Hello :) time for more fashion/beauty tips, this time about fingernails! I don’t have the kind of money to get my nails done, so I do my own. I like them to be quite long. Here are my tips for just that.
Always have those cuticles moisturized. Whatever lotion or cream you usually put on your hands should suffice! Make sure you put enough on your cuticles, and massage it in carefully. I moisturize my hands and cuticles after every hand washing. Don’t stop at the cuticle, massage into the whole nail. You can use oil, too. I like sweet almond oil, because hemp and olive might leave a greenish yellow tint, and coconut oil is comedogenic, but if those work for you, they work for you! You can also slug up with petroleum jelly before bed. I find that petroleum jelly is nice for my cuticles in general, not just with slugging :)
As my nails grow long, I try to let them stay in the natural, curved shape they grow in, for if I cut and file them to an almond shape, the edges are more likely to get nicks, which not only leave your nails vulnerable to catching on things and tearing, but it can also catch on delicate things like lace and snag it :(
Anyway, constant moisture has made a big impact on the quality of my nails. Applying protective polish (Sally Hansen ‘hard as nails,’ for example) actually seems to contribute to the layers of my nails peeling, no matter the brand, so I let them stay bare. Also, don’t use your nails as ‘tools.’ For example, don’t lift soda can tabs with your nail, try to use your finger itself. Don’t pick at stickers and such from hard surfaces using your nails, either— I notice that causes peeling layers, too. And of course, get your vitamins and nutrients. All of them! Not just biotin. Since going (mostly) vegan, my nails have been a pretty, pristine pink and white. Maybe that’s less about the lack of meat and more about the way becoming vegan made me pay close attention to getting all my nutrients. Perhaps my intake of lots of water lends to the wellness of my nails, too.
If you succeed in growing your nails long but one breaks partially and you want to repair it, look up “how to repair a broken nail.” At least three of my nails were practically papier mâched on when I had been growing them out for seven months (right picture) and a broken, short nail was visibly disorderly.
When I paint my nails, I don’t push back my cuticles. I just paint carefully right at the edge of them.
Take care of your polish bottles snd store them properly. If the lid gets crusty and hard to twist from dried polish, wipe built up polish away with nail polish remover. I use an acetone free remover from Nailtopia for the sake of my nails, but it cleans up the bottles just fine. And if your polish gets thick and goopy but you’re not ready to give in, perhaps try a nail polish thinner. I’ve never done so before, but I might. Follow the directions on the packaging :)
Allow your nails time to breathe; leaving them free of polish for a few days. Personally I leave mine bare for many days at a time and paint them the night before going somewhere— AFTER I’ve washed my hair, because getting your polish soaked in the shower, in your wet hair, may cause the color to peel off. Leaving them bare and only painting them when there are places to go also leaves me with more polish to use for just that. As soon as my painted nails start to chip about two days after painting, I remove the polish, rinse my hands, and moisturize, leaving my nails bare for days after.
Finally: I know not everyone has the ability to prioritize nail growth over, for example, working with your hands, and that’s okay. This is just what works for me :)

Day 1
Tumblr media
Since I was little I have struggled with body focused repetitive behaviors. First it was sucking my thumb, then biting my nails, pulling my hair out, and picking at my skin. These behaviors can become unbearable and often uncontrollable for me. This past year I have gone on a journey to take back control of myself and my body. I am extremely happy to announce that I have gotten my skin picking under control and it no longer interferes with my life. Now over the past couple months… I’ve been trying to stop nail biting. It has not been easy. I go for maybe a week or two before I go back to my old habit. I am sick of not making any progress.
In a strange little last ditch effort, I have decided to make a blog showcasing my nail growth and shitty nail art. I hope I can inspire others to take a similar journey with me.
Bless your hearts and thank you for reading 💕

What I'm doing to grow healthy nails after 20 years of biting them
Tumblr media
I'm at the start of my nail journey; I've had a nail biting habit since whenever I first had teeth (so going on 20 years now) because of boredom, anxiety, and rough bits as a result of biting keeps me in the cycle...
But I got a gel nail kit for my birthday this month and it's doing wonders so far! It was only about £20 from Amazon but a good place to start. I never found air dry nail paint to last which didn't motivate me to upkeep them.
Yes, ridiculously short nails being painted looks a bit silly, but it'll look great in a few months' time! Soon I'm going to get some BIAB gel to further help me, especially if the gel doesn't last. I've found neutral, subtler "professional" tones make it easier for me to keep them looking nice, because if they're brightly coloured I feel like they're being looked at too much! Which is definitely not the case, but it's the feeling that counts.
I found getting my nails done in a salon really helped but I am on a strict budget at the moment so I can't really afford the upkeep.
I also downloaded the Nail Keeper app. It allows progress pics and a timer from your last relapse, which has really helped me to realise how much I touch my face (which is probably the cause of my skin issues too!) and taking progress pictures makes me try harder not to ruin my nails again.
You can get a nail polish that tastes really bitter, but I never found it to help me and it seemed to rub off on everything (I had a very surprising bottle of Coke once).

I know some people like the wonderful @wishitweresummer who do acrylics but the thing is taking them off/maintaining them is difficult
So I’m thinking maybe a dip manicure???? I’ve never tried it and I’m also worried ab howbit will look w short nails
Any tips? I have a lot of nail supplies and extension material already so anything is fair game

An (almost) 8 year update
Tumblr media
I remembered my login for this account and felt like leaving a post for posterity <3 I started this blog when I was 15 and desperate to stop biting my nails. Even though I made a lot of progress over the short course of posting here, I definitely didn’t stop when I was a teenager. My BFRBs got a lot worse while I was a college student, worse than I ever thought it could get when I was a 15 year old. I turn 23 next week and haven’t bitten my nails in nearly 2 years. I am so proud of myself, and I wish I could go back in time to show my younger self this picture. To little Katie, you are in graduate school and are going to be a therapist (not a physicist, I know…sorry girl). You don’t tuck your fingers into your hands all the time anymore. You don’t constantly feel pain in your hands. You don’t bleed every day from deep, painful, infected spots on your fingers. You get compliments on your manicures and nail polish (that you are now very good at doing yourself). You did it :)

I have been growing out my nails for about a month so far and I am so proud and happy how they look. This photo was taken before I broke one of my nails🥺. Thankfully I was able to fix it before it fell off completely🤗. Super excited to wear cool darker nail colors this fall.

Introduction
Are you tired of waiting for your nails to grow? Do you struggle with brittle, breaking, or slow-growing nails? With the right techniques and knowledge, you can achieve long, healthy, and beautiful nails. In this article, we'll share expert-approved tips to help you grow your nails fast.
Tumblr media
Understanding Nail Growth
Before we dive into the tips, it's essential to understand how nails grow. Nail growth occurs in three phases:
Anagen (growth phase): 2-6 months
Catagen (transitional phase): 2-3 weeks
Telogen (resting phase): 3-4 months
10 Expert-Approved Tips to Grow Your Nails Fast
Tip 1: Keep Your Nails Hydrated
Dryness can lead to brittleness and breakage. Apply a moisturizing cuticle oil or nail cream regularly.
Tip 2: Eat a Nail-Friendly Diet
A diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins promotes healthy nail growth. Include:
Biotin-rich foods: eggs, nuts, leafy greens
Vitamin C-rich foods: citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries
Omega-3 fatty acids: salmon, walnuts, chia seeds
Zinc-rich foods: oysters, beef, chicken
Tip 3: Don't Over-Manicure
Avoid excessive filing, buffing, or using nail polish removers too frequently.
Tip 4: Strengthen Your Nails
Use nail strengtheners or base coats containing keratin, calcium, or vitamins.
Tip 5: Get Regular Trims
Trims help prevent breaks and promote even growth.
Tip 6: Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Exposure to chemicals can weaken nails. Wear gloves when using harsh chemicals.
Tip 7: Massage Your Cuticles
Massaging increases blood flow, promoting growth.
Tip 8: Use Nail Growth Supplements
Consider biotin or vitamin supplements specifically designed for nail growth.
Tip 9: Protect Your Nails
Wear gloves when:
Washing dishes
Gardening
Exposing hands to harsh chemicals
Tip 10: Be Patient
Nail growth averages 0.1-0.2 mm daily. Set realistic expectations and celebrate small victories.
Additional Tips
Avoid excessive exposure to water
Don't bite or pick at your nails
Use nail brushes to stimulate growth
Exfoliate your hands and cuticles
Nail Growth Timeline
1-2 weeks: Noticeable growth
4-6 weeks: Significant growth
8-12 weeks: Optimal growth
Conclusion
Growing long, healthy nails requires patience, dedication, and proper care. By incorporating these expert-approved tips into your daily routine, you'll be on your way to achieving the nails you've always wanted.

I broke a nail in the weirdest way, it was only snapped in the middle, not at the edges so it was just on a sort of hinge? Anyway RIP to my nail it was so long and now it's so nubby again, it's weird to mostly be past nail biting thanks to Invisalign making it impossible to do while wearing them but now I'm constantly cleaning out from under them and scratching and picking my skin instead 🙃 I mean it makes sense I've just traded one stim for another, i would bite my nails when annoyed or in concentration and now I just pick my skin instead 🥲

May 1st, 2024 I decided I was going to take better care of my nails. A little over a month later and this is where we are.
I don’t use many products and I’m very careful of what I do so that they don’t break.
