æ—„æœŹăžă‚ˆă†ă“ăïŒ
So you’ve decided to take that leap of faith and book a ticket to Japan have you? Congratulations; You’re in for a treat! Whether you’re drawn to the Island nations plethora of ancient Temples and Sacred spaces or the hustle and bustle of the cityscape, Japan and the Japanese people will leave a lasting impression on you that you will undoubtedly carry with you for all your days.
Japan, as we know it today, has a long history of being known for its distinct culture and traditions, some of which extend back to 300BC, what is referred to as the 'Jomon period'. Many elements of the Japanese culture developed fully undisturbed by outside influences and continue to be practiced with the utmost precision and dedication to the ways of old.
A finely balanced mix of unyielding tradition and ever evolving state of the art technologies, there are numerous other reasons why Japan is considered to be one of the world’s most fascinating countries.
So what exactly can you expect to find in Japan? Here’s a basic breakdown to make planning your trip that bit easier.
Language: The national language of Japan is Japanese. English wayfinding is widely available in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto however sparingly found in smaller, countryside towns. Other languages commonly found include Chinese and Korean, with a smattering of other Foreign languages also available.
My advice, no matter how short or long a stay you have planned, is to learn even the most basic of Japanese. You’ll be amazed how accommodating the Japanese people can be when even the most basic of attempts at speaking Japanese is made and who knows, you might just end up making some new friends simply just by trying!
As the saying goes, you’ll never know if you don’t go!
Currency, Credit Cards & ATMs: The official currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY).
In Japan, cash is still very much king. While payment by card is becoming more widely accepted in restaurants and stores, my strongest recommendation is to carry a fair amount of cash with you. This applies to travel in major cities (where thankfully ATM’s are more widely accessible; hello 7-11 cash withdrawals!) as well as smaller, less well-appointed country towns.
At the time of posting 100 Japanese Yen (basically the equivalent of our dollar) buys $1.08 AUD and 69 US cents.
Banking: For cash withdrawals majority of Japanese banks will accept foreign cards (though be prepared to be stung by nasty transaction fees if you don’t have a bank card with 0 transaction fees on international withdrawals (hello Citibank!) with some exceptions.
Things to be aware of when your stash of cash starts to dry up is that not any and all ATM’s will accept International bank cards. I mean this literally; I have been stuck in a situation where my Australian bank card would not physically fit into the card slot of an ATM machine. Don’t be like me. Don’t be that person.
Other things to note is that some ATM’s as well as the cards themselves may have a restriction on what time of day money can be withdrawn. Not only that, but often, ATM’s located in banks are only available during banking hours (typically 9AM to 3PM) and not the full 24 hours some of us are used to.
Additionally, depending on your bank and card type, you may incur a daily cap (oftenïż„300,000 which is equivalent to about (at time of posting) just over $3000AUD) on the amount of money that can be withdrawn from your card and account.
Power Plugs: Power plugs in Japan are type A and B. Plug type A is the plug which has two flat parallel pins and plug type B is the plug which has two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin.
The standard voltage is 100 V, and the standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz for those wanting to know.
To save yourselves suffering from having a dead phone or no charge in your camera battery (the literal worst thing for photography enthusiasts) I can’t stress how lifesaving a universal adapter is. Using a universal adapter takes the hassle out of having to purchase dedicated Japanese plugs for your devices and what not.
Just make sure that whatever plug and or adapter you go for has surge protection and a converter for hairdryers and hot tools. Let’s not be causing the entire hotel to experience an electricity surge now.
Safety: Japan is one of the safest countries in the world and is perfect for solo travellers.
Being a woman and one that enjoys solo travel, I can personally attest for the safety of Japan. While not recommended (let’s use some common sense here people), the chances of getting mugged while meandering around the streets at 3AM are pretty much zero to none.
It goes without saying that it pays to be aware of your surroundings and do what you must to keep yourself safe, day or night-time. If travelling in groups, be sure to keep an eye out for one another and organise a dedicated time and meeting spot in the case that one of you does get lost (it happens to the best of us!).
In the case of an emergency, you can reach emergency services on the following numbers:
Police: 110
Coast Guard: 118
Ambulance and Fire Services: 119
Emergency telephone numbers can be called from home phones, mobile phones and public phones. When making an emergency call from a public phone, neither money nor a pre-paid telephone card are necessary.
Although there are a few operators who speak English, if you do happen to find yourself in a situation where you need to call upon emergency services, you should be prepared to explain your situation in Japanese, so that the operator can assist you in the best way possible. It is advisable to speak slowly and specify if you need an ambulance (æ•‘æ€„è»Šă§ă™,  kyuu-kyuu desu) wish to report a fire (火äș‹ă§ă™, kaji desu), or need to report a crime to the police (犯çœȘです, hanzai desu).

What is the maximum money that can be sent via Zelle?
What is the maximum money that can be sent via Zelle?
Zelle has managed to become one of the new alternatives to sending and receiving money in the United States. It has gained users as an easy-to-use application that helps customers facilitate transfers regardless of the bank to which users belong.
One of the characteristics of Zelle is the immediacy that characterizes this new service because, in a matter of minutes, transfers are made regardless of where they are.
One of the most common questions from Zelle customers in the United States is about the maximum limit that can be sent in a transfer daily, weekly or even monthly.
We will clarify the general aspects of the limits established by Zelle for the money transfers depending on the financial institution to which you belong and the limits established by the banks themselves.
What is the limit of money that can be sent by Zelle in the United States?
If your bank does not yet offer the Zelle service, the weekly allowable limit is $500, which cannot be increased or decreased regardless of conditions.
However, if your bank offers the Zelle service, the sending limits are established specifically by each financial institution, which we detail below.
Wells Fargo, Bank of America
These two institutions tell us that the daily limit to send money through Zelle is $3,500, although if you usually send money monthly, the maximum you can transfer will be $20,000.
Capital One, CitiBank, and US Bank
In these three banks, the figures vary, and their daily limit is lower than that offered by other institutions, although higher than that offered by Zelle to customers who do not yet have the service. The daily maximum varies between $1,500 to $2,500, depending on the client’s account type.
Finally, other banks like TD Bank have daily minimums of $1,000 and monthly maximums of $10,000.
Zelle Limits at Top Banks: Daily and Monthly
Mobile payment tools make it faster and more convenient for you to send and receive money for personal, professional or small business purposes. Along with PayPal, Cash App and Venmo, Zelle is a platform that allows you to send money from your bank account to an intended recipient with no fees attached.
Here’s a closer look at how Zelle works, its limits at many of the country’s top banks and what you can do if you reach these monthly and daily limits.
More From Your Money: Choose a high-interest saving, checking, CD, or investing account from our list of top banks to start saving today.
What Are Zelle Limits at National Banks?
Banks often have different limits on how much users can receive or send. The following table lists the daily and monthly Zelle limits at some of the country’s largest banks.
What Are Some Alternative Options if You Hit Your Zelle Limit?
There are other ways to send money if you hit the Zelle limits. Here are some alternatives to consider.
Try another payment platform: Some popular payment platforms include Venmo, PayPal and Square. Many of these services charge a small fee to send money, and users need an account to receive the money.
Write a personal check: While personal checks may seem outdated, they are an excellent alternative to peer-to-peer transfer apps if you need to send a large sum of money.
Withdraw cash: People typically do not have a lot of cash on hand because of the popularity of debit cards, but you can always make a trip to the ATM to withdraw some money.
Use a payment retailer: Western Union and MoneyGram allow you to send money by visiting an authorized retailer and funding the transaction with cash or a debit card. Your recipients can pick up the money by visiting a retailer and providing their name and the transaction number.
Wait a few days: Waiting 24 hours or 30 days until you are back under Zelle’s payment limits is the slowest strategy, but it may be necessary if you want to send a large payment.
How Does Zelle Work?
Here are the steps for sending or receiving money through Zelle.
Step 1: Choose your recipient. Due to increasing Zelle fraud, you should only send money to people you know and trust, like repaying a family member or friend or paying a service provider.
Step 2: Obtain the recipient’s phone number or email address. Anyone with an account at a U.S. financial institution can receive money through Zelle with their phone number or email.
Step 3: Decide your payment amount. Your Zelle limit depends on your bank or credit union. If you want to send a large amount consistently, you may need to find an alternative payment option.
Step 4: Send the money. Your recipient will typically receive the money in minutes if they are already a member of Zelle. They’ll receive instructions on obtaining the funds via email or text if they are not enrolled.
Step 5: Verify the payment. You should always follow up, contacting the recipient to make sure they received the money. You should also check your bank account to ensure it deducted the proper amount from your account.
What Are the Benefits of Using Zelle?
One of the biggest benefits of using Zelle is that it is free and there are no fees to send or receive money. Most competitors charge a small fee if you use a Visa, Mastercard, debit card or credit card to send money, while others charge to transfer funds received to a bank account. Zelle can offer the service at no cost to customers because money is sent directly between bank accounts with no middleman.
While there’s no cost to use Zelle, you can only use your checking, savings or debit card to send or receive money, and you can’t make credit card payments. To be sure, you should check with your bank or credit union to make sure it doesn’t charge extra fees for using the Zelle feature.
An additional benefit of using Zelle over another payment application is the instant nature of the service. The money is immediately transferred to your recipient’s bank account because there’s no intermediary. It takes a few days to transfer funds from the app to a bank account with other services. Other platforms that do offer instant transfers charge a fee for the service.
Final Take To GO
Your bank must have a partnership with Zelle for you to access its features. More than 1,000 financial institutions in the U.S. offer Zelle to their customers. Financial institutions typically incorporate Zelle’s capabilities into their mobile banking apps.
If your financial institution offers Zelle, you should contact it directly to inquire about its daily and monthly sending limits. If your bank or credit union does not provide the service, you must download the Zelle app to send and receive payments.
FAQ
Can I get paid with Zelle?
While Zelle is a popular way to send money, it's also an easy way to receive money from individuals, companies, government agencies and even academic institutions. For instance, it may be possible to request payment via Zelle if you are owed a refund from a university or government agency. Sending money through Zelle is free for both parties and quickly ensures you get the funds.
Can businesses use Zelle?
Just like PayPal, any individual or business with an account at an institution that uses Zelle can use the feature to send or receive money. Many business owners use the service to send and receive money because there are no fees involved. You may want to encourage your customers to send payments via Zelle if the amount is within their daily Zelle transfer limits. It may be necessary to accept other methods for large payments.
What is the maximum you can send with Zelle?
The maximum amount you can send through Zelle depends on what bank you use as the cap will vary both daily and monthly by each financial institution. For example, Bank of America and Wells Fargo have a maximum daily limit of $3,500 whereas TD Bank has a daily limit of $2,500.
Can you send $5,000 through Zelle?
Yes, you can send $5,000 through Zelle if you have a private client or business checking account with Chase.
Can you send $10,000 through Zelle?
The amount you are able to send through Zelle depends on your bank's set limits. Many banks allow you to send $10,000 in a month, but not in one day. Check with your financial institution to find out your daily and monthly sending limits.
How do I increase my Zelle limit?
There is no way to increase your Zelle limit. If you find their limits to be too confining for your needs, you can try another payment platform such as Venmo or PayPal.

BREAKING OVERNIGHT: GCash users hits Unauthorized Transactions amid security breach, leaving potential Nationwide Weekend Boycott and Protest looms in the main national HQ of the e-wallet fintech firm
Tumblr media
(Written by Miko Kubota & Rhayniel Saldasal Calimpong / K5 TeleSerbisyo Patrol #5 news reporter and Station Manager & President of ONC; and Freelance News Writer, Online Media Reporter & News Presenter of OneNETnews)
TAGUIG, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- Philippine electronic wallet fintech firm 'GCash' hits the unauthorized transactions, affecting some verified users as victims, who were losing significant amounts of 4, 5 or 6-digit money fund figures last Saturday early morning (November 9th, 2024 -- Taguig local time). The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the SIM registration law and the security measures in place.
Reports say that the hackers eluded the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration law under Republic Act #11934 by capitalizing on the reconciliation system vulnerabilities. Crossmatching and aligning transaction records in this said system, sometimes post temporary errors in its few to several verified accounts. Users, celebrities and even one Kapuso Ilonggo comedienne actress named 'Pokwang' (whose real name as 'Ms. Marietta Tan Subong'), reported unauthorized withdrawals without receiving any OTPs (One-Time Password) alerts, nor accidently click phishing or hijacking links. This unusual activity suggests that the hackers may have had inside knowledge or exploited a loophole in the system.
In Dumaguete City, our verified account numbers at GCash in both 'Globe Telecom' and 'DITO Telecommunity' were unaffected here. Still, frustrated users here have been trying and attempting to contact via GCash national hotline by dialing 2882, or filing tickets in the GCash app, with little success. There are apprehensions that the situation would ballooned up into a nationwide boycott and public protest at the main headquarters of GCash in Taguig City, National Capital Region, which may possibly happen on Monday (November 11th, 2024) with everything still left unresolved and leaving an image of the e-wallet company that discourages and permanently abandoning e-wallet users forever.
But in this condition, there is an exemption. E-wallet consumers can still cash-in as normal, making 'Quick Response' (QR) for money transfers, and transferring to other Philippine bank institutions that include 'Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation' (RCBC) and MayBank Philippines. These could be processed via 'InstaPay' and 'PESOnet', which may collect a small fee or at least free-of-charge with some limitations first per transaction. Cash withdrawals and Bancnet-supported automatic teller machine (ATM) debit card from both e-wallets and banks are all perfectly fine. In a sense as unfortunate, using e-wallets like GCash are not really necessary anymore, which may automatically broke the agreement of terms and conditions.
Effective immediately, GCash has temporarily disabled the "Send to Many" in-app feature due to cybersecurity concerns, in time for the online crisis of financial technology of e-wallet consumers. In a short press statement to OneNETnews, Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications named 'Ms. Gilda Patricia Maquilan' cited the assured users that the accounts that have been affected are safe, and that adjustments for the wallet are now currently ongoing for this weekend.
The affected users have been contacted by the fintech company, and it has advised them to change their Mobile Personal Identification Number (MPIN) and biometrics with your thumb-handed figures for better and layered security. This was limited to a small number of GCash-verified users, where money balances, regardless if they have 4, 5 or 6 digits were returned to their owners within a day or two.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center (CICC), Southern District Anti-Cybercrime Team (SDACT) and other government cybercrime agencies are investigating the incident. The National Privacy Commission (NPC) urgently tapped to address the unauthorized transactions.
The fintech firm that runs e-wallet company of GCash promised users of the platform not to being worried as their money was yet to be safe, and measures were being taken to correct the situation. The firm stands committed to fix the issue quickly and put in place measures for future incidents, just in time for the upcoming holiday season. Users are advised to track their accounts and report any unusual activities.

Okay so I do think more people should know about being able to opt in/out of OD for their debit cards, but there’s an important caveat here that is often overlooked but the wording of the screenshot op posted is very important.
The wording? “Debit card transactions at merchants or ATMs”. Debit card transactions at merchants or ATMs means ONE TIME transactions.
If you get an OD fee for a card transaction at the grocery store when you’re not opted in, but because something else came thru in the night, sure, you can ask your bank for that back and you’ll probably get it.
I have worked in banking for 6 years for both a major national bank, and a smaller more regional bank. I despise overdraft fees, I think they’re awful and shouldn’t be a thing and I desperately wish my current bank would decide to do away with them
I say all this to emphasize that I do not, and will never agree with charging overdraft fees.
Disclaimer done, here’s the thing: the OP scenario is not going to work in the #1 situation I deal with regarding overdraft fees. On a nearly daily basis. Overdraft fees on ACH, Checks, and Recurring Payments. And that is because the bank never actually explains it, which is shitty and I try to correct that every time it happens.
Also, not every bank has automated review systems— mine has a very strict limit of what can be refunded in a 12mo period but it’s up to the employee to check how many refunds have occurred. You would think that could mean more refunds if you just argue your case— nope. It means that the employee on the other end wishes they could just refund the damn fee, and technically they COULD but there’s a nifty little audit report done on every single fee you waive, and if you go over that, you WILL be risking your job.
Time to clear up the misunderstanding: if you actually read the Reg E guidelines your bank gives you, you’ll notice that it specifically only refers to purchases at the register, or ATM withdrawals. Nothing about ACH, Checks, or recurring payments. Onetime debit card transactions only.
What the bank doesn’t stress to people that I try to correct, is that opting out of OD on your debit card does not mean you will never get an OD fee or that everything that causes an overdraft will be rejected.
Your recurring spotify payment is $10, and you only have $2? That’s a recurring payment, not a one time purchase even tho it’s on the card, so it’s not subject to the opt in/out rules— overdraft fee.
Your mortgage payment takes a little longer to come out than you thought it would and you accidentally overspent? That’s an ACH, not a debit card transaction, and not subject to the opt in/out rules— overdraft fee.
You wrote a check to someone because they wouldn’t take card or cash, and then they take 3 weeks to finally go cash the damn thing and you’ve forgotten all about it, and now because of this check, you’re $100 in the hole— overdraft fee.
The reason given to us lowly peons for that is that recurring payments, ACH, and checks are a binding agreement that you have with another entity to pay them. Therefore, we HAVE to process those. Whether that’s legit or just an excuse, IDK, but that’s what I have to say to people.
But the banks do not explain that— the overdraft opt in/out just only mentions one time transactions and that technically counts as informing you because they didn’t SAY that you would never get an overdraft fee. They just said that you wouldn’t get an overdraft fee for THOSE transactions.
And the bank isn’t required to refund the OD fees on those exceptions, either.
That said, here is something that can work: if you have a transaction that does overdraw you, and you can get the company to refund you (it very specifically must be a merchant credit, not you taking cash/check and making a deposit), that fee most likely CAN be refunded and has no bearing on your fee waiver limits because those are just marked as “bank error”. Not sure on every bank’s policy but the two I’ve worked for both have that rule. So it’s always worth it to reach out to the merchants/providers.
All that aside, yes, OD fees are the Devil and should be eradicated and I mention this at literally every staff meeting EVER and there HAVE been some positive changes made so that we can help more often. I just gotta keep chipping away at them

And this is completely unrelated but since we’re talking about banking misconceptions: y’all, PLEASE stop using cashapp, Venmo, and zelle for literally anything except sending money to people you trust. Because if you think you’re getting a sweet deal on a car and you Venmo someone $1000 but then they never show up with the car? You’re out the $1000. Because when you call to dispute that for not having received merchandise, your bank is going to contact cashapp/zelle/Venmo, NOT the person who scammed you, and according to cashapp/zelle/Venmo, they just sent the money that YOU requested they send, and THEY did nothing wrong, so automatic dispute denial.
I’m literally not allowed to tell people that when filing a dispute even tho I know 100% what’s gonna happen, otherwise I can be fired, so I’m saying it here: don’t use money transfer apps to buy stuff unless you are physically in the presence of the person and have eyes on the merchandise. Just don’t do it.
you don't have to pay overdraft fees ever
the biden administration recently cracked down on overdraft fees which means banks cannot force you to pay them as they have become opt-in -- however you do have to call the bank (for example, paypal payments overdraft you even if you have opted out, as they function like checks.)
my experience is with wellsfargo but i imagine that most major banks may operate similarly:
if you have an overdraft fee, call the bank, you will get a machine. go through the autentification process with it but do not mention your issue when it asks you to (specially not the word overdraft -- this is a conspiracy theory i cannot prove but i swear to god they rewire you to more aggressive phone people if you tipoff the machine) instead say "i'd like to speak to a representative" the machine will be like "lol didn't get that" so you may need to repeat it a couple more times before it wires you to a real person
wait! i'd recomend calling as early in the morning as possible to avoid elevator music.
be nice to the customer service person who picks up (i make a point of thanking them for their help and calling them by their name, if i don't catch it the first time i ask them again for it)
my script is something along the lines of: "hi, i noticed there's an overdraft fee in my account that posted on [date]. i am calling to see if we (WE -- you and the representative are a team against the problem) could do something about it" (<- you may decide to be more direct, i just put my innocent hat on)
most if not all of what they say to you is a script. they will be like "i will check that for you with the automated process that takes into account you previous refund activity" BLAH BLAH BLAH. more waiting. if you have had any refunds in the past 12 months, they will be like "sorry the system says no (:" THOUGH, VERY RECENTLY, they have tacked on this question: do you have any thoughts on that / how do you feel about that / etc. though even if they do not prompt you, here's the next step:
say: thank you! i appreciate the automated review, however i do not agree/approve/consent to being charged a fee. is there any way you could check again / anyone else i could talk to / would it be possible to refund it regardless? etc.
they will check again, possibly more waiting, and then you will get an immediate refund! in the rare case they refuse to, here is the link to the FDIC website that you can refer to (note, this is for overdraft fees only):

8. i cannot emphasize this enough -- be nice !!!!!!!!!!! BE NICE! be cheerful, say "thank you" and "no worries" and "take your time!". it is NOT a confrontation, it is NOT their fault, and most of the time the customer service representative wants this to be as frictionless as possible. they are helping you, use the opportunity to make a moment of their day a lot less stressful than they expect it to be.
that is ALL -- i have been using wellsfargo for over eight years, and have lost hundreds of dollars to predatory overdraft fees charged as a punishment for having no money.
during the beginning covid, when they were momentarily suspended (you had to mention covid on the phone to get them back lol), i came to the realization that all of this time they could have been giving me my money back. there was no reason not to, except corporate greed.
do not let phone social anxiety let them take your money from you, now that it is easier than EVER to get it back. and if you need motivation to pick up the phone, remember this headline from a couple of years back lol:

How Does Bank of America Compare to Other Banks?
Among the biggest banks in the United States is Bank of America. But what about its relative merits? It provides a broad range of services, including mortgages and bank accounts. Because of Bank of America's robust online features, a lot of clients select them. I've been a patron for many years. Every day, I utilize their smartphone app. It simplifies banking and is simple to use.
The national reach of Bank of America sets it apart from other banks. All over the nation, there are ATMs and branches. It's difficult to top this ease of use. I didn't have to switch banks when I relocated to a different state. My new residence was near to a branch. I found that this saved me time and hassle, which was not the case with smaller banks.
Additionally, Bank of America provides reasonable fees. They provide a number of ways to avoid paying monthly costs, such as by setting up direct transfers. For me, this was a huge advantage. I am also grateful for their incentive schemes. Using my Bank of America credit card, I get cash back on regular transactions. Although there are other banks that provide comparable benefits, Bank of America's package is good overall. Their products simplify money management, and their services are dependable and supportive.

Affordable Gokyo Trek
Tumblr media
The Gokyo Trek is a fantastic way to explore the Everest region without breaking the bank. Here's a guide to experiencing this trek affordably:
1. Planning Your Trip:
- Best Time to Visit: The best seasons for trekking are pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November). Traveling during these times can help you avoid the peak season crowds and higher costs.
- Permits and Fees: You'll need to obtain a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card and a Sagarmatha National Park permit. These can be acquired in Kathmandu. The cost is relatively low compared to other expenses.
2. Getting There:
- Flights: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, the starting point of the trek. Booking flights early can help you find cheaper rates. Consider budget airlines or book a package that includes the flight.
- Alternative Routes: If you want to save on flight costs, you can take a bus from Kathmandu to Jiri and then trek to Lukla, adding extra days to your trip.
3. Accommodation:
- Teahouses: The Gokyo Trek is well-equipped with budget-friendly teahouses that offer basic amenities. Staying in these will help you save on accommodation costs. It's a good idea to carry a sleeping bag to ensure a good night's sleep.
- Negotiating Rates: You might be able to negotiate accommodation prices, especially in less busy seasons. Some teahouses may offer discounts for longer stays.
4. Food and Drink:
- Local Food: Eating local meals at teahouses is cheaper than Western food. Opt for simple dishes like Dal-Bhat (lentil soup with rice) which is nutritious and cost-effective.
- Bring Snacks: Carry some snacks from Kathmandu to avoid buying expensive treats in remote areas.
5. Guided vs. Independent Trek:
- Self-Guided Trek: If you're an experienced trekker, you can consider trekking independently, the cost of a guide and porter. However, make sure to carry a detailed map and be well-prepared.
- Group Tours: If you prefer a guided trek, look for budget-friendly group tours to reduce the per-person cost. Compare prices and reviews to find the best deal.
6. Additional Tips:
- Travel Insurance: Ensure you have travel insurance that covers trekking and potential emergencies.
- Cash: Carry enough cash in small denominations, as ATMs are on the trek.
By planning carefully and opting for budget-friendly options, you can enjoy the stunning views of Everest and the Gokyo Lakes without spending a fortune.

Mortgage Lenders
Mortgage lenders assess your financial and credit history to determine whether you are eligible to borrow funds to purchase a home. They also manage your repayment process and navigate relief options if you cannot afford your payments.
Mortgage lender services are offered by banks, credit unions, nonbank lenders and mortgage brokers. They typically request income and asset documentation, pull a credit report and analyze debt-to-income ratios.
Banks
Banks are large financial institutions that offer a variety of financial products, including mortgages. They typically have a long history of stability and a solid reputation. They may also have a greater online presence and more customer reviews to help guide your decision. They prioritize your business and can offer personalized service. However, their size can limit their options, and they may have stricter requirements for loan approval.
Local banks can be used as mortgage lenders, but they generally focus on other products like checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, auto loans and credit cards. They may offer loyalty incentives for existing customers, but their mortgage offerings are limited and they typically have stringent eligibility requirements.
Mortgage lenders specialize in mortgages and have extensive experience qualifying borrowers with unique financial situations that don’t easily fit into conventional underwriting standards. They can often process and approve loans more quickly than banks and have a broader library of mortgage products to choose from.
Credit Unions
Credit unions typically offer lower mortgage interest rates because they're not profit-driven. Like banks, they're federally insured. But unlike banks, credit unions are less likely to sell your mortgage loan to third-party lenders or servicers.
They're also more likely to know you personally, making it easier to work with a lender you trust over the life of your mortgage. In addition, credit unions often offer home equity lines of credit (HELOC) and second mortgages.
However, they may not have as many branches or ATMs as national banks. And they usually have membership requirements, such as residence, occupation or community affiliation. Plus, they may have fewer financial products, such as savings and investment accounts or credit cards. Still, if you're looking for personalized mortgage service and low fees, a local credit union might be worth considering. And if something goes wrong in the mortgage process, you can always go to your local branch for face-to-face help.
Nonbank Lenders
While traditional banks still dominate the mortgage market, they’re increasingly facing competition from nonbank lenders. Non-bank lenders often offer more flexible lending criteria, faster processing times and competitive interest rates.
They’re also more willing to approve borrowers who might be rejected by bank lenders. For example, those with less-than-perfect credit scores or unconventional income sources. They may even specialise in providing government-backed loans like VA and FHA mortgages aimed at higher-risk borrowers.
But while nonbanks can offer borrowers a more flexible variety of mortgage products, they also typically charge higher fees. To examine these costs, Bloomberg News analyzed 38 million Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data from 2018 to 2022. It found that upfront fees are closely correlated with borrowers’ credit scores, which help lenders set interest rates and determine whether to approve a loan. This makes analyzing them critical to fair-lending analysis.
Mortgage Brokers
Mortgage brokers act as intermediaries between lenders and borrowers. Typically, they find a lender that will make the particular type of mortgage a borrower needs and then help arrange the loan process. Typically, mortgage brokers receive payment either from the borrower or the lender for their services. This fee is usually incorporated into the overall cost of the loan.
Mortgage brokering can be an effective solution for borrowers with credit problems that would keep them from qualifying through direct lender programs. However, borrowers should carefully evaluate the mortgage broker they're working with to determine whether they provide enough options or have any preference for certain lenders.
Ask a potential mortgage broker about their experience, the precise help they offer and how much they charge for their services. It's important to know how they make money, since this may affect whether they steer borrowers toward loans with higher fees or rates. Ask to see a copy of any fees they charge before you decide to work with them.

The Global Perspective: How Fee-Free Online Checking Accounts Are Gaining Popularity Outside the US
In recent years, the financial landscape has witnessed a remarkable shift towards more customer-centric banking solutions, and one prominent trend is the rise of the online checking account no fees movement. While fee-free banking has been a growing trend in the United States for some time, it is now gaining traction worldwide, with banks and fintech companies from various countries introducing innovative options to meet the changing needs of consumers. This article explores how fee-free online checking accounts are transforming banking globally, delving into the benefits, challenges, and potential impact on the financial industry.
Tumblr media
A Shift in Consumer Expectations
Historically, traditional banks have relied on fees as a significant revenue stream, charging customers for everything from monthly maintenance and ATM usage to overdraft protection. This model, however, has come under scrutiny as consumers demand more transparency and affordability. The rise of digital banking has enabled financial institutions to rethink their strategies and offer more competitive products, such as online checking accounts with no fees. These accounts provide a refreshing alternative for customers tired of being burdened with hidden costs.
Outside the US, countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa are embracing this trend. In Europe, several countries have already adopted regulations to support this transition, encouraging banks to offer more transparent and cost-effective services. This shift is driven by a combination of consumer demand, technological advancement, and increasing competition from fintech startups eager to challenge traditional banking norms.
The Role of Technology
Technology plays a pivotal role in the rise of fee-free online checking accounts. The widespread adoption of smartphones and mobile applications has made it easier for consumers to access financial services on the go. In many regions, mobile banking apps offer user-friendly interfaces that allow customers to open accounts, manage funds, and make transactions without incurring fees. This convenience appeals to a younger generation that values seamless digital experiences and is often wary of conventional banking methods.
Fintech companies are particularly instrumental in this movement, as they often operate with lower overhead costs than traditional banks. By leveraging technology, these companies can offer competitive fee-free banking services, which are increasingly attracting tech-savvy customers. Many of these fintech firms also prioritize user experience, providing intuitive features and real-time notifications to keep users informed about their finances.
Global Adoption and Regional Variations
The adoption of fee-free online checking accounts varies across regions, influenced by factors such as regulatory environments, cultural preferences, and financial literacy. In Europe, countries like the UK and Germany have seen significant uptake, with many consumers opting for online-only banks offering no-fee accounts. These nations boast well-established digital banking ecosystems, supported by regulatory frameworks encouraging innovation and competition.
In Asia, the push towards digital banking is gaining momentum as well. Countries like India, China, and Singapore are witnessing a surge in digital adoption, driven by the rapid growth of the middle class and increasing smartphone penetration. Fee-free online checking accounts have become attractive options for individuals seeking convenience and affordability.
Meanwhile, Africa is experiencing a unique transformation. With a substantial portion of the population remaining unbanked, mobile banking solutions are bridging the gap. Companies are capitalizing on this opportunity by providing fee-free banking services that cater to underserved communities. This approach not only promotes financial inclusion but also fosters economic growth by empowering individuals to participate in the formal financial system.
Challenges and Considerations
While the rise of fee-free online checking accounts presents numerous benefits, it also poses challenges for both consumers and financial institutions. For consumers, the digital nature of these accounts means that access to physical branches and in-person assistance may be limited. Additionally, the emphasis on digital channels could pose a barrier for individuals less familiar with technology or those without reliable internet access.
Financial institutions, on the other hand, must navigate regulatory compliance, cybersecurity concerns, and the need to maintain profitability in the absence of traditional fee structures. Striking the right balance between offering competitive services and ensuring operational sustainability remains a key challenge for banks and fintech firms alike.
Conclusion
The global shift towards fee-free online checking accounts reflects a broader trend of evolving consumer preferences and technological innovation in the financial sector. As this movement gains momentum outside the US, it highlights the potential for a more inclusive and accessible banking system that caters to a diverse range of customers. While challenges remain, the continued expansion of fee-free online checking accounts has the potential to reshape the financial industry, driving positive change and fostering greater financial empowerment worldwide.

#OneNETnewsInvestigates: ASC potentially slap to mislead and partially falsifying 'Free Physical VISA Card' offer of MayBank Phlippines' EzySave+, along the e-wallet partnership of the GCash app [EXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media
TAGUIG, NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION -- MayBank Philippines, in collaboration with e-wallet fintech app 'GCash', has just launched its new digital savings product dubbed 'EzySave+'. The aforesaid newly launched savings shall provide easy and fast readily available banking service to the Filipino consumers through the GCash app. Recently as unexpected however, claims were emerging which somehow classified this new promotion, yet to be misleading and falsified. One of the major confusions has been that of being eligible to have a free physical VISA debit card.
'EzySave+' is a digital savings account, where you can open one directly within the GCash smartphone app, an e-wallet fintech giant from Globe Fintech Innovations Inc. (GFIi), which is owned and wholly-operated subsidairy of G-Xchange. It offers several benefits, including no maintaining balance or annual fee, and free ATM withdrawal via Bancnet-powered ATM (automated teller machine) of any bank in the Philippines. Apart from that, savings with at least PHP0.01 cent earns an interest, with free life insurance coverage of up to PHP1M (or U$D17,108), regardless of personal accident, life and critical illnesses.
OneNETnews can now exclusively reveal via mobile phone patch last Friday afternoon (November 8th, 2024 -- Dumaguete local time) that the free physical VISA debit card is available for users who maintain a minimum savings deposit of PHP10,000 (or U$D172). Below this said amount, the request of a physical VISA debit card will be denied for the meantime, right after you open your very first 'EzySave+' account. This also raised fears on the part of false and misleading advertisement by the Ad Standards Council (ASC).
In our thorough investigation, it proved that it is valid that free VISA debit card issuance with a minimum deposit amount of PHP10,000, in which the basis of online or physical application. The stated requirement is clearly indicated on the website of MayBank and the EzySave+'s terms and conditions. Thus, one can say that there is a partially valid claim of deceptive, false and misleading advertisement, because the standards for qualification were not specified in the first advertisement. The bank advertiser of MayBank belongs in a probable first offense violation of PHP100,000; based from the Codes and Standards rules from the ASC.
For users, who have at least the minimum deposit requirement and are willing to take the risk, you can legally request an applicable free VISA debit card over the phone or in-person at any MayBank branch. This includes branches in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; where users can easily get their debit cards. If you're in Dumaguete branch office at MayBank, it was permanently closed during the Coronavirus Disease-19 (CoViD-19) pandemic and replaced with the newly-opened 'Watsons Pharmacy'. This new local pharmacy is located right next to the 'Dumaguete Public Market' at the 'LEU Building, Brgy. 4, Real Street corner Bishop Epifanio Surban Street, this said city and province'; with the transition happening in late-November 2022. This effectivity of change does not affect its own banking app 'Maybank2U PH' under MayBank Philippines, which will continue to serve clients in normal operations.
While this partnership of 'MayBank Philippines' and 'GCash' brings a gleam of hope for a digital savings account, the supposed requirements to avail free VISA debit cards have created an uproar with charges of obscure information in advertising. It is about time that companies made conditions like these known, so that they do not mislead the banking consumers. It will be really interesting to note how MayBank and GCash address these concerns and ensure a fair, honest banking experience to all Filipino consumers.

Budget Travel Tips for China: How to Save Money on Your Trip
Exploring China, with its rich history, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes, is a dream for many travelers. However, navigating this vast country on a budget can be challenging without the right strategies. Whether you're drawn to the ancient wonders of the Great Wall, the bustling streets of Shanghai, or the serene landscapes of Guilin, there are numerous ways to stretch your budget and make the most of your journey. From affordable accommodation options to savvy transportation choices and tips for dining on a dime, this guide will equip you with practical advice to enjoy China without breaking the bank. Discover how to experience the best of China while keeping your expenses in check, allowing you to focus on creating unforgettable memories.
Here are some tips to help you save money while exploring this fascinating country:
Book Flights Early: Look for deals on flights well in advance, and consider flying into major hubs like Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, which often have cheaper flights due to higher competition.
Use Public Transportation: China's public transport, like buses, subways, and trains, is extensive and affordable. Opt for these instead of taxis, which can be pricier, especially in larger cities.
Eat Local: Chinese street food and small local eateries (known as "dai pai dong" in Cantonese or "xiaochi" in Mandarin) offer delicious and budget-friendly meals. Avoid touristy restaurants as they tend to be more expensive.
Stay in Budget Accommodations: Hostels, guesthouses, and budget hotels are widely available in most cities. Websites like Hostelworld, Booking.com, or Ctrip can help you find affordable options.
Visit Free Attractions: Many of China's attractions have free admission or are very affordable. Research and prioritize visiting parks, temples, and local markets that don’t charge entrance fees.
Travel Off-Peak: Avoid traveling during Chinese national holidays like Golden Week (first week of October) when prices for accommodations and transport skyrocket. Shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) often have better rates.
Learn Basic Chinese Phrases: Knowing a few basic phrases can help you negotiate prices and communicate with locals more effectively, potentially saving you money in transactions.
Negotiate Prices: Especially in markets and with street vendors, bargaining is expected. Start with a lower price and be prepared to walk away if the price isn't right.
Use WeChat Pay or Alipay: These mobile payment apps are widely accepted in China and can often get you discounts or cashback at various vendors, including restaurants and shops.
Pack Accordingly: Bring essentials from home, such as over-the-counter medications and toiletries, as these can be more expensive in China, especially if you need specific brands.
Avoid International ATMs: Using ATMs that charge international transaction fees can add up. Instead, withdraw larger amounts of cash at local bank ATMs or use your bank’s partner ATMs to minimize fees.
Join Free Walking Tours: Many cities offer free walking tours led by locals or expats. These can provide you with valuable insights into the city’s culture and history without costing you anything.
Conclusion
In conclusion, traveling to China on a budget requires careful planning and consideration, especially concerning expenses like accommodation, transportation, and food. By leveraging strategies such as booking in advance, opting for local street food, and using public transport, travelers can significantly reduce their expenses without compromising on experience. Additionally, securing the necessary China visa ahead of time is crucial to avoid any last-minute complications or extra costs. With these tips in mind, exploring China affordably becomes not only feasible but also enriching, ensuring a memorable and budget-friendly journey through this fascinating country.
