National Farm Animals Day
From cows to chickens, farm animals are essential to agriculture. They provide meat, eggs, and dairy while also helping maintain the land. Plus, they're adorable!
All over the world, farm animals are kept to provide milk, eggs, meat and other products. But many farm animals are treated poorly and kept under terrible conditions. National Farm Animals Day brings an opportunity to show appreciation and raise awareness for these delightful and important creatures.
History of National Farm Animals Day
Farming was likely one of the first ways that people supported themselves as they settled into communities, domesticating plants and animals sometime around 10,000 years ago or more. For thousands of years, farms were kept by families and the animals were treated well as a vital part of survival.
Unfortunately, modern times have brought about larger and larger farms that have turned to practices of factory farming where the animals are treated less humanely. This might mean that they are exposed to unhealthy growth hormones, kept in very small spaces where disease is prevalent, or are just generally provided with a low quality of life.
National Farm Animals Day is here to show how important these farm animals are to the world and how much they deserve to be treated humanely.
How to Celebrate National Farm Animals Day
National Farm Animals Day provides a variety of opportunities to enjoy and celebrate interesting things about these unique and important creatures. Have fun with some of these ideas for celebrating the day:
Visit a Working Farm with Animals
In honor of National Farm Animals Day, some working farms offer options for people from the community to visit their farms and learn more about farm animals by getting up close and personal with them. Kids can often see the way that chickens, goats or pigs are treated, and perhaps there will even be a little petting zoo where they can feed them, feel their fur and have loads of fun!
The Barn Sanctuary, located in Chelsea, Michigan might be a great place to visit farm animals that have been rescued from neglect or abuse.
Make a Donation
One super way to show support for National Farm Animals Day might be to make a donation to a charity or organization that works to protect and help them. These charities work to prevent the mistreatment and abuse of farm animals and other animals. Some of these non-profit organizations include:
Humane Farming Association. This organization was founded in 1985 and has been working to prevent the dangers of factory farming ever since then. Their programs include veal boycotting, farm animal rescue and fighting for slaughterhouse regulations.
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). This American organization works to protect all animals, including pet breeding and farm animals.
Barn Sanctuary. This organization provides a safe haven for farm animals who have either been neglected or abused. Animals can be adopted and sponsored as they are rehabilitated and cared for.
Mercy for Animals. This charity works to prevent the practice of cruelty to animals by reducing suffering of animals while also working to make viable alternatives to animal products.

It's National Pig Day, apparently
The movie's on Freevee right now, and I last saw it when it was on VHS, so...close to the '99 release date. 12-14. I read the book somewhere between 8-10.
I remember them actually sliding in under the radar a bit on this one. They set it up in future tense, with the farm collapsing after many years, watched by an old and tired group of animals, with the hound whose puppies were taken narrating its demise. An offroad from the book, certainly, but as the first adaptation post-Cold-War, and as a movie diving AUDACIOUSLY for the "Family" genre, not a bad sprinkling of imagination.
Fairy tales rarely end on the screen as they do in the book. That's because fairy tales don't promise happy endings, and television sets do.
Either way, it set up for the full trial and hanging of the chickens.

Pic unrelated, it's a hard sentence to jump off of
Oh Jesus I didn't intend that pun and now I have to leave it there
Y'all celebrate National Pig Day in your way, and I'll celebrate in mine

National Farm Animals Day
Farm animals take quite the hit in terms of living conditions, diets, hormonal injections, etc., and this is why it is important to lend our voices to the cause this National Farm Animals Day on April 10. First celebrated in 2005, the day is meant to bring awareness to the overall rough conditions that farm animals are forced to live under. Capitalism has led to a gross increase in demand for livestock by commercial brands. To sell the most amount of meat and dairy products, animals are subjected to growth and antibody injections.
History of National Farm Animals Day
National Farm Animals Day was first commemorated in 2005 by Colleen Paige. Paige is a  well-known celebrity pet lifestyle expert, an author, and an animal rescuer amongst her many other accolades and titles. While the day is not registered as an official day, it is still widely celebrated in the U.S. as the message it aims to convey resounds with many across the nation.
One of the main reasons the day was inaugurated was to shed light on the poor living conditions of farm animals. Firstly, because of commercialization and capitalism, livestock is produced and maintained in large populations. Often, this means cramped and extremely tight living spaces for the animals. All of this leads to poorer health conditions for them as diseases and infections can spread easily amongst the animals. Moreover, to market products to the masses, farm animals are also endlessly injected with antibodies.
World Day for Farmed Animals is also celebrated on October 2. The main purpose of both days remains the same — to protect farm animals in the long run by providing better living conditions for them. Going by simple logic, the farm animals’ products we consume will only be beneficial for us if the farm animals themselves are kept in great conditions. We can start to raise awareness about the day by spreading the word about it and donating to the right organizations.

National Farm Animals Day FAQs
Are there any solid laws in place for farm animals’ protection?
There are very few laws that benefit farm animals, especially on-site protection for animals in the U.S. This means that abuse often gets overlooked or ignored unless there are extremely shocking cases.
Does it cost more to keep farm animals in healthier and better conditions?
It depends, but the answer to the question is mostly, yes. However, consumer polls reveal that many people care about the welfare of farm animals and they are willing to pay more if it means that the animals are treated fairly.
What guidelines should I follow to ensure that I am buying only from trustworthy factories?
There are a few guidelines you can keep in mind while purchasing. You can do your research on brands by looking at their product labels and websites, and trying to see what farm-animal welfare practices they follow. For example, do brands ensure policies against caging/crowding and are they 100% transparent about animals’ lives under factory conditions, etc.?
National Farm Animals Day Activities
Read up on farm animals history: One of the best ways to go about this day is learning about the history of farm animals. By getting to know more about their past, you will be able to sketch a rough idea of their present and future. Animals, like any other living being, deserve respect, dignity, and the right to be heard.
Spread awareness: Talk to your friends, family, acquaintances, strangers, etc., and spread the word about the day and what it stands for. One of the best ways to do this is by using social media tools like hashtags, videos, posts, etc.
Donate to organizations: Search for farm animal organizations active and working in your locality. If none exist in your area, either start your own organization or use other ways to help by volunteering at farms or donating.
5 Facts About Animal Rights That Will Blow Your Mind
Farm animals facing the most abuse: Apart from domesticated animals like cats and dogs, farm animals face the most amount of abuse and neglect from their caretakers.
Fur from fur farms through cruelty: Most fur for fur coats and other clothing items comes from fur farms where animals are killed as young as six months old.
Women over 60 hoard animals: It has been found that women over 60 are more likely to hoard animals in small spaces.
Intentional animal cruelty leading to other crimes: It is estimated that people who intentionally inflict cruelty on animals are more likely going to be involved in other violent crimes, too.
Animal abuse common in farm factories: Undercover investigations led by state authorities have revealed that one of the highest cases of animal abuse occurs in farm factories.
Why We Love National Farm Animals Day
It’s a celebration of animal rights: Animals, be it farm ones or otherwise, deserve the right to live in good conditions like any other living being on this planet. Just because humans have been blessed with the ability to think and command, it does not mean that we should abuse other living beings for our selfish gain.
It’s a celebration of Mother Nature: Mother Nature has gifted us countless things that we benefit from every day. From beneficial plants and herbs to nutritious vitamins and minerals. It is our duty to give back and the least we can do is respect our food sources by providing them with the best living conditions possible.
It’s a celebration for a better tomorrow: The only way we can move forward and hope to have a bright future is if we take the reins today by evaluating our choices. If we do not treat our food sources the correct way, we are also harming ourselves and our future generations in the long run.

(sorry this is from a week ago but) Wait, what's going on right now that's complicated with Amazonian farmers' land rights?
Not farmers, indigenous people
See, recently they put a new law through congress that severely reduces indigenous land to the borders established during the late dictatorship, or immediately post-dictatorship, in 1988. An absolute joke of a border that was dreamed up by some military assholes. People in america may recognize this type of society from the times of westward expansion and think this is a thing of the past because for you guys it is. But here it is a reality. Murder is rampant. The reach of the law is incredibly limited. Government is just too weak and landowners basically run things. THAT'S WHY it's so important to donate directly to the native peoples instead of random NGOs because native people are fucking there and the more power they hold in the land the safer the land will be from agroindustrial expansion.
Well the law was vetoed by the the president and the Supremo Tribunal Federal, aka supreme federal court, labeled it as unconstitutional. Which it is, because our 1988 constitution describes native american land rights in some of its first articles. We thought this would be it for the law
But then the senate (that already overrepresents landowners in rural states) just went along and approved it anyway. I had no idea they could approve something unconstitutional. The progressives and particularly the socialists are fighting this in court. But it happens that for now the legal border is the severely reduced version.
Doesn't mean they'll just give up, because as it happens we don't have any stand your ground laws so even if you own a piece of land, you cannot legally speaking just shoot everyone there. Or attack or threaten them in any way. They'll just have long legal battles individually for the rights to occupy land based on use. Also the Xingu national park, the largest preserved land of the Amazon described as 'larger than Belgium', is being encroached by huge farms that are poisoning their water supply. The border is Visible. I'll try to find video of it but essentially you have a forest and a desert separated by a strict line.
Just last week in the south of Bahia (not the Amazon, let me explain more about the Amazon situation in a bit) Hãhãhãe leadership Nega Muniz Pataxó was shot and killed by an armed militia group that invaded and occupied the Caramuru territory.
The situation in the Amazon, specifically the yanomami territory in Roraima our northernmost state, aka deep forest, is more dire than average given difficulty of access, sheer size, and government abandonment. It's a place that depends on government aid for medicine. It's land that is being systematically invaded by gold miners, pandemic, toxins from nearby farmlands, wood extraction etc. (wood extration is rampant everywhere tho). Early 2023 saw a massive federal government operation by now president Lula to empty the mines and try to look for where funding comes from. Yanomami land is still being invaded to this day, the struggle is ongoing.
The yanomamis need support right now more than any other. Last year saw a massive heat wave that (well, one, caused a girl named Ana Clara Machado to die during the Taylor Swift concert. This is unrelated but I feel like not enough foreign media covered this, Taylor even lied about it as well.) dried up a lot of rivers, killed a LOT of fresh water animals including an unprecedented amount of pink dolphins. Access that was already hard became damn near impossible without boats. I cannot overstate how many pink dolphins were found dead.
Another technique that landowners use to clear space for farms is to just set things on fire and then occupy the empty land, which they legally can do to land that was naturally burned in a forest fire. It happened that Pantanal, another national park of swampland, was massively devastated by fires last year too
this article is from 2020, the year that the worst fire happened, but in 2023 there was another one. It's been happening yearly now due to a) deliberate action and b) climate change aggravation.
And this is not nearly all. Just off the top of my head. If you speak portuguese I recommend following the APIB or the COIAB on instagram to keep up with the news. The FUNAI is the government branch of indigenous organization, but it's not generally that well liked. Still.

On February 14th 2003 “Dolly”, the sheep, the first cloned mammal, was euthanized.
When scientists working at the Roslin Institute in Scotland produced Dolly, she was only lamb born from 277 attempts, from those rom 277 cell fusions, 29 early embryos developed and were implanted into 13 surrogate mothers. But only one pregnancy went to full term, and the 6.6 kg Finn Dorset lamb 6LLS, that’s Dolly to you and I, was born after 148 days. She was born on 5 thJuly 1996 but they never announced her birth for six months.
Dolly lived a pampered existence at the Roslin Institute, not far where I grew up. She mated and produced normal offspring in the normal way, showing that such cloned animals can reproduce.
Dolly the sheep was produced at Roslin as part of research into producing medicines in the milk of farm animals. Researchers have managed to transfer human genes that produce useful proteins into sheep and cows, so that they can produce, for instance, the blood clotting agent factor IX to treat haemophilia or alpha-1-antitrypsin to treat cystic fibrosis and other lung conditions.
This was a major news story around the world, Dolly even appeared on the cover of Time magazine, although I think they missed a trick and the headline should have been “Will There Ever Be Another Ewe”
Dolly was given a lethal dose of an anaesthetic she lives on though conserved by taxidermists her remains were conserved and she is on display in The National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street, Edinburgh.

I enjoyed your family day piece about Malleus setting Lilia up with a disguise to attend family day activities. It would be a shame if we didn't have an interaction with him now!
I was thinking that maybe the parents would go speak to the person in charge of club activities about how their child was doing. So, can I request Riddle speaking to Silver's Dad (Disguised Lilia) about his riding/training?
[Referencing this interaction!]
Family means Nobody is Left Behind or Forgotten.
Tumblr media
A steady trickle of families had been coming in through the day. It was, Riddle imagined, a respite to leave the crowded classrooms and corridors of the Main Building and exit to fresh air and sunshine. More space to move, more space to breathe.
Down by the stables, there were no stuffy professors to speak with, no grades or assignments to review. It was only the horses and him. And, from experience, Riddle knew that parents tended to be more eager hearing about fun extracurriculars than the usual academic activities.
The stress practically melted from their faces when they found themselves among the equines, who whinnied softly and sometimes nestled into open palms as he rattled off about the Equestrian Club's illustrious history. They would ask their questions about animal care and riding, nod approvingly, linger a bit, then be on their ways. Riddle didn't fault them--there's much to see, much to do. There was only so much time they can dedicate to him.
Riddle absentmindedly ran a brush through Vorpal's mane. The horse whinnied appreciatively, earning a small smile from him.
"Kufufu, such a fine stallion!" a chipper voice remarked, ripping Riddle out of his headspace. "All muscle, and so well-mannered."
There, standing at the entrance to the stables, was a short man in a suit. Riddle blinked several times. He wasn't certain why--was it perhaps the strong sun backlighting him?--but it was a challenge for him to piece together the man's face, which seemed to be shrouded in a mist. It was like when he did crossword puzzles and the answer was on the tip of his tongue, yet skittered away the more he attempted to wrangle it.
"You're familiar with horses, sir?" Riddle asked, lifting his brush.
"Oh, plenty! They used to be an integral part of many human settlements, be they for farming, leisure, trade, or war. We don't use horses much where I come from though. Valley folk rely on their own magic for most things--though I'd often witness the cavalry of other nations in combat. Poor things. I wish they didn't have to see the ravages of war."
A resident of Briar Valley and a veteran...
It instantly clicked.
"Ah, you must be Silver's father then. My apologies for not recognizing sooner." Riddle executed a bow. "He has shared many a story with us about you and your courageous service."
"Has he now?" His eyes twinkled, shifting colors. "Kufufu. It sounds as though he's proud of his old man. But enough about me! Tell me about Silver and his time in club. I'd love to hear about how he's doing."
Riddle inclined his head. "Silver is one of our strongest and most disciplined riders. When he rides, I feel as though I'm watching a knight leading a royal procession... if only he didn't fall asleep half of the time!"
"That certainly sounds like him, yes." He laughed, as if he had been expecting the news all along. "What else has Silver been up to?"
"Well, he's adept at befriending the horses and soothing them when they're unsettled. Sometimes this also extends to calming down fellow equestrians who become emotional and shout incessantly at the horses. He never misses a day of training either. Honestly, he's an example the rest of the club should follow."
"The noisy boy you mentioned,” Silver’s father said, “You wouldn't happen to be talking about Sebek, now would you?"
Riddle startled, flushing red. Not with anger, but with embarrassment. "I was trying to be subtle, but if you're going to come out and just say it like that…!"
"No need," he chuckled, holding up a hand. "I'm very familiar with what he's like! Always has been that way, ever since he was a child coming over for playdates with Silver. They'd train together too. Of course, my Silver would beat the stuffing out of Sebek 9 times out of 10, and Sebek would run up to him crying and demanding a rematch. Ah, youth!"
"I-I see..."
I thought that my childhood studies were rigorous, but this is on a completely different level!!
Riddle cleared his throat. "In any case, your son is doing quite well for himself and seems to be getting along well with his clubmates. We in Equestrian Club are proud to call him one of our own."
"That's excellent news," he cried, clapping his hands in a jovial manner, "though not a surprise at all. Silver has never been a problem child. Since he was but a babe in the cradle, he's been so mild-mannered and polite. Doing his own chores, wrestling bears, looking after himself while I’m away. That's my boy, going out into the world and making me proud~”
“Erm, yes…” Riddle’s voice trailed off. His mind was left spinning from the off-kilter energy radiating off of the older man.
What an eccentric individual! Certainly the strangest father I’ve met. And yet…
Riddle hesitated, looking again at the face of Silver’s father. It was pointless, just a garbled? blurry mess of colors and shapes. He could tell that the man was happy, but could discern nothing else.
… Why do I feel as though I know him from somewhere?

The Journey Ahead AU Part 1 of 2
(This is a thought I've been chewing on, and some details might pop up in the Bewitched By Yuletide AU)
A!Eddie gets out of Hawkins w his band, and they make it. They tour the world selling out stadiums, they record 12 albums together & 5 of those albums win a Grammy for Album of the Year, the rest win Grammys for the lead single or the music videos, basically every album wins "a" Grammy,
then they go radio silent after finishing the tour of their 12th album "Defeating The Dragon" until one day nearly 3 months later their official accounts across the internet announce the band is going their separate ways, tht they all saw different futures ahead of them, tht they loved their fans & the opportunities they got to have thanks to their fans & as a farewell they released a re-recording of the lead single tht got them to where they are titled "The Journey Ahead" (it was the first track on their first album)
Life goes on, the industry moves on, and the band do too. A!Jeff becomes a successful movie star, A!Gareth hosts a radio show listened to across the nation, B!Felix (unnamed freak) has a wildly successful solo career no one saw coming, and Eddie... the press & the fans don't rlly know where Eddie went. The last ppl heard concerning him was the sale of his mansion in LA. Life still goes on, and the mystery of what happened to Eddie Munson fades into the background noise.
3 years later the 20th anniversary of their first album approaches & Felix feels they should do something all together again. A true final hurrah.
Meanwhile Eddie is living a fairly normal life in a small college town in Oregon, he owns & operates a book store, spends all day Sunday w the ppl he's come to know as family since leaving fame behind, has 2 successful books written under a pseudonym, and his mate is pregnant w their first child.
O!Steve inherited a lot of money from his grandparents & he decided to pour tht money into opening a no kill shelter & animal sanctuary, he bought a farmhouse not far from the town, his best friend A!Robin lives w him on the farm & coordinates much of the nitty gritty business details, & he focuses on caring for the animals. Eddie blows into town after a successful stint in rehab & moves into the neighboring farmhouse w the old alpha who stobin have Sunday breakfast w every week. They don't think much of it till Wayne calls postponing the Sunday breakfast till next week, explaining tht his nephew is in town. The next week arrives & stobin have an unholy habit of being morning ppl. They go abt morning chores before they walk to Wayne's for breakfast, Steve & Robin r greeted first by the two dogs Wayne adopted from them, then Wayne himself, & when they step inside Steve lays eyes on Eddie. It's like the world stops but Steve's been hurt by alphas before so he's cautious of the attention Eddie gives him, even if Steve feels like something clicks into place whenever they're together. Robin tests Eddie's determination to court her best friend properly for nearly a year & only let's up when Eddie gifts Steve an enclosed patio for the cats of the shelter.
Steddie court for abt 3 more months before taking the leap & mating with official courthouse papers & a small reception tht the band attend (bc they never stopped talking or dropped contact) Eddie moves into the farmhouse & Robin moves out. She doesn't go far though bc that's her platonic soulmate & Eddie built her a cottage on the sanctuary property (it is a big piece of land) so she's always nearby but now there's an illusion of privacy for all 3 of them.
Then the 20th anniversary approaches & the rest of the band want to do something. Gareth thinks it'd b fun to record a limited podcast series, Jeff wants to curate a documentary, and Felix wants to give recording a new album a try. Eddie's the one who settles the arguments by proposing they do all 3. They've all been writing since separating as a band, they've got more than enough to talk abt for a podcast, & a documentary might b fun especially because Jeff wants it to b his directorial debut.
i know some people hate rockstar eddie, but i will always be a fan and i love when he uses his money/resources to woo his stevie🥰
