National Boston Cream Pie Day
National Boston Cream Pie Day arrives on October 23. If you’ve never heard of Boston cream pie before, it’s a yellow butter cake, filled with custard or cream and topped with chocolate glaze. (Yum!) Now, we know what you’re thinking: Why is it called a pie, when it’s actually a cake?
History of National Boston Cream Pie Day
Well, when the Boston cream pie was first invented, cakes and pies were baked with the same kinds of pans, and even the words were used interchangeably. As a result, the Boston cream pie kept its old-fashioned name, in addition to its delicious flavor. It was first invented in 1856, by an Armenian-French chef named Sanzian. At the time, chocolate frosting was a fairly new idea, so the delicious dessert took the world by storm. And to this day, it remains a popular menu selection. It’s even the official dessert of Massachusetts! So get your fork at the ready—let’s eat!
Back then the dish consisted of French butter sponge cake filled with thick custard and brushed with a rum syrup. The same custard overlaid with toasted sliced almonds coated the sides, while chocolate fondant topped it all off. While other custard cakes may have existed at that time, baking chocolate as a coating was a new process, making it unique and a popular choice on the menu.
According to the website, What’s Cooking America,: “Cooks in New England and Pennsylvania Dutch regions were known for their cakes and pies and the dividing line between them was very thin. This cake was probably called a pie because in the mid-19th century, pie tins were more common than cake pans. The first versions might have been baked in pie tins. Boston Cream Pie is a remake of the early American”Pudding-cake pie.”

National Boston Cream Pie Day FAQs
Is Boston cream pie a cake?
Why, yes. It’s a yellow butter cake, filled with custard or cream and topped with chocolate glaze.
Why do we refer to Boston cream pie as pie?
This cake was probably called a pie because in the mid-19th century, pie tins were more common than cake pans. The first versions might have been baked in pie tins.
What are Boston’s other signature foods?
Clam chowder, lobster rolls, oysters, baked beans, fish and chips, and the Fenway Frank — for hungry Red Sox fans.
National Boston Cream Pie Day Activities
Bake your own: If you’re someone who loves to bake, then this is the perfect opportunity to give a delicious dessert a try. If you’re trying it for the first time, or if you’re improving on an old favorite, baking your own Boston cream pie is the perfect way to celebrate.
Throw a Boston cream party: Invite your fellow cake enthusiasts to join you in celebrating Massachusetts’ official dessert. Bring along other Boston-themed foods as well — such as clam chowder, lobster, and Sam Adams beer (if your guests are of age). And if you really want to give it that revolutionary vibe, invite your guests to party in period-style clothing!
Go to Boston: Well, what better place to get an authentic Boston cream pie than in its official birthplace? And while you’re there, check out some of the other excellent experiences that Boston has to offer.
Why We Love National Boston Cream Pie Day
It’s delicious: The recipe is so simple — you really only need three ingredients — and yet there's something about the combination of chocolate, cake, and custard that's so comforting and tasty. Not only that, but the simplicity of the ingredients gives you a lot of room to experiment. How many ways can you jazz up a Boston cream pie?
It’s got a rich history: Boston has always been a rich cultural hub. It was the site of some of the most important events in the Revolutionary War, and has continued to be the birthplace of American traditions ever since. With every bite of a Boston cream pie, you are continuing a tradition of wicked Bostonian trend-setting and innovation that's 260 years strong.
Let us eat cake: You don't really need an excuse to eat cake — but it's handy to have one sometimes. So go ahead and treat yourself.

National Bacon Day ... Who Knew?
National Bacon Day … Who Knew?
I first posted this one last year on this date, December 30th, and for much the same reason as I’m posting it this year … a lack of inspiration for my usual snarky posts! I was working on a more serious post this evening, but by the end of ‘family time’, I was feeling tired and out of sorts, so I was fairly certain there would be no a.m. post today. But then, my daily digest from the National…

Happy National Ice Cream Month! President Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month and July 15 (the third Sunday in July) National Ice Cream Day in 1984. Here are some sweet documents from our holdings. 🍦🍨
Patent file for ice cream confection known as “Eskimo Pie.” (NARA ID 1404539)
This is the January 1922 patent of the now-iconic Eskimo Pie, an ice cream bar covered in chocolate. It was invented by Christian K. Nelson and the patent was co-assigned to Russell Stover.
Good Humor Truck. (NARA ID 5916725)
Harry B. Burt created the Good Humor Bar, a chocolate-covered ice cream bar on a stick. To grow his business, he operated this Good Humor Truck that circulated until the 1970s.
“Good Humor” Ice Cream Suckers Ad (NARA ID 5916723)
This Good Humor ad served as evidence in Good Humor Corporation of America v. The Popsicle Corporation of the United States and Joe Lowe Corporation. It was generally understood that Good Humor and Popsicle were distinct products. In 1925, the companies reached a licensing agreement that stated Popsicle could make products under 4.5 percent butter fat as a form of sherbet, although that term had no official definition. When Popsicle made a “Milk Popsicle” in 1931 containing 4.48 percent butter fat, Good Humor sued. Who won the heated competition? Find out in Prologue.

If Triple Ace was an otome dating sim with a Fiestas Patrias episode. Who would you pick 🤭? #triplenacional
Cultural Notes
This little gag is based on Chile's national holidays. Let me explain what the characters are referencing
Fiestas Patrias / 18 de Septiembre / Dieciocho
Literally translated as "Patriotic Celebration", also called September 18th or just "Dieciocho" (The 18th; no matter the time of the year, if someone talks about the 18th they're talking about September). Marks the date of the First Government Body (18th) and Day of the Glories of the Army (19th). Not our independance? Well, that's in February, which is summer over here, so it was decided it would be a waste to have a holiday on a time of year where people already rest. Having our biggest holiday during winter let's us have a break we can look forward to while we work. Remember the end of year Holidays also fall in Summer here.
The actual holidays last two days, but depending on when it falls in the week, we might also get the 17th or 20th off. On top of that, celebrations don't start on the official calendar holiday but at the very start of September and going strong until the last day (be it the 19th or 20th), after which we spend the rest of the month hung-over resting from all the celebrations. If you're thinking about visiting Chile, this is, in my opinion, the best time to soak in the culture and have fun.
Fonda
A fonda is a traditional gathering done during September as a way to celebrate our culture. They take place in the open (though they often charge an entrance fee) and have different activities to pass the time: food booths (the main attraction, very meat focused), traditional games, music and dance, and rodeos (though the younger population has been calling for them to be banned since they rely on animal cruelty for entertainment).
Terremotos
An alcholic drink made with low quality white wine, grenadine and pineapple ice cream. The name literally translates to 'earthquake' because it leaves you shakey and dizzy like an earthquake (we would know ;)).
Cueca
Our national dance. Traditionally composed of pairs of men and women, though same sex pairs aren't frowned upon. It's inspired by the mating rituals of chickens.
One pie de cueca (cueca foot) is a short one minute song that follows a defined dance pattern. A complete dance is three pies de cueca.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
A sweet union of two delicate layers, with frosty bliss in between, offering delightful respite on a warm day.
The cold twin bursts of chocolate with the soft hint of vanilla between, leading to a small explosion of flavor. A delight over a century old, and even more impressive is that it is still as liked today as it was back then. The very taste of delight for untold of summers, this is the celebration of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!
Learn about National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
If you have never had an ice cream sandwich before, you are seriously missing out! This is one of the most delicious ice cream treats. It is simple to make, but it is extremely tasty. An ice cream sandwich is simply a frozen dessert that has two cookies, wafers, or biscuits, with ice cream in the middle. It combines two amazing things; ice creams and biscuits. What more could you really want? It is not hard to see why this dessert is so popular, and so it is only right that we have a day to honor this amazing treat, isn’t it?
You may be wondering where this amazing idea came from and how many people enjoy it! There are lots of great facts regarding ice cream sandwiches, so you can spend your day digging a little bit deeper into this popular treat and when it all started out. We know that there were ice cream sandwiches available for sale by street vendors in New York from the late 1800s, and so it is definitely a treat that has been enjoyed for quite some time now! We know this because the ice cream sandwich was cited in an article in the New York Mail and Express in 1899. It said the following:
There are ham sandwiches and salmon sandwiches and cheese sandwiches and several other kinds of sandwiches, but the latest is the ice-cream sandwich.
If you are a fan of the ice cream cookie sandwich, we have San Francisco to thank for this. When it comes to building a delicious ice cream sandwich, cookies have become a much-loved alternative to the standard chocolate wafer. It is believed that this creation was invented by an ice cream vendor in 1928 in San Francisco when he decided to use two oatmeal cookies instead of wafers. But wait, it gets even better, he even dipped it into chocolate before serving it! If you have never tried this type of ice cream sandwich before, why not give it a good in honor of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day? After all, everything tastes better when it has been covered in chocolate, right?
History of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
Nobody quite knows where the day originated from, or even the definitive place the ice cream sandwich itself started. There are pictures from 1900 of people eating them after paying nothing more than a penny! These delights come in many forms, but originally it was some vanilla ice cream pressed between two thin graham crackers. The current form of the ice cream sandwich is a soft chocolate wafer bracketing some vanilla ice cream. But no matter the origins, the ice cream sandwich has been a staple of summertime enjoyment for many a year. Sticky fingers and a mouth surrounded by white cream is the hallmark of many a child ‘s enjoyment, wanting another in the soft heat of summer. The mere memory of these treats seem to bring memories of summers past to mind, and the utter amazement every time we bit into one of these sandwiches of ice cream.
How to celebrate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
Well, the obvious thing would be to go get an ice cream sandwich, and enjoy it sitting down like the child we all used to be. Maybe run around a little bit, laugh loudly and ask for a second one! Maybe instead of the soft chocolate wafer, you try it as they originally made it, or maybe sandwich that luscious vanilla ice cream between two cookies. Maybe add some chocolate chips around the edge, or even try chocolate ice cream between vanilla wafers. Experiment with different things, as you never know what combination that forms your ice cream sandwich will become your new favorite.
Or maybe you could introduce someone else to an ice cream sandwich. Sharing the delightfully sweet treat with someone who has never had one might just bring a smile to your face, seeing the wonder and awe on theirs. Or even showing them what an original ice cream sandwich is. Maybe the confectionery delights that are all over, like the aforementioned chocolate chip cookies sandwiching the vanilla. In any case, enjoy the soft sweetness, and avoid that all to common mistake of eating it all so fast you end up with a brain freeze!
The good thing about making an ice cream sandwich is that it can be as straightforward or as difficult as you want it to be. If you are looking for something simple, all you need to do is purchase your favorite flavor of ice cream and your favorite biscuits. All you need to do is scoop out some ice cream and place it in between the two biscuits, and then you can enjoy. Easy and super tasty, right? However, if you are someone who likes a challenge and you want to have some fun in the kitchen, you can try making your own biscuits and your own ice cream! If you go down this route, don’t forget to post some photos on your social media so that you can show everyone your impressive creations.
