You guys. Youuuu guyyysss. Nandor finally articulating that he WANTED Guillermo to be a vampire, that he so desperatly longed for them to stay, well, them, TOGETHER. But he knew, he KNEWWW all along that being a vampire was not the fate Guillermo deserved.
The show touches on how vampires miss their humanity: Laszlo inventing vampire spf and being so, so thrilled to be on the beach (i will not i will NOOOTTT put a list of "laszlo misses humanity, thats why he has fone x y z); Nadja seeking companionship within the greek diaspora, reconecting with her homeland; Nandor going to the human gym, Nandor leading an army of humans, Nandor literally stating with bitterness that he too was once human.
And i don't think that Nandor is aware of the nature of his feelings, not yet. He doesn't know why he wants to protect Guillermo from this fate. But he knows being a vampire is a cruel, cruel existance, and despite yearning for Guillermo to be one of them, he resists. He outright refuses. For Guillermo's sake.

I want to make a list of all the ways Nandor was pathetic over Guillermo in this most recent episode, from memory and not in order:
telling Guillermo to run when it became clear the Baron wanted Guillermo dead.
following the Baron out of the room to beg for mercy for Guillermo in front of the entire roast. I cannot emphasize enough that he did this to save his familiar in front of a whole room of other vampires and Sean.
clutching Guillermo's sweater like a security blanket
cheerfully handing out glasses of blood and flat pepsi when everyone else in the room is aware that he has been metaphorically cuckolded by his familiar
cradling "Guillermo's" dead body and giving a whole speech about how much he meant to him. After refusing to let Guillermo touch him for four and a half seasons
remembering the exact words written in the card Guillermo gave him over thirteen years ago

seriously if they don’t kiss or say I love you this part of the show was genuinely so poorly written. we’re looking at five setups for nandermo endgame and if they’ve not realised they’re stupid and if they realised and made these set ups with zero intention of following through and suddenly try to have a poignant message about power dynamics or something (despite trying to say this show is never meant to be serious and is a dumb comedy when they’re called out for flaws (marwa’s arc)) then they’re so cruel to a large proportion of the fanbase that’s been with them since the beginning.
people keep saying a “will they won’t they” always has the chance of ending up in a “won’t they” when it’s in a comedy show with a romance subplot and can I just ask what shows are you guys watching? like this is no longer skirting around a romantic undertones situation we are full blown “build up to a romance” arc right now and I cannot recall a singular sitcom where the romantic tension was left unresolved. this is pure ship bait right now cannot believe they are having you all on

The thing is, Guillermo being too kind and pure of heart to eat humans was always a fucking lie. Like??? Obviously, I think. And the Cannon Capital arc isn't really a departure for his character, it's us seeing all his worst traits highlighted in an environment that makes them MUCH less fun and sympathetic.
Guillermo has always been an intensely stubborn, self-serving character prone to tunnel vision who was willing to turn over pretty much every corner of his soul if it served his goals. Even if he did sometimes feel bad about it or force himself not to think about it so he wouldn't feel bad, he still did it.
He's still the guy who befriended people with the express purpose of luring them in to be killed. For years. He's still the guy who offered one of his oldest friends up to be murdered at an orgy, and only changed his mind at the very last second. He's still the guy whose version of trying to have a normal human life for once involved lying to pretty much every human in his life--his bio family and his boyfriend--about every aspect of his life but his name. He's still the guy who dismembered the corpses of his victims--yes they're still his victims even if he didn't strike the killing blows himself--in the front yard each morning with a dreamy smile on his face as he talked about the heart wanting what it wants.
Sacrificing Nandor to serve his goals at Cannon Capital is really not that different than sacrificing Jeremy to serve his goals as Nandor's familiar, except that in this case he had a lot more time to think about it and still did it, not via silence or omission but via a direct act of betrayal to Nandor's face. Perhaps it's because he never had to suffer any real consequences for his betrayal of Jeremy that no lessons were learned?
It's also really telling that when you reset Guillermo to his base state via sleep hypnosis, it's the sweetest, most wide-eyed and innocent version of him and STILL the first thing he does is offer himself up to be a vampire's familiar, all in a bid to have enough power that he can't ever be bullied again.
It's understandable. It's reprehensible. It's really ugly in a way that's harder to laugh off when you attach that to an extremely timely, familiar (heh) real-world scenario such as a venture capital firm that makes their money through shady real-estate deals that absolutely gut local livelihoods. But the Guillermo we're seeing right now is just as tunnel-visioned and stubborn and selfish as the Guillermo we've always known. We just very understandably like him less for it when it's real-world monsters we've all seen ruin real lives instead of fantasy monsters that are silly and fun to watch.
But this isn't out of character or off course or a step back. Guillermo is deep in denial and clinging to the Cannon Capital job because he can't face what he's lost as of the end of season 5. He's replaced Nandor with a master that's worse in every way, he's still clinging to the house while pretending he's separating himself, he's still sleeping on the remains of the makeshift coffin Nandor bought for him. He tells himself he is facing it and moving on, but I hope this time we all know that's a lie.
And I'm here for it when it all falls down around his ears, and he finally has to face himself. I'm really excited for it, actually!

nandor saw Guillermo’s decision to remain human as another betrayal, another ‘you got rid of me’ moment. he was so ready to spend the rest of his undead life with vampire guillermo but Guillermo said nope thank you i’d rather work an office job. Nandor was hiding his actual feelings last season for Guillermo’s sake, supporting his decision to turn back human. But this time he just broke down and actually talked about his real feelings. How guillermo’s decision had truly hurt him. Too bad Guillermo still couldn’t see it.

I almost forgot that the one who turned Lazlo was Nadja. Laszlo couldn't imagine giving that away to anyone else but his wife and that's why he's so cut up when he first hears the news about Guillermo.
And Nadja. She knows what it's like to turn someone you want to spend the rest of eternity with, so she knows exactly what has been taken away from Nandor.
The guy burned down her village but she hurt so bad for him, that she called Nandor 'legendary' in her dressing down of Guillermo

wwdits finale
I feel like I've written one of these chunky text posts after every season of What We Do in the Shadows, but I always feel so incensed about the decisions the writers continued to push.
I really do feel like season 3 reached the pinnacle of what the show was for me, and for me, it hasn't justified its continued existence since then. Ultimately, post-season 3 they decided to go with the overarching theme of "nothing ever changes, this is a metaphor for the long, listless immortal lives these vampires have." Guillermo is upset by this unchanging nature, but we never get to have a catharsis for him. He is ultimately stuck in their mire, and so it feels unsatisfying to end the series by having him continually strung along. It's not only unsatisfying, but it genuinely feels bad.
What would have been more interesting is if the writers had Guillermo push back against the unchanging apathy the vampires experience and provoke them, make them aware of their endless drifting, change and challenge them.
I really loved the idea of Nandor wanting to be human again in season 3 episode 8. I wish this could have been a long-running theme explored with him. Such an ancient vampire feeling so disenfranchised and out of time struggling with the idea of being human again, have some kind of emotional tether to the world. I think it would have been cool if, somehow in the end, Nandor could have been made human again, allowed to live a life he never really had. Guillermo could have easily facilitated this change in him. It writes itself.
Another thing I really didn't like in the finale was the explicit jab at anyone who ever found the relationship dynamic between Nandor and Guillermo compelling. Creating this framework of "Nadja hypnotizes you fool audience members into thinking Nandor and Guillermo are this married gay couple, that's so funny, it all exists in your stupid mind" felt very much like a punch down. I could probably extrapolate this argument out further to talk about the weird "woke homophobia" from the showrunners' framing: how queerness is always used as a punchline, how queer culture is a quippy line or a pride flag but not an actual element of the show, how queer relationships aren't ever allowed to exist seriously on screen in the way straight ones are. So yeah, that sucks.
Lastly, I felt the ending was disappointing because it eschewed any ideas. The showrunners decided to make it meta and self-referential as a opt out of saying anything conclusive for the characters or for the audience. It was lazy, bland, and unsatisfying. It will go down in my mind as a show that was half-good, with all this unrealized growth from season 3 siphoned into 3 additional seasons of sitcom slop.

cw: none! sweetsweet fluff. gender neutral reader. -------------------------------------------------------
You had recently moved into your new home. A comfortable house in a quiet area of Staten Island. It was a lovely place to live. Not too lonely yet not too popular - just how you liked it. After a couple days of moving your belongings into your new home and shuffling them around, you decided it would be best to introduce yourself to the neighbours. Everyone seemed friendly, some smiled on the street as they watched you gracelessly drag your new furniture into the house. You wanted to be involved in the community, make a friend of your acquaintances. So far, you have been successful. Your method? Bringing freshly baked goods to your neighbours. The way into peoples hearts was their stomachs.
After next introducing yourself to the neighbours opposite you - inhabited by a quirky couple named Sean and Charmaine - you were encouraged to talk to the residence on their right.
"Yeah, they're a strange bunch, but some of my best pals! European or somethin'." Sean explained.
According to the pair, there was a group of 5 neighbouring them. They spoke highly of them.
Charmaine cut in, "Oh, but y'know what? I never see them out during the day. They must all work bad hours, I think. You'd be better going in the evening time." Strange, you thought, but only for a moment. This actually worked out better. It gave you more time to prepare some confectionery.
By the time you approached the house, the sky had already faded to an amber and rose colour. The house had an overbearing presence. It was like something out of a book. On the walk to the door, you were greeted with bushes; trimmed and perfected into intricate shapes. Some of animals, some of what looked to be... genitalia? Huh. European. You note the cobble stairs leading up the entry, supported by two pillars. A deep tangerine colour shot from the stained glass windows onto the grass, it didnt seem like it was providing much light in the house as it dimmed and died on the lawn. The whole building seemed to be almost secretive. It was dark, like it was trying to hide away. You took a deep breath, holding your tupperware of cookies close to your chest. You rapped on the door.
After striking the surface of the door, you were met with silence. Then what sounded like a groan? Then a word. Maybe someone's name? You awkwardly shuffle in place as you wait. Finally, you could make out a shape approaching the door. You straightened your posture. The door creaks open, quietly.
"Hi, um, who are you?" The stranger asks in the politest way possible. From what you can make out from the dim lights of the house, he appears to be a shorter, stout man. He's wearing circular glasses and a sweater that reminds you of something your grandfather would wear. It's an overall comforting appearance. Judging the exterior of the house, you were worried someone evil and dark lived there. But that was not the case, it seemed.
You give the man your name, "I just moved in a couple days ago, I'm trying to get to know all the neighbours, I brought these," You awkwardly gesture to the tub of cookies in your hands. The man smiles at you kindly.
"How sweet, I'm Guillermo." He tells you. But before the pleasantries can continue, you are interrupted. The sound of heavy, heavy boots fills your ears. Striding down the hallway.
"Guillermo! Who is it that is at the door! They have awoken me from my slumber far too early!" A gorgeous man with long dark hair stands behind Guillermo now. He looks sleepy, his hair disgruntled. He's wearing some strange attire, nothing like you had ever seen before.
Guillermo gestures towards you, "Our new neighbour came over to introduce themself."
Nandor snaps, "A new neighbour!? Who gives a fuck about..." Oh? Oh.
It was only now that Nandor took notice of who was standing at the door. And how beautiful they were. He tugs on his clothing, trying to make him look presentable.
He clears his throat, "And your name is?" He asks. You note his accent, which makes every word spoken from his mouth seem more lavish and captivates you further. You meet his gaze and tell him your name. You have to pull away, however, fearing that you could get lost in his umber orbs forever and ever. He's fidgeting his hands, you notice. It's adorable. His fingers are looped with an assortment of rings.
"A beautiful name," he remarks, almost to himself. Flustered, it was your turn to fidget now, as you massaged the fabric of your jeans. Guillermo rolls his eyes. He knows.
"I'm Nandor the Relentless," The long haired man tells you. Strange title, but you are too wound up to notice. He could say the most absurd thing, and you will still be enamoured, it seemed.
"I, um, brought cookies!" You exclaimed, snapping out of your trance but a little too excited over some baked goods. Nandor the Relentless matches this excitement, however.
"How wonderful. I will enjoy these later, I imagine they are delicious!" He muses.
Gulliermo mutters to Nandor, "Nandor, you can't even eat human food." And Nandor quickly snaps back, "Shut up," all out of earshot to you, however.
You're dazed. So is Nandor. Even with his 36 wives, he had never felt such a connection. With this, you both found it hard to reach your next sentence. You stammered out, "Sorry if I uh, woke you up, your neighbour said you worked a late shift? So I thought coming in the evening would be better." You smiled.
"Late shift? No, I was slumbering-!" Gulliermo lightly shoves Nandor, to shut him up.
"That's right! Nandor was sleeping, just about to wake up for work." He smiled, covering for him.
Nandor catches on, "Oh! Yes! I have just awoken to start work at my normal human job. At the railroad."
You giggle at his manner of speaking. A railroad worker works late shifts? You had never figured.
"Oh! Cool! Well, yeah, I just wanted to introduce myself to all the neighbours and bring a little gift." You gesture to the cookies again, Nandor takes them finally. Maybe he was a little reluctant to take them from your hands as he worried you would disappear after. Your fingers lightly grazed his, a touch that lasted a little longer than average for such an exchange, but you still wish it continued.
Although you didn't want to leave and it felt like you were being pulled to stay, you decided it would be best not to intrude any longer. Especially if Nandor had to start work soon. "Yeah! So um, I hope to see you 'round. Have a good evening." You flashed another big smile and thumbs up.
"Yes! I do hope to see you around!" Nandor held an even bigger smile at you. It made your heart warm.
You turned on your heel and walked back to your house. It was only then when you were filled with dread. 'Why the fuck did I give him the thumbs up!?" You externally cursed. You were going to overthink this whole exchange all night. God you hoped to see Nandor again. In your heart you knew you would.

I don't watch a whole lot of television, so maybe I'm missing some perspective, but I've never seen a TV show where the Main Character was a fat gay man (or person in general, I'm not crazy enough to think they'd ever try to pull this with a fat lesbian for instance) where neither his sexuality or fatness were 1. An overt problem in the narrative or 2. The butt of routine or mean-spirited jokes. What We Do In the Shadows was awesome in so many ways, but it was also awesome because I got to see a gay and fat person do all kinds of shit as a main character without being constantly questioned or degraded for being fat! I really, really love Guillermo. He's a vampire slayer! An action hero! He looks cool, cute and sexy all at once in his action scenes- I love watching him grow as a character and stand up for himself, I love his jokes, he's really such a great character! So this final season sucked, right. Like this final season was total shit ass, I'm sorry. I'm so disappointed. I feel so let down. There are a million reasons why it sucked, but right now I just feel sad because of how everything turns out for Guillermo and the queer and fat representation in the show. First of all, it really threw me for a loop when the show opened with crazy fat jokes about Colin Robinson. That obviously did not land for me at all and why would it land for wwdits viewers? We are following a show where we are emotionally invested in a fat MC and we don't have a *problem* with fatness- so why would I think it's funny that Colin Robinson "got fat"??? Make it make sense lmao.
And I don't know why the fuck Nandor and Guillermo's entire relationship was abandoned. Did every single writer jump ship and get replaced by someone who's never seen the show or??? Well, it feels like a punch in the gut for a few reasons:
This show is supposedly "queer". Every known vampire is queer and Guillermo is gay. But the only consistent relationship is Nadja and Lazslo, which isn't a problem obviously we love them, but would it kill the show for there to be...? More visibly queer relationships? It's a show that insists its gay over and over again in word but not action. I don't care if Nandor and Lazslo like to fuck each other silly offscreen, and Nadja is also supposedly queer in some way, off screen- everything is conveniently off screen. Nandor and Guillermo did not *need* to get together, but the lack of explicit acknowledgement is weird. It just is.
Also, it would just be nice! Like am I crazy? Is it too much to ask for? To see a fat MC be in love and in a relationship not in spite of their appearance but just bc the other person likes them? I feel like every show with gay couples as main characters is a romance based show that is mostly About them getting together. Wwdits is so much fun because it's about so many things! But why couldn't this be *one* of those things? Can you think of a single show in the world right now where a fat queer main character is in a relationship and their looks or their sexuality are not the key point of conversation about the relationship? I can't! This was the perfect opportunity! Nandor and Guillermo fell into a well established relationship trope that had nothing to do with appearance or sexuality, and people who like that trope were naturally drawn to it. Why did they just spit on the whole thing? It makes no fucking sense.
Any response like "well sometimes unrequited love is a good plot" "X needed to grow and Y relationship was bad" "It's better this way because of XYZ" "It would have been toxic" this is a silly tv show about murderous vampires. Guillermo is also a murderer. There is just no possible way that a relationship between Guillermo and Nandor would have ruined the show lmao. It would have been fun! Remember when TV comedies were about being fun! I sure do! Apparently asking for a fun gay relationship between the queer main characters of the "queer TV show" is just too much to ask- better luck next time! Honestly, I feel so bitter lol. Bitter and sad. A show this fun and a cast this good deserved a waaaaay better ending all around. This post isn't even touching all the other weird shit and quite a lot of objectively bad shit that was wrong with the season
Before anyone gets all weird about my use of the word fat if you're not familiar with that, I am fat and I think fat is a neutral word and am trying to normalize the usage of it instead of substituting it with shit like "plus size". Fat is not an insult in the context of my words lol

I know I'm a perfect stranger, but I'm a fellow fan, and I need to vent this shit to someone. That was the most heartbreakingly dissappointing and infuriatingly insulting half hour of television I've ever personally experienced. Especially because they had Guillermo there as the perfect audience stand-in relating to all of our pain. I was in tears watching him desperately grapple for some kind of character development, meaning, revelation, resolution, something, ANYTHING. Amid unfunny and often straight up insulting, callous jokes at his and our expense. Plot points brought up and left unresolved, character development left uncompleted. All the obvious Nandermo hints straight up queerbait, Nandor will remain romantically lonely and never discover the love "right under his nose" that was obviously seemingly intended to be Guillermo, Colin will never know Lazlo really raised and cared for him, Memo too, Guidja was never going to happen, Lazlos Dad locked in the closet with Colins Funkos seemingly hinting at making a comeback, not happening. Jerrys betrayal arc anticlimactic, badass parts of Guillermos last fight scenes with his cousin pointlessly cut for unfunny pointless bullshit, Nadja never getting an independent business or whatever, Guillermo and Sean mortal and destined to die and be lost to their friends forever someday. WHY THE FUCK DID COLIN BEAT HIM!?? they were hinting towards him being an EV but now that scene makes no fucking sense missing an opportunity to also explain where EVs come from. The Guide being pushed to the wayside. None of the other characters were brought up again. 3 fake endings obviously meant to insult us for, of course, being upset by this real bullshit one, one of them insulting us for wanting the Nandermo they had hinted at themselves, needlessly stretched between 3 episodes. The shitty Nandermo mocking 'cameras off' comment near the end. We were strung along with Guillermo for SIX FUCKING YEARS, and all of it wasted, none of it mattered. It was all pointless. The writers didnt care. And by the end seemed to hate us for loving and being attached to the show they made for so long and wanting more, and wanting Nandermo, which they set up, and just queer ship rep that they had been setting up in the first place. I guess you could say Guillermo grew the most, but I would've liked to see more about where he ended up. They had the option of another episode they turned down. There was just so, so, much wasted potential with what this show could have been and how much more time could've been spent on it without 'jumping the shark' as Waititi claims if it had competent, progressive, brave, writers who gave a shit all the way through and it didnt need to have constant jokes later on with less dramatic breathing room. They just wanted to be done with it. I can see now why Matt Berry seemed so unenthusiastic in interviews and apparently Harvey seemed annoyed with Simms in promos, and that comment he made in an interview about his last moments on set reminding him of Titanic and "Nandor and Guillermo finally being able to be, y-know" So fucking heartbreaking him experiencing this after getting invested in these characters and their relationship as a queer man himself. I was sitting there watching Guillermo walk into the foyer and just sit there silently defeated in tears, staring into the void as the other characters sang "we'll meet again" in the background, and I'm just crying with him.
The good thing about fandom is that we're all perfect strangers and great friends at the same time, as high school musical once said: "we're all in this together".
Go ahead and vent in my comments! Scream your truth! They fucked with us!
I guess I'm actually not that angry because I could see it coming from a mile away, I feel like I've been grieving this show since season five ended and they destroyed Guillermo's arc, I just didn't think it'd be this bad.
There's just nothing there, no purpose, no aspirations, no character development. I get what they were going for, they been trying to ram it in since season 4 "Vampires don't change and everything stays the same" but the problem is that they have changed and significantly so throughout the seasons, they have grown and learned and loved and lost.
It's just fucking disappointing and such wasted potential, like not even thinking about Nandermo, but in general. They couldn't give an ending to any other character because they had destroyed their characters and arcs so completely there was nothing to say. And they knew that, they had a whole season to figure it out and instead just went, ehh let's use Guillermo as a stand in for the audience and gave us nothing anyway.
I have so many thoughts because I've been watching since season 1 and ughhh, I have so many drafts that I'll be posting in the next few days. All I'm going to say is thank G-d I have interview with the vampire because I would be way more devastated if I didn't have beautifully written gay vampire media to fall back on.
Anyway feel free to come and vent to me!! It's the way to get through this! also we're totally friends now 💜💜

WWDITS Preference: When You're Sad/Depressed
(A/N: I've felt my depression flaring up lately (doesn't help that I can't watch the new WWDITS season yet lmao) so this is, as usual, totally self-indulgent. hope you enjoy, and feel free to request more stuff like this :D)
(Includes Nadja, Laszlo and Nandor x gender neutral reader)
Tumblr media
Nadja:
When she notices that you're feeling out of sorts, Nadja is surprisingly compassionate. While not particularly good at talking things through with you, she does try - at the very least she'll let you rant if you need to - and will loudly assure you that to think lowly of yourself at all is ridiculous, I mean, look at you! You're wonderful! Once you're done talking she takes it upon herself to organize a movie night in an effort to cheer you up. Hearing her enthusiastically sing along to the Mamma Mia soundtrack is at worst a good distraction, and at best it'll get you smiling and singing along too.
(It also goes without saying that if a person has caused your sadness, she'll hunt them down without a second thought.)
Tumblr media
Laszlo:
Not that he'd do it for anyone else, but Laszlo will immediately sit down to have a conversation with you if he notices you feeling depressed. It hurts him to see you so deflated and he won't stand for it. He will offer advice and affirmations as you talk, and reassures you that you can always confide in him in future if it'll prevent you feeling this way (and, like Nadja, will kill for you if a person caused this).
The same day, he'll compose a song for you on the piano and requests that you sit beside him while he plays it to you for the first time. He'll play that song to you in future whenever you feel down as a reminder of how much he cares for you.
Tumblr media
Nandor:
When Nandor sees that you're feeling depressed, he's very empathetic. He's been through his fair share of it, after all. His methods of helping aim more towards taking your mind off of things and making you smile. He'll take you out somewhere if you feel up to it, dance with you at home if you want to stay in (honestly I'd kill to slow dance with Nandor), and gives you plenty of physical affection.
Everything that he does, he watches your face carefully until he sees you smile and then beams at you like you're his entire world. He will not stop until he's sure that you feel loved and wanted, and on particularly bad days he will go to the lengths of making a glitter portrait for you.

My Familiar’s Ghost part 31
Masterpost

ID: 1a. Close up on Nandor looking nervous and a bit flushed, twisting his fingers together anxiously. He glances to the side and says, “Guillermo, the weather is getting very bad, perhaps-“ 1b. Full body of Guillermo in profile, slumped forward over his lap with his elbows on his knees and his face buried in his hands. Black wraith scraps arc and swell around him in the shape of a hood. He interrupts Nandor and continues, “I don’t want to keep hurting you. But it seems like I’m destined to, whether I’m human or vampire or ghost or wraith
 Whether I stay, or
” 1c. Close up again on Nandor, fully turning his head away in sad resignation as Guillermo continues from the previous panel: “whether I leave.”
2a. Close up of Guillermo from the front as he looks up from his hands, expression crumpled. Offscreen, Nandor asks "So why not stay, then? If it is the same either way." 2b. Close up on Nandor's hands, fingers anxiously twisting and untwisting. Offscreen, Guillermo replies, "That's what I'm trying to do." 2c. Waist up of Guillermo from a low angle, looking down at his hands which hover palm up at chest level. Expression agonized, he continues, "But I'm not really me. I'm a...reflection. The real me is out there, somewhere, and I'm staying further and further away from him every day. I don't want you to remember me like that.
3a. Close up of Nandor, staring at Guillermo with brows furrowed. Shakily, he murmurs, "Guillermo, what..." Offscreen, Guillermo continues, "That's why I have to do this. So we can both move on." 3b.
