Family Secret
Nancy Kuhl
Too many cracks precede  the spectacular breaking. Each
story begins in a different dark- ness. And light: think how it catches
on any surface (pane or  hinge or keyhole) and
out of night (out of nothing),  all at once: a window,
a door. It’s a metaphor  (and then it isn’t), darkness.
When I dream again it’s the old kitchen—I
open the oven and sound,  like ropes of heat, drifts
out; a shimmering. Familiar  and confusing. Uncanny,
and then unmistakable: our  voices, recorded. Playback
and loop, now—every aching  word we whispered here.

So a folie a deux in French means Madness of Two, and in psychiatry refers to a shared psychosis. Often times it’s seen between family members.
THIS IS SUCH A FASCINATING TITLE, and it’s the most hyped I’ve been for an episode this season.
So this is the description:
DR. RHODES AND DR. BEKKER TRY TO SAVE A MISDIAGNOSED PATIENT WHILE DR. CHOI IS ON A MISSION TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED DURING A STABBING AT HIS APARTMENT COMPLEX - MICHEL GILL GUEST STARS - After a neighbor is stabbed, Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) enlists the help of April (Yaya DaCosta) to figure out who is the real cause of the incident. Dr. Bekker (Norma Kuhling) and Dr. Rhodes (Colin Donnell) expertise is put to the test when Noah (guest star Roland Buck III) misdiagnoses a patient. Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) is put in an uncomfortable position when Dr. Reese’s (Rachel DiPillo) estranged father (guest star Michel Gill) comes to him as a patient without her knowledge. Meanwhile, Dr. Manning (Torrey DeVitto) rushes to save a baby with whooping cough. S. Epatha Merkerson, Marlyne Barrett and Nick Gehlfuss also star. Jesse Lee Soffer, Ato Essandoh, Roland Buck III and Eddie Jemison guest star.
The three main cases this week, assuming that Natalie’s isn’t as important since it’s at the end of the description and that’s a pretty common pattern with the press releases, are all pairs of characters. Which means there are a minimum of three ways this title could play into the episode.
We have the most obvious which would be Sarah and her Dad. Dr. Charles sees a lot of the paranoia and anxiety that Sarah has in her dad. Which could be really interesting. I mean I’m already excited for this storyline but this is the least exciting way to take a foile a deux.
The second way could be having to do with Connor and Ava both believing Noah is wrong. Maybe they are actually the ones who are wrong and have this shared delusion, and something happens to their patient as a result of this.
My personal favorite option is that it has something to do with Choi and April’s case. The most common thread of conversation that I’ve heard of a foile a deux is with regards to crime. There have been famous cases like the Papin Sisters who killed their employers, and the Ericsson sisters who ran into oncoming traffic but were both fine. These cases deal a lot with the idea of a domineering presence of one member of the pair controlling the other. I don’t know how this might contribute to a stabbing, but I think it’d be the most fascinating. Also I’m imagining Ethan as the Hardy Boys and April as Nancy Drew getting to the bottom of this mystery.
Anyway, tell me what you think the title means, if it means anything.
