According to the French medias what he talked about (Champions league) doesn’t matter what matters is his look (and Arab with a beanie and a beard). They also said he looked like a “Bedouin who time travelled from an other century”. That his presence is a win for “Islamists” (because you know an Arab who is on TV for something else than back stabbing other Arabs is unacceptable). The story ended at the National Assembly and there’s talk about how “people like him” (they say extremists but what they mean is people racialized as Arabs) shouldn’t be allowed in the medias in the future.

EU’s new “European Union Democracy Shield (EUDS)” committee, which aims to impose more control over tech giants now perceived as aligned with US President Trump, and promote their compliance with “hate speech” laws while imposing more “fact-checking” has gained its chair – French member of European Parliament (MEP) and French President Macron-allied politician Nathalie Loiseau.

The EUDS initiative was first unveiled by EU Commission’s Executive VP Henna Virkkunen, and Loiseau appears to have been given the job in true unelected-Brussels-bureaucracy fashion: this was known before a vote on her nomination took place.

“Nathalie Loiseau will be elected this evening at 6 pm,” it was announced early on Monday by La Lettre (this effective appointment has in the meantime been confirmed).

Russian intelligence is using a Serbian agent to infiltrate EU institutions and to spread pro-Kremlin talking points about its invasion of Ukraine, according to a Western intelligence briefing seen by POLITICO.

As recently as October 2023, Serbian national Novica Antić — an active “agent of influence” who knowingly worked closely with Russia’s security agency, according to the documents — held meetings with European officials in Brussels and in particular, Members of the European Parliament.

Those MEPs included German Greens lawmaker Viola von Cramon-Taubadel, Italian Socialists & Democrats lawmaker Alessandra Moretti, and Vladimír Bilčík, a Slovakian member of the conservative European People’s Party Group, according to a press release and a photo seen by POLITICO. There is nothing in the intelligence briefing to suggest that Moretti, Bilčík and von Cramon-Taubadel were aware of Antic’s FSB links when they met with him.

Moretti, Bilčík and von Cramon-Taubadel did not respond to a request for comment from POLITICO.

Antić, the chair of the Serbian Military Trade Union, also met with representatives of the EUROMIL and EPSU trade unions, which represent armed forces personnel and public services employees in the European Union, respectively.

When asked about the meeting with Antić, an EPSU official responded, saying: “A delegation of his union was in Brussels in October, where they met with several MEPs and they were all transparent. The only topic was trade union rights.”

EUROMIL told POLITICO said they reacted strongly to the events in Serbia and rejected any possible ties with the Russian authorities.  EUROMIL President Emmanuel Jacob added “the organization could take the short-term step of temporarily suspending Serbia’s observer status pending clarification.”

According to the Western intelligence briefing seen by POLITICO, Antić is an active “agent of influence” for Russia’s Federal Security Service, known as the FSB.

Antić works closely with an FSB associate named Vyacheslav Kalinin, a Russian national and editor-in-chief of Veteran News, a media website specializing in news for the veterans of the armed forces. An “About us” tab on the website says that Veteran News is an “information partner” of the FSB and the Russian Ministry of Defense, among other branches of Russia’s security forces.

Kalinin did not respond to a request for comment from POLITICO. 

While the intelligence briefing highlights Antić’s actions in particular, it noted Kalinin recruited other people, without specifying how many and within which countries.

Russia is using Serbia as a launchpad for influence operations designed to weaken pro-EU and pro-NATO sentiment inside the country as well as within the European Union, which has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion two years ago. Antić has used his role as head of Serbia’s military union to criticize Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and senior members of the country’s armed forces.

“They took every opportunity to promote Russian propaganda relating to the war in Ukraine,” the briefing said, referring to meetings in Serbia and EU countries.

The news that Antić held meetings inside the European Parliament underscores the body’s vulnerability to state-backed influence operations. Earlier this month, POLITICO revealed spyware was found on the mobile phones of two lawmakers in the European Parliament, including former French Europe minister Nathalie Loiseau, who chairs the body’s defense subcommittee. 

Antić and his representatives did not respond to a request for comment from POLITICO.

Kalinin invited Antić to Russia to meet with senior Russian military officials between 2019 and 2020. Initially focused on influencing Serbian civil society, the pair have since widened their focus to include European trade union and veterans’ organizations and, in recent months, members of the European Parliament.

Antić, an outspoken critic of Serbia’s armed forces who has fallen afoul of the country’s political leadership, is currently being detained on unspecified charges, according to news website Balkan Insight.

According to Balkan Insight, Antić has been dismissed from Serbia’s military twice over the past five years. He has, per the publication, gone on a hunger strike to protest his detention. A lawyer for Antić declined to specify to Balkan Insight on what charges he was being held.

C’est sur ces mots, qui sonnent presque comme un avertissement à la jeunesse, que Jacques Brel termine sa chanson « Jaurès ». Après que le président de la République Emmanuel Macron ait émis l’hypothèse d’un envoi de troupes au sol en Ukraine et alors que le 31 Juillet prochain nous commémorerons le cent dixième anniversaire de l’assassinat du fondateur de l’Humanité, on est en droit de se demander « que reste-t-il de l’héritage de Jean Jaurès » ?

Depuis février 2022 et l’invasion de l’Ukraine par la Russie, les discours va-t-en guerre sont omniprésents sur les différents plateaux de télévision. Chaque jour, éditorialistes, politiciens et autres éminences grises se pressent derrière les micros pour affirmer, comme dans une œuvre de George Orwell que « la guerre c’est la paix ». De ce fait, toute volonté pacifiste est vue comme de la complaisance à l’égard du despote Vladimir Poutine et tous ceux qui souhaitent trouver une solution diplomatique à cette guerre sanglante sont renvoyés à 1938 et aux accords de Munich. Pour certains, comme Nathalie Loiseau, tête de liste Renaissance aux élections européennes de 2019, l’implication de la France et de l’Union Européenne dans cette guerre est inévitable, presque souhaitable afin de prévenir une possible globalisation du conflit.

Mais si aujourd’hui bon nombre de va-t-en guerre se plaisent à comparer ce qui se passe actuellement en Ukraine aux prémices de la seconde guerre mondiale, on se garde bien de faire le moindre parallèle avec la première. Anatole France écrivait dans l’Humanité du 18 Juillet 1922 « On croit mourir pour la patrie on meurt pour des industriels » une phrase qui n’est pas sans faire écho à la situation actuelle, car depuis maintenant deux ans, les seuls qui ont su tirer leur épingle du jeu, ce sont les 1% les plus riches, ceux qui en France ont, malgré la crise, pu distribuer 80,1 milliards d'euros aux actionnaires au mois de juin 2023. Sans surprise, les discours va-t-en guerre servent avant tout les intérêts des profiteurs de guerre.

"Assez des va-t-en guerre !"

L'idée n'est certainement pas de relativiser ou, moins encore, d'occulter l'indiscutable responsabilité de Vladimir Poutine : c'est lui et son gouvernement qui ont déclenché la guerre en Ukraine. Dans les circonstances dramatiques où les victimes de la guerre en Europe et ailleurs sont contraintes de vivre, il s’agit de souligner la mission et le rôle de la communauté internationale et donc de la France qui, au lieu de souhaiter l'anéantissement d'un camp par l'autre, doivent s'atteler à une t��che difficile mais indispensable, afin de mettre autour d'une table Vladimir Poutine et Volodymyr Zelensky pour parvenir à une paix juste et durable.

Il en va de même au Proche Orient est d'ailleurs avec le risque prégnant d’un génocide à Gaza. Depuis plusieurs mois, les chefs d’états de pays comme le Brésil, le Mexique ou l’Afrique-du-Sud se sont portés volontaires, pour jouer un rôle de médiateurs entre l'Ukraine et la Russie et travailler à la mise en place d’un accord de paix, mais l’Union Européenne et les Etats Unis n’ont pas pris leurs propositions au sérieux.

En France, du haut de ses vingt-sept ans, Léon Deffontaines, candidat communiste aux élections européennes affirmait « assez des va-t-en guerre ! Assez des bellicistes de tous bords ! Nous devons prôner la paix et rien que la paix ». Alors non, le combat pacifiste de Jean Jaurès n’a pas été oublié, il est bien vivant et comme le disait le natif de Castre, l'affirmation de la Paix reste le plus grand des combats.

Dans son immense majorité la jeunesse est contre la guerre ! Et par jeunesse, j’entends aussi la jeunesse russe, puisqu’en décembre 2023, Le Monde nous apprenait que près de 100 000 russes avaient fui en Arménie pour éviter la mobilisation. En ce début d’année 2024, Get Lost, une association qui aide les déserteurs russes à quitter le pays, révélait qu’en un an, les cas de désertions ont été multipliés par dix. Preuve que la Guerre injuste lancée par Vladimir Poutine est loin de faire l’unanimité au sein de la population.

The European Union and NATO are questioning Hungary’s allegiance after it sent a foreign minister to a joint security summit with Russia, Syria, and Belarus. Hungary’s position in both the EU and NATO has repeatedly been undermined as the current government has attempted to remain neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war.

“The Hungarian government never wastes an opportunity to shame us,” said Nathalie Loiseau, a French MEP from the Renew Europe group who sits on the Parliament’s foreign affairs committee. “In French, we say ‘when you cross boundaries, there are no limits,’” said Camille Grand, a former NATO assistant secretary-general. “Extremely troubling,” he added.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has taken numerous trips to Moscow amid the ongoing war. He used his last trip to discuss Hungary’s ongoing fuel war with Ukraine. “Hungary’s secure and affordable gas supply is not possible” without cooperation with Russia, “whether we like it or not.” The EU sided with Ukraine over Hungary, further pushing the nation away from the alliance.

President Viktor Orban infamously met with Putin while acting as the president of the Council of the EU, solidifying his position as an enemy of his own bloc. Yet, the European Union is far from an actual union. Those at the top in Brussels make the decisions, and everyone is expected to adhere blindly. Viktor Orbán of Hungary has long fallen out of favor with the European Union for opposing the war in Ukraine.

Orban has voted to withhold aid from Ukraine in the past. He recently came out and accused the EU of installing a puppet government in Poland. He no longer trusts his European allies, and the feeling is mutual. Yet, there is no current method for banishing a member from the European Union.

The curious aspect of this is that Hungary feels it needs security. From whom?
