It's funny that sometimes I think saying Nanase is canonically a lesbian is reading too much into it given the only evidence we have is One scene that's just subtext and coding (and okay her wearing that suit, that's a very soft butch gay suit. And then there's her fascination for Reiko but I don't think that really counts, and that's mostly developed in the anime sadly), but then I reread that moment from Special 17 and I'm like. umm. Midorikawa what was the purpose of that scene if not to tell us she is Very Gay lmao

I just love the implication that apparently Nanase being a lesbian is such a widely known fact within the exorcist community that yokai literally take the appeareance of women to flirt with her. Like okay. Even Takuma coments that she's "popular as usual," which granted he's just teasing her about the yokai flirting with her here but still. What's your history Miss Nanase 😭 Do you think when she was young she was a ladykiller who went around seducing all the female exorcists so that's why she has that reputation lol

Also I'm kind of mad about how the official English translation did that specific scene:

YOKAI: We don't like men. Won't you please make me your servant? C'mon, Nanase.

Like. At least they still come off as flirting with her, and yes, the original Japanese can be a little ambiguous — but honestly that's pretty clear the yokai are not talking about themselves but that they're talking about Nanase.

YOKAI: 男は嫌いなんだよう だからさあ 式にしておくれぇ ねぇ七瀬

"Otoko wa kirai nandayou" make little sense to translate it as "WE don't like men"... They're clearly talking about Nanase disliking men here, especially within the scene's context given what Nanase says next? She basically states that those yokai took the appearance of women to "fool around [with her]," so what would be the point of doing this if not because Nanase "hate men"?

It pisses me off a little, like c'mon. I don't really think it was deliberate but that's still annoying because it does somewhat change the gay subtext. At least recently they still kept Shinobu's flirting with women intact so I hope that was still some unintentional mistake on their part but well.

I hope the new anime season adapt this scene properly too and that the sub/dub don't mess it up (the anime do tend to give Nanase a lot of screentime so I'm curious about how they'll adapt this tbh.)

Spoilers of Natsuyuu Sp.24

Not a summary, just something I think interesting.

Spoilers under cut.

Nanase looks cool here~ She comes to the old bookstore to see if there's anything interesting.

Todoroki-san, an old exorcist Todoroki clan's head, was already here before her.

To Nanase, Natsume is an 'annoying monster'.

It seems if subordinates team up with others without Matoba's permission, they will occasionally be scolded.

Todoroki said if Nanase is was scolded, she would also bow her head and apologize to Matoba.

Nanase's Shiki. Nanase already had some old shikis before joining the Matoba clan. And some of them even been eaten up by the stain of Matoba clan's failure to keep their promise.

Todoroki's shiki. Todoroki thinks that her shiki is strong but not clever... She once took her shiki to enjoy flowers, but her shiki did not know the names of flowers or birds. Maybe it's because she is only an exorcist's shiki..

Todoroki gets angry because her shiki didn't come back and report. But her shiki seems to know that Todoroki is afraid of her leaving.

At the end Nanase and Todoroki don't need to do anything. Because the 'annoying monster' comes.

Natori came to the bookstore before Todoroki. She tried to invite him first, but he refused. So if there was anything interesting in the bookstore, it would have been bought by Natori first.

And the book Todoroki bought was just a "Flower and Bird Illustrated Book"

Y'all, in Nanase's childhood flashback, she was a little girl while Natsume Reiko was already going around making a name for herself. We can assume Reiko must have been around middle or high school there. Hence, Reiko is likely older than Nanase.

We don't know Nanase's present age but perhaps somewhere in the mid-50s is a good estimate since she's pretty energetic despite the gray hair and wrinkles. Reiko is anywhere from 4 to 7 ish years older than that which puts her at late 50s to early 60s if she were alive.

Now why do I bring this up?

In Yorishima's stats, it's said that he's 50 or older. While it doesn't specify, there is a good chance that he may be a couple years younger than Reiko, maybe even a whole decade younger. To me this seems to suggest he may not have been Reiko's lover, as he would have still been a kid when she talked about the mysterious man in that one flashback chapter.

Furthermore, Takashi said that Reiko had her daughter young (I'm putting that at 18 - 22), so is it not likely that her lover must have been around her age or older rather than younger?

Yorishima knows who Reiko was, so there is definitely some connection there. He might be related to the grandfather or was around way back when. Either way it seems he is the key to uncovering another layer in this mystery even if he himself might not be the answer.

He remembers one of those nature documentaries that Natori had lent his voice to.

Animals don’t try to compensate for the things they’ve lost. And sometimes they might even regain them if that is their design.

Would that be nice? Would that satisfy? Simple survival mechanisms that might ensure them another day?

Or is it the betrayal that burns brighter still?

If he were to take the monster’s place, he knows how he would feel. And in that case, he understands. That is what disgusts him most.

However, in such a kindred, familiar disgust, there can be nursed—then gained—a great advantage.

The original is best, after all.

One time, Nanase had patiently pulled a flower apart for him, divulging the secrets of its inner workings to further his knowledge or some such sentiment. Her face had softened.

They'd put the remains in the garden under the hydrangea bush. Food for the earth. It's a cycle, see? Seiji wonders if he's supposed to take comfort in that.

He'd done one such dissection for Shuuichi.

Shuuichi had made a strange face.

So then Seiji had laughed, tossing the petals to the wind.

Pistil. Stamen. Sepals.

She had pulled up a chair to the sink, leaning into him even as the blood dried on his face, skin, and clothes.

Then they had tiptoed down the hall, on a quest for fresh sheets, quiet so as not to wake the rest of the household.

The edges of the droplets feather away against the stainless steel of the sink basin as they make their way to the drain.

“I didn’t realize they were still this bad.”

It's not, though. It never was. He wants to say. He has before.

He doesn't want to see the look on Shuuichi’s face when he does, so he says nothing.

Shuuichi fills a glass with water, sets it within Seiji’s reach.

Its wings realign, mask back in place, and Seiji raises the parasol. A sort of camaraderie, he’s inclined to think.

The rain picks up and jostles the butterfly's perch. He shifts closer and stays there until he hears Nanase calling for him.

So let me start off by saying this isn’t quite what you requested so if it’s turns out you don’t like it, just let me know. I’d be happy to work with you to make something you’d like :)

I had a hard time imagining what Nanase looks like when she does exorcisms cuz we’ve never seen her in action. Like Matoba uses arrows and Natori has his paper but Nanase??? So, I decided the next best thing is to have Matoba and Nanase encountering a yokai instead. I immediately thought of that chapter where we see them dealing with the yokai that’s after Matoba’s eye. I thought it would be cool to show them reacting to that yokai but since we already know what present day looks like, what if they were younger. I ended up imagining a scene where little Matoba is absolutely freaked out by that yokai and runs to Nanase for safety. Meanwhile, Nanase tries her best to lure the yokai to attack the umbrella and not the little boy who will one day be her boss.

ive always wanted to make an animatic and thought it would be a good exercise to get better at drawing different poses and expressions, and since matoba has taken over all of my brain functions, of course it ended up being about him lol u‿u I love watching animatics so much and theres hardly any for natsuyuu so I hope this is able to fill the void a little!! Theres a LOT that could be improved but tbh im still really proud of it and feel like ive learnt a lot and it was so fun to make!!

Natsuyuu Anime S7EP6 VS Manga Vol22 SP.19 & Vol19 Ch.77

Sensei's "tsk" was changed to "hum" Matoba's "おや" was deleted.

Matoba's laughter was deleted.

Matoba's dialogue when explaining the content of the commission was greatly simplified, retaining only the most basic knowledge without details.

Deleted the scene where Natsume was suspicious of "Why did he keep me here?"

Natsume's description of things that the audience can directly see has been deleted as usual. By the way, we cannot see the youkai in anime as clear as in manga.

Anime deleted a lot of monologues and dialogues here explaining why he went to Hakozaki's house.

When they saw the Youkai, they were still outdoors in manga, but they had already entered the house in anime. That's why the dialogue where Beniko thanked them for coming was also deleted.

Anime changed Natsume's straightforward statement about investigating his grandfather here to be more tactful. First, anime moved the dialogue forward, saying that although he didn't know if he had the ability to help, he would look around the house. Then he use "speaking of" to bring in his grandfather's matters.

In terms of dialogue, manga Natsume seemed to be talking to himself, so he later apologized for being rude. In anime Natsume used more questions, thus a more sense of communication.

Youkai hided behind this tower in amine. It is different from the manga in which Beniko answered the phone and left so Natsume could discuss the situation with Sensei.

Anime deleted Natsume thought Matoba sneaked into the house, and Matoba smiled and said he had permission LOL

Deleted scene where he said "かじん(家人) will not be harmed" (The "家人" here in Japanese does not necessarily refer to the family, but may also mean something like a servant. It may be an attempt to ridicule the identity of Sensei. But it may also mean people in this house. )

Manga's Natsume chose not to speak when faced with Matoba's request, and than delivered a monologue to the readers. In anime, he said, "I am (helping you) only for Beniko-san and Sensei."

Deleted Motoba's line "Do you want to hear it? Okay" and Natsume was again speechless.

His dialogue explaining the Youkai was again slightly simplified.

Deleted Motoba's "そうですね" (more like a modal particle for thinking than recognition) Matoba in manga just stared at Natsume, and Natsume asked him unhappily what was going on. Anime included a strong wind that made Natsume close his eyes. At this time, Matoba looked at him thoughtfully.

Anime simplified Matoba's instructions to Natsume into simply telling him to look to the east.

Deleted Nanase said "We meet in a strange place"

Deleted Nanase said, "It's so convenient that Youkai will come close to you when you are here."

The dialogue here was split into Natsume first asking if there was a mirror, Nanase responded that it was part of the spell, and Natsume said that the mirror was broken.

Animation added Natsume says "わかりました"(Got it) And Nanase also said "頼んだぞ"(I am counting on you)

Sensei in anime did not have the arrogant tone from manga, but he clearly complained that "forbidden techniques are really troublesome." Anime Natsume asked "Even Sensei can't exorcise it?"

Deleted the dialogue where Matoba asked Natsume not to tell others and hoped to have a good conversation with him (Because the content was similar to the summary part of the abandoned station later.)

Anime also deleted the sence where Beniko said that she only let them in because Matoba-clan agreed not to charge. She also promised Natsume again that if she discovered anything related to his grandfather, she would inform him.

Shinobu lets out a screech. Seiji has matter-of-factly dipped one of his sister’s plaits into cupcake batter. And with no regrets, he continues whisking away.

Nanase wonders how it took so long.

Alas, no cupcakes tonight—maybe for the best on account of Miss Matoba’s hair—and Seiji’s summarily banned from the kitchen for the rest of the month.

It’s almost a shame. And Nanase isn’t much for sweets.

“He looks like a playboy, doesn’t he?” Seiji’s golden-haired date.

Shinobu’s eyes crinkle with mirth. “He’s certainly played Seiji!”

The two of them are at the edge of the koi pond. The boy has their boy by the hand—a point of contact he makes sure to maintain.

She ambles over to them now, playfully tips them into the water. Shuuichi steadies Seiji by the waist and it’s the first thing he does. Seiji goes pink.

Shinobu delights in her brother, as always, with a fox-like teasing. She ends up in the pond too.

It is rather warm, after all.

Nanase sets her heart.

Nanase isn’t surprised by the news of the marriage.

Of course, the Matoba are one for custom. So, really Seiji? She looks at him over the rim of her spectacles.

“I, we, didn’t want to wait.” Familiarly pink.

“How romantic.” Seiji burns brighter still. She tucks a smile into her palm.

“Youth.” Is all she has to say. And isn’t it wonderful.

It is Shuuichi’s pride and joy, besides Seiji. A shining thing like a small car atop the back counter.

And oh, if Nanase has a weakness.

But Shuuichi doesn’t think of it like that and it is a few months before hers resembles anything like his.

Nanase doesn’t hesitate. He is a ridiculous, chunky excuse of a cat, and the window is right there. Who would blame her? Well, Seiji might, but she knows that Shuuichi and that boy, Takashi would back her up.

After all, he can find his way back inside if he wants to and if his pride lets him.
