David Purdum at ESPN:
Joey Chestnut, the 16-time champion of the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, will not compete in the annual Fourth of July event next month, Major League Eating announced Tuesday. A spokesperson for Major League Eating (MLE) told ESPN that Chestnut had chosen to "represent another hot dog brand" and therefore would not be allowed to participate in the Nathan's contest, which is held annually at New York City's Coney Island. Chestnut, competitive eating's biggest star who is known as "Jaws," has won the event eight years in a row. He reportedly agreed to a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, a company that makes plant-based hot dogs, and a competing company to Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs. "It would be like Michael Jordan saying to Nike, 'I'm going to represent Adidas, too,'" MLE event organizer George Shea said. ESPN has reached out to Chestnut and Impossible Foods for comment.
16-time men’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Champion Joey Chestnut has been barred from competing in this year’s edition due to Chestnut’s sponsoring of Impossible Foods (a competing company with Nathan’s), who provide plant-based hot dogs.

When you have the microphone, what you say matters, even when you're just kidding. It's so easy to take refuge in the "just" of just kidding... But the preposterous and absurd can still shape our understanding of ourselves and one another. And ridiculous cruelty is still cruel.

Another American chain tracing their history back over 100 years. Starting life as a nickel hot dog stand in Coney Island in 1916, the chain bears the name of it's co founder, Nathan Handwerker. Nathan started the business with his wife Ida. The hot dog recipe they used was her idea, with her grandmother creating the secret spice sauce. Although they were Jewish, their produce lacked rabbinic supervision and the meat wasn't kosher, they advertised it as 'kosher style.' Handwerker was an immigrant who arrived in New York and found work at Feltman's restaurant in Coney Island. Going Into Business For Himself One legend has it that Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Durante, the 'singing waiters' encouraged him to start his own restaurant. The official company history doesn't mention this, but it's a nice story. The couple spent their life savings of $300 to start the business. When he launched he undercut his former employer who was charging 10c for a hot dog. Nathan's came in at 5c! At the time, food regulation wasn't really a thing, and hot dogs were considered cheap fare. Handwerker had customers dressed in surgeons smocks eating at his place, presumably surgeons would only eat good food. Expansion Nathan's son Murray drove the expansion of the chain. A second branch in New York was added in 1959 and a third in 1965. By 1968 the company had gone public. The family sold the chain to a group of private investors in 1987, at which point the chain was franchised and expanded rapidly. They acquired Kenny Rogers Roasters and Miami Subs Grill. By 2001 Nathan's Famous had 24 company owned units, 380 franchised units and 1400 stores in 17 foreign countries around the globe. They signed a deal with major league baseball in 2017 to become the official hot dog sponsor. The original store had remained open 365 days a year since its inception, until being forced to close due to hurricane Sandy, but six months later it was repaired and reopened. One quirk is that the original store still served fried frogs legs which has been on the menu since the 1950's Hot Dog Contest On the 4th July Nathan's Famous hosts an annual hot dog eating contest. Starting in the 1970's the contest sees contestants trying to eat as many hot dogs as possible in 10 minutes. The current record holder is Joey Chestnut with 76 hot dogs and Miki Sudo with 48 and 1/2 for the ladies. Read the full article

Molly Sprayregen at LGBTQ Nation:
An anti-trans website devoted to denigrating trans women athletes seems to believe that trans women even have advantages in sports like darts, poker, esports, and yes, hot dog eating contests. SheWon.org, which purports to be entirely volunteer-run, provides a list of cisgender women athletes and the victories they allegedly would have secured in various competitions had a trans woman not beaten them.
This list includes Nathan’s Famous 2021 July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest, which occurs annually at New York’s Coney Island. The SheWon list names three women who would have come in first, second, and third place (rather than 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) had the actual winner, competitive eater Michelle Lesco, not won first place. The kicker: Lesco is not even transgender. There have long been rumors about her gender identity, which likely stemmed from a 2021 podcast in which Australian football player Sam Newman mocked Lesco for being trans, though it’s unclear where he got that information. But on Wednesday, Lesco responded to a post on X about the list to confirm her cisgender identity. “Just goes to show that people are more than willing to spread misinformation if it feeds outrage and vitriol,” she wrote before identifying herself as the 2021 winner and a “biological female.”
SheWon.org has been getting some attention as of late. Anti-LGBTQ+ Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), posted a link to it on X and claimed that it highlights the wins that were “stolen from female athletes because of biological men wrongfully competing in women’s sports.” In reality, women’s sports are harmed far more by sexism and unequal funding.
Right-wing anti-trans extremists such as SheWon.org push the baseless claim that trans women have an "unfair advantage" in hot dog-eating contests.
