mine, because, frankly, he wasn't. But he was a link to a previous era of NJPW, one in which Antonio Inoki was still the man in charge, and he stuck by the company through some hard times in the mid-2000s. A winner of medals in amateur wrestling, the Young Lions Cup in 1995, G1 Climax in 1999, a 45-day appreciation reign as IWGP Heavyweight Champion in 2009, and a three-time IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team champion with three different partners (Satoshi Kojima, Takao Omori, and most famously Yuji Nagata), he was a popular enough figure with the crowds, even in this day and age. So he does deserve a decent send-off, I reckon. Hope he finds happiness in his post-wrestling life.

**Spoilers** MLW Fightland Taping
Tumblr media
MLW Fightland taping is happening Saturday night at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.Fightland will air as a one-hour Vice TV special on Thursday, October 7 at 10pm ET. As noted, not all of the matches will air on the Vice TV special.Courtesy of PWInsider, below are the spoilers:*Mads Krugger defeated Dr. Dax.*Alex Kane (with King Mo) defeated Warhorse.*Opera Cup 2021 Opening Round: Calvin Tankman defeated Matt Cross.*Opera Cup 2021 Opening Round: Bobby Fish defeated Lee Moriarty.*Opera Cup 2021 Opening Round: Davey Richards defeated Tom Lawlor.*Opera Cup 2021 Opening Round: TJP defeated Alex Shelley.*Homicide debuted as a member of 5150 as part of their wild, all over the place brawl with Los Parks.*Nicole Savoy defeated Holidead. There was some sort of injury to Savoy towards the end and she was stretchered out and taken to the back. PWInsider.com can confirm this is not a work. We can also confirm that MLW has called for an ambulance for Savoy.*Yoshihiro Tajiri won the MLW Middleweight Championship, winning a Four-Way over Arez, Aramis, and former Champion Myron Reed.*During the four-way, the ambulance arrived and Savoy was taken out of the building. We are told MLW agent Dave Prazak has gone to the hospital with Savoy. We will update as we confirm additional information.*The former Dario Cueto, now known as Cesar Duran made his way to the ring. This led to Los Parks and 5150 brawling again all over ringside as officials and Atlas Security tried to break them up.*We are told that the Savoy injury happened after a hard kick to the chest. She is currently being checked out at the hospital.*Opera Cup Semi-Final: Calvin Tankman pinned alternate Alex Kane with a bodypress off the ropes. Kane subbed for TJP. We don’t have details as to why yet. The original plan was for Tankman to defeat TJP to advance to the finals.*Catarina from Lucha Underground debuted, accompanying Mil Muertes to the ring. This debut was originally slated for last July here in Philly, but there were logistical issues that kept her from appearing. Mil Muertes’ mystery match is a Casket Match, defending the MLW Carribean Championship. His challenger was Tom Lawlor. Muertes won the bout. Lawlor was rolled off in the Casket, which had its top broken off during the bout.*Survival Elimination Match Team EJ Nduka & Savio Vega & Richard Holliday & Warhorse & Zenshi & The Blue Meanie defeated Team Ikuro Kwon & King Mo & Gino Medina & Kevin Ku & KC Navarro & The Beastman (with Kimchee).*Opera Cup Semi-Final: Davey Richards defeated Bobby Fish.It will be Calvin Tankman vs. Davey Richards in the finals, which will likely take place on 11/6 in Philadelphia.*MLW National Openweight Champion Alexander Hammerstone defeated MLW Champion Jacob Fatu in 36 minutes title vs. title match to become the ninth man to hold the MLW Championship, ending Fatu’s 819 title reign. Fatu nailed an old-school RVD Van Terminator at one point, diving across the ring with the chair in hand. Confetti rained down to mark the title change.
