The Clicking of the Chain (The Silence of the Lambs Parody) (#2 of 2)
for kloktober day 12: Favorite villain
Here's another installment, featuring someone I feel is underrepresented in mtl content: the Metal Masked Assassin.
“It rubs the lotion on its skin. It does whenever it’s told.”
At the bottom of a rough concrete pit, there was a man the height of a refrigerator shaking in a dingy sweatsuit, staring up into the face of a man whose eyes and nose were obscured by a metal plate. The work lights that hung from the rafters couldn’t light the hole, and the plastic toilet bucket’s volatility couldn’t circulate out. The air in the hole was thick and sour… gel air fresheners covered it above. Occasionally, when buckets of lotion or water were sent up and down, Nathan could smell something like pine or cherries over his own filth. He clutched that bottle of Jergens like a kid holding a blankie.
“My parents will give you whatever you want, you name it! Just ask! You want money? You-”
“Rub it in!”
A shivering black and brown chihuahua crested climbed onto the man’s foot. When it was picked up, it growled like it was rabid and tensed up like a shrimp to try and bite the hands that held it, but once it was at it’s owners chest, it started licking the air and thrashing its head and tail like it was having a seizure. When the man pointed, the dog glanced down into the hole before resuming it’s jubilant tremors.
“Yes… It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.”
Nathan ducked and slopped some into his hand before rubbing it as far past his shoulder blade as he could reach. “Uh, you know, we won’t press charges. It’s only been a couple of days and-”
“No. Just one day.”
“That’s it? Fuck- Uh, well… My dad’s really important, he’ll pay you no questions asked. And whatever gay little shit you want he’ll get it, ok? He’ll do it-” The masked man rolled his eyes and threw down a bucket with a handheld light tied to the rope. The clang it made against the side of the hole made Nathan jump… His hair almost came unstuck from the back of his neck when he made out browned handprints on the walls. A fingernail, no, a fingertip was lodged between two stones. The sound of his own scream volleying in the shadows was the most comforting sensation he could imagine.
What a loudmouth! The man in the mask jerked the rope and made the light and the bucket clack against the walls and only made the din louder.
“He’ll give you anything! Call him, let me talk to ‘em, I don’t know! You want money? Ten thousand? You can have it! Twenty? Thirty? Thirty… thirty-five? Call him, fuck! Just call my fucking dad! I…”
“Put it in the basket!”
“Call him! What do you want!? Call him! Call my fuckin’ dad!” He groaned and gagged and kept on crying like a stuck pig on a spike. “Just call him, asshole! I want my dad!”
“Put it back!”
“No!” The sobbing got less entertaining by the second.
“Put it in the fucking basket!”
He flung it in there and turned his back, his fingers digging and searching through his hair, scratching. “What do you want? Just… Tell me! I want to go home!”
The bucket was pulled up and the rope was coiled. The man stood after he set it aside, and his own “anguished” cries rose above Nathan, mocking and taunting, with the playful lilt of a smile, one growling heave after the other.

Christmas Gifts for Runners: A Guide to the Perfect Present
The holiday season is just around the corner, and finding the perfect Christmas gift can be exciting and challenging if you have a runner in your life. Runners are a unique group, passionate about their sport, and often very particular about their gear. Whether they're seasoned marathoners, trail enthusiasts, or just starting on their running journey, a thoughtful gift that complements their lifestyle can be significant. Here's a comprehensive guide to Christmas gifts for runners across different formats.
1. Apparel and Footwear
a. Running Shoes:
A good pair of running shoes is one of the most essential items for any runner. However, choosing the right pair can be tricky since it depends on the runner's foot type, running style, and preferences. Consider a gift card to a specialty running store where they can get properly fitted, or if you know their favorite brand and model, surprise them with a new pair. Brands like Nike, Brooks, and ASICS offer a wide range of options catering to different needs.
b. Moisture-Wicking Clothing:
Running gear that keeps them dry and comfortable is always a hit. Look for moisture-wicking tops, shorts, or leggings that are lightweight and breathable. Brands like Under Armour, Lululemon, and Patagonia offer high-quality options that can make a runner's experience more enjoyable, especially in various weather conditions.
c. Compression Gear:
Compression socks, sleeves, or tights can be a great addition to a runner's wardrobe. They help improve circulation, reduce muscle fatigue, and aid in recovery after long runs. Companies like CEP and 2XU specialize in compression gear that combines functionality with style.
2. Tech Gadgets
a. GPS Running Watch:
A GPS running watch is a fantastic gift for both novice and experienced runners. It helps track distance, pace, heart rate, and other essential metrics. High-end options like the Garmin Forerunner series or the Apple Watch offer advanced features, including route mapping, training plans, and even music storage.
b. Wireless Earbuds:
Music can be a great motivator during a run, and wireless earbuds designed for sports are a thoughtful gift. Look for sweat-resistant models with a secure fit, such as the Jaybird Vista or the Beats Powerbeats Pro. They offer excellent sound quality and stay in place even during intense workouts.
c. Running Headlamp:
For runners who enjoy early morning or evening runs, a reliable headlamp is a must-have. It ensures safety by lighting up the path and making it visible to others. Brands like Petzl and Black Diamond offer headlamps with adjustable brightness levels, long battery life, and comfortable fit.
3. Hydration and Nutrition
a. Hydration Packs and Bottles:
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during long runs. A hydration pack or handheld bottle is a practical gift that a runner will appreciate. CamelBak offers a variety of hydration packs with different capacities, while Nathan and Salomon provide lightweight, ergonomic handheld bottles that are easy to carry.
b. Energy Gels and Bars:
Runners often need a quick energy boost during their workouts. Gifting a variety pack of energy gels, chews, or bars can be a thoughtful and useful present. Brands like GU, Clif, and Honey Stinger offer products that are easy to digest and packed with essential nutrients.
c. Electrolyte Supplements:
Electrolyte supplements help runners replenish lost minerals and stay hydrated. Nuun and Skratch Labs offer effervescent tablets that can be added to water for a refreshing, electrolyte-rich drink. These are great stocking stuffers that a runner can easily take on the go.
4. Recovery and Wellness
a. Foam Roller:
A foam roller is an essential tool for post-run recovery, helping to relieve muscle tension and improve flexibility. Opt for high-density rollers like the ones from TriggerPoint or RumbleRoller, which offer deep tissue massage and come in various textures and sizes.
b. Massage Gun:
For runners who experience frequent muscle soreness, a massage gun can be a game-changer. It provides targeted deep-tissue massage to help with muscle recovery and pain relief. Popular options include the Theragun and Hypervolt, which offer adjustable speed settings and various attachments for different muscle groups.
c. Post-Run Body Care Bundle:
Post-run body care bundles from brands like 1Hour-After are perfect Christmas gifts for runners. These sets typically include muscle balm gels, refueling body lotions, cooling body washes, anti-chafing sticks, and high-quality strengthening shampoos and protein-rich conditioners. Designed to soothe soreness and promote relaxation, they help runners recover and stay refreshed for their next workout.
d. Epsom Salts and Bath Soaks:
A relaxing bath can do wonders for tired muscles. Epsom salts or specially formulated bath soaks with essential oils can be a thoughtful gift that promotes relaxation and recovery. Dr. Teal's offers a range of bath products designed to soothe sore muscles and revitalize the body.
5. Accessories
a. Running Belt or Armband:
A running belt or armband is perfect for carrying essentials like keys, phone, and ID during a run. Look for options that are lightweight, adjustable, and have secure pockets. SPIbelt and FlipBelt are popular brands that offer comfortable and functional designs.
b. Gloves and Headbands:
For runners who brave the cold, thermal gloves and headbands can make a big difference. Look for moisture-wicking, insulating materials that keep hands and ears warm without overheating. Brands like The North Face and Smartwool offer high-quality accessories that are perfect for winter runs.
c. Sunglasses:
A good pair of running sunglasses not only protects the eyes from UV rays but also enhances visibility by reducing glare. Oakley and Goodr offer lightweight, stylish sunglasses that stay in place during runs and come in various colors and lens options.
6. Books and Inspiration
a. Running Books:
Inspiration and knowledge are powerful motivators. Consider gifting a book on running that offers training tips, personal stories, or insights into the mental aspects of the sport. Titles like "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall or "Let Your Mind Run" by Deena Kastor provide valuable lessons and motivation.
b. Subscription to Running Magazines:
A subscription to a running magazine like Runner's World or Trail Runner is a gift that keeps on giving. It provides regular updates on the latest gear, training tips, and inspiring stories from the running community.
c. Running Journal:
A running journal is a great way for runners to track their progress, set goals, and reflect on their training. Look for journals specifically designed for runners, with sections for recording distances, times, and notes on each run.
7. Experiences
a. Race Entry:
For many runners, participating in a race is a thrilling experience. Consider gifting a race entry to a local 5K, half-marathon, or even a marathon. It's a gift that offers not only the excitement of the race day but also the motivation to train and prepare in the weeks leading up to it.
b. Running Retreat or Camp:
A running retreat or camp can be a unique and memorable gift. These events offer runners the opportunity to train in beautiful locations, meet like-minded individuals, and learn from experienced coaches. Retreats like those offered by Active at Altitude or ZAP Endurance provide a blend of training, relaxation, and adventure.
c. Personalized Coaching:
For runners looking to improve their performance, personalized coaching can be a game-changing gift. Many coaches offer virtual sessions that include customized training plans, feedback, and support. Platforms like TrainingPeaks or Runcoach connect runners with experienced coaches who can help them reach their goals.
Conclusion
Choosing the perfect Christmas gift for a runner involves understanding their needs, preferences, and goals. Whether it's a piece of high-tech gear, an inspiring book, or a thoughtful accessory, the right gift can enhance their running experience and show them how much you support their passion. This holiday season, consider these options to find a present that will make the runner in your life excited to lace up their shoes and hit the road or trail.

Pretty good
Hip flexors are tight, calves were tight but have loosened up, still a little nauseous sometimes but otherwise good. I think I ate plenty before and drank well during. I had an ensure (350cal) at 5:30, a bowl of oatmeal with protein powder at 5 (200?), 4 Gus during, half a banana at mile 20, a few cups of Powerade, and I carried my 16oz Nathan handheld along with me. I think I drank it 4 times plus extra water cups. Afterwards I pounded a chocolate milk, a water bottle, and nibbled on some bread. I had real food about 2 hrs later. Ironman training taught me the importance of eating enough beforehand, it's always more than I want to eat, but it's so much better than running hungry.

Running in a Winter Wonderland
The first words out of everyone’s mouth when I told them I was moving back to the Midwest were, “oh my God, the WEATHER!” Not just my fellow Angelenos, my Illinois friends and family, too, would have one sentence of welcoming excitement, followed by, “but are you ready for WINTER?” I stopped watching Game of Thrones after the first season, but “Winter is Coming” was looming, impending doom since we arrived in August. I thought, you better enjoy this mild weather now, Sher, for it may be your last before the unbearable winter nightmare begins!
This was particularly troublesome as a runner. One of the things L.A. runners take great pride in is that they can run year round. Usually in shorts and a tank top. Still, I wasn’t too worried - I’ve always been one who could hammer out long runs on a treadmill if necessary. So, I enjoyed the seasons turning. The true fall weather, legitimate temperatures for sweaters, scarves, and boots, not to mention long sleeve running tops. November rolled through, then December, now January...and I have kept running outside. I have discovered that cold weather running is actually my FAVORITE. 35 - 40 degrees is perfection! Chicago runners run year round, too… and there is always some crazy dude in shorts! I have learned that the Ranulph Fiennes quote is true: “There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.”
Here are my Top 5 Necessities to be an Awesome Winter Running Warrior.
1. Gloves/Mittens - When the temps dip and the wind blows, this is actually the first thing you need. Thin gloves under 40 degrees, and intense mittens under 20. I wear the cheap-o stretchy non-technical ones from the $3 Target bin if it is above 20. That way if you take them off and lose one, it is no biggie. If it is below 20, I wear my Oiselle Soft Shell Mittens. These suckers are WARM. Honestly, too warm for over 25 degrees. They will give you the hand sweats (interesting sensation) unless it is in that bone chilling temperature zone. Then they are an absolute dream, and no fear of losing them, because you are not taking them off. At first I was hesitant ordering mittens, I mean, what am I? Ten? But they are warmer, and I find I wear them as my regular gloves on those super chilly days, too.
2. Vest - I’ve found it is actually better to do multiple thin layers than one thick one. It wicks the sweat away quickly and you can peel something off if you get too warm. So, if it is above 20, I usually wear two thin long sleeves, and top with a vest. Bonus - a vest has pockets that hold all sorts of goodies… your phone, lip balm, Gus, gloves that you take off after you warm up. My Oiselle Katron vest is still going strong after a few years.
If it is in the teens or negatives, I wear my Lululemon First Mile jacket over a long sleeve. But it is really too much if it is over 25 degrees.
3. Gaiter or Balaclava - Along with gloves/mittens this is a must. If it isn’t too cold, you can get away with a buff or gaiter around your neck, and pull it up over your nose and mouth for a bit of time to warm your face up. The two problems with the gaiter are that it fogs up your sunglasses and they don’t stay up for long periods of time, in my experience. Which is fine, as long as it isn’t too cold. Pair with an ear warmer or hat and you are all good.
When it is below 20, the balaclava is a gift from heaven! My friend Alie sent me one, and I LOVE it. Not only do I look and feel like a straight-up ninja, but my face stays warm. You can pull it down to your chin when you want to, and pull it up over your mouth when you need to. No more windburned cheeks!
4. Handheld or Hydration Vest - One bummer of winter running is that water fountains are turned off so the pipes don’t freeze. That means you have to carry more water with you on your run. I also recently learned the hard way that if you have your typical pack with the bladder - the water will freeze in the tube if you do not either blow the water back into the bladder or have an insulated cover for the tube. I recently bought a new, lighter vest, the Nathan Firecracker. I like that it has two bottles up front (they won’t freeze on my long runs!) and I can have Nuun in one and water in the other.
Another tip - put your phone in a sock and then put it in your jacket or have it right next to your body. Super cold temps drain your battery pretty much immediately. Again, learned through the School of Rookie Mistakes.
5. Nuun - I recently discovered the glory of drinking Nuun warm! This is the perfect way to get your electrolytes or vitamins (I am a huge fan of the new vitamins line) in a warm beverage. It is like having a comforting cup of tea. It is the perfect, low-cal way to get in your H2O, stay hydrated, and warm up after your run.
I am still looking for pants that are warm enough to avoid frozen buns syndrome. (FBS) I have a few pairs of fleece lined tights that I love, but none are truly warm enough on their own when it is below 20. So, I wear two pair, and it is much more comfortable than I imagined. The one thing that drives me inside to the treadmill - ICE. I have this horrible vision of me slipping and falling into Lake Michigan, so if it is icy, I bring it inside. I have heard good things about the running Yaktraks, but I still need to get a pair. We haven’t had much snow, but when we do, I break out my trail shoes for some extra grip.

Summer Running Must Haves–The BEST Gear from Head to Toes!
Summer Running Must Haves – Here’s my list of the best running gear, clothes, shoes, fuel belts, sunblock and more for runners during the hot weather months. Check it out and let me know if you have any recommendations you love too!
I put this list from head to toe so I’d remember during the video. But it also helps when you’re packing or headed out the door for a run – do a quick full body check starting at your head and going down your body to make sure you have everything you need for a great run!
Bonus Tip: I did a little summer running hack yesterday during my long run. Check it out on my Instagram Stories – it’s saved in the favorites under “Hot Temps Running”.
–> Check out the video on the Run Eat Repeat IGTV channel!
Summer Running Survival Kit:
1. Sunblock for face – For my face I use an oil free one like Neutrogena Sport Face Sunblock spf 70. Get a face specific oil free sunblock to help prevent it getting in your eyes.
Neutrogena Sport Face Sunblock spf 70 // Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunblock spf 100
2. Sunblock for body – and for my body I use sport sunblock lotion for my arms and sports sunblock spray for my legs
Banana Boat Sports Sunblock Lotion // Coppertone Sports Sunblock Lotion
Banana Boat Sports Sunblock Spray spf 50 // Neutrogena Sports Sunblock spf 70
3. Visor or Hat – I love the original Pro Compression visors because they have a big brim. But I don’t think they sell them anymore … luckily golf visors or unisex ones work too!
Nike Big Brim Golf Visor // Nike Women’s Aerobill Visor
4. Sunglasses – I love Oakley Women sports sunglasses or fun colorful ones – just make sure they have full UV protection. <- that’s important for eye health, not just to make it more pleasant to see while out on a run!
Oakley Women’s Sunglasses unstoppable // Oakley Women’s Sunglasses
5. Sports Bra – get a good fitting sports bra to help prevent chafing. ‘
>> Go to Road Runner Sports or another clothing store that can fit you properly and make suggestions on the best sports bra for your body and needs. It’s important that you have the right fit, a quality sports bra and have it adjusted correctly to help prevent chafing. Once you have the best sports bra for your body you can add in anti-chafing glide, but you want to start with minimizing the risk.
I recommend a sports bra with adjustable straps and adjustable back closure.
These are my favorites…
Brooks Sports Bra – Rebound Racer // Brooks Sports Bra – Fine Form
6. Running tops – I’m weird and I like wearing long sleeves to help block the sun. But for races I wear tanks most of the time.
Fast and Fab Long Sleeve Top // Adidas Running Tank Top
7. Running Shorts – post with my favorite running shorts coming soon!! I like Road Runner Sports // Danskin Now // and a few other brands that we’ll chat about next time.
8. Running Socks – low Pro-Compression socks or other sweat wicking workout or sports socks.
Pro Compression Socks // Sports Socks No Show
9. Running Shoes – stick with your favorite running shoes but you might need to take extra care of them if they’re so sweaty and wet. Make sure to dry them out before wearing them for another run to prevent blisters.
Running Tip: Put them in on their sides in front of the fridge to help dry out the sweat.
Brooks Running Shoes Pure Flow 7 // Brooks Running Shoes Launch
10. Fuel or Water Belt – I love the Stay Fit Running Belt because it’s thick and doesn’t bounce or slide. You can use small fuel belt water bottles with it. And I also love a small handheld water bottle that you can refill along the way like the Nathan Speed Shot Handheld.
Hand-held Water Bottle – I love Nathan’s hand held water bottles for long runs or running on a hot day. Plus the lil holder can store fuel or money to buy Starburst at 7-11.

Top 3 Water Bottles for Running Reviews
CamelBak Quick Grip Chill Handheld Water Bottle
The CamelBak Quick Grip Chill Handheld Water Bottle offers cool water in your hands during a tiring run. The pack includes a zippered pouch and the overall weight is only around 40g or 1 oz. The bottle fluid capacity is 21 oz which is still a fairly comfortable weight to carry.
The bottle is insulated which effectively keeps your water cold for a long period. It has a self-sealing JetValve technology that makes it leak proof while giving you a high flow of water. The bottle is easy to squeeze so that you can control the amount of water you want to drink without experiencing splatters.
One drawback that most users find is that the zippered pocket on the bottle carrier doesn’t fit large phones. Despite that, it does an effective job in keeping cards and cash in. Its extra stretch mesh can fit energy gels. It also has a clip for your car keys and an adjustable cinch strap, helping you securely carry your valuables as you run.
The bottle has a patented TruTaste technology and is BPA free which will keep your water clean from start to finish. It has a lightweight ergonomic design that makes it one of the best bottles for runners. This bottle is also one of the bestselling running water bottle on Amazon.

Nathan Insulated QuickShot Plus Flask
The Nathan Insulated QuickShot Plus Flask has a carrying capacity of 300 ml or 10 oz, which is a great carrying weight when running. Despite its small size, it effectively keeps your water cold for 20% longer because of its insulated hydration packs. It offers high vision reflective 360-degree visibility that can make you run safer.
The pack comes with a very comfortable hand strap with a thumbhole. It offers a good grip and requires less effort during running, so you can keep your hands relaxed. The soft flask has a high flow race cap which can give you fast bursts of water for short distances.
While a lot of users find this product useful, some say that it is hard to remove the flask out of the hand strap. Although, it does make up for it by having a nice expandable zippered pocket with a great amount of storage for your keys, cash, cards, and other valuable items.
Unlike the Nathan SpeedDraw Plus Insulated Flask, the QuickShot is smaller in capacity and rounder in shape, so you have to choose between the two if you’ll have a longer or shorter run. Other features are still the same and it’s up to you which one is the better pick.

FuelBelt Helium Sprint Ergonomic Bottle
The FuelBelt Helium Sprint is a 10 oz BPA free ergonomic bottle that is considered one of the lightest running bottles. It comes with a Velcro attachment to keep the padded hand strap secure and comfortable. Because of these notable features, in our opinion this is the best handheld water bottle for ultra running.
The flask has a soft silicone push pull bottle cap that makes it easy to draw water while running. It’s very simple to open it and take a drink without having to stop. It fits very well in the hand and doesn’t leave a plastic taste on the water while it relatively stays cool.
A lot of people vouch for this FuelBelt model although they say that the strap is not detachable. But what’s also great is you get to wash it together with the flask, so you’re sure that the strap is clean after every run.
Overall, this is a very light, compact, and easy to use bottle to bring while running. Despite lacking the good insulation features of a water bottle, it can still keep water cool during your run. And because of its light weight and great features, it is one of the best ultra running handheld bottles in the market.

Criteria for Choosing a Good Water Bottle for Running
Material
The type of material used to make the water bottle is very important in determining whether or not it is suitable for running. The most common materials used are stainless steel, plastic or glass and each type has their pros and cons. The material should be lightweight so that it can be easy enough to carry during running.
Reflectivity
Water bottle meant for running should have a reflective material that can reflect any kind of light. Aside from keeping you safe, this will remind you to hydrate constantly during your run.
Weight and Size
The weight and size of a water bottle are very important factors during running especially if you’re considering a handheld water bottle. Running with a big heavy bottle can be difficult and make you slow down and get more tired easily. You need a water bottle that is lightweight and compact enough to bring with you.
Handheld running bottle can carry around 12 ounces of water, while the 2 to 4 pieces of smaller bottles worn on waist belts can accommodate around 6 ounces of water each. So, when you are out to purchase your bottle, remember that these are the comfortable weights for running bottles.
Cost
There are many different water bottles available in the market and each one can cost differently depending on the features. Bottles with stainless steel material are more expensive compared to plastic. Of course, the more features a bottle has, the more expensive it can be. Buy one that will fit into your budget and with extra features that will benefit you.
Bottle Shape and Handling
Since you’ll be running with your bottle, it should have a bottle holder or carrier that will make it easy to bring. This is like a vest for your bottle where you can fit your hand in easily and also has pockets for other valuable items like phone keys or cards. Other than that, the shape of the bottle should fit nicely in your hand which should add more comfort in carrying.
Mouth Gape
A water bottle can have either a narrow or wide mouth gape and choosing one will depend on the type of activity being done. Narrow mouth gapes are more comfortable when drinking. On the other hand, wide mouth gapes make it easier to put in ice, fruits to infused the water and to clean. But if you can put it in the dishwasher, then a narrower mouth gape is the better option.
Insulation
Some insulated water flasks have double wall features that helps regulate the temperature of the drink inside. This feature makes it great for extreme temperature fluctuations in different locations or weather conditions.
Nozzle
Nozzles are like a straw and work with a push pull snap action. Most nozzle are bite valves which need some pressure from the teeth if you want to get more water. Nozzles with push pull action are great for running and you can control the amount of water that comes out with a press on the bottle.
Different Kinds of Water Bottles
There are different types of water bottles that have different uses depending on the sport activity. For example, a running or jogging water bottle is different from a hiking water bottle. You can find many kinds in the market but here are the most common ones being used.
Glass
Pros:
Doesn’t absorb chemicals or odors, so it keeps your water’s neutral taste
Doesn’t contain harmful sealants
Dishwasher safe
Cons:
They are generally heavy compared to plastic and stainless steel
They can easily break
Can cost more
You need to be cautious
They’re harmful when they break
Stainless Steel
Pros:
Very durable and can withstand wear and tear
The double wall insulation can keep your water cold for a long time
Also keeps water’s neutral taste
Doesn’t contain harmful sealants
BPA free and don’t contain harmful chemicals
Cons:
Can eventually have dents and scratches
Cost more than plastic bottles
Plastic
Pros:
Doesn’t break easily compared to glass
Very light and portable
Usually affordably priced
Available anywhere
Most plastic bottles are BPA free
Cons:
Not biodegradable
Most often not environmentally friendly
Some chemicals used to make plastic are harmful to our health
Which Water Bottle Should You Use?
There are so many bottles to choose from and most of those offer the same function which is to keep you hydrated. But these bottles also have different features that make them specific for different kinds of activities. In choosing running bottles, remember that it should be something lightweight, easy to hold, and can carry the right amount of water for you.
How to Clean the Bottle
Keeping your water bottle clean is very simple. But it’s important to ensure that you clean it well to avoid bacteria from building up. This can prevent your bottle from stinking. Just rinse the bottle with warm water right after using it. Then wash with a bottle brush and mild soap, and thoroughly rinse again with warm water. Let it dry facing down to drain out the water.
Important of Protein Intake
Also, after a strenuous run, microtears occur in your tendons, muscles and other tissues throughout your body, but specifically in your legs. Amino acids found in protein will help to heal and repair the tissues damages.
Protein shakes either the ready-made protein beverages or the powders mix with water or milk can provide a rich dose of these amino acids your body can absorb faster than through whole foods. Besides that, protein also provide many other benefits like reduced inflammation, increased strength exertion and more.
So, it’s vital to take a good amount of protein drink after a run to help your body help faster. Check out some of the best protein shaker bottle you can use to make a quick and delicious protein shake on the go.
Final Thoughts
When you are doing a physical activity such as running, staying hydrated is vital. That’s why the best water bottle for running should be something which you can bring along with you, allowing you to have water anytime during your exercise. If you’re looking for one, then our top 3 picks are highly recommended and they are excellent as marathon water bottles too.
It is good to invest in an affordable, durable, and useful water bottle with features that will benefit your run. Doing strenuous activities can make your body lose a lot of water and keeping yourself hydrated will help you have a balanced electrolyte system to keep your body functioning.

Techniques For Making The Most Of Your Camping Experience.
Camping Made Easy – Try These Proven Tips
Are you contemplating going on a camping adventure for awhile now? Do you think that camping is something that seems out of the field of possibility for you? Well it doesn’t need to be, you may understand how to enjoy an exciting camping adventure with the following advice.
While you are camping, essential to your gear is actually a survival knife. This is the most essential a part of your camping gear. Buy a high quality survival knife, not merely the most affordable you will discover, your lifestyle may depend on it. These knives are all very similar these people have a long blade serrated using one side along with a hollow handle. Inside of the handle you are able to carry fishing line, hooks, a compass, and matches as a small survival kit.
Do you know that an easy mirror will save your way of life? In case you are camping and end up in a survival situation, a straightforward handheld mirror can be used to signal for help many miles away. Tend not to purchase the standard glass mirror, many camping supply stores sell mirrors created from Lexan that may float and are practically unbreakable.
Keep an eye on the climate. Rain or another conditions may impact your travel efforts and your experience in the campsite. Make certain you have gear which is suitable for the weather conditions conditions that you may possibly face. Adjust your departure time as necessary to try and avoid the bulk of the negative weather, when possible.
If you pack up your camp site to visit home, leave a few logs and a few kindling for the upcoming camping group which comes along. When you have ever found your blog after dark, you are aware how tough it could be to find firewood! It’s an incredibly nice pay-it-forward gesture which will probably help out more than imaginable.
Ensure that you pack plenty of extra clothing for your kids. Camping can be messy. Kids love engaging in dirt. Which means that the kids will get dirty in the daytime. It can be nearly impossible to prevent, but luckily, you will not need to worry if you have extra clothes accessible. Keep yourself ready always.
After it is time for you to go to sleep, it may be beneficial to get the coolers which you brought along into your vehicle. Bears are becoming quite savvy nowadays and also have worked out that these coolers usually carry meals which will attract those to your campsite.
Dryer lint makes surprisingly good kindling for starting campfires. Around a month prior to camping, start keeping the lint that you simply clean from your dryer filter. Simply hang a plastic bag near the dryer and stash the lint within the bag since it collects. Using this for your kindling could help you save time trying to find it, and this will work better still than any kindling that you simply do find.
Camping
If you are intending camping along with your pets or children, you need to require a few extra precautions. Make an effort to teach the kids the essentials of camping safety. They camping must know what to do if they get lost and should each possess a small survival kit. Be sure to have leashes for almost any pets and make sure they are current with vaccinations.
When going camping, try and buy non-perishable items to eat. You will find no refrigerators within the wild, so anything you bring should be kept in good order. It is possible to certainly bring a cooler to put food in, but the cooler will be added bulk in your trip. Therefore, make an effort to bring more non-perishable foods than perishable.
Ask a park ranger or even a tour guide to let you know about every one of the places to look at when you are camping. This is an excellent idea so that you know you will get the best from your camping experience, you don’t want to take a camping trip and neglect an exciting experience.
Bring a emergency first aid kit. Camping is fun. It may also be a little dangerous. Always be prepared. Small scrapes and rashes may be especially common in nature. Bring along a crisis emergency first aid kit loaded with anything you might need. You’ll be happy you probably did if something fails.
If you don’t prefer to drink plenty of water, you will be in actual trouble on the long camping trip. Water is essential to staying hydrated, so if you really hate the flavor, purchase some one-use lemonade and combine it with bottles water. This may help you stay hydrated throughout your adventure.
As you now know what it takes to get a good camping trip prepare for many exciting adventures into the future. Use precisely what you learned today about camping to take pleasure from yourself with a great time out of your normal routine of life, as well as to have an experience you’ll always bear in mind

Goldilocks and the 3 Hydration Systems
When it comes to hydration while running I am really really REALLY bad! I am always afraid I’ll have to go to the bathroom, which is why I purposely dehydrate myself before a race. After reaching out to some of my runner friends on social media, they confirmed that I shouldn’t worry about having to go to the bathroom while on a run since you sweat out most of what you drink. Which makes sense.......I just hate the thought of having to use a porta potty! They gross me out big time! Thankfully I’ve only had to use them at 3 of my many races......but I know this number will increase over time.
With the Great Aloha Run coming up I knew I needed to be better about hydrating myself not only before a run, but during. Now here comes the fun part.......figuring out which hydration belt is the best for me!
Up First: SPIbelt
I have been using a basic SPIbelt for probably about 2-3 years and I love it! Doesn’t bounce, holds my iphone and some Kleenex for races just in case there isn’t any toilet paper in the bathroom or porta potty. So when I finally decided to stop being so stubborn about hydration, SPIbelt was my first choice! I made sure to read the reviews on Amazon first, which all seemed pretty positive so I ordered it!
Not even a few seconds in to my run, one of the bottles fell out :( Picked it up off the ground slipped it back on and kept going.........but it popped out again! I was wearing it in front of me, so I decided to turn it around and try running with it on my back.........but the bottles don’t snap shut and water kept splashing all over my back.....which annoyed me. Since this particular run was my first 8 mile trial run, I didn’t want to deal with these bottles and have it mess with my mental focus. So I ran back home and ditched the bottles. Thankfully I was okay hydration wise since I made sure to drink a lot of water earlier that day.
The one awesome thing about Amazon is their return policy! I was able to return this belt with no questions asked! I think the problem for me with the SPIbelt with bottles is that the bottles just clip on. My thighs kept knocking the bottles out since I like to wear my belt lower on my hips.
Up Next: Nathan Trail Mix Plus
After heading back to social media and asking for more advice, I decided to give this Nathan belt a try.
The one thing I do like about this hydration belt is that the bottles sit in a basket and snap close.
For my first trial run with this belt I decided to have the bottles in front of me. It was definitely a bit weird to run 6+ miles with this belt on. Going from a small SPIbelt with just my iPhone to a belt with 2 bottles was interesting. Compared to the SPIbelt hydration I liked the Nathan worked much better......my thighs couldn’t knock the bottles out! The one thing I didn’t really care for was that I couldn’t wear it low on my hips. When I did, the bottles and belt would bounce way too much. So I had to adjust it and wear it right on my stomach.
On my second run with the Nathan belt I had a lot of problems. I’m not sure if it was because I opted to only take 1 bottle with me? I was only doing a 4 mile run and I didn’t want to waste water by filling up 2 bottles. I wanted to use this belt on a few runs before GAR to make sure I really liked it. I felt like no mater where I put the belt, on my hips, on my waist, on my back.........the belt annoyed me. I don’t know if it had to do with the fact that it was really humid that day? I tend to swell up a lot when I run. I think my stomach must have expanded more on this run than the last one.......because the belt was really restricting my waist and breathing. I ended up taking the bottle out and carrying it for the rest of my run.
I am a very distracted runner and the littlest of things can turn my mental focus. So once again, I processed a return with Amazon.
I started to do some research on running hydration vests since I gave up on belts. Since I do swell a lot and majority of these belts are made to wear on your waist and not hips........I figured having something on my back would be a better option.
With my big race being two weeks away, I was really hesitant to order something on Amazon..........plus I was worried that they’d freeze my account if I returned yet another item in a 2 month period! Thankfully there was a 10k race I had signed up for and the packet pickup was at a local running store. I figured it was my best bet to actually see the vest in person and try it on versus taking another risk.
To my surprise my local running store only had 1 hydration belt that was meant for men :( At that point my anxiety kicked into gear over trying to figure out what to do. I started to look at the hand-held bottles and got even more frustrated. I really don’t want to have to carry a bottle for 8 miles! I know some people do love the hand-held bottles, but I am such a sensitive runner I don’t want anything to get in the way of my mental focus.
Thankfully my sister recommended we check out the water-sports store that was right next to the running store. I figured why not! I’ve got nothing to lose at this point. To my surprise they had a good amount of hydration vests which made me very happy!
Third Times The Charm: Camelbak
After trying this vest on I knew I finally found the right one!!!!! I did read a ton of reviews on Amazon prior and most of the female reviewers suggested getting one that has 2 straps in the front. That it helps prevent bouncing. Thankfully this one had 2 straps and it fit like a glove! I did pay a bit more in store than I would have on Amazon, but I was more than happy to support a local business!
I didn’t have time to test this vest out before my 10k race, since I literally bought it the day before. I absolutely love love LOVE this vest! Finally something that doesn’t restrict my stomach while I run! I don’t know if it had to do with being hydrated during this race, but this was the fastest 10k I had run to date!
I did forget that one of the reviewers said not to wear a tank top, that it will chafe you under your arms. I prefer to run in tank tops versus shirts so I had told myself to make sure I put some glide on.........but completely spaced that morning. Unfortunately I did chafe pretty badly under my arms......but thankfully I didn’t feel a thing during the race. As soon as I took the pack off I felt the burn......LOL!
I’m a little bummed that I can’t wear my wonder woman tank that I got especially for GAR, but I’d rather be safe than sorry and chafe again!!!! This past weekend I went for a run with my pack and wore a dri fit shirt instead........no problems at all! Now I am somewhat relax and focus on training for the GAR and not worrying about staying hydrated!
I did pick up a handheld bottle from my local running store as a back up just in case. Tested this one out on a 5 mile run.
Absolutely HATED it! Ended up running back home after a mile and leaving it in my garage. I have such small hands that having to carry something heavy like this put a lot of strain on my wrist.
I will stick to hydration vests from now on :)
4 more days in the Great Aloha Run!!!!!
