National Fresh Spinach Day
Fresh Spinach Day is celebrated annually on July 16 to emphasize the many health benefits of fresh spinach. It’s not all fantasy that Popeye gains superhuman strength after consuming his canned spinach. Because, in reality, spinach can boost your health. From improving bone health to lowering the risk of cancer, spinach got you covered. Fresh Spinach Day reminds you to add this healthy leaf vegetable to your meals or smoothies. Creamed spinach, spinach dip, sautéed spinach, green smoothie – strongly yummy.
History of Fresh Spinach Day
Spinach is said to be originating in Persia, and it was later brought to India and China via Nepal in 647 A.D. – known as ‘Persian green’ in China. Spinach was then introduced to Sicily by the Saracens in 827 A.D. It was later brought to Spain by the Arabs in the late 12th century, called ‘the chief of leafy greens.’ It then spread to England and France in the 14th century, known for a while as ‘the Spanish vegetable’ in England. In the U.S., spinach became popular in the 1800s. In the 1930s, there was a boost in spinach consumption due to the fame of Popeye.
Spinach has three main types: flat-leaf and savoy. Flat-leaf spinach or smooth-leaf spinach features flat and smooth leaves, hence the name. This type is typically grown for freezing and canning. It grows faster and yields more, and it’s easier to clean. On the other hand, the savoy type, with curly and crinkly leaves, is preferred for the use of the home garden and fresh market. It usually looks and tastes better and keeps longer than flat-leaf. Besides, it has less oxalic acid than flat-leaf. There’s also semi-savoy type spinach whose leaves are partially curly and crinkly.
Spinach is rich in nutrients, raw or cooked. If you consume raw spinach, you’ll likely absorb more folate, niacin, potassium, riboflavin, and vitamin C. Raw spinach is packed with fiber and water. And since raw spinach is quite flavorless, it’s easier to blend with sweet smoothies. When it comes to cooked spinach, you’ll likely absorb more of the iron and calcium that it provides. Besides, the amounts of vitamin A and E in cooked spinach are increased. So, whether you consume raw or cooked spinach, it will still give you the nutrients that your body needs.

Some say that spinach is best consumed raw. But, if we want it cooked, the spinach won’t lose its nutrients. So, we can make it tasty and healthy at the same time.
In case some of us forgot to incorporate spinach into our meals, Fresh Spinach Day is here to remind us. Then, we won’t miss our daily intake of this superfood.

Cass: Accidentally indulged in too much 'free time', turns out I've been reported missing for over six months and presumed dead by most local and national authorities.
-
Dylan: I have the sharpest memory here - name one time I forgot something. Sam: You forgot me in a Walmart parking lot at 2am a day ago. Dylan: I did that on purpose, try again
-
Cass: The secret of life is to always use more spinach and less rice than you think you'll need Cass: The second secret to life is that fresh air, warm sun, and a cup of tea will make your problems small enough to start handling Cass: The third secret to life is that, sometimes, violence really is the answer
-
Lily: I personally don't think it's possible to come up with a crazier plan. Elliot: We could attack them with hummus. Lily: I stand corrected. Elliot: Just keeping things in perspective.
-
Lily: You can de-escalate literally any situation by asking 'are we about to kiss?' Lily: Doesn't work with getting out of speeding tickets, though.
-
Cass, about Leo: They're covered in blood again. Why is it they're always covered in blood? Logan: Well, it looks like it's their own blood this time.
-
Kai, planning a group disguise: You cannot be Blake Bortles. Jaxon: Fine! Then I’ll be Jake- Kai, under his breath: Don’t say Jortles. Jaxon: Jortles! And I work at the molotov cocktail department.
-
Leo: Dylan, what is the ONE thing I asked you NOT to do tonight? Dylan: Raise the dead. Leo: And what did you do? Dylan: Raised the dead..
-

-
Emily: I’m going to kill Jaxon! Leo, completely monotone: Oh no. Don’t.
-
Logan: We need to distract these guys. Dylan: Leave it to me. Dylan: Centaurs have six limbs and are therefore insects. Discuss. Lily & Jaxon: *immediately begin arguing*
-
Dylan: When I first got my autism diagnosis, my first thought was "woah... it's canon" and I think that maybe thoughts like that is why Logan made me get tested.
-
Logan: People always ask me how I maintain control in my house with eight kids. The answer is: I don't. I have no control here. Jaxon called me into his room the other day and Dylan shot me in the neck with a nerf gun. Logan: I don't even know what a nerf gun is.
-
Ryan: *double checking supplies in the boat* Compass. CB radio. Sunscreen. Dylan: Hot dog costumes! Ryan: I'm sorry, what? Dylan: You know, in case we get lost at sea, and one of us, probably Elliot, goes mad with hunger, we'll put these on. Elliot hates hot dogs, so he probably won't eat us. Ryan: Are you saying that Elliot would rather eat us than hot dogs? Elliot: I do hate hot dogs.
-
Sam: What's your greatest fear? Dylan: Being forgotten. Sam: ... Sam: Damn, that's deep. Sam: Mine is the Kool Aid man, but I feel kinda stupid about it now...

"Research has revealed that frozen fruits and vegetables can have just as many vitamins -- and sometimes more -- as compared to fresh."
"Canned foods keep their nutrient content. Studies conducted show that canned fruits and vegetables keep certain nutrients, while other nutrients are increased."
Pertinent to some things I've seen on my dash the last couple days.
There are also many vegetables that are much healthier cooked than raw. These include but are far from limited to asparagus, tomatoes, things from the brassica family (broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), and spinach. Potatoes are also vegetables, and are jam-packed with vitamins and minerals.

Rating food of the countries I've been to, from West to East:
Disclaimer: it's veeery subjective
***
Spain🇪🇸 : 7/10. It's okay. I expected their fish and seafood to be better, tho. A LOT of relatively cheap fresh juices, 10/10 for health. They also make surprisingly amazing pasta and surprisingly average paella.
France🇫🇷: 9/10. Never visited cafes or restaurants there, but Carrefour has an incredible variety of good meat. I love their pineapple pie, too. There are a lot of products for vegetarians, Muslims, and, in general, different people who have different eating styles. There's a lot to see. And omg, their bazaar days are something worth attending: I still regret that I never tried clams with white wine.
UK🇬🇧 : 6/10. Not impressed. Something tells me that they deliberately make fish-n-chips that terrible. But I absolutely loved the strawberries under hot chocolate, which was sold by two cheerful Polish girls near Madam Tussaud museum.
Switzerland 🇨🇭: 6/10. Migros has nice buns with spinach and those Japanese "sandwiches", overall, your whole salary is gonna be spent on food. (Lithuania core lol😭) McDonald's there SUCKS.
Norway🇳🇴: 4/10. I expected a lot for some reason. Prices gonna cause you a heart attack, the quality is gonna give you a second heart attack. Also!!! THERE WAS NO FISH IN THE SHOPS EXCEPT THE CANNED!!! I was deeply injured. Norwegian salmon is super popular in Ukraine, how can they not have any normal fish in the big supermarkets...
Germany🇩🇪: 1/10. I may be just unlucky, but every time I visit Germany and pick a random cafe with lots of people(!), it has the worst food I've ever tasted in my life. It's like that scene from Desperate Housewives: "Really? A woman who orders Chinese food for Christmas dinner cooked a pineapple pie?" I understand now why Ukrainian women often marry Germans. My heart bleeds when I see what exactly you eat. I want to cover you with a blanket and cook you a normal soup.
Czech Republic 🇨🇿: 7/10. The soup was nice, ставлю вподобайку👍
Poland🇵🇱 : 8/10. Soup in bread, my beloved. Doughnuts were some kind of overcooked in oil, tho.
Montenegro🇲🇪: 10/10. I love you. I love your salads, your seafood, and I LOVE YOUR LEMON ICECREAM!!!!!
Slovakia🇸🇰: 7/10. I don't really remember what I ate, I am sorry. But I was really impressed with your supermarkets for some reason. Gotta visit it again.
Hungary🇭🇺: 6/10. It was my first time I've ever tried street food, and I liked it. You guys know how to cook meat.
Greece🇬🇷: 7/10. One day, I'll find the guy who can cook Karavidopsiha and beg them to cook it once again. Nice fish!!! I remember your arbutus honey as old women remember their best lovers. But. One time, a man served my family with unpeeled shrimps in batter. :/ What the hell was that? Is that some kind of a national dish I'm not aware of? Minus three points for such bullying.
Cyprus 🇨🇾: 7/10. I shouldn't be obsessed with your carob tree pastille that much.
Lithuania🇱🇹: 10/10. I love you. Although, I'd love to spend less money on food too. I love your Maxima and Rimi and Iki. I love your cafes. I love your bakery, I love your cocktails, I looooooove your soups, and I love your Asian food too. It's very easy to become an alcoholic with such delicious wines and tinctures.
Latvia🇱🇻: 11/10. Oh my god. Oh my god. I'm on my knees. Your cream chanterelle soup and Lidl croissants and marinated onion and šašlyk and fish and dairy products🛐🛐🛐. You guys know how to serve. I've never seen such pretty food designs anywhere. And of course, Lido. It brings me in tears of joy and makes me remember Puzata Hata. No, for real, is there any dish you don't know how to cook?
Finland🇫🇮: 7/10. That's okay. Nice street food.
Belarus ⚪️🔴⚪️: 9/10. Oh my dear Belarus, you're gonna be the best chef in Europe once you're free from russia. I wish I ate more machanka and drank your pine tincture when I had the chance. I love your chicory, it's a bit greyish, but it's much more delicious than an average chicory. Delicious meat in the shops. Other food is soviet-like, which makes me nauseous.
Ukraine 🇺🇦: ♾️/10. Вітчизно моя! Ти як здоров'я, наскільки ти цінна, тільки той знає, хто тебе втратив. I don't know if my favourite shops still work. I loved every single cafe I've been to, yes, even that shitty prorussian Mafia and Eurasia. I loved Puzata Hata. I loved Khlibna Kava, and its amazing cherry cupcakes. I loved Moloko Vid Fermera. I loved little kiosks with fresh Makadamia nuts and huge variety of vegetables and fruits. I loved Flagman and Silpo, Lvivśki croissants, and chocolate shops. I loved my seafood store. I loved giant frappes in Shevchenko Park. I loved my Continent with its old classical French background songs. I love my Japanese food stores. There are so many places I love. I used to find my bazaar so ugly and dirty, but I would give everything to buy the sea buckthorn jam from the cheerful old lady. But it's not gonna happen. My bazaar was shelled by russians to the ground.
Turkey🇹🇷: 9/10. Your Katmer, seafood soup and baked shrimps(?) are something 🛐.
Jordan🇯🇴: 7/10. Nice! You cook paella better than Spain, be proud of yourself. Although, I'd love to not be scared for my life as a woman all the time. Your bazaar seemed very interesting, but unfortunately, I don't speak Arabic. And I am a woman, which also sucks, I guess. I was totally covered in black, except for the face and hair, and people still stared at me like on a zoo exponate. McDonald's kinda sucks too, but not as much as in Switzerland.
Egypt🇪🇬: 7/10. It's okay. I've tasted only hotel food.
Sakartvelo🇬🇪 : 10/10. Our guide forgot about our existence, and we had to find any source of food to not die from hunger, so we went to your local bazaar and asked to fry some cheap fish. It had lots of bones, and I hate fish with bones, but I ate it all, and it tasted amazing.
Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦: 6/10. Most of the week, I just cooked some simple spiceless products like pasta and eggs from the small store. You are far from the level of grocery stores in Turkey. Although, your cold orange juice bottle saved my life from dying in the middle of the desert.
Qazaqstan 🇰🇿: 7/10. I don't really remember your supermarkets, I guess they were okay. But your bazaars are definitely something worth attending. Millions of varieties of honey with millions of tastes and very salty hard cheese Kurt.

NEW YORK — Is a hot dog something that belongs in a salad? From marshmallows to meatballs — a new survey is revealing some of the strange ways Americans “jazz up” their greens each day.
The poll of 2,000 adults revealed plenty of strange ingredients many people add to an ordinary salad to give it more taste — including banana, peanut butter, peppermint, and popcorn! Aside from the occasional topping oddity, most people gravitate towards the classics for their salads. The most popular toppings were still cheese (42%), tomatoes (37%), bacon (30%), croutons (28%), and cucumbers (27%).
Also, the best salad dressings are Ranch (50%), Italian (30%), and Caesar (25%). However, for 61 percent, the real “main character” of their salad story are still the greens. The best of the pack were romaine (46%), iceberg (44%), spinach (32%), spring mix (30%), and crunchy green lettuce (26%).
Commissioned by BrightFarms and conducted by OnePoll in celebration of National Salad Month, the study also found salads are most enticing depending on their dressing (56%), quality of lettuce (42%), toppings (40%), and the harmony of different flavors (20%). Over half (57%) said the level of freshness was the biggest factor in how appetizing a salad is. In fact, 78 percent refuse to eat a salad when the vegetables turn soggy

drinking a smoothie i made
I had a smoothie today too! What’s in your smoothie? Mine had spinach, water, protein mix, an apple, banana and mixed berries
that sounds great 🤤 i made the watermelon mojito smoothie from tropical smoothie cafe. i did a whole post before with the recipe but tumblr’s search feature won’t allow me to find it again lmao i didn’t measure this time, but it’s frozen strawberries, watermelon, fresh mint and a tablespoon of sweetened lime juice. i drink at least 5 of these a week.. ever since i ordered one and had to find a former employee to give me the recipe about two years ago, the obsession has been real
in honor of national smoothie day, which is today, here’s the official recipe again 🍉 🍓 i don’t defrost the strawberries, add water and ice, or sugar. if you add more watermelon to thin it out it’s more than sweet enough and super flavorful, but that’s my personal preference.

大家好! For my weekly simple breakfast out of compassion for starving Palestinians in Gaza, I tried truffle carbonara flavoured kuai shu mian (instant noodles). Again, I added more water to thin out the sauce. For the price, this was quite tasty, although the truffle fragrance was pretty faint. The noodles were QQ and slurpable, a must for me. This will pair well with smoked salmon if I buy more in future, or I can pour in canned diced tomatoes to make the sauce more flavourful. Overall, not bad; it's something I'll eat again after I've tried other brands.

Near the coffee shop where I sometimes have WFH lunch is a hawker centre housing various food stalls. One of them specialises in Chinese spinach soup and it was awarded the Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand in 2023. I decided to try their Chinese spinach noodle soup with sliced fish. The large bowl contained thick slices of tender fresh fish, dried shiitake mushroom, goji berries, crisp spinach, sliced ginger, minced pork and highly slurpable noodles. I especially liked the steaming hot, slightly cloudy, robust and flavourful broth. Yum, this meal was both nutritious and delicious! They fully deserved their award. Will definitely return to try their other dishes.

FL, an old friend of 15 years, and I finally met for the first time since covid. Over a delicious mala lunch, we brought each other up to speed with our lives. When he shared the photo of us in our group chat with other mutual friends, they asked why I met him and not them! 😅 It's just easier to coordinate schedules with 1 person vs a group with several people, but yeah, it's about time all of us gather again, just like the good old days. FL and I shared a bowl of fish, chicken, pork skin, meatballs, cabbage, mushrooms and noodles. My goodness it was SO yummy! The food stall is quite out of the way, so I hope to return when I catch up with friends who live or work near that area. It is 1 out of 9 stalls owned by Antho's wife, so I'm happy to support it when I can.
Meanwhile, I can count on our vibrant hawker culture for tasty, moderately healthy meals. From yong tau foo soups boasting a whopping 8 varieties of vegetables - golden and shiitake mushrooms, Chinese spinach, Napa cabbage, broccoli, carrot, radish and okra along with tau kwa (firm tofu) and a hardboiled egg - to cai fan salad comprising bittergourd, Chinese spinach and celery with cabbage and enoki mushrooms as well as steamed egg, these colourful meals are visually appealing on their own, no artsy fartsy plating required. And that's without mentioning what nutrition bombs these meals are!
Over 37,500 Palestinians have been killed and close to 86,000 wounded as the genocidal war in Gaza continues. Much of the war-torn strip is in ruins, the land uninhabitable. Infrastructure such as schools, places of religious workship and hospitals have been destroyed. Meanwhile, survivors are still at risk of dying from starvation and malnutrition. Even as I continue to have my weekly simple breakfasts out of compassion for Palestinians in Gaza, I also pray for the parties which continue to arm Israel to face the wrath of God. May retribution come soon for these evil beings. 下次见!

Birds Eye pioneered in advertising it
Raw spinach is 91% water, so it’s good for hydration.

China is the country with the world’s highest production of spinach, around 92% of the world’s production.
California accounts for almost 75% of the U.S.’s production of spinach.

Why We Love Fresh Spinach Day
It’s healthy
It’s versatile
It’s a reminder
Spinach still provides benefits whether we consume it raw or cooked. We can combine it with other vegetables or fruits if we want a salad. We can also add it to a strawberry smoothie, for example. And the spinach won’t have much effect on the taste of the strawberry.

Street food in Bhutan offers an authentic taste of the country's culinary heritage, blending spices, herbs, and fresh ingredients to create dishes that are both flavorful and nourishing. For travelers, indulging in Bhutanese street food is an essential part of the experience. Here's a guide to the top 10 mouthwatering street food dishes you must try on your visit to Bhutan. Whenever you think of trying Bhutanese cuisine, you cannot miss this iconic mouthwatering delicacy.
1. Ema Datshi
Ema Datshi is often considered the national dish of Bhutan. It is a spicy stew made with chili peppers and cheese, usually served with rice. The word "Ema" means chili, and "Datshi" means cheese in Dzongkha, Bhutan's official language. This dish can vary in spiciness, but it is always bursting with flavor. It is typically prepared with green chili peppers, but variations using red chilies or other types of peppers are also common. The creamy texture of the cheese balances the heat from the chilies, creating a harmonious and satisfying dish.
2. Shakam Paa
Shakam Paa is a popular Bhutanese dish made with dried beef, which is a staple in the high-altitude regions of the country. The beef is first dried and then cooked with dried chilies, garlic, and sometimes radish. This dish is known for its rich, intense flavors and chewy texture. It is often enjoyed with red rice, which is a unique variety of rice grown in the fertile valleys of Bhutan. Shakam Paa provides a hearty and protein-packed meal, perfect for the cooler climates of Bhutan.
3. Momos
Momos are a beloved street food in Bhutan, much like in neighboring Tibet and Nepal. These dumplings are typically filled with minced meat (beef, chicken, or pork) or vegetables and cheese. They are then steamed or fried to perfection. Momos are often served with a spicy dipping sauce made from tomatoes, garlic, and chilies. They are a favorite snack or light meal for both locals and tourists, offering a delicious and convenient way to enjoy the flavors of Bhutanese cuisine.
4. Phaksha Paa
Phaksha Paa is a pork dish that is widely enjoyed across Bhutan. It features slices of pork cooked with red chilies, radish, and other vegetables. Sometimes, mountain vegetables like spinach or turnips are added to enhance the flavor and nutritional value. The dish is seasoned with garlic, ginger, and fermented yak cheese, giving it a distinctive taste. Phaksha Paa is typically served with rice, making it a satisfying and hearty meal that showcases the robust flavors of Bhutanese cooking.
5. Jasha Maru
Jasha Maru is a spicy chicken stew that is another staple in Bhutanese cuisine. It is made with diced chicken, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, and chilies. The dish is often served with a generous portion of rice. The combination of tender chicken and the spicy, tangy sauce makes Jasha Maru a favorite among those who enjoy bold flavors. It is a perfect dish for warming up on a chilly day and offers a glimpse into the culinary traditions of Bhutan.
6. Goep
For the adventurous foodie, Goep (tripe) is a must-try dish in Bhutan. It is prepared by frying or stewing the tripe with chilies, onions, and tomatoes. The dish is seasoned with garlic and ginger to enhance its flavor. While the texture of tripe can be challenging for some, Goep is highly regarded in Bhutan for its rich taste and nutritional benefits. It is often served as part of a larger meal, accompanied by rice and other side dishes.
7. Kewa Datshi
Kewa Datshi is another cheese-based dish, but this time featuring potatoes as the main ingredient. Slices of potatoes are cooked with green chilies and cheese, creating a comforting and creamy dish. Kewa Datshi is less spicy compared to Ema Datshi, making it a great option for those who prefer milder flavors. The natural sweetness of the potatoes pairs beautifully with the rich cheese, resulting in a dish that is both satisfying and delicious.
8. Shamu Datshi
Shamu Datshi is a mushroom and cheese stew that showcases the earthy flavors of mushrooms combined with the creamy texture of Bhutanese cheese. This dish is often enjoyed during the mushroom season when fresh, wild mushrooms are plentiful. Shamu Datshi is usually served with rice and can be found in many street food stalls and local eateries. It is a favorite among vegetarians and anyone who loves the rich, savory taste of mushrooms.
9. Hoentay
Hoentay are traditional Bhutanese dumplings that originate from the Haa Valley. They are similar to momos but are made with a buckwheat dough and typically filled with a mixture of spinach, cheese, and turnip greens. These dumplings are usually steamed and are known for their hearty and wholesome flavor. Hoentay are often enjoyed with a side of ezay (a spicy Bhutanese chili sauce), adding a kick to this nutritious and delicious snack.
10. Sel Roti
Sel Roti is a sweet, ring-shaped rice bread that is popular in Bhutan as well as Nepal. It is made from a batter of rice flour, milk, sugar, and butter, which is deep-fried until golden brown. CANCER:
Cancer is such a staggering epidemic, the sheer number of people affected by the disease is heart-breaking. Cancer is killing over 11 million people per year, approximately 30,000 people die every day from cancer. It is MASS GENOCIDE!
Christ’s promise:
The River of Life
Rev 22:1 And he shewed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Rev 22:2 In the midst of the street thereof, and on both sides of the river, was the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, yielding its fruits every month: the leaves of the tree for the healing of the nations.
The Clergy of the Christ Lord RayEl, will be issuing the Leaves of healing to those whom are worthy of His New Kingdom.
We won’t go into the numerous causes of the cancer epidemic, but we will provide some help in the meantime:
DRY FAST - from three to four days, this will kick start your body into the cleansing and self-healing process.
Stop feeding the cancer - no refined sugars. Supermarket pre-packed foods, tinned foods and fast foods are usually full of preservatives and refined sugars, cancer loves these.
Eat and drink real food - natural and organic. Fresh fruits and vegetables from farms that do not use chemicals. Limit your meat intake, include fresh fish in your diet. Avoid manufactured or processed meats.
Exercise daily - release natural human growth hormones. Join a gymnasium, water aerobics class, ride a bicycle, walk. Get off your lounge chair and start living. Cancer hates HGH. Massage and Bowen therapy could help in detoxifying your body.
Detoxify your environment - remove other triggers. Remove harsh chemical cleaners, poisons and sprays from your home, use natural alternatives, especially for personal hygiene items.
Power of positive thinking - break the negativity cycle. You can beat this cancer. Seek a mentor - talk to others who have beaten cancer. Enjoy life and have a laugh, release your natural endorphins. Prayer is powerful, seek the Heavenly Father, be grateful.
Avoid unnecessary vaccinations, antibiotics - immune ruiners, try natural immune boosters.
Skin Cancers: The famous Australian long distance runner, Cliff Young, used the milk/sap from common 'chick/radium weed' to successfully treat his skin cancers; pharmaceutical companies have now marketed this in a topical cream.
Top 12 Foods and Drinks for Cancer Prevention:
In terms of the relationship between diet and cancer, this leads us to lists of what not to eat (fast foods, sigh), as well as the other side of the coin: What we should eat and drink (red wine, yay!).
Consider the importance of eating specific foods and drinks for cancer protection. Here’s what we suggest:
1. Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale. These score high for containing many anti-cancer substances, such as isothiocyanates.
2. Artichokes: for very high levels of salvestrols.
3. Dark greens: such as spinach and romaine lettuce, for their fibre, folate and a wide range of cancer-fighting carotenoids. Other dark coloured veggies, too, such as beets and red cabbage.
4. Grapes and red wine: especially for the resveratrol.
5. Legumes: beans, peas and lentils, for the saponins, protease inhibitors and more.
6. Seeds: Flaxseed, especially if you grind it yourself and consume when fresh, for the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid, lignans and other “good fats.”
7. Berries: particularly blueberries, for the ellagic acid and anthocyanosides.
