Apa punya ashabiyah lah puak ni..Orang kata rasis Marah.. Jahatnya mereka..Kes tu tahun 2017, Tahun Pemerintahan UMNO.. PAS semua benda nak kaitkan, Salahkan DAP..salahkan PH..
- f/bk
Tok imam calon Tanjung Piai...
'Calon Bersatu dah 66, harap tahun depan tiada PRK lagi' - Hasni
(PAS lain lah, tak kisah walau siapa pun calon BN, mereka tetap laung takbir dan kira hari bila nak masuk syurga).
Gerakan juga tumpang sekaki...
Haji Zubir di Kampung Chokoh dekat Tanjong Bin cerita, orang UMNO cakap je nak bela Melayu... Padahal dalam PRU yg lepas, bila Dr Farid menang mengalahkan calon Cina BN, Ada orang UMNO yang tak makan selama 3 hari sebab terlalu marah, kecewa, sedih sampai tak lalu makan... Kenapa? Sebab selama ni kamu duk jerit Melayu! Melayu! Itulah risikonya... Kerana apa? Kerana semua orang tahu UMNO rasis dan anti kaum lain dan anti orang agama lain.... Sampai lancarkan kempen BMF bersama PAS. Perlu diingat, pengundi Cina di sini 47%... Besar tu.... UMNO nak kata apa? Nak main lagi isu perkauman? Silakan....- f/bk
Roti in MILO: The Politics of Malaysia...
M is for Malaysia. One columnist affirmed let M, the documentary, not be a "Mistake". When 83 per cent of Malaysians turned up to vote on May 9 2018, the popular will of the people was M and A. In corporate language, M and A would be "Mergers and Acquisition”, sometimes with the goal to strip the acquired corporate entity bare, to increase the value of the stock and share holder. Everyone gets a dividend, and the CEO gets a pay bump and bonus too. But this form of M and A is terrible to the plight of the workers; especially when practised on Malaysia. Pakatan Harapan believed in M and A —- —- precisely because the kleptocracy of then Prime Minister Najib Razak was indeed triggering a rot in the country. Malaysia, for the lack of better word, was becoming worse than Zimbabwe led by the late President Mugabe. M should not be the politics and dietary habit of Milo: the practice of many Malaysians, every morning without fail, of dipping their roti into the warm but sweet cup of drink. Not only will the roti become soggy, but the sugary intake that goes into the drink, will destroy the health of the consumer over the medium and long term. Pakatan Harapan was not stirred and shaken into a coalition of various parties to be a MILO. M = Malaysia = My country = My home = My birthplace = My very peace of mind, period. M, rightly or wrongly, has become the "murmurs" of the people. If this state of affair is allowed to persist, M would make Malaysia a calcified cup of MILO which is useless too. When Pakatan Harapan was formed, prior to the 14th general election, it specialized in "listening to the people".
youtube
When asked by legions of journalist, as far back as 2016, as to why Tun Dr Mahathir, was returning to politics, his answer was cryptic: "Many showed up at my home or office in Perdana Leadership Foundation, and spoke of the errors and corrosive effects of corruption." I must admit I was one of them who met Tun Dr Mahathir at his home, way before even the Deklarasi Rakyat. After explaining descriptively what is plaguing the nation then, especially the kleptocracy and the impact to the people and the nation, I suggested four things : 1. Establish a new Malay based political party to take on UMNO. 2. The new Malay base party must have 5 core principles : Reforms, Justice, Moderation, Inclusiveness and Progressive. 3. Form an unimaginable new coalition with KeAdilan, DAP, Amanah and whoever wants to fight kleptocracy and save the nation. 4. The requirement of great amount of magnanimity from all leaders in the opposition to forget the past and chart the future together. Credit to Tun Mahathir, he listened attentively, as always and I was called subsequently to the first technical committee for the Deklarasi Rakyat. The rest is history. M and A, some would like to say, can lead to Azmin Ali, the Minister of Economic Affairs becoming the next Prime Minister. But then if this is the case, it would have destroyed the transition promised to the people. Malaysians did not wake up in large droves to support Azmin Ali then. Not forgetting Azmin Ali preferred Pakatan Rakyat to the the birth of Pakatan Harapan, against the nomination of Tun Mahathir as the Chairman of PH and eventually as the PH Prime Minister candidate. Things have changed these days. One must also not forget how Dr Wan Azizah stood by the PH promise and commitment to ensure Tun Mahathir is made the Prime Minister, although the then King offered her the PM position post GE14 election results due to KeAdilan securing the highest number of Parliamentary seat, even beyond DAP, Amanah and Bersatu.
Drama Empat Sekawan
Pakatan Harapan should operate like what the old RTM drama called "Empat Sekawan". It was a drama based on a group of Chinese speaking in various dialects way back in 1970s. Yet the drama struck a chord among Malaysians as the "four friends". One of the leading actresses, Madam Lai Meng, is still alive. Surely she would urge all Malaysians to unite. M is neither for mistake not the politics of MILO. When a drink is too sweet, and the sugary content is delivered into our body without fail, it enters into our blood stream as glucose. But too much of anything is bad. The politics of MILO —- of trying to brew Pakatan Harapan, into something which it is not —- should cease and desist. M and A is based on written transition. Not one but two. Any attempts to dilute the strength of Pakatan Harapan by 2023 will lead to its collapse by then, if not already. M is not for money, to those with special vested interest, one should remember too. M is for a triumphant Malaysia from now and beyond. M, interestingly, could also be for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin; the one who kept urging all sides to remain calm, and patience, to allow the promised transition to each forward. M is for promised, front-ward motion; not back tracking. Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin, as always, been the unifying factor of PH with his wisdom, without much pomp and grandeur, always refocusing the coalition to work to deliver what all Malaysian wants. - Dr. Rais Hussin

Hindu ascetics lead millions of Indians in holy bath, but politics weigh
PRAYAGRAJ, India (Reuters) – Millions of pilgrims began bathing on the first official day of India’s Kumbh Mela on Tuesday, the world’s largest religious festival where politics play an important role ahead of a general election later this year.
Naga Sadhus or Hindu holy men take a dip during the first “Shahi Snan” (grand bath) at “Kumbh Mela” or the Pitcher Festival, in Prayagraj, previously known as Allahabad, India, January 15, 2019. REUTERS/Danish Siddiqui
During the eight-week festival at Prayagraj in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, up to 150 million people, including a million foreign visitors, are expected to bathe at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna, and a mythical third river, the Saraswati.
More than 18 million pilgrims led by naked, ash-smeared ascetics had entered the grounds by 1600 local time (1130 GMT) on Tuesday, said a spokesman for the Kumbh Mela Adhikari, the main organizing committee.
This time there is so much more space,” he said. “All indications are this will be bigger than the last Kumbh.”
Estimating crowd numbers at the site, two thirds the size of Manhattan, is difficult, and the official did not say how the committee had arrived at the figure.
However, if the trend continues, it would be the largest ever Kumbh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, which governs the state, sees a successful festival as a way to burnish its credentials as a defender of the Hindu faith.
Giant cardboard cutouts of Modi, who faces a tough test in a general election due by May, adorned the sacred site.
“Modi is a good man,” said Varun K Seth, a saffron-clad priest who gestured at a figure of Modi. “He is watching over us.”
Devout Hindus believe bathing in the waters of the Ganges absolves people of sins and at the time of the Kumbh Mela, or the “festival of the pot”, it brings salvation from the cycle of life and death.
A highlight is the appearance of the Naga sadhus, or ascetics, who worship Shiva and bathe on the first day.
Many sadhus belong to monastic orders called Akharas and some live in remote caves, stepping out for the Kumbh Mela, generally held once every three years in four cities.
Shortly before dawn on Tuesday, the first ascetics, the Panchayati, plunged into the water amid cries of “har har Mahadev”, or “everyone is Mahadev”, another name for Shiva.
“It is out of this world,” said Seth. “When you get in the water, you feel like you are alive.”
Members of the largest monastic order at the festival, the Juna Akhara, raced down to the water carrying tridents and spears as police held back throngs of spectators.
“The river gives us immortality,” said a naked sadhu from the Juna Akhara as he covered his body in ash after bathing.
POLITICAL FLAVOR
Modi’s chief minister in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, a firebrand Hindu priest pictured on billboards across the city, has championed policies that play to the BJP’s core Hindu base.
This year he transformed a smaller Ardh, or “half” Kumbh Mela, into a full version of the festival. He also replaced the Muslim names of several cities with Hindu names – including Prayagraj, which was Allahabad until October.
“Yogi is a great leader who cares for the people,” said Kuldeep Banderi, a pilgrim from Delhi. “If this Kumbh is Ardh think what the next will be like.”
The BJP lost power in three states in assembly elections in December, and want to avoid a similar result during the general election in Uttar Pradesh, a state of 220 million people where a strong showing can often decide the outcome.
For the first time at the Kumbh Mela, a transgender ashram known as the Kinnar Akhara and led by rights activist Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from Mumbai, joined the first bathing day.
India legalized gay sex in September, but the LGBT community still faces prejudice in the deeply religious country.
Slideshow (12 Images)
Members of the Kinnar Akhara received a police escort to the bathing site, where Tripathi plunged into the waters fully clothed to the cheers of her followers.
The festival has its roots in a Hindu tradition that says the god Vishnu wrested a golden pot containing the nectar of immortality from demons.
In a 12-day fight for possession, four drops fell to earth, in the cities of Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik, which now share the Kumbhs.

In 1935, Ambedkar was appointed principal of the Government Law College, Bombay, a position he held for two years. He also served as the chairman of Governing body of Ramjas College, University of Delhi, after the death of its Founder Shri Rai Kedarnath. Settling in Bombay (today called Mumbai), Ambedkar oversaw the construction of a house, and stocked his personal library with more than 50,000 books. His wife Ramabai died after a long illness the same year. It had been her long-standing wish to go on a pilgrimage to Pandharpur, but Ambedkar had refused to let her go, telling her that he would create a new Pandharpur for her instead of Hinduism’s Pandharpur which treated them as untouchables. At the Yeola Conversion Conference on 13 October in Nasik, Ambedkar announced his intention to convert to a different religion and exhorted his followers to leave Hinduism. He would repeat his message at many public meetings across India. In 1936, Ambedkar founded the Independent Labour Party, which contested the 1937 Bombay election to the Central Legislative Assembly for the 13 reserved and 4 general seats, and secured 11 and 3 seats respectively. Ambedkar published his book Annihilation of Caste on 15 May 1936. It strongly criticised Hindu orthodox religious leaders and the caste system in general, and included “a rebuke of Gandhi” on the subject. Later, in a 1955 BBC interview, he accused Gandhi of writing in opposition of the caste system in English language papers while writing in support of it in Gujarati language papers. Ambedkar served on the Defence Advisory Committee and the Viceroy’s Executive Council as minister for labour. After the Lahore resolution (1940) of the Muslim League demanding Pakistan, Ambedkar wrote a 400 page tract titled Thoughts on Pakistan, which analysed the concept of “Pakistan” in all its aspects. Ambedkar argued that the Hindus should concede Pakistan to the Muslims. He proposed that the provincial boundaries of Punjab and Bengal should be redrawn to separate the Muslim and non-Muslim majority parts. He thought the Muslims could have no objection to redrawing provincial boundaries. If they did, they did not quite “understand the nature of their own demand”. Scholar Venkat Dhulipala states that Thoughts on Pakistan “rocked Indian politics for a decade”. It determined the course of dialogue between the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress, paving the way for the Partition of India. In his work Who Were the Shudras?, Ambedkar tried to explain the formation of untouchables. He saw Shudras and Ati Shudras who form the lowest caste in the ritual hierarchy of the caste system, as separate from Untouchables. Ambedkar oversaw the transformation of his political party into the Scheduled Castes Federation, although it performed poorly in the 1946 elections for Constituent Assembly of India. Later he was elected into the constituent assembly of Bengal where Muslim League was in power. Ambedkar contested in the Bombay North first Indian General Election of 1952, but lost to his former assistant and Congress Party candidate Narayan Kajrolkar. Ambedkar became a member of Rajya Sabha, probably an appointed member. He tried to enter Lok Sabha again in the by-election of 1954 from Bhandara, but he placed third (the Congress Party won). By the time of the second general election in 1957, Ambedkar had died. Ambedkar also criticised Islamic practice in South Asia. While justifying the Partition of India, he condemned child marriage and the mistreatment of women in Muslim society. No words can adequately express the great and many evils of polygamy and concubinage, and especially as a source of misery to a Muslim woman. Take the caste system. Everybody infers that Islam must be free from slavery and caste. […] [While slavery existed], much of its support was derived from Islam and Islamic countries. While the prescriptions by the Prophet regarding the just and humane treatment of slaves contained in the Koran are praiseworthy, there is nothing whatever in Islam that lends support to the abolition of this curse. But if slavery has gone, caste among Musalmans [Muslims] has remained.
POLITICAL CAREER OF BHIMRAO RAMJI AMBEDKAR : In 1935, Ambedkar was appointed principal of the Government Law College, Bombay, a position he held for two years.

Togetherness of 80’s!
Looking forward ….
A Small Group Activity turned to be BIG ‘event’, no sooner! About, 12 months before, Sanjay, Govind & other likeminded friends decided to have a monthly small get-together to share the joy of life, while standing on threshold of Sr Citizenship. Yes, most of us were born around 1960. And it was in 1978, we all met in BYK College to pursue our commerce graduation. Coming from various schools, we become Class-mats. This group of around 240 was sharing common joy, fun & ventures viz. not-attending the class, harassing Professors, passing the time at Canteen & loitering in college campus. However, College election bonded us more. Alternatively, we all, girls included, enjoyed our teenage, in group. The association was wide & deep, resulted into love & affection towards each other. When we left the college, everyone was in oblivion, as to, how the future is going to be? We gave a last exam paper of TY B Com & left with huge baggage of fond memories. We never parted systematically, meaning, bidding a fair-well to each other, formally. At an individual level, we were unique, but we shared common experience (of full nonsense, to an extent). This is nothing exceptional & I am sure this must be happening year after year, for all students.
On 23rd March 2018, after lapse of 37 years, about 50% of classmates are meeting in Nasik. A monthly get-together is organized by Rajgopal, Subhash, Sanjay & Govind. It has been widely acknowledged with zeal & enthusiasm. A thought crossed my mind – as if all classmates were waiting to be called by Organizers?! Even on the eve of 22nd March 2018, attendance is spiraling up & preference of food / liquor being taken care of. This is not a mean achievement. This time we all were meeting after having crossed the ‘adulthood’ – middle age (span of 20yrs to 60 yrs). Indeed, this is going to be convergence of all walks of life, however forgetting about what happed in life. We all are eager to become nostalgic. Someone very well said:
उम्र की चादर खींच कर उतार देते हैं ये कम्बख़्त दोस्त , कभी बूढ़ा नहीं होने देते हैं
दोस्तों से बातें किया करो जनाब , ये वो हकीम हैं जो अल्फाज़ से इलाज कर देते हैं..
To add the spice or to enhance the value of get-together, our the then ‘Principal‘ is also invited. Now I can see the picture of tomorrow & bit concerned about cocktail of ‘Principal, Liquor & Girls’. To quench my anxiety, I posted following on the group - Arvind & Organizers, agenda is well thought & presented. Excellent initiative to gather more than 125 ex’1980 B Com’s. It’s an achievement. Now attending folks, we all have a ‘shared task‘ to make this event ‘unique’, successful beyond comprehension. We have crossed our teenage long ago & now we are standing on the threshold of Sr Citizenship. We have to shoulder additional critical responsibility to respond each other gracefully & enhance the value ‘hidden’ in this unique gat-together, become nostalgic. My memories are afresh of Division B’s get-together held on 29th Feb 1980 at Chitpawan Mangal Karyalaya. Let’s create another wave of lasting memories. And the beginning could be, arriving at Hall 5 minutes before 5pm. I am excited, are YOU? Welcome to झपूर्झा moments! Moment of Creativity! *
Now I am looking forward to.
Looking backward
On 23rd Morning, a Good Morning call from Host, Sanjay & Govind, was received to ORDER that ‘I shall be the event anchor’. Without any hesitation, I said ‘Yes‘ as I wanted to support the event. Having, vast experience in managing the event, I was aware that a good event can go bad no sooner it starts & masses just get quarantined from the event. I prepared well & brought in lot of ‘relevance’ for my ensuing friends. I wanted, we all travel in time – backwards. Helping them to be sentimental, yearning & nostalgic.
At the hall, sharp at 5, we all were welcomed by host, personally. The environment started becoming magical. All of a sudden, someone stands in front of me & asks ‘have you recognized me? & then the ritual of surprise, happiness etc. follows. By 6 pm, almost 90% hall was full. The environment was electrified with oh’s, awe’s. Happiness was flowing while hugging from heart to heart. The girls are not exception. The time was stopped after 38 years of separation. Meeting with every acquaintance was compelling us to travel back in time & recalling the fun we had. Memories of those days of 1977/80, were dazzling & striking.
At about 6-30 pm, stage got ‘decorated’ by presence of beloved Principal & we started formal part of event, seeking the blessings from teacher. Dr. Gosavi Sir, at 85, spoke eloquently for almost for an hour. His articulation was persuasive, letting us to know what we should be doing after the age of 60 & how to discharge the social responsibility. Rapt attention was provided to the spellbound speech. For me it was excellent Public Speaking Speech.
Informal event followed by formal event. Opening up of corks, cheers & good food was spiced by personal attention given by Host to ensure that mood spirals up. Everyone was enjoying the evening, full throttle with the feeling that ‘time should standstill ‘.
However time doesn’t stop. While returning home, I was taking stock of yester(37)years. We came from different schools, departed in 1980 to face life and in 2018 assembled after having SLICE of life, completely diverse from each other. That’s the destiny. Few departed to gods abode, were remembered. Now we have to form committee, to steer ahead & enable society, as advocated by Sir.
I was happy & at peace. While I received many commendations for ‘to the point & brief anchoring’, one praise says it all by Sandip, saying ‘ Mankar, I can’t imagine the event without you being the anchor. You have done the task with ease & made us nostalgic. Opening was solid’.
Thanks to all Organizers.

BMF - Jerung berdansa bilis sengsara...
BMF - Jerung berdansa bilis sengsara....
Pasar borong pagi ni aku lihat gerai Melayu sgt kurang ikan mungkin ikan x dibekalkan sbb pemborong ikan adalah keturunan Cina. Inilah bahananya berperang tanpa senjata yg cukup. BMF sebenarnya adalah perang dgn pembekal yg ramainya Cina. Nak berkempen sediakan dulu rancangan yg rapi. Berapa byk pembekal Melayu yg sanggup membeli jika Cina boikot barangan Melayu kna diambil kira. Berapa ramai pulak tokey2 Melayu yg sanggup menyerap entah berapa ribu pekerja yg akan dibuang kerja kerana tindakbalas senyap depa. Kalau takat hanya ada kuasa membeli tapi tak ada kuasa menjual jadilah mcm zaman Jepun. Duit banyak tapi nak beli barang takdak. Depa kata BMF tapi sebenarnya buy malay first yg samalah dgn buy chinese last sbb itulah serangan utama mereka iaitu Cina DAP.
Kalau depa kna buang kerja adakah tokeh2 Melayu mampu serap semuanya? Ambil contoh speed99 shj ada 4000 lebih pekerja Melayu. Melayu mana nak ambik depa ni kerja dgn gaji minima 1200 rgt sebulan? Tu tak kira lagi segala jenis perniagaan lain.. Cina pun mcm kita jugak. Depa suka keadaan aman utk depa meniaga tanpa gangguan. Yg ambik Melayu kerja kebanyakannya tokey2 Cina sbb mamak nasik kandaq byk ambil Indon dan Bangla. Malah Mydin sendiri pun aku tgk byk Bangla. Jadi apa rasionalnya kita marahkan Cina? Rezki memang Allah bagi tapi kena cari...- f/bk #celotehhalimcgupencen

Dr.M at Columbia University...
The UMNO-PAS symphony...
Umno and PAS have recently inked an agreement on Muslim grand unity with the forthright purpose of paving the way for the next general elections and reversing the downtrend of the two parties after GE14 by championing the so-called “Malay-Muslim dominance” and revisiting the unfulfillable “bumiputra political, economic and educational dominance agenda”. Naturally, DAP which has been championing the “Malaysians' Malaysia” for so many years becomes their primary target of assault. Judging from the actual political interests of both Umno and PAS, the latest development sums up the direct analysis of both parties' performances in the 2018 general elections. The votes for Umno and PAS were diluted as a result of three-cornered fights, culminating in the thumping defeat of the BN coalition, with multiracial parties such as DAP and PKR bagging the biggest gains. Instead of taking cue from the pluralistic Pan-Malaysian roadmap embraced by DAP and PKR, the Umno-PAS cooperation has been tailored to incite the sentiments of Malay-Muslims with the ultimate motive of capturing Putrajaya in the next GE. Such a strategy is not only unfavorable to the ruling PH coalition, but will also dash the hope of the country to make it into the league of developed nations. It is not the first time Umno and PAS have worked together. The May 13 incident after the 1969 general elections gave the significantly bruised Alliance Party an excuse to declare a state of emergency, with the national security council taking over the Parliament. However, when the Parliament reopened after two years, Tun Abdul Razak took over Umno, and managed to rope in the support of PAS, Gerakan Rakyat and parties in East Malaysia to form a much stronger coalition, Barisan Nasional. Before BN was toppled in 2018, the coalition had ruled continuously for 48 years, 22 of which under Mahathir's premiership.
In 1970, Mahathir wrote to the nation's founding father Tunku Abdul Rahman, demanding him to resign. As a result, Mahathir was expelled from Umno, and his book The Malay Dilemma was banned. Nevertheless, after Tun Razak took over as prime minister, Mahathir was brought back to the party. The ban on The Malay Dilemma was lifted after Mahathir became the country's fourth prime minister in 1980. Political incidents do not take place by chance, and very often the elements of orchestrated plans and designs could not be ruled out. And such plans and designs have everything to do with the conspirator's inner thoughts and ideological affiliations. Up till this day there are still people questioning the mastermind behind the May 13 incident as well as his motives. In the 1969 general elections, although the opposition parties managed to win more than half of all the votes, they didn't win enough seats to form a new government. Without PAS joining the subsequently formed BN coalition, the Malay supremacists would not have been able to press ahead with their racially exclusionist New Economic Policy. The National Cooperation Charter between Umno and PAS today is nothing more than a clone of 1970, and should therefore not come as a big surprise to anyone. The biggest reason for the establishment of the Umno-PAS dominated BN in 1979 was most evidently to safeguard the dominant rights of the Malays, while the readmitted MCA, along with newly admitted former opposition parties Gerakan Rakyat and East Malaysian parties, acted as “opposition within BN” -- minor roles thrown in just to dilute Umno's racist hue. As a matter of fact, Umno and PAS' nationalist president Asri Muda were instrumental in the sustained rule of Umno's Malay supremacist leaders. Ironically, the most iconic leader of the Malay supremacists was none other than the chief commander of Pakatan Harapan today, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the author of Malay politico-economic dominance advocacy and racially exclusionist economic model. In an inconceivable way, leaders of parties which used to cherish pluralism such as PKR, DAP and Amanah, have somehow submitted themselves to him unconditionally. Given Tun Mahathir's political inclination and style of leadership, we will see with much anticipation whether he will eventually bring PPBM, Umno and PAS together in a Malay-bumi-Muslim grand unity plan in a grand finale for his dazzling political life. Well, that's just an interesting, thought-provoking hypothetical question anyway.
Majority of pluralistic parties in Malaysia are made up of minorities such as the Chinese and Indians. There are also many multiracial parties in Sabah, but they are not much more than small regional parties. PKR is the only Malay-majority national multiracial party. Although DAP is a multiracial party dominated mostly by the Chinese and Indians, it has made significant breakthroughs in the Malay society as well as among the indigenous peoples of East Malaysia. The combined strength of these two parties, coupled with the potentials of Amanah, should make the Malay supremacists feel uneasy. It is therefore not surprising that PKR and DAP have become natural targets of Malay supremacists. Non-Malay leaders on both sides of the political divide must develop their own positive policies instead of fighting among themselves while keeping mum on the racist hegemony of PPBM-Umno-PAS. Even if they eventually win, they are nothing more than community leaders or “tribal chiefs” as I would unapologetically put it. The Tanjung Piai parliamentary by-election with its comparable Malay/Chinese voter populations, will be a litmus test for the Umno-PAS alliance. We will see whether it will break through its monoracial mentality and implement more flexible pluralistic strategies to woo the support of Chinese voters there. In the meantime, even though the ruling PH coalition has made remarkable progress in battling corruption, its ambiguous educational policies, reversion to old Umno's bumi-first mentality, a sluggish economy and depressing commodity prices will all provide a unique opportunity for Tanjung Piai electorate to evaluate the government's performance. It is believed that PH components will work hard to prove their worth, and render the Umno-PAS alliance irrelevant. - Boo Cheng Hau,mysinchew

Hindu ascetics lead millions of Indians in holy bath
PRAYAGRAJ, India (Reuters) – Millions of pilgrims began bathing on the first official day of India’s Kumbh Mela on Tuesday, the world’s largest religious festival where politics play an important role ahead of a general election this year.

During the eight-week festival at Prayagraj in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, up to 150 million people, including a million foreign visitors, are expected to bathe at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna, and a mythical third river, the Saraswati.
Devout Hindus believe bathing in the waters of the Ganges absolves people of sins and at the time of the Kumbh Mela, or the “festival of the pot”, it brings salvation from the cycle of life and death.
A highlight is the appearance of the Naga sadhus, or ascetics, who worship Shiva and bathe on the first day of the festival.
Many sadhus belong to monastic orders called Akharas and some live in remote caves, stepping out only for the Kumbh Mela, generally held once every three years in four cities across India.
Shortly before dawn on Tuesday, the first naked, ash-smeared ascetics, the Panchayati, plunged into the water amid cries of “har har Mahadev”, or “everyone is Mahadev”, another name for Shiva.
“It is out of this world,” said Varun K Seth, a saffron-clad sadhu. “When you get in the water, you feel like you are alive.”
Members of the largest monastic order at the festival, the Juna Akhara, raced down to the water carrying tridents and spears as police held back throngs of spectators.
“The river gives us immortality,” said a naked sadhu from the Juna Akhara as he reapplied a coating of ash on his body after bathing.
POLITICAL FLAVOR
While the festival is best known for the reclusive sadhus, the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was ever-present.
Giant cardboard cutouts of Modi, the Hindu-nationalist leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party who faces a tough test in a general election due by May, adorned the sacred site.
The BJP lost power in three states in assembly elections in December, and will want to avoid a similar result during the general election in Uttar Pradesh, a state of 220 million people where a strong showing can often decide the outcome.
“Modi is a good man,” said festival goer Seth, who gestured at a figurine of the prime minister. “He is watching over us.”
Modi’s chief minister in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, a firebrand Hindu priest pictured on billboards across the city, has championed policies that play to the party’s core Hindu base and alarmed Muslims.
