Ritchie Valens - La Bamba 1958

"La Bamba" is a Mexican folk song, originally from the state of Veracruz, also known as "La Bomba". The song is best known from a 1958 adaptation by rock and roll pioneer and forefather of the Chicano rock movement Ritchie Valens, which became a Top 40 hit on the US charts. Valens's version is ranked number 345 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. "La Bamba" has been covered by numerous artists, notably by Los Lobos whose version was the title track of the 1987 film La Bamba, a bio-pic about Valens; their version reached number 1 on many charts in the same year. Their music video won the 1988 MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film.

"La Bamba" is a classic example of the son jarocho musical style, which originated in the Mexican state of Veracruz, and combines Spanish, indigenous, and African musical elements. "La Bamba" likely originated in the last years of the 17th century. The oldest known historical references come from the town of Alvarado, Mexico, where it apparently was performed with an atypically lively rhythm. The oldest recorded version known is that of Alvaro Hernández Ortiz, who recorded the song with the name of "El Jarocho". His recording was released by Victor Records in Mexico in 1938 or 1939, and was reissued on a 1997 compilation by Yazoo Records, The Secret Museum of Mankind Vol. 4.

Ritchie Valens learned the song in his youth. In 1958 he recorded a rock and roll flavored version of "La Bamba", originally released as the B-side of his number-two hit "Donna". His recording of the song was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. On February 3, 1959, on what has become known as "The Day the Music Died", Valens died in a plane crash in Iowa, an accident that also claimed the lives of fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as their pilot. Valens was 17 years old at the time of his death. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame, the California Hall of Fame, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2018, his version of "La Bamba" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Now, my singer career:

ᝰ. My mom is a country singer — not much known — in Texas, so I’ve grew up loving music, and I’ve been writing songs since I was 15, but these never turned into real songs, until 2019-2020, when I recorded my EP’s.

ᝰ. My first EP is called “Minor” and it has 7 songs. I released it in 2019 just for fun, was some songs that I’ve been writing during the years. In 2020 I released more 2 EPs, called “Bittersweet” and “Good Riddance”, with 7 and 10 songs respectively, again, just for fun.

ᝰ. Now, my new coming up project on music is my first Album, called “The Secret Of Us”, it has 13 songs (+ 7 from deluxe) and all of them will have a music video, cause my objective is making a visual album.

ᝰ. With my new album, I intend to go on my first tour.

Fun facts about me:

ᝰ. I know ballet and gymnastics cause when my sister was 8 years old she wanted to learn but was scared to do it alone, so I used to go to classes with her.

ᝰ. I have 3 siblings, Will, Kayla and Austin. Will is 2 years older than me, Kayla is younger than me 4 years and Austin is 8 years younger than me. (Another fun fact is that Austin is adopted).

ᝰ. My s/o is Drew Starkey, I met him in a party at Maddie Cline’s house (2021). Also, Madelyn is my best friend and I’m very close to the cast of the outer banks too.

ᝰ. I’m in fact brazilian. I was born there but my family moved to the US when I was 8 — my father is brazilian but my mom is from us, she was in a trip when met my dad in brazil and blablabla — so I have dual nationality. (latinas are better lol). But when I was 14, I moved again to Brazil and lived there for almost 2 years with my aunt before I came back to US.

ᝰ. When I was 16, I made a YouTube channel with my brother Will and we used to talk about the most random things ever (btw it was a flop lol, this channel just came up when we became famous). (another fun fact is that he is also a well known actor, but more on theater plays than on screen).

When I was in high school, I was planning on going to med school — mostly because of my dad, he’s a doctor (my obsession with greys anatomy might got me inclined to that too🤭) — but then I fell in love with acting (when I was 16, like i said) and never quit. Besides that, I’m still very interested with things related to science and human body, stuff like that; most of things that I know are bc of my dad tho.

ᝰ. I’m polyglot. I speak Portuguese, English, Italian, Spanish and a bit of French and Latin. I also know ASL.

ᝰ. I still don’t know how to ride bikes without training wheels cause no one ever taught me (😭).

ᝰ. I love the sea, beaches, everything related to that, it’s one of my favorite places in the world.

Acting legend Dame Joan Plowright dies at 95

Joan Plowright was made a dame in 2004

Dame Joan Plowright, one of Britain's most celebrated stage and screen stars and the widow of Sir Laurence Olivier, has died at the age of 95.

Her career spanned 60 years and included an Oscar nomination for the 1991 film Enchanted April.

She married Olivier in 1961 after starring opposite him as his daughter in The Entertainer, and became a leading member of the National Theatre, which he set up.

In a statement, her family said they were "so proud of all Joan did and who she was as a loving and deeply inclusive human being".

Her family said: "It is with great sadness that the family of Dame Joan Plowright, the Lady Olivier, inform you that she passed away peacefully on January 16 2025 surrounded by her family at Denville Hall aged 95.

"She enjoyed a long and illustrious career across theatre, film and TV over seven decades until blindness made her retire.

"She cherished her last 10 years in Sussex with constant visits from friends and family, filled with much laughter and fond memories."

They added: "She survived her many challenges with Plowright grit and courageous determination to make the best of them, and that she certainly did.

"Rest in peace, Joan..."

She had been retired for a decade, having lost her eyesight and been registered blind.

Born in Scunthorpe, Plowright became a leading lady in London's West End in the 1950s, and first appeared opposite Olivier in John Osborne's The Entertainer at the Royal Court in 1957.

He was still married to Gone With The Wind star Vivien Leigh at the time, and Plowright was married to her first husband Roger Gage.

Plowright and Olivier fell in love, and their acting partnership earned them both Bafta nominations for the film version of The Entertainer, which came out in 1960.

That year, Plowright also made her breakthrough in the US in A Taste of Honey on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for her performance.

Her other notable plays included George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan, about Joan of Arc, in 1963, which for which she was named best actress at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

And she won a Society of West End Theatre Award - later renamed the Olivier Awards after her husband - in 1978 for Filumena.

She received another Bafta nomination that same year for her performance in the film version of Equus alongside Richard Burton.

In Enchanted April, her role as the elegant but peevish Mrs Fisher earned her a Golden Globe as well as a nomination for the Oscar for best supporting actress in 1993.

Nothing Like A Dame

Dame Joan was one of a generation of great acting dames, and appeared opposite Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith in the 1999 film Tea with Mussolini.

More recently, she was famously seen reminiscing and enjoying repartee with Dame Judi, Dame Maggie and Dame Eileen Atkins in the 2018 BBC documentary Nothing Like A Dame.

In a clip from the show, which went viral online, a slightly disgruntled Dame Maggie is seen telling Dame Judi she was "always asked first" when acting roles were offered.

The exchange was initially missed by Dame Joan because one of her hearing aids had fallen out, but she then joined in the joke, also recounting a similar story. She was then offered a spare hearing aid by the late Dame Maggie, who died in September 2024.

West End theatres will dim their lights for two minutes in tribute to Dame Joan on Tuesday.

UK Theatre and Society Of London Theatre co-chief executive Hannah Essex said: "Dame Joan Plowright was an iconic and deeply respected figure in the world of theatre, leaving an indelible mark on the industry she shaped with her talent and dedication.

"We are honoured to contribute to the celebration of her extraordinary career and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones."

From what I can find, this is the first that anyone knows she is producing a film. There are no details released other than it's a script she wrote and she will be directing the film.

The next we hear is Dec 7, 2023 from the Tennessean --

It's been crickets, essentially. There are no public details I can find about the film anywhere including cast list, release date, content, ETC.

Interestingly, two days ago -- though uncertain of validity of source -

I don't have access to puck so cannot confirm what the article says; but this was recent! So; in theory, she finishes her Eras tour and moves directly in to film.

20th century fox, prior to the creation of Searchlight, was prominent in the specialty and independent films market in the 1990s; it carried this interest into Searchlight, at least initially.

In 2012, it was incorporated into Murdoch's 21st Century Fox. Barf.

On Dec 14, 2017 Disney put their first bid out on 21st Century Fox/Fox Searchlight. On March 19, 2019 the companies merged and Disney acquired Fox Searchlight; Fox News notoriously split independently. Disney dropped the name Fox; so now we have just Searchlight Pictures. There is also a Searchlight Pictures TV and shorts production, which for the sake of time I will not get into.

For Funsies, here is a short film (Jun 18 2019, after Disney acquired) produced by them called....LAVENDER. About a gay man who has a relationship with a married gay couple. Can't make it up.

Anyway, since merging with Disney especially, the company seems to be LGBTQ friendly.

Most of her directorial work has been since the Lover debut. Most of which is very queer coded/sapphic.. and again, make of that what you will.

Since her split from JA, we have seen her with multiple friends in the film industry. Among these: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Keleigh Teller, Miles Teller, Sophie Turner, Emma Stone...

The Speculation

Yall, this is my opinion - you can agree, disagree, etc; but I have no insider information. Just thoughts.

She makes her film directorial debut with Searchlight - recently acquired by Disney, who is pro-LGBTQ; and is clearly in deep with business deals with them, as seen on Taylor Nation and her Eras Tour Film.

We have rumors of her beginning her film production at the end of the ERAS tour, along with knowledge of her currently with B roll footage from chiefs games. We have multiple highly papp'ed appearances with her + TK; but also with multiple film stars, including Blake Lively (still not over that photo), Sophie Turner (I do think there's altruism here tbh on TS's end), and Keleigh. If you believe Keleigh is her stand in invisible bride.... Holy shit. Between the opal ring shutdown of the media circus as well as her and TS literally taking a page out of TSHOEH and dressing in character...

My ultimate suspicion is that she's using actual experiences of her current life-highly papp'ed - to tell her story. And that Keleigh is her stand in muse in this film.

I also think the @spade-riddles we've been getting about a final act ending, etc, pertain to her film. I don't have evidence aside from speculation.

10 Cool Jewish Women from Modern Day! Part 2 because I'm on a role

Liz Kleinrock, a self-described "Korean, Jewish, queer, transracial adoptee, antibias and antiracist nationally recognized educator, author, and consultant." Born in Korea, she was adopted by an Ashkenazi Jewish family in Washington D.C.. Involved in education, with a Masters in UCLA's Teacher Education Program, she has taught in California and D.C., and has also worked as a school librarian. In 2018, she received Learning for Justice's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Loolwa Khazzoom, an Iraqi-American writer, journalist, activist, musician, and feminist. She was heavily involved in the Jewish feminist movement of the 1990s and is the founder of the Jewish Multicultural Project, which provides resources to Jewish communities about diversity in Jewish culture. She has also been involved in SOJIAC and JIMENA. Raised in California to an American Jewish mother and an Iraqi Jewish father, she graduated from Barnard College in 1991. She participated in a filming about the interplay of race and gender in America called The Way Home. Named as a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences in 2016, she is also a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and System Engineers and the International Council on Systems Engineering.

Ayelet Newman, also known as Ayelet the Kosher Comic, is an Orthodox stand up comedian. Born to a secular Jewish family on long Island, she pursued a career in TV and film after high school, appearing in The Hebrew Hammer. She became a baalat teshuva in the early 2000s, when she quit acting and began pursuing comedy, performing only for women.

Adina Sash, a Brooklyn raised American Jewish activist and social media influencer, also known as FlatbushGirl. Holding a Master's degree in Medieval literature from Brooklyn College, her online activism was started after receiving sexist comments. In 2017,s he launched a social media campaign called #FrumWomenHaveFaces that raised awareness of the erasing of women from Orthodox newspapers and magazine, gaining the support of Mayim Bialik (Jewish actress).

Tova Ben-Dov, former president of the Women's International Zionist Organization and former vice president of the World Jewish Congress, as well as a board member for the Jewish Agency for Israel and the International Alliance of Women. She joined WIZO as a young mother, and worked in the Chair of Women's Training Department of WIZO Israel. In 2011, she was awarded Honoree of Tel Aviv, and in 2016 the title of Honorary Fellow of the World Zionist Congress.

Kat Graham, an American actress, singer, dancer, author, and activist. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, to an Americo-Liberian father and a Polish and Russian Jewish mother. Co-founder of he wellness company Modern Nirvana, she had released work focusing on self-help. She speaks English, French, Spanish, and some Hebrew and Portuguese. She is known for her role as Bonnie Bennett on the CW show The Vampire Diaries, and has released two extended plays and four studio albums. She has done work as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency, inspired by her family's history.

Dafna Bar-Sagi, an Israeli born cell biologist and cancer researcher at New York University School of Medicine. She is member of the scientific advisory boards, including the National Cancer Institute. A graduate of Bar-Ilan, where she earned her undergraduate and master's in neurobiology, she received her PhD in neurobiology from the State University of New York as Stony Brook. Her research focuses on the nature of he Ras oncogene and how Ras signaling leads to tumor development. She has been the vice dean for science, chief scientific officer, and executive vice president of NYU Langone Health.

Malika Kalontarova, a Tajikistan born Bukharian dancer known as the "Queen of Tajik and Oriental Dance." Rebellious as a child, she has always identified as Jewish, despite Antisemitism in Tajikstan. Trained by Ghaffor Valamatzoda and Remziye Tarsinova, she moved to Queens in 1993 where she opened up her own dance studio.

Jazz Jennings, an American spokeswoman and Queer activist. An honorary co-founder of he TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation, which her parents founded in 2007, she is one of the youngest documented people to be recorded as transgender. She was accepted into and currently attends Harvard University. In 2013, at only 13 years old, she founded Purple Rainbow Tails, while engaging in a battle with the USSF to allow her to play on a girls' soccer team. She is a published author, and in 2014 was named one of the top 25 most influential teens. She has voiced several characters in an animated shows, and starred in an Amazon Prime movie.

Sex Workers' Struggles

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, born in Chicago in 1940

When I first heard Miss Major Griffin-Gracy speak, on a panel of elders at the National LGBTQ Task Force's Creating Change Conference in 2018, her poise and charisma were incredible. It wouldn't be wouldn't be hyperbole to say she stole thr- show. In a wheelchair and flanked by "her girls," she made quite an entrance a few minutes after the panel had officially begun. When Louis and I went to sit down with her for the interview and photo shoot, we had to wait our turn. She was surrounded by peo- ple who just wanted to have a moment with her, sneak in a hug, offer thanks. She was literally awash in love. A Stonewall veteran, world-renowned civil rights advocate, revolution ary social justice luminary, and legendary elder, Miss Major is a leader in the fight for trans justice. Generations of trans women from all over the U.S. call her Mama. She has a refreshing message of resilience and revolution.

Miss Major grew up in Chicago, has lived in New York and San Francisco, and now resides in Little Rock, Arkan- sas. She became politicized in the Clinton Correctional Facility, a maximum-security state prison for men located in Dannemora, New York, just after the 1971 Attica prison uprising. For years she has been an advocate for transand her perspe women in prison, and she recently retired from her posi- tion as the executive director of the Transgender Gender- Variant and Intersex Justice Project, which focuses on disproportionate incarceration of transgender people. She is now working on a new project in Little Rock, the Griffin- Gracy Educational Retreat and Historical Center, or, as she likes to call it, The House of GGs, which their website describes as a "safe and transformative space where mem- bers of the community can heal-physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually-from the trauma arising from generations of transphobia, racism, sexism, poverty, ableism and violence, and nurture them into tomorrow's leaders." The website also identifies the primary focus as "support- ing and nurturing the leadership of Transgender women of color living in the U.S. South." For the community, she identifies as a Black elder transgender woman, but she told me, with a laugh, "To myself and my sons and people who are intimately close to me, I consider myself a man with titties." (She said she always loved them wanted a pair. for myself.") Miss Major affectionately refers to the trans women she works with as her "girls" or "gurls" in a gentle, kind, and respectful way. She loves color and flair-and big entrances. She drives a 1960 Cadillac convertible with a license plate reading TSCUGR, "trans cougar." She is also the subject of an award-winning documentary feature film, MAJOR! by Annalise Ophelian and StormMiguel Florez. As a sex worker in 1969, Miss Major arrived at the Stone- wall at the end of a night of work to check on the safety of her girls. She was there the night of the uprising and has a rarely heard story to tell. She is one of the few remaining survivors of Stonewall, and her perspective on the uprising has too often been ignored.

I rewatched The Social Network for its 13th anniversary. One of my favorite films of all time, and one that convinced me of Armie's extraordinary acting skills. The film is a masterpiece on every level, one of the greatest biopics of the 21st century. In my opinion also David Fincher's magnum opus, together with Se7en, if one could have more than 1. With an inimitable performance of the KILLER soundtrack.

And Armie Hammer was in it!!!

A few review quotes about Armie's performance:

* Hammer and Garfield make the glue that hold it together.

* Although the stand out award I'd like to give to Mr. Armie Hammer. His role is just Tailor fit, literally as his jacket. From his statuesque as a rower all through out as a dapper at Harvard, he is just believable in that field. He is after after all the Winklevoss BrotherS.

* Armie hammer is a best combination of grace and conceit how he played wealthy twins.

* David Fincher's cool, stylish direction and great performances by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Armie Hammer make The Social Network a worthwhile watch.

* Now that some of the dust has settled, there’s one name that keeps coming up as a comic scene-stealer and awards dark horse: Armie Hammer, who plays entitled twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. In the movie, a Winklevoss twin declares, “I’m six-foot-five, 220 pounds, and there’s two of me,” but since there’s only one of Hammer, that meant the actor was often acting opposite a body double whose face he’d be digitally grafted onto in postproduction (and when you consider the notorious amount of takes that an exacting director like David Fincher requires, Hammer’s nimble pair of performances is all the more impressive). 

* My favorite description of the twins in the film comes from Alison Willmore's review, in which she writes, "Hammer is infinitely amusing in his dual role, exuding privilege and looking like something grown in a vat of J. Crew catalogs and Aryan race propaganda."

* No one could have played Sean Parker like Justin Timberlake, and Armie Hammer playing the Winklevoss twins is fantastic too.

* The quasi-pair of performances generated Hammer Oscar buzz at the time, and he has been a marquee mainstay ever since, appearing in films like J. Edgar (2011), The Lone Ranger (2013), The Birth of a Nation (2016), Call Me By Your Name (2017), Cars 3 (2017), Sorry to Bother You (2018), and On the Basis of Sex (2018).

* What makes Armie Hammer’s  acting performance outstanding is his use of specific body language with each of the two characters.

The different  way he moves, his vocal cadences , and facial expressions makes it so easy to believe that these were two different people on the screen. 

When Armie played Cameron Winklevoss, he played him more uptight and more formal. The formality also came out  in his dialogue. His diction was more precise.

When he played Tyler  Winklevoss,  he leaned back and was more laid back. His speech pattern was more fluid and he even used curse words as Tyler’s character.

I think that Armie’s performance was so great that I would easily see him being a contender for best supporting actor at the next Academy Awards ceremony.

Michael Sheen narrates our brand-new show for The Snowman Tour

We are thrilled to announce that Michael Sheen has recorded the narration of The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle for us, ready for its world premiere on The Snowman Tour, 2024.

Our Managing Director, Rachel Whibley, explains, "It’s been a joy collaborating with award-winning author-illustrator David Litchfield, award-winning composer (and Carrot Productions' very own Artistic Director) Daniel Whibley, and animator Kevin Francis to bring The Bear, the Piano, the Dog, and the Fiddle to life for our audiences.”

Michael recorded the narration last week in a London studio, and we are delighted to be able to share a sneak preview of his beautiful narration alongside the animation and music.

Michael Sheen

Michael is a multi-award-winning Welsh actor and RADA graduate known for his extensive work across film, TV and stage, as well as his charity work. His vast film credits include The Damned United, David Frost in Frost/Nixon, Tony Blair in The Queen, Lucian in the Underworld series, Aro in The Twilight Saga, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, and Apostle.

Michael’s numerous TV credits include The Special Relationship, Masters of Sex, for which he was also a producer, Good Omens, Prodigal Son, Quiz, and Staged - the hit lockdown comedy co-created with David Tennant. Sheen's acclaimed stage performances include Amadeus, Caligula, and Hamlet. Recently, he made his directorial debut with The Way and played Prince Andrew in A Very Royal Scandal. He created, co-directed, and performed in the ground-breaking three-day live event The Passion in Port Talbot for National Theatre Wales.

The Bear and the Piano - the book trilogy

The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle, published in 2018, is the second book in the trilogy created by the multi-award winning illustrator and author, David Litchfield. The original book,The Bear and the Piano, took the world by storm in 2016, winning numerous awards, including Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for the Best Illustrated Book of the year. The final book, The Bear, the Piano, and Little Bear’s Concert published in 2020, sees Bear’s international concert days behind him; now a father, his musical adventures continue closer to home. 

The Bear, the Piano, the Dog and the Fiddle - the story

Set in New Orleans with a new cast of animal musicians, this charming sequel is a story about friendship and perseverance. Hector, a fiddle player, and his dog, Hugo, are best friends. They have made music together through good times, bad times and even some crazy times. Hugo is Hector's biggest fan, and when Hector retires, Hugo secretly learns to play the fiddle himself. But when Hugo gets the chance to play and tour with Bear’s Big Band – an opportunity that Hector had always dreamed of – Hector’s jealousy gets the better of him. Will Hector be able to overcome his own disappointment and learn to be happy for his friend?

This heartfelt tale reminds us that there are many different kinds of success. It celebrates the joy and healing powers of music and friendship, and teaches that friendship, like good music, lasts forever.

David Litchfield - the author and illustrator

David is a multi-award winning illustrator and author. David first started to draw when he was very young, creating Star Wars and Indiana Jones ‘mash up’ comics for his older brother and sister. Since then his work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, books and on T-shirts. He has also exhibited his illustrations in both solo and group shows in the U.K, Europe and America. In addition to The Bear and the Piano trilogy, David’s author/illustrator picture books include Grandad’s Secret Giant, Lights On Cotton Rock, T, and Kid Christmas: Of The Claus Brothers Toyshop. David has illustrated books for authors Ross Montgomery, Gregory Maguire, David Almond and Smriti Halls; Miss Muffet, Or What Came After for Marilyn Singer and book covers for Kate Dicamillo, Neil Patrick Harris, Chloe Daykin and many more. David lives with his family in Bedfordshire, England.

Daniel Whibley - the composer

Daniel is a composer and arranger whose music is heard live each year by thousands of people across the world, featured on TV and all BBC Radio stations. He was commissioned by Aardman to produce orchestral arrangements for all four Wallace & Gromit films and additional material for Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep in Concert. He wrote music for the 2023 CBeebies Prom and Mr Tumble’s Special Adventure with the BBC Philharmonic. His Musical Story of the Gingerbread Man has had millions of views, and his 10-part CBeebies series, Musical Storyland, was recently nominated for a Royal Television Society award.

FEATURE: Alamat, Handa ‘Rap!: Kulturang Pilipino sa mga Kanta ng ALAMAT

Simula 2019 hanggang sa kasalukuyan, nagsimulang sumikat ang isa sa mga genre ng Original Pilipino Music (OPM): ang P-pop o Philippine Pop. Sa pagsikat ng “Kings of P-pop” na SB19 na kumanta ng “Go Up”, at “Nation’s Girl Group” na BINI na nagpa-trending ng “Pantropiko”, nagkaroon ng pagkakataon upang makilala at masiyasat ang mga Pilipino ng iba’t iba pang natatanging grupo sa ilalim ng P-pop.

Kilalanin natin ang ALAMAT, isang boy group na kilala sa kanilang konsepto na paggamit ng mga elemento ng kulturang Pilipino! At dahil sa kanilang pagtataguyod nito, sila’y naging nominado bilang “Favorite P-pop Group” noong 2021 sa RAWR Awards at nanalo ng “PPOP Boy Group of the Year” noong 2023 sa PPOP Awards. Mula sa mga mensahe ng kanilang mga kanta o sa paraan ng pagkukuwento sa kanilang mga music videos, ang ALAMAT ay laging HANDAng humaRAP!

Ang ALAMAT ay binubuo ng anim na miyembro na sina Taneo (Ilocano), Mo (Filipino-American), Tomás (Bicolano), R-Ji (Waray-Waray), Alas (Bisaya), at Jao (Kapampangan).

Sila’y nag-debut noong Pebrero 14, 2021 sa ilalim ng Viva Artists Agency kasama ang kanilang pinakaunang kanta na “kbye”. Isang katangian na nagpapaiba sa ALAMAT mula sa ibang grupo ay gumagamit sila ng Bikolano, Cebuano, Ilokano, Kapampangan, Hiligaynon, at Waray-Waray upang itampok ang ilan sa iba’t ibang wikang ginagamit sa bansa. Sa ganitong paraan, tumutulong ito sa pagtawid ng kultura ng mga lokal na pangkat sa Pilipinas. Kasabay nito, sila’y pumupukaw ng interes sa mga tagapakinig ukol sa mga iba’t ibang wika. 

Narito ang mga inirerekomenda kong kanta nila na nagpapakita ng kanilang pagmamahal sa kulturang Pilipino sa iba’t ibang paraan—mula sa paggamit at pagsuot ng mga tradisyunal na kasuotan hanggang sa kahulugan ng mga liriko ng kanilang mga kanta, lahat ng iyan ay makikita sa listahang ito:

Magsisimula tayo sa kanilang pinakasikat na kanta na ang pamagat ay nangangahulugang “dakilang reyna”! Kasama sa music video si Jhoanna ng BINI, makikita natin silang sumasayaw ng Singkil, isang sayaw na umuugat sa tradisyon ng mga Maranao noong sinaunang panahon at may impluwensya ng mga tradisyong Islam. Ito’y ginagamitan ng mga malaking poste ng kawayan na sumusunod sa kumpas ng kanta. Sinusundan nila ang bahagi ng isang epikong Maranao, kung saan gumanap si Jhoanna bilang Prinsesa Gandingan at ang miyembro na si Taneo bilang Prinsipe Bantugan.

“Dayang” - Kalasahan ta kaw at pipiliin ka sa bawat araw, tangi kong dayang

Ito ang sequel ng Maharani na nangangahulugang “prinsesa” sa wikang Tausug, isang grupo ng mga Pilipinong Muslim na naninirahan sa Sulu. Sa wika ng Tausug, ang lyrics na “Kalasahan ta kaw” ay nangangahulugang “mahal kita”! Bukod sa wika, ang kanilang choreography ay kumuha ng inspirasyon sa mga sayaw at martial arts mula sa Southern Philippines tulad ng Pangasik, ang panlalaking bersyon ng Pangalay na nagpapakita ng martial movements. Ang Pangalay ay pinaniniwalaang nagmula sa pre-Islamic at Buddhist na konsepto ng mga anghel at ito’y sinasayaw sa mga kasalan at kapistahan (Camus, 2023). Ang iba pang mga sayaw na kanilang pinagkunan ng inspirasyon dito ay ang Kuntaw, isang sinaunang uri ng martial arts na ginagamit ng mga Pilipinong Muslim sa panahon ng mga Espanyol bilang proteksyon (robin-ho, 2018). Ang Silat na isang uri rin ng martial arts na inaaral sa Mindanao (PHILSILAT, n.d.), at ang Tariray, isang uri ng sayaw na nagmula sa Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi Province sa Timog na bahagi ng Pilipinas kung saan sila ay gumagamit ng kawayan o shell clappers na tinatawag na bola’-bola’ habang ginagalaw ang mga balikat at paa upang magpahayag ng mga emosyon sa sayaw (Santamaria, 2017).

Ito ang pinakauna kong napakinggan at paborito kong kanta mula sa kanila dahil sa mahusay na paghalo ng tradisyunal at modernong instrumental music sa pamamagitan ng paggamit ng kudyapi, angklung, at bamblong! Laganap ang paggamit nila ng mga pahayag na Cebuano tulad ng “gimingaw kaayo ko nimo” na nangangahulugang “I miss you” at “naghunahuna ko nimo” na ibig sabihin ay “iniisip kita.” Bukod dito, kumuha ng inspirasyon ang kanilang music video sa mitolohiya ng mga Bikolano, ang Magindara o “aswang ng dagat” na gumagamit ng kanilang nakakahalina na boses upang mang-akit ng mga mangingisda na kanilang kinakain at minsan, para sila’y iligtas kapag nalulunod (Gaverza, 2016).

“Kasmala” - Kasmala, talagang kakaiba

Ang pamagat na Kasmala ay pagbabaliktad ng salitang malakas. Ang kanilang music video ay nakasentro sa mga nangyari sa 1904 St. Louis World Fair kung saan itinanghal ang mga Pilipino, lalo na ang mga Igorot, bilang mga hayop sa isang zoo sapagkat sila ang tinaguriang “most uncivilized tribe in the Philippines” dahil sa kanilang kakaibang kulay ng balat, katangian ng mukha, at paraan ng pamumuhay. Ipinapahiwatig ng Kasmala ang lakas ng mga Pilipino upang tumindig sa ganoong kahihiyan at sabihing tayo’y higit pa sa kung ano ang pananaw ng mga dayuhan.

Call Me By Your Name is a 2017 sentimental film directed by Luca Guadagnino.

The screenplay is written by James Ivory and is a film adaptation of the novel Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman. It is the third and final film of Guadagnino's "desire trilogy", after I Am Love (2009) and A Bigger Splash (2015). Set in northern Italy in 1983, the film tells the love story between Elio (Timothée Chalamet), a seventeen-year-old living in Italy, and the American student Oliver (Armie Hammer). Also part of the cast are Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel and Victoire Du Bois. The film's editor Walter Fasano also has a cameo in the film: he is the DJ of the famous party scene, as stated by Fasano himself in an interview.

Principal photography took place in Crema, Italy, between May and June 2016.

The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2017, and was subsequently released theatrically in the United Kingdom on October 27, 2017 and in the United States on November 24, 2017. The film received unanimous acclaim, with particular appreciation for the direction, screenplay, soundtrack and performers, and was chosen by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute as one of the 10 best films of the year. It received three nominations for the 2018 Golden Globe, for best film, best actor (Chalamet) and best supporting actor (Hammer) and four nominations for the 2018 Oscar awards for best film, best actor (Chalamet), best non-original screenplay, best song (Mystery of Love). The Oscar was won by Ivory for best adapted screenplay.

Summer 1983. Elio Perlman, a seventeen-year-old French-American Jew, spends his summer holidays in a villa immersed in the Cremasco countryside, in Moscazzano, where his father, an archeology professor, usually hosts a foreign student every year who is busy writing his thesis doctoral degree.

Hello everyone,

Thank you once more for allowing me to present this annual marathon of Oscar-nominated films to your dashboards. This year, the films were grouped by category (for the most part, one day featured only films nominated in a particular category). This is the most exclusive period on this blog, as the selection of films that I can post and queue about is at its most limited. But at the same time, the blog is at its most accessible as this yearly marathon’s selection skews to more popular fare than what I usually queue. I hope you enjoyed this year’s presentation of 31 Days of Oscar once more!

What follows is the exhaustive list of all 381 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This is down from 2022’s record of 420. But that count remains only a fraction of the 5,145 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards since 1927 (excluding Honorary Oscar winners that weren't nominated in a competitive category).

Of those 382, 28 were short films (53 short films is the record, which was set in 2022). 354 were feature films.

Gabrielle Monique Union-Wade (October 29, 1972) is an actress, voice artist, activist, and author. She began her career in the 1990s, appearing on television sitcoms, before landing supporting roles in teenage comedy films She’s All That and 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). Her breakthrough role was in the 2000 film Bring It On.

She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Theresa, a phone company manager, and social worker, and Sylvester E. Union, a military sergeant. She has a BA in Sociology from UCLA.

She is known for her performances in the romantic comedy films The Brothers (2001), Deliver Us from Eva (2003), Daddy’s Little Girls (2007), Think Like a Man (2012), and Think Like a Man Too (2014). She had starring roles in City of Angels (2000) and films Bad Boys II (2003), Cradle 2 the Grave (2003), Neo Ned (2005), Cadillac Records (2008), Top Five (2014), and Breaking In (2018). In 2013, she began starring as the lead character in Being Mary Jane, for which she received an NAACP Image Award. She co-starred in the 2016 film The Birth of a Nation, and next appeared in Almost Christmas (2016) and Sleepless (2017).

Outside of acting, she has written two books: a memoir, entitled We’re Going to Need More Wine (2017), and a children’s book, entitled Welcome to the Party (2020). She collaborated with her husband Dwyane Wade on a second children’s book, Shady Baby, published on May 18, 2021. On September 14, 2021, she released a second memoir, You Got Anything Stronger?: Stories. She has been an outspoken advocate for issues involving women’s health and violence against women. She was included on Time’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020.
