The mission went bad.

Spectacularly, woefully, bad.

There were a lot of casualties. The intel the Oa received was outdated. The Lanterns were outmatched. The planet they were supposed to be protecting was in ruins.

1,009,953,907 casualties. Too many of them children. Hal had done the math in his head over and over. and over. and over. and over. From the end of the battle to the debrief on Oa to the flight home. There was nothing that Hal could have done to stop it, to change it.

It wasn’t his fault.

And yet.

He could still smell the awful stench of burnt flesh.

He could still see the terrified face of the child, who looked uncomfortably human.

He could still hear the screaming and, god, the pleading.

The Watchtower was the furthest he could make it without collapsing.

He doesn’t know whether he should be relieved or disappointed that the halls are empty when he arrives. He makes a bee-line for the locker room, thankful that no one was there to talk to him but still hoping that one man, in particular, would stop him.

His hair is covered in dust, and his face is speckled red from the minor scrapes he gained from falling debris, but the rest of his body is relatively clean.

Except for his arms.

Despite their purple skin, the Vraissol still have red blood. It’s thicker than human blood, but it looks damn near the same.

And Hal’s arms were covered in it, from his fingers to his elbows.

The dust washes away, the scrapes sting under the hot water, but they had stopped bleeding hours ago.

But the blood wouldn’t get off his hands.

Between the debrief and the trip home, it had dried and hardened into itchy, red cement.

No matter how hot Hal makes the water, no matter how hard he scrubs with the stupid high-tech expensive decontamination soap, it refuses to come off in more than tiny flakes.

The longer it stays there, the longer Hal has to look at the almost-black blood, the sicker he feels.

The harder he scrubs, the more he remembers.

All he can see is the family of Vraissols trapped under the ruins of their home, the child cowering in fear from him because it didn’t matter that he was trying to help; he had brought destruction with him. He can still see the blood seeping through his fingers as he tries desperately to stop the bleeding; he can still hear the explosion nearby. His brain had telegraphed every moment of the rubble crashing down next to him right where the family had-

The door to the locker room slams open as Hal’s knees give out from under him, and it’s the thunder of the battle raging overhead, reinforcements exploding-

“Hal!”

Someone is calling his name; he can hear it, but it’s miles away, and he’s not there. How could he be here?

Footsteps pound toward him, and it’s bullets raining down-

“Hal, it’s Bruce. Breathe with me.”

The room goes quiet - someone turned the shower off - and all there is the sound of exaggerated breathing in front of him as he desperately tries to get control of the air around him.

“That’s good, Hal. Can you look at me?”

Hal wants to snap back and tell Bruce to stop treating him like a child, but he opens his eyes to see Bruce crouched down in front of him, dress pants soaked and shirt sleeves rolled up, towel in hand and fear flashing in his eyes for a split second before he gets control of it.

Hal is hit with just how much he missed Bruce. One kiss before an emergency Lantern call, and he missed him like a limb.

“Hal, what happened to your hands?”

Hal swallows and gets a grip on his breathing before responding.

“Not my blood,” he says, startled by how even and hollow his voice sounds. Bruce sucks in a breath and motions him forward as he unfolds the towel.

If it were any other day, Hal would’ve laughed in Bruce’s face. If it were anyone else, Hal would’ve been angry.

But he’s too tired and hollowed out to protest.

So he lets Bruce wrap him in a towel. Lets him search through his locker for an extra pair of sweatpants. Lets him hold Hal steady as he steps into the legs of the sweatpants one by one. He lets Bruce guide him to the bench. Watches as Bruce putters around the locker room in silence, opening and closing a few cabinets. Pretends not to notice Bruce glancing over at him every three seconds.

He stays silent as Bruce sits next to him and takes Hal’s left hand in his own, so gently that Hal momentarily forgets that those same hands could tear down all of Gotham. So gently that Hal is reminded that Bruce is a father before anything else, despite what he tells himself and everyone else.

Hal looks away from his hands. Stares anywhere but down.

“I didn’t think anyone was here,” Hal says, just barely above a whisper.

I didn’t think anyone would see me like this.

“I got an alert as soon as you returned,” Bruce responds, just barely below a whisper.

You don’t have to hide from me.

Hal turns to look at Bruce. His gaze is focused as he works at the blood on Hal’s hands. Whatever he’s doing is working. Hal is starting to feel the air on his skin again, but it still feels like lead.

Bruce’s features are pulled tight in an expression that Hal would have once read as anger and frustration. Now Hal knows that it means that Bruce is throwing himself into a task to try and forget the worry and fear at war in his head.

“We were outnumbered,” Hal says, still not daring to break the quiet of the air. Bruce pauses, and his eyes flicker across Hal’s face, calculating. Always calculating.

Hal looks away. Bruce continues.

“The intel was wrong. Somehow. They had more firepower.”

Hal is silent as Bruce finishes his left hand. He switches to his right hand, carefully removing the ring and setting it aside.

“Even with ten of us defending that planet, we weren’t enough.”

Bruce works at his right arm steadily.

Hal doesn’t look down until he pulls away. 

His hands are raw and numb. There’s a section of his left arm that is significantly worse than the rest. He realizes it’s because he had scrubbed at it until he broke the skin.

Bruce holds out his ring, and Hal takes it. Holds it in his hand.

“1,009,953,907 Vraissol. And they were all terrified.”

“It wasn’t your fault, Hal. You did what you could.”

Hal’s head whips around to look at Bruce, his eyes meeting Bruce’s for the first time in too long. It’s not pity he sees in the other man’s eyes. It’s understanding. Concern. Pain. It makes Hal feel incredibly small and infinitely old.

“But that’s the worst part, isn’t it? There was nothing I could do. Not a goddamn thing.”

Bruce takes Hal’s hand again, takes the ring from his palm, and slides it back onto his finger. Hal doesn’t take his eyes off of Bruce for a single moment.

Bruce meets Hal’s gaze, places his hand on Hal’s face.

“Sometimes our best isn’t enough. But you tried. You can’t save everyone, but that doesn’t make you any less good. There is good left in this world, Hal Jordan. You are proof of that.”

Hal is silent, but his eyes are searching Bruce’s face, his hands trembling, his whole world unsteady.

He can see the weight that Bruce puts on his own shoulders; can feel the weight on his own.

Where are you from? Brooklyn, NY born in Crown Heights raised in East Flatbush.

How long have you been collecting sneakers? I was introduced to sneakers in 1991 but I started collecting for myself in 98.

What’s your favorite sneaker and why? Air Jordan 6 Infrared. It's the shoe Michael was wearing when he won his first championship, and to me just it’s just the most beautiful Jordan shoe to date! The silhouette is unmatched, it is timeless, and no matter how many times it is retroed I will buy it!

Besides your hometown, what is the best city for sneakerheads that you know of? Why? I would say LA 100% !! It is a vibe out there. I am part of a sneaker group and 75% of the people in there are from LA. They really about the culture they know their shit and they are fresh as fuck too.

Do you collect just for collecting or do you collect and rock? I collect and rock. That is why I double up on certain shoes.. Some kicks you gotta have for store and show but some you just have to rock them!

What sneaker got you into the sneaker game? I cannot pinpoint one thing, it is so many things. It was Music, my parents introducing me to Nike, my older cousin, basketball, the dope boys around the way, and my 3rd grade crush and her cousin who both had Aqua 8's. (LOL) I cannot just say 1 thing because they all had a significant part in it.

What are your thoughts on these fake celebrity sneakerheads? I hate them all! All of these dudes just get perks, some of them do not even know the shoes. That shit really gets under my skin. Showing off shoes that they get and not even knowing the name or numbers of the shoes, creating their own names. Shit is sickening. S/O to the Sneaker Gawd Wale !

How do you feel about the Off white collabs? I liked the first round of the collabs. With the Presto's, Air maxes, Blazers, and Jordan 1's. I think after that it should've been left alone. But I can respect what they are doing over there. I just won my first pair of Off-White's with the Lot 50 joint.

If you could wear only one sneaker for the rest of your life, what would it be? Air Jordan 3 Black Cement. Yes 6's are my favorite of all time but the Black Cement 3's just go with EVERYTHING!

What advice would you give as far as storing and preservation of your sneakers? Wear your kicks man. I store and rock! I get it, wanting to save shoes but putting them away and never rocking them, when you finally do ya it’s separating and crumbling. In order for your kicks to last they gotta be worn anyway. Unless you're truly just on some collecting only for show vibes.

What is the most you’ve ever spent on a pair of sneakers? $900... I was able to land Black and Red and Royal 1's from 2001 together. A friend of mine had them and said he couldn't think of anyone else. I had literally just started my new job. A chunk of my first check went to that pick up.

Have you ever waited in line for a pair of kicks? I waited in line once in my life for shoes and swore I would never do it again. It was for the 2001 True Blue 3's. I waited online at like 7 in the morning at Kings Plaza. LMAO I said this will never happen again. I didn't have the patience for it. I do not know how ppl used to do that shit or camp for kicks. I was there for 1 hour and I was like this is ridiculous.

You're also a photographer, how long have you been taking photos? I have been taking photos since 2011 but officially became a photographer in 2013.

How do sneakers play a role in your photography? That is a great question because I didn't want the 2 to mix at all. Because I'm a scenery and landscape photographer. But I got into photography because of sneakers. No offense to anyone but a bunch of these  "influencers" get on IG with their DSLR cameras, take some on foot shots and call themselves "Photographers". 90% of them do not even understand lighting. I didn't wanna be one of those guys because I actually live this and study it. But recently I just started letting it be that and owning it. I am nice with this photography shit when it comes to sneakers. I have a deep connection with shoes and I love incorporating that into my art. I thank my wife for that. I told her I don't wanna be just another sneaker photographer and she said to me who said you have to be ?! I took that and ran with it. Off-White just recently featured some of my pictures on their Instagram.

I remember you saying you're a sneaker enthusiast, what is the difference between that and a sneakerhead? An enthusiast really studies sneakers. Sneakerheads just love sneakers like it ain't really about the history and all that for them. They just love shoes because it is cool and makes them feel good. Us Enthusiasts are invested. Things matter like knowing years of a shoe. For example, an enthusiast would look at a pair of Jordan's like Taxi 12's, We know Michael wore those in the 1996 - 97 season, but we also know that Martin gave away a pair on his show for the Christmas episode to the kid who had holes in shoes. They are tied to iconic moments. A sneakerhead may love Bordeaux 7's because they are dope looking shoes. Where for me it's that Michael Jordan wore those in a video with Michael Jackson and Kris Kross in the 92 Jam video. MJ and MJ in a video with Kris Kross, do you know what that did to my childhood?! Give you one more example that is not even Michael Jordan related. Piggy backing off of Kris Kross,The Patrick Ewing’s were one of my favorite kicks growing up besides seeing Pat play in them one of my favorite Hip Hop covers of all time is "Totally Krossed Out" and Kris Kross is wearing both colorways. So you see what I mean there is so much tied to it with being an enthusiast. This is just my opinion though some may not agree so don't shoot me! (Ha)

From the time you started collecting up until now, would you say that the sneaker game changed for the best or the worst? I have been collecting for 20 plus years now. I have seen the game at it's best, I have seen it die, I have seen it revive, and now I am witnessing the death of it again. The sneaker game is disgusting right now, and I honestly do not think it will ever recover. It really saddens me. It is a popularity and money contest right now.

Does pricing affect your collection? Hell No! And I hate that some people are trying to make this the norm. IDGAF if you paid $500 - $2000 for a pair, It doesn't mean shit.  The narrative is getting outta hand.

What does the word “Hypebeast” mean to you? Hypebeast is a person that only buys shit for status and popularity. They cannot form their own opinion about shit. They have to wear and cop items based on what every celeb is wearing or whatever these Social Media "Influencers" are saying is hot! It is not only sneaker related either. N*ggaz were hypebeasting for PS5 last year..

What are your thoughts on the females in the sneaker game? They are the best! I wish we had a Sneaker union and it was only run by females! The men in this game are annoying and so over the top. It is so bad that they feel the need to compete with women. The men get shoes just to show off to one another. Like what type of shit is that? The females are cool. I had a dude on twitter tell me women don't know the value of a shoe let alone about the shoe. The men feel like they always gotta try to shit on the women. The women are just trying to be part of the culture and enjoy it. And they shouldn't have to try to be part of something that is open to anyone who is willing to be invested and understand the culture.

Any advice for a young kid coming up in the sneaker game? Wear what you like! Respect the game and the people who have been doing it before you. Because this new generation of sneakerheads are little entitled dicks. No respect whatsoever!! I don't care about Travis Scott shoes. Without Jordan being who he is Travis wouldn't have a Jordan silhouette to collaborate with! Same with Off-White. These silhouettes were here before these guys. Say know your history and pay homage!! BUT STAY humble.

See I follow you and I'm loving the way you include your daughter in your work, what does that mean to you? Man, it is beautiful!!!! Without even trying she is invested in the culture. Both photography and shoes. Myself and my wife are both heavy into photography, art, music, sneakers, and clothes. My daughter is into all the same things but we are letting it be her own experience. We are not forcing anything on her. We want her to enjoy being a child and whatever things she picks up from us along the way is just a bonus. But I love shooting her, and I love when she asks myself and her mother "do we like her fit". It is truly a blessing man!

Things I miss about Cassettes, CDs, or even Video games were photos, song lyrics, song details, and etc that came came in these booklets that were on the cover side of the case. I remember Blueprint's booklet and I remember seeing Jay Z in white long t shirt with baggy sky blue jean with crispy pair of white on white Air Force One low. Then in 2002, starting Beanie Sigel (Philly rapper signed with Roc-a-fella records) and his crew, came out with the movie call "State Property" which was Beanie's crew name. In this movie, everyone wear Nike Air Force Ones and it caught me and my friends attention. Shortly after we copped a pair.

Each one of us had a fresh pair. Few weeks or maybe a month later we got lucked out in local retail store call Sports Authority where these were sitting (slang for not being sold). So, they marked them down as sales for $40, which me and my friends ending up buying multiple pairs. We probably got 12 - 16 pairs among us which resulted the store to putting them back to retail price.

Some of us got lows, some of us got high, most of us got the mids. Mids were dope to me. I didn't like high version strap to hang low, so they get them dirty, and lows were good for summer time but not often in Seattle the summer is bright. So, mid was a good choice.

Air force has nice shape with quality materials like genuine leather. It doesn't have lunarlon or react outsoles, but they had heavy rubber mid/ outsole. By all means, this one not a light shoes even tho it was designed for basketball in late 80s. One of first shoes to have air bubble in the shoes (exception for Flyknit version of air force ones).

Air Force Ones were also known as Uptown's. The nickname Uptown came from New York city. These were popular to mass as Nike in late 80s. Nike might had their famous Jordan, forces were the sellers. Luckily few stores in Uptown region (Harlem/Bronx) carried these items which were used my street baller . These were known Uptown because you wouldn't see people in Downtown(business/Wall street centric) or Mid Town (Tourist area) wearing these and had to go Uptown of NYC to see them being used for playing basketball.

To many sneakerheads, these are must haves but to mass media or America, these were not popular until in 2003, Rapper Nelly from St. louise dropped his single call "Air Force One" which may these more popular and mainstream. Luckily, me and my friend were already ahead of the currents.

Forces may lose mainstream position but these will always be a go to shoes, especially the white on white. As sneaker lover, I believe, 5 shoes will always be a go to shoes. 2 of them are difficult to get, which would be Jordan 1 high (Chicago, black toes, or banned) and Jordan 3 Black Cements. Other 3 would be Timberland 6in boots with double sole, Adidas Superstars with white and black stripes, and, last but not least, white on white Nike Air Force Ones.

Go true to size, they should be bit roomie. Don't hoop in them. They should be casual shoes and idea of Forces are that you try to keep them clean because once they are strongly creased, got scuff Mark's or dirty, it's time for new pair.

The sneaker community has a culture that is different where a lot of people do not understand the passion and love for collecting sneakers. “In 2014 the sneaker industry made 31.315 billion dollars” (Statistic Brain). Sneakers have a need in society for keeping your feet warm, being comfortable for activities, athletic wear, and a fashion statement.  As of right now I use all my sneakers in my collection for these many different uses and and as a fashion statement. I have 20 pairs of sneakers in my collection. 15 of those sneakers are  Air Jordan’s some which I have had since 2011 when I was a freshman in high school. I have two deadstock pair of shoes in my collection which means they have never been worn. When you have sneakers that are deadstock  they can potentially be worth 3 times as much as what they retailed as. For me i’m not interested in making a profit off of my sneakers I have a passion and love for shoes.  

Deadstock Air Jordan Black Cement 3′s. Released February 17, 2018 and retailed at $220 dollars. When I was a kid I always wanted this pair of shoes and told myself when I get older i’m gone make sure I work hard so I can get my hands on a pair. When they released I just had to have them. This shoe is also very special to me because it is a OG (original) retro that released with the Nike Air on the back and on the side tag.

This is one of my newest pair of sneakers that I got at the beginning of the school year around August. These shoes are also deadstock, and customized by a local Normal artist and Illinois State student. Since I have been in college I have started watching anime and become a huge fan of two Anime’s which are Naruto and My Hero Academia. The shows are interesting and different from anything I would normally watch and the shoes are the same they are out of my comfort zone on what I would normally wear and that’s what makes me love them. The colors and all the detail turned a regular pair of white Air Force One’s into a one of one pair that I own.

I got my love of sneakers from my father for as long as I can remember me and him would get the brand new sneakers that would come out every Saturday.  Then it went from us both getting them to just me getting them, to me buying them on my own and it just resonated with me. My specific brand of shoes that I love, take pride in, and collect would be Air Jordan’s. My favorite Jordan’s would have to be the Black Cat Air Jordan 3’s and this is because in the 4th grade these were the shoes I got at the beginning of the year that I wanted so bad. My second pair would have to be the fire red 3’s and that is because that specific shoe is the last shoe my dad bought me before he passed away.

Air Jordan Hare 7′s. These shoes are very special to me and I think ill keep them forever. This shoe was a gift from my mom for my 18th birthday and the first pair of Jordan’s she has ever bought me. My mom knew it was a tradition for my dad to take me to get the Jordan’s for my birthday so she surprised me and took me downtown Chicago to a popular sneaker store named Succezz. I have never had a negative experience with collecting sneakers and will continue to collect and wear them for forever. My connect to shoes comes from my father and it is a connection that I can still feel when I get new Jordan’s and make’s me feel good  when I get a new pair.

Everything We Know About Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Zen Master’ Release

There is no rest days for Jordan Brand, as the popular house continues to bring the customers their favortite Retro Air Jordan pieces. For the Spring 2022 season, Jordan Brand and Nike will present 15 new offerings, introducing modernized takes on Michael Jordan’s signature styles. The collection will feature innovative styles, sustainable materials and fresh expressions of classic silhouettes. Also, the brand is presenting extended sizing for women. The Spring 2022 releases are scheduled for February and March, among the biggest ones are the release of Air Jordan 6 Retro ‘UNC Home’, Air Jordan 12 Retro ‘Playoff’ and of course the launch of Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Zen Master’.

Air Jordan 4 History

The Air Jordan 4 made their way into the sneaker world in 1989. Designer Tinker Hatfield and Nike presented the style in four colourways – two white-based Bulls colorways (White/Cement and “Fire Red), one black-based colorway (Black/Red), and a white and blue accented version (Military Blue). The design of the 4, did not stray far away from the Air Jordan 3, bringing the the mid-cut height and visible heel Air unit. However the new style brought a more streamlined style and lighter weight, featuring mesh netting on the side panels and tongue, and the unique lacing support system with the shoe’s iconic “wings”. Ten years after its initial release, the Air Jordan IV returned as a retro in 1999, and then began the Retro craze. Everyone wanted a pair of this stunning basketball shoe.

For this season Jordan Brand and Nike decided to dedicate the sneaker to the one and only Phil Jackson. Jackson was first an assitant coach at Chicago Bulls, then head coach from 1989. to 1998. The year he became the head coach of the team was the year Jordan Brand released Air Jordan 4. It is only right one of the styles gets his name. He is one of the most legendary coaches of all time as he has 11 NBA titles. He was also one of the main characters who made Michael Jordan a true star. Jackson was given a nickaname ‘Zen Master’ because he often integrated meditation, Buddhism and other spiritual traditions into his coaching practices. His holistic approach to coaching was influenced by Eastern philosophy.

Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Zen Master’ Design

When the news broke about the Spring 2022 Retro lineup, it was rumored that the name would be dedicated to Phil Jackson. Eventually Jordan Brand announced that the official name for the colourway is ‘Amethyst Wave’. The sneaker is dressed in Amethyst Wave, Bright Crimson, Black, and Cement Grey color scheme.

The classic silhouette makes use of a textile upper in a swirling mix of pink, purple and blue — a tie dye-like effect that nods to Jackson’s ‘Zen Master’ persona. A black woven tongue features Flight branding and a scarlet Jumpman icon, while a translucent TPU heel tab displays a raised Jumpman logo in black. The Jordan XI: The Greatest Sneaker of All-Time

This Saturday, May 26th, the Jordan XI Cap and Gown drops for the first time for the general public. It will be the latest edition to the lineage of the Jordan XI’s which has become one of the most popular and sought after silhouettes in not only the Jordan line, but of ALL sneakers. So the big question is why? Of course there are many reasons why the Jordan XI may be the king of the sneaker world, but we will start with where the shoe itself started.

The first time that Michael Jordan ever wore the XI’s in game was in the 1995 Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Orlando Magic. This was after Jordan had returned from his stint in baseball and all eyes were on him. Fans watched in awe as Jordan ran up and down the court in the Concord XI’s, with black patent leather by the outsoles and a fine white ballistic mesh on the upper and of course a 45 stitched into the heel. However, Jordan and the Bulls stay in the playoffs would be cut short; however, this was far from the last time the world would see the XI’s in action. The Jordan XI’s design in itself is extraordinary. When legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield was in the process of making Jordan’s new model he watched film to evaluate how MJ played and how he could help his game with a shoe to compliment his style. He noticed MJ’s foot would slide off the soles of his shoes when making hard cuts, so to help with this he added patent leather, a first for a performance sneaker, along with a padded collar and tongue for extra support and comfort. He also replaced the common plastic shank plate with carbon fiber, another first, which when sitting in the translucent- “frosty”- outsole along with the full Air Sole unit gave MJ extra bounce to compliment his already absurd athleticism. Jordan would go on to wear the XI during the 1995-96 season. This season would cement the Jordan XI in history. MJ and the Bulls would win a then record 72 games, giving one XI colorway its namesake the “72-10’s”. MJ took the silhouette to Hollywood where he wore a black/varsity royal/white colorway in the move Space Jam. The aptly named “Space Jam” XI’s would go on to be worn by MJ in that year’s playoffs and become one of the most popular colorways of all XI’s. During the season’s All-Star game MJ wore an all-white pair of XI’s with light blue accents, later dubbed “Concords” or “Legend Blues”, winning the contest’s MVP for the second time in his 10th appearance. At the onset of the 1996 playoffs MJ debuted the “Bred” colorway, an all-black upper with red outsoles, in a 102-85 whooping of the Miami Heat. He wore this particular colorway for much of the postseason and also earned them the “Playoffs” moniker. Jordan and the Bulls would go on to win the Championship that year, their fourth and first of their second 3-peat, to cement the team as well as the Jordan XI’s in history.

However, this far from the last time that the Jordan XI would have an impact in the world of sneakers. When the XI’s first were made MJ was quoted saying that people would wear them with a tuxedo. This came into fruition only months later when R&B group Boyz II Men each donned a pair of XI’s with their tuxedos at an awards show. This further boosted the popularity of the shoe into mainstream media and the general public by making it a fashion staple as well as a performance sneaker. Even in today’s age, numerous celebrities, such as Drake, Kevin Heart, and DJ Khaled among others, can be seen wearing the same colorway staples that Jordan wore himself during games, as well as ultra-rare iterations of the shoe. One such grail as the “Snakeskins”, which replace the patent leather around the midsole of the shoe with its namesake, are so rare that they are considered priceless. Each year Jordan brand releases several low versions of the shoe, which does not go as far up on the ankle. Some of these follow the same colorways released in the high version that Jordan himself wore. Others such as last years released “UNC” lows, which sports the patent Carolina blue as the patent leather, or the recently released “Cool Gray” lows continue to keep the Jordan XI silhouette at the front of every sneaker heads mind. Besides these low versions of the XI’s and special releases such as the “Pantone” XI’s, an original high-top version of the shoe that is completely covered in Carolina blue from the patent leather to the ballistic mesh upper, and “Cool Gray” XI’s, an original high-top style that is adorned with gray patent leather and a gray suede upper, sneaker lovers have become accustomed to Jordan brand dropping one version of the Jordan XI in the original high-top style each year around Christmas. During the 2016 holiday season Jordan brand announced they would be re-releasing the “Space Jams” for the first time since 2009. This resulted in one of the most successful and lucrative releases in all of Jordan Brand’s and in fact all of sneaker history. This past year sneaker heads were treated by Jordan Brand when they announced that they would be releasing two versions of the coveted Jordan model. These two models would be two completely new iterations of the shoe in never before seen colorways that paid respect to Michael Jordan’s illustrious career itself. One model was dubbed the “Win like 82’s” which featured a game royal patent leather on the mid-sole with a white upper and then a Carolina blue Jumpman logo. This model was made to commemorate MJ’s game and national championship winning shot as a freshman playing for the University of North Carolina in 1982. The second model was named the “Win like 96’s”, completely decked out in all red from the ballistic mesh upper down to the red patent leather. This particular model was named to celebrate the entirety of Michael Jordan’s historic 1996 season, the same season you may recall that the Jordan XI was truly cemented in history.

All of this leads back to the coming release of the Jordan XI “Cap and Gown”. This particular model is entirely decked out in black, both the ballistic mesh and the patent leather, with the classic translucent “icy” sole. This particular release marks a celebration of the Jordan XI itself and the mark it has left on both the sporting world, which continues to be a popular footwear choice for professional and amateur athletes alike, as well as on mainstream popular culture. Whether being worn by Michael Jordan during the heat of competition or on the feet of numerous celebrities, the Jordan XI is an iconic silhouette in the sneaker world and sits atop as the greatest sneaker of all-time.

Sneaker Passion

Sneakers have been a part of my life since I'm about 8 years old. I started buying sneakers when i was about 13/14 hustling around to make enough money to buy sneakers.

When I was 8 years old I saw the bigger kids in my hood walking around in the Nike Air Max 1 OG Red and I instantly fell in love even though I don't like red as a color that much.

When I was able to get money they were one of the first sneakers I purchased alongside a pair of Jordans. I was fortunate enough to find an OG pair of both the Air Max 1 as the Jordan 4 White Cement. Because I was hustling to get money I couldn't take my pairs home with me so I left them at a friends place where I would go before going to school to I could put my kicks on.

My parents didn't have that much money so they couldn't buy me that many sneakers. We (my brother and I) did get a pair of bball sneakers at each season start and those were the moments our parents spoiled as a bit.

I remember them letting my buy the Nike Air Force Max Black one year. I loved them so much. Now I have that same pair on display because of the memories. I also had the Reebok Double Pump (that's what I called them) with the weird system on the heel you could switch from left to right. I also played a season in the Nike Air Raid 2 Peace Edition Black version. Still one of my personal grails. After the bball season ended I ended up skating in them and killing them.

Since the OG pair in 1992 I was able to have the pair 3 more times killing all of them. The last one I still have at home in a box as I can not put them on display.

Back then it couldn't be called a passion as there was not really a community like now. I didn't know anybody else who like me was so passionate about sneakers and just wanted more and more sneakers.

Also back then I never really thought about stocking them which led to me rocking all my sneakers to the points of killing them. I don't look back with regrets as I have enjoyed rocking my sneakers but from time to time I do feel guilty about rocking to the point of destruction.

So many sneakers that never made it to the collection I have built since I realized what sneakers meant to me. The funny this is most of the sneakers I worn back then were underrated but now became like holy grails to everybody which always surprised me.

But this is a whole conversation for some other time.

Let's keep to the subject at hand. Like I was saying, sneakers have been a part of my life since I'm a kid and it has turned from rocking to collecting to a real hardcore passion.

But now I'm in a position which might give me the opportunity to work in the world which is my passion. I will not name any companies or whatever as I'm still in the middle of everything but tomorrow might just be the most important meeting of my life.

I never thought I would be in a position where I could make my passion my work. Off course most sneaker collectors would love to work in the sneaker world. But personally I always felt like I wanted to keep work and passion separated. Now I feel the time has come to take this step.

Most sneaker people when they start a blog it's with the purpose to gain some name recognition. Same goes for an instagram account or facebook page. And maybe a part of me does it for that same reason but the main reason for me is that all of that serves as a form of therapy.

I will explain more about that in later posts.

The designer of Jordan 3 was Tinker Hatfield in 1988

Michael Jordan the famous, former basketball player has a make of shoes plus athletic apparels named after him. These products are known as the Jordans and therefore are made by the reputable sportswear company known as Nike. Michael placed on the Jordans for the first time back in 1984. Welcome to our Inaugural post. Instead of giving you a run of the mill Top 10 list of sneakers we love or we think are the best of all time, we decided to bring you a little bit of a different list. It’s the Seven Deadly S.Y.Ns (Sh*t You Need). That’s right, the Pride, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, and Envy of sneakers, from us to you!  We hope you enjoy our thoughts. *In your collection what sneaker do you look at, wear with, or talk about with supreme pride?

Eric Says: For me it is most of my collection but the pair that rises to the top of my list is my Jordan XI Concords (2011) release. They aren’t even my favorite kicks of  all-time but I worked hard to cop and they’re so clean, a true dress up and dress down shoe.

The Cop: On December 21, 2011 I definitely called in late to work in order to stand outside of NIKETOWN NYC on 57th Street. So here I am standing outside on a 65 degree December day waiting for a ticket, A TICKET, that would then allow me to get the sneakers I desired two days later at midnight (this process is dated at this point). After two hours of waiting, by myself, they gave me my ticket (#152) and wasn’t I just the happiest twenty-eight year old sneaker enthusiast going. I then  proceeded to skip my happy ass to work with only one worry in the world: losing that damn ticket in my wallet. Thirty-six hours later on December 22nd with a light drizzle and significantly colder temperature, I waited on a line shortly before midnight until they called #152. As the NIKETOWN employee mumbled my number and asked for my I.D blood rushed to my head and my eyes widened but not because it was my turn to get my box but because I had to secure my route to the train station. I wanted no parts of the dudes that did not wait on a single line but wanted a pair of Concords as bad as the rest of us. Needless to say when I got home and opened that box with its many layers of beauty and removed the sneaker it was everything (the smell, the look, my feelings) I thought it was going to be it was. I have only worn this shoe six times since that day and didn’t even put them on my feet until June of 2012. Each time proud as hell with every single step. That was a lot about one shoe but I think you get the point. 

Eian Says: I would have to say for me the “De La Soul” SB Dunk Highs are by far the cream of the crop.

The Cop: Ha! I can remember this day like it was right around the corner. It was Fall 2005; I was 19 with no job and my mother’s credit card. This was before the crazy hype of Nike SB’s and most people that wore them were skaters. I remember the first store I went to for this cop was Blades on 86th street which is no longer there. They were sold out within 30 minutes, but I knew someone that had the scoop, that DQM (Dave’s Quality Meat) on Great Jones Street had them as well. I called my mom and we made a deal, some may say it was the deal that I sold my soul for but it was worth it. I did all house chores for about three months, an agonizing time that I will never regret because to this day the De La Soul High is my holy grail.

Lust: a passionate or overmastering desire or craving (usually followed by for):

Eric Says: SWEET CHRISTMAS! (Luke Cage reference) Jordan 3s Black Cement are easily the pair of kicks that I lust for. I DO NOT own them, I wasn’t even a fan of 3s until one of my brothers copped the “True Blues” for me. On my feet the 3s are pure beauty which is not easy to say when you wear a size 13 shoe. I now own several pairs of 3s but the Black Cement 3s are not one of them. They are just perfection--they’re also known as “THE” shoe that started it all. Every time I see them on the street (which is rare at this point) I turn into an ogling, clumsy-tourist like New York City pedestrian #SorryNotSorry.

Eian Says: Clean as clean can get: Jordan XI Concord. From the bottom up you have the clear ice sole followed by the white midsole attached to the ever so famous signature black patent leather. Now I’m not old enough to ever own the OG’s but i was lucky enough to get these on Christmas of 2011 as a gift from my other half. I can say it’s been six plus years since I’ve owned them and i have not worn them outside yet. I’m not proud to say it but i have not found the right (perfect) time to wear them. Now I’ve tried them on tons of times with my outfit on, ready to leave the house. Once I take a look in the mirror my heart and soul won’t allow me to walk out the door. This is a sad reality of living in New York City and taking public transportation; you just don’t want to risk the beauty of this sneaker.  

Gluttony: Overcompensation to the point of waste but as we know, nothing thought out and loved that is added to your collection is waste.

Eric Says: Vans SK8-Hi Originals (White on White). Now I know you are probably asking, how the hell did a pair of skating sneakers make any parts of my list but even more, how did it make the category of gluttony? Three reasons: 1. Price Point - In a world of $200 sneakers you cannot beat a clean, classic, all-around stylish pair of sneakers for $65. That is how much it will cost you to add these kicks to your collection. At $65 why would I not own three or more pairs? Some folks build a whole collection on Vans alone.  2. Color - Now this is significant. When I was a kid my mom always said we needed two pairs of sneakers for the summer: a colorful pair and a white pair. I have never abandoned this school of thought and every summer I make sure I have a pair of white on white sneakers. The problem with white on white is that they are hard to keep fresh which leads me to my final reason. 3. Wearability and personal attitude - The White on White SK8-Hi can be worn with shorts, jeans, khakis, chinos, hell even with a suit if you want. Combine this with the fact that when I fall in love with a shoe I will wear that shoe until the soles come off (a pair of brown loafers in my closet can attest to this point). That is exactly why I will continue to buy the Vans SK8-Hi Original (White on White) over and over again.

Eian Says: This is very weird because I would also have to go with Vans SK8-Hi original (Black/White). My reasoning is a bit different, these are great sneakers for the everyday Harley rider as myself. Not only are they bad ass but you can also get them dirty and messy and they’ll still look cool. I have about 10 to 15 pairs of the SK8-Hi but the black/white are hands down the go to colorway. The best part about the Vans for me is that I’ve worn them with a suit and I’ve worn them with jeans or shorts. They can be labeled as one of the most diverse sneakers in my collection.  

Greed: excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions.

Eric Says: Jordan 1s High. My, my, my, what a dope sneaker! Just a clean and classic kick. I actually feel like the Jordan 1 High is a Chelsea boot or Chukka disguised as a basketball sneaker. With a very similar feel to the Nike Dunk High (they could be cousins) the Jordan 1 High provides a certain nostalgia that is addicting. Get a pair and feel the power. Or not and that’s cool too.

Eian Says: Classic!!! There is so much to say about the Nike Foamposite 1. Not only is Penny Hardaway one of my favorite NBA players but I think he has one of the best signature sneakers in the game other than Jordan. It’s something about the Foamposite 1’s that always does it for me. Not every colorway but the Royal blues can’t be beat. They are clean on your feet and comfortable at the same time. Now one of my favorite things about the sneaker is that they will never EVER crease, which means they will last forever.

Sloth: habitual disinclination to exertion; indolence; laziness. Basically the sneaker you couldn’t care less about.

Eric Says: Maison Margiela or any designer sneaker that costs well over $300. This will be short because really I don’t care. I want to be clear, I am in no way criticizing these sneakers, the companies that make them, or the folks that buy and wear them. I just have absolutely no interest in spending $595 (at least) on sneakers. I want no parts in being exclusive in that way. Enjoy if you must.

Eian Says: Nike Air force 1 (sorry S.Y.N.ners), I know these are like the mecca of sneakers but for me I guess living in NYC has destroyed my image of the Nike Air Force 1. Growing up in the city this was a must have sneaker and I’ve had my fair share of AF1’s. This is where the name icy whites comes from. When these sneakers are fresh they are fresh, but once they get a scuff or the famous crease they go from a ten to a five real quick.

Wrath: Uncontrolled rage or hatred

Eric Says: Adidas and/or Kanye West. Sorry, I could not pick a specific pair or style here. My issue is truly with the company/designer. The lack of accessibility for any pair of Yeezys in spite of ‘Ye citing that as being one of the reasons he left Nike. The sneaker silhouette is cool and I would definitely like a pair in my collection but I’m past standing in lines and I’m not paying the outrageous resale ticket price. So until Kanye/Adidas make these kicks more accessible I will continue to rage red every time a different pair of Yeezys is released.

Eian Says: Don’t hate me for this but the Adidas NMD and all other sneakers that contain the sock. I have wide feet so I can’t wear any of them. I remember the first time I went to cop a pair of KD6’s Aunt Pearl. Once i had them in my hand I knew something was wrong, the sneaker didn’t look right and seemed to be too small. I tried to squeeze the life out of my feet just to make them fit in that damn sock. I had to try on a whole size bigger just for my wide foot to slide in, and that’s not even the big foot (because you know everyone has that one foot that’s bigger than the other). This is the same issue I have with every single sneaker that has the sock.

Envy: a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another’s advantages, success, possessions, etc.

Eric Says: Olympic 7s OG. This is the kick that started it all for me. In the summer of 1992 we were privileged to watch the greatest basketball team ever assembled tear the world basketball scene apart. It was also the summer my mom brought home the greatest pair of shoes that I have had the pleasure of wearing, the Jordan 7 Olympics. I was not a Jordan fan. I didn’t care too much about sneakers (I was nine) but opening that box, smelling the sweet aroma of new sneakers, and unwrapping each sneaker from the soft tissue paper used to protect the sneaker from all known dangers, I knew in that moment I was going to love sneakers forever. That was the beginning. I need to return these to my collection.

Eian Says: Air Total Max Uptempo: It was 1997 and I was twelve and I was with my uncle and cousin coming from the Gauchos gym (NY youth basketball at its finest) after basketball practice. We went to the mall to grab some lunch and stopped at Foot Locker on the way out. Once I laid my eyes on them I knew I had to have them, but of course, at twelve years old, I could never afford them. At that time I would never even ask my parents for them because the price was so high. I remember seeing kids older than me with them on and it killed me inside every time. I’m still on the lookout for them to this day. i know they retroed them circa 2009 but I missed out once again.

If there were a holy grail of sneakers that I’ve been longing to possess since forever, the Nike Air Max 95 in the neon colourway are definitely that shoe. When they came out I was too young too peel the required monies for them, I was all of ten years old and I simply didn’t have the audacity to ask my parents for them at any point during the many years they were on sale or on re-release.  By the time I got to an age where I could afford to pay for them myself, the OG colours were nowhere to be found, whilst I had a stint at First Sport (JD Sports) they were re-released in the kids sizes but not in adults, they seemed to allude me once again.

I fell in love with 110s (aptly named due to their cost) at first sight. I don’t know what I found most alluring to be honest, I just know that [get ready for the cliché] they had a certain je nais se quoi [love that phrase]. The gradient and subtle change of layers resembled the contours found on the ordinance map that we used in primary school when doing orienteering exercises on those school trips to the middle of nowhere. The bright neon accents against the grey was the most perfect combination of colours. Also something that nobody seems to admire is the sole of the shoe. Serious. I remember staring at each pair of 95s I’ve owned when I take them out of the box for the first time, and the sole at the bottom never ceases to amaze me. The colourway and seems to remind me of wasps. Not a big fan of wasps, there’s a pear tree outside my window and if its open they tend to find their way in so I end up battling to get rid of them but ye.

The Air Max 95 to me represents nothing but sweet old nostalgia, its the type of sneaker you aspired to have. It has that Jordan 3 black cement type of sensibility as it can magically enhance your state of being into somewhat of a superhero or other worldly. Those kicks have superpowers. Looking back it’s the quintessential London shoe worn by everyone from the Casual lads in the pub with the Aquascutum and Burberry, Rude Boys on the block who teamed them up with Starter caps, Armani Jeans and Polo Ralph Lauren Rugbys, to the Naf Naf, Oilily, Moschino and Iceberg beanies, this sneaker is nothing short of legendary.

I recently copped a pair of triple black 95s from END whilst trying on the CDGs, but when these drop I’m deffo gonna cop at least two pairs. How about you?
