Today's birb, the nankeen night-heron! (well, for a certain definition of today, but meh)
[ID: A pixel painting of the nankeen night-heron, a squat little heron with a short, thick beak and what appears to be chubby cheeks. The bird is colored in muted shades of brown, blue, and yellow, and is perched on the end of a log. /ID]

Spotted this The black-crowned night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), or black-capped night-heron, commonly shortened to just night-heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, including parts of Europe, Asia, and North and South America. In Australasia it is replaced by the closely related nankeen night-heron (N. caledonicus), with which it has hybridized in the area of contact.
Might be the only bird I’ve seen flying at night frequently

Saturday 21st Oct ✅ ✅ ✅ Counts so far: 10 total, 6/6 days

37 dusky moorhens
13 coots
6 silver gulls
5 mynas
4 Pacific black ducks
3 chestnut teals
3 noisy miners
2 rainbow lorikeets
1 little pied cormorant
1 Australasian grebe. Breeding plumage is pretty!
1 swamphen
1 magpie-lark
Count 9: same. 12 species, 48 individuals.
16 coots
11 wood ducks
3 chestnut teals
3 dusky moorhens
2 swamphens — adult and baby, adorable
2 spotted doves
2 Pacific black ducks
2 rainbow lorikeets
2 noisy miners
2 mynas
2 silver gulls
1 nankeen night-heron. Finally!
Count 10: large urban park. 11 species, 18 individuals.
5 coots
2 welcome swallows
2 mynas
2 silver gulls
1 hoary-headed grebe. Non-breeding plumage (in October? maybe it's still young) so ID is hard, but the black cap clearly goes lower than the eye so I'm pretty confident.
1 little corella
1 little black cormorant
1 magpie-lark
1 magpie
1 noisy miner
1 rock pigeon
Also saw a lovely family of wood ducks with ducklings on the Yarra trail.
Aussie Bird Count log 2023
Monday 16th Oct ✅ Counts so far: 1 total, 1/1 day.
Count 1: nearby small urban park, at lunchtime, Monday 16th. 6 species, 123 individuals.
81 rock pigeons
23 silver gulls
9 welcome swallows
6 rainbow lorikeets
3 noisy miners
1 coot
Nothing special today. Was hoping for a cormorant (who doesn't hope for a shag? please clap) but it's probably too late in the day. The swallows are out in force, which is all lovely and summery. Little bit of rain, I'll remember my hat next time.
