"Guide" Sneak Peek by CandlitNights
Tumblr media
(Accompanied by art that one of my new Guide betas made!! @nanetchi )
Ok, so!! Be aware that these are spoilers! I made a new character for Darkrai's Guide, a Gible by the name of Ridley. I couldn't wait to introduce her and have been dying to release this, so now that the chapter is out, go wild! - CandlitNights
The cry was faint, and there was a quality to it that once again prompted some buried instinct to click into place. Mourning, pleading, and weak... Without any further thought, he pivoted toward the sound, dropping the hunk of iron as all senses funneled into a tunnel vision of sorts. He crooned softly in question—where are you?
The pathetic sound rasped further ahead, past a cranny in the wall that even his eyes had trouble noticing at first. He made promptly for it, squeezing himself through the gap and following his nose. Aside from the more foul scent of droppings nearby, he couldn’t detect the presence of another, human or pokémon. A hatchling then? Many species had no scent upon birth to avoid detection by predators... The thought propelled him more urgently forward, calling out again in earnest. Another mewl sounded in response, tucked away beyond one more bend in the cave wall, and suddenly there it was.
As Darkrai rounded that corner, several things became swiftly apparent. First, the other had, indeed, been a hatchling. And what a pitiful sight the poor thing was. Lying before him in a nest of piled rocks and grasses, a tiny Gible sprawled, shivering. Second, it was hardly larger than a Dedenne—not freshly hatched, but still recent enough. No eggshells remained in the nest, so a mother had at some point cleared them out...
Lowering as much as he could with a purr in his throat, Darkrai drew closer to sample the scents of the nest. Still, feeble as it was, the hatchling had realized by this point that he wasn’t familiar. Now it scrabbled weakly to the end of the nest with a rattle of air that might have been a wail. Its back bared to him now, he noticed the smooth contour of its dorsal fin—a female. Darkrai crooned to her once more as he took in the rest of the picture: mainly, the fact that the scent of the space was stale. No other pokémon but the hatchling had been here for a couple of days, and no scent of food lingered, either. Just the lonely and pungent scent of an orphaned, unkempt nest.
Drawing back, Darkrai fumbled with the pack at his waist. He had no meat, which was direly needed soon, but a paste of berries could only help. Spreading out one of the caster leaves he’d tucked away, he made swift work of mashing a few orans and leppas together. Then gently, he placed the offering into the nest before backing up to give the little one space.
“Eat,” he murmured. The Gible was far too young to know many words yet, let alone respond with any, but surely a mother had spoken this exhortation before? “Come, eat.”
Unfortunately, if the tiny thing understood, she didn’t move for the food. She barely took her watery eyes off of him to even consider the meal. It was only when Darkrai was about to turn back in hopes of bringing Akari that the hatchling let out a frantic chirp. Darkrai perked up with encouragement as she finally crawled forward to the leaf. She sniffed the concoction with a wary reluctance before taking a bite. Something in Darkrai’s chest swelled.
“Good.” He couldn’t help but smile. The fear that had become stuffy within the den was finally melting away as the child ate with increasing fervor. “Eat.”

More Ridley / Guide Sneak Peak
I added onto the other post, but I don't think people realized it was added onto and assumed it was just a reblog of old material. So here's all the old AND new stuff in one post, lol! Enjoy!
(For newcomers, this post is about a fanfiction on Ao3 called "Darkrai's Guide to the Care and Keeping of Humans," which is a slice of life / found family /comedy / comfort fic set in the world of PLA. The below art was made by one of my betas, @nanetchi)

“Good.” He couldn’t help but smile. The fear that had become stuffy within the den was finally melting away as the child ate with increasing fervor. This battle won, he settled down closer to the nest, maintaining the encouraging rumble in his chest. “Eat.”
Finally she finished and stepped back, gazing cagily up at him where he lay at the nest’s rim. Slowly, he shifted just enough to reach his arm out. Arceus, she was small enough to fit in his palms...
Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, she was having none of this. With a short gasp of air at the intrusion, she retreated back to the other end of the nest, shrinking into the brittle grasses as if to vanish beneath them. Darkrai retracted his hand with a low breath of disappointment. He would have liked to carry her back to Akari. It would have been even easier had he been able to lull the little one to sleep, but he had no feathers to protect her with. How foolish that he hadn’t thought to keep some in his pack in general. Live and learn...
Rising from his spot, he turned to make his way back out. He’d be sure to brush against the walls and leave a clear scent trail. He needed to get Akari over here with a ball, and quickly. He’d merely bought the hatchling time with the berries, and it was too cold to leave her alone for much longer, especially at her size. As soon as he turned, however, Darkrai jerked to a stop—though crumbled to his knees would be a more accurate description—choking on the roar of a sharp, sudden pain in his throat.
Gritting his teeth and flexing his claws into the cave floor, Darkrai cast a reluctant glance back to his tail, from which the hatchling now doggedly hung, tiny feet dangling. Faced with the prospect of being alone again, the tiny Gible had evidently found her courage and bitten down the moment he had turned to retreat. And although tiny as she was, those teeth didn’t lack any of the jagged, merciless bite inherent to her species.
With a groan, Darkrai lowered his head to the ground, pacing himself.
Oh, mercy, he was going to have to carry her like this, wasn’t he? He didn’t have the tough hide of a Garchomp, but this was the natural instinct and method of her line. If he tried to detach her now, the situation might actually get worse. He supposed he should be grateful she’d mustered the iota of trust, but he was too busy trying to ride out the pain at the moment.
“Ok, ok,” he coached himself once he’d caught some semblance of breath. “This is fine. It’s fine.”
Forcing his arms against the floor, he regained his hover and made his way back through the passage from which he’d come. The sooner they could get out of this cave and back to the village, the sooner she could get care, and the sooner he could get a bandage or something for that bite. That was one visit to Pessele he would not be looking forward to...
“Let’s go home, then,” he murmured over his shoulder to the little dragon. “Do you know that word? Home?”
Through the grip of her bite, the Gible managed to squeak out a tired, though endearingly relieved call back.
(You may be wondering why that hurts; my head canon is that the tail actually does have bone running through it and is much more than just wisp/whatever.)
Also, the tail biting as a means of transportation idea originally came from this comic. I loved it so much, I decided to adopt it.

The Chosen One and the Last Shadow
A little piece of traditional fanart inspired on Kineil D. Wicks' Pokémon fanfic "Shadows and Ash", featuring Ash and my favorite Pokémon Darkrai.
I've been meaning to get this fanart idea out of my head for so long 'cause I am obsessed with this fic. I honestly think it deserves far more love than it gets. In Kineil's own words, we need more Darkrai in our lives.
