Y/n POV

"Hmmph" I hear my girlfriend, Natasha groan as she scrolls on her phone. We were sitting on a couch in the main living room area in the Avenger's Compound. There was no one else in the room with us, they were all doing their own thing. Both me and Natasha were on our phones, sitting next to each other. Well, more like she was sitting on top of me, cuddling into me. 

"What's wrong baby?" I ask knowing that something is up. She still doesn't look up from her phone and continues to scroll. 

"Why do people have to be so mean? I just posted a new photo on instagram of the two of us, and so many of the comments are about how short I am compared to you." She complains.

I look down at her and brush her hair with my fingers. Sure she is only 5'3" and I am 5'9", but that didn't cause any problems in our relationship. I found it very cute when she asks me to grab something off the top shelf, or when she had to reach up to kiss me. "It's ok. Just ignore what they're saying. It doesn't matter. All that matters is what you and I think. They're all just haters who just have something mean to say. They probably just have something that they don't like about themselves, so they just take it out in the easiest way possible. Don't listen to them. I love you just the way you are."

"Thanks y/n. I love you too. You always know how to help me." She says as she snuggles into me even more.

"Now let's turn that phone off and just cuddle, okay? How does that sound."

"That sounds good." She says, handing me her phone. I take our phones and put them on the side table next to the couch. As she tucks her head into my neck, Wanda walks in, laughing. 

"Oh my god! Natasha, you look so short next to y/n! Hahahaha! Shorty!" Wanda says while laughing her ass off. She comes over and sits down on a chair across from us. She is looking at her phone, presumably at the photo Nat posted earlier of the two of us. I feel Nat shift next to me,  obviously uncomfortable. Before I can say anything, Wanda shows her phone to us, pointing to the height difference. 

"See! Even the camera captures just how short you are Natasha. You're like the shortest on the team. Everyone just towers over you." Wanda says as she laughs some more.

"Wanda, would you stop? This isn't funny." I say sternly, giving Wanda a harsh look. 

"But Natasha is so fun to tease. It's so funny when she gets mad and she stomps around because she's so small and it's just like watching a little kid." Wanda says.

Wanda should be scared now. Not only has she made fun of my girlfriend, but she made fun of the kindest, best, most amazing person in the world. Nat sits there, looking at Wanda with shock, obviously hurt, but too scared to cry in front of anyone else besides me. I move Nat's legs off my lap, give her head a quick kiss on her forehead, and stand up from the couch. 

"Wanda, take back what you said." I say, standing in front of her, my hands in fists.

She looks down at my hands and back up at my eyes. I'm taller than her so she has to look up at me. She steps closer to me. "And what if I don't?" She questions.

"Then you'll regret it." I say, my hands starting to glow white a little and my eyes starting to turn purple. 

"Ok ok, I take it back. I don't mean anything I said." She says, but mumbles the last part.

"And" I say, expecting an apology.

"I'm sorry" She says sarcastically and rolls her eyes.

"Wanda." I say seriously.

"I'm sorry ok! I really didn't mean it! I'm just bored and Vision is busy and I need something to do." Wanda said. "So I went online and found this and thought it'd be funny to come and tease Natasha. I really actually do like the photo. It's a really good pic of the two of you."

I can tell that she really means it. I'm not quite ready to forgive her yet, but I say my thanks and stand in front of the couch that Nat is on. I offer her my hand and she takes it. I led her up to our shared bed room silently. There we stayed for the rest of the night, watching movies and eating snacks. Nat is being really soft today, which is a side of her that I don't normally get to see.

A/N: I have nothing against Wanda, I just needed someone to be in the story for this. Wanda is one of my favorites.

Authors Note: Happy birthday @bobfloydsbabe! This is the dumbest thing I've ever written and it also sucks but it has your favourite lil dude in it and I love you! I hope you've had a great birthday! Enjoy this insanely weird drabble.

“You should really read it.” 

Bob sighed, rubbing a hand across his face. “Sweetheart, I’m not reading Twilight with you.” 

His girlfriend pouted from the corner of the couch, aiming a kick against his shin. “But you liked the films.” 

“No, I said I thought they weren’t bad. I never said I liked them.” They had watched all of the films a weeknight ago, which Bob initially had only done to please her. 

“And you said the films were better than the books.” Bob argued, reaching over to right the blanket covering her body as it had half fallen to the floor. 

“Yes but I still think you should read the books.” She said, crossing her arms across her chest. 

“I will go out and get you your favourite food, two new books, a new notepad and pencils if you don’t make me read the books.” Bob placated, hoping that it would satisfy her. 

She looked thoughtful, eyebrows drawing together as she contemplated his offer. 

“Which books?

Bob smiled, knowing he was winning. “Whichever you want, darling.” 

She stared at him for another moment before tossing the blanket aside to cuddle into his side. 

“I want Pho, I don’t have the last two books of ASOIAF and please get me a A4 notebook, not A5,” she paused momentarily, hand splayed against his abdomen, “and cuddles please.”

He pressed a kiss to her forehead, slouching slightly so she could get more comfortable. “Yes ma’am.” 

The rain was smattering against windows, the sun setting just behind the tree line they could see from their backyard. 

Ever since  Bob had found out he was going to be stationed permanently in San Diego, they decided to get a house and set down some roots. 

“I love you, even if you don’t want to read Twilight with me.” She whispered against his T-shirt, making Bob laugh. She soon joined in and they giggled together for a few moments before once again settling into the couch. 

“I love you too. Do you want Pho from the place close to base or the other one?” 

She hummed, eyes falling shut as she snuggled into his side. “Base please.” 

Bob waited a few minutes before her breathing evened out and then gently untangled himself from her embrace. 

After making sure she was properly tucked in for her nap, he grabbed his keys and wallet. He had a promise to make good on. 

Next Day

“Dude, you should read them though, they’re actually pretty good. Not the writing but the story. Love triangle, vampires, werewolves and hybrid babies.” Rooster said through a mouthful of scrambled eggs. 

Phoenix snorted, rolling her eyes. “Not the most intriguing introduction, Roos.” 

Bob watched as they jabbed back and forth, pushing his food around on his plate. 

Hangman and Coyote sat down with their trays, interrupting the squabble happening across from Bob. 

“What’s up?” Javy asked. 

“Are you team Edward or team Jacob?” Rooster asked, completely serious. 

Coyote’s eyebrows shot up, mouth pressed into a tight line. “Dude, are you talking about Twilight?” 

“Yes! Bob watched the films with his girl and he doesn't want to read the books but I think they’re pretty good and Nat says they’re crap and now we gotta decide what team.” Bradley rambled, earning another smack to the side. 

Javy stared them both down, an unimpressed look on his face. “I don’t like fantasy.” 

“WHAT? Dishonour on you, dishonour on your family, dishonour on your cow!” Rooster dramatically gasped, clutching at his chest. 

The entire table rolled their eyes at their teammates' dramatics, all of them now used to Bradley’s antics. 

“Okay fine. I didn’t care enough to choose a team, the films were good and I’ve already read the books but don’t tell my girlfriend that. She’ll never let me live it down.” Bob spoke up, making Bradley smile. 

“I knew it. Everyone has read those books, except Javy here, apparently.” Rooster announced proudly, reaching across the table to fist bump Bob. 

“I personally am Team Bella. Neither Edward or Jacob were good for her. Jacob was an immature kid, not his fault, it’s just his character and Edward had issues. Real issues. The best thing for her would have been to get the hell out of Forks and work on becoming her own person.” 

The entire table fell silent, staring at Jake who didn’t even look up from his plate. No one spoke for a few beats before Bradley began clapping like a seal, shit eating grin in place. 

Bob shook his head as he reached for his phone, texting his girlfriend. She would enjoy the currently bizarre conversation that was taking place and maybe he could get out of book club if he mentioned that apparently both Rooster and Hangman were fans of the series. 

Hangman and Rooster like Twilight. 

Make them bring food and the books next time you invite them over. 

PS, you’re still gonna read the books with me, pls. 

Damn, he really thought he’d gotten away with reading the darn books again. 

If you and I are going to have a book club, no one else is welcome. 

How come??

Club activities are strictly taking place in the bedroom. 

He sent off the last text quickly, before pocketing his phone and turning back to the conversation. 

He didn’t receive an answer until he was scheduled to fly. There was a short message and a picture attached. 

Fine. 

And beneath the text was a picture partially obscuring the view of what seemed to be his girlfriend’s favourite lingerie set and all four books of the series. 

Bob couldn’t wait to go home.

Harpy AU part 1 (3/7)

Today, I’ll be talking about my Beetlejuice Harpy AU. This one will be split up into two parts, the first part explaining the story itself, and the second part talking all about fun harpy stuff that will realistically never be talked about in the actual story. @possum-quesadilla

Inspo: A character ai chat, the KREE series by scribble_mama on tiktok.

Basic plot:

Shilo (an OC), has been hunting down Beetlejuice (who is a harpy) for eight years. She eventually finds him and brings him back to her secluded cabin in the woods to study him. The two of them bond and eventually date. However, Shilo isn’t the only one who was tracking Beetlejuice down. His mother, Juno, has been searching for him for a while, and she won't rest until she gets him back.

Keep in mind that this information is mainly just for the first story. I’m working on the sequel for it, but I haven’t posted any chapters yet. Maybe I’ll make a part three just for talking about those sequel characters…

Character stuff:

Shilo

She/her

She’s 25. She’s always struggled to fit in, both with her peers and with her family. She ended up running away after a falling out with her parents, and she hasn’t returned home since. She is neurodivergent, and struggles a lot with social skills and obsession. Sometimes she gets so focused on one thing, she forgets to take care of herself. However, she’s also very strong, skilled, and independent. She’s very creative. She can also be rather stubborn, which can benefit or hurt her, depending on the situation.

Beetlejuice

He/him

He’s not completely sure how old he is, but he thinks it’s around 600 years. 

He’s not great in social situations. After having to live and deal with Juno and her abuse for so long, he hatched (pun intended) a plan to run away. He ended up getting caught, and as a result, he murdered Juno. He was on the run for a while after that, and eventually ended up in the forests of Vermont, where he stayed for a while. Then Shilo caught him. He’s got a lot of family issues, with his mom being abusive and neglectful and his dad being absent. He’s got some anger issues and a lot of trauma around fire.

Juno

She/her

She’s around 620 years old. 

Though female harpies are generally stronger and larger in this au, Juno was a runt. This caused her to be shunned by her flock members, as power and respect is given based on strength and size in her flock. She always felt that she deserved more. Juno, before her transformation, was a forest floor harpy and a member of the Canis Minor flock.

One night, she was approached by a demon (I won't name him for now) who promised that he’d grant her power, fame, and respect in exchange for her sleeping with him and keeping him company. She accepted, and the demon granted her phoenix powers. She could create and manipulate fire, she had a significantly longer life span (the average lifespan of a female harpy being around 200-250 years), she had stronger wings and sharp claws, and she could shapeshift. She was given very bright, warm feathers, which stood out and drew attention in her generally green environment. 

However, the power she had got to her head. She became abusive towards her demonic partner, who decided to match her energy. Neither of them were good to each other. Eventually, the time came for harpies to battle for the spot of leader (I’ll talk more about that after this). Juno took everyone down and became leader of the flock. Due to her unique powers, she didn’t give up her position until Beetlejuice killed her. Then her newest partner, Nat, took over. He’s currently the flock leader. 

Some fun facts about this AU because I need to talk about it:

Shilo is bisexual! It doesn’t get talked about much, unfortunately :( Beetlejuice is pansexual in this one.

Juno and Beetlejuice are the only ones of their kind, with Juno being the only phoenix harpy and Beetlejuice being the only phoenix/demon harpy.

Beetlejuice’s nest is based off of Iguazu Falls. I’d recommend looking it up, it’s a very beautiful place! May write a little story one day where Beetlejuice and Shilo go to his nest.

This AU is 9 months old today! 

This is the only AU that currently has fics for it. The fics are Birds of a Feather and Flock Together. FT hasn’t been posted yet. When I was writing BoaF, I knew I wanted a sequel called Flock Together.

If you haven’t already guessed, this is my favorite AU, followed very closely by the necromancy AU, which I’ll be talking about soon.

There are two characters taken from the cartoon in this AU— Nat and Donny, ToonJuice’s dad and brother. In this story, Nat is Beetlejuice’s step dad and Donny is his half brother. He hates both of them. They aren’t parts of the main story.

I had the sudden idea of Phos, Nyx, Deia and Thana living. What if they'd survived the gods war? When Unir freed Orsus they turned around and told how to bind the other four?? 👀

Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).
