Eurovision Fact #439:
In 2011, none of the songs were entirely in French. However, the Lithuanian entry 'C'est Ma Vie' by Evelina Sašenko contained the following line in French:
"C'est ma vie/Je dis oui..."
The French entry 'Sognu' by Amaury Vassili was sung in Corsican.

Eurovision 2010s: 245 - 241
245. Amaury Vassili - “Sognu” France 2011
youtube
Ah, the elusive ~actual opera~ entry (not to be confused with it’s cousin, Pop/Opera). You may not know this about me but I’m actually a frequent patron of the Flemish Opera and have a pretty good understanding of how opera should be brought live and ... “Sognu” is not it lmfao.
You see, the main reason why opera can be amazing live is because it’s a very BOMBASTIC, over-the-top spectacle. If done right, it’s Cirque du Soleil with words. “Sognu”, which in itself is a VERY average composition, offers the visual of stuffing George Of The Jungle in a LesMis costume and calling it a day.
Don’t let those date rape bugs bite, mr Vassily...x
However, I do enjoy Amaury’s arc in that *everyone* apparently thought he was winning? Which is just baffling (I didn’t follow the 2011 preshow but I instantly knew Azer would win once I heard "Running scared” in the first Semifinal lol.), but hey, I always support my lovely underdogs and conversely when a contenderbeast falls flat on their face at the last second, I’m all in for it. And now it’s time to close this entry, which I’ll do with this A+ piece of Graham Norton commentary:
“Awwww something to cheer him up right at the en- it hasn’t really cheered him up, hasn’t it?” 🤔😬😶

244. Aurela Gaçe - “Feel the passion” Albania 2011
youtube
BLEDAR SEJKO <3333333456789 Oh wait, it’s the OTHER entry that features him, in a mute role NEVERMIND.🤭
Obviously, I have some ~fondness~ for "Feel the passion” but it’s mostly academic: I like the Albanian Screechy Harpy and Aurela Gaçe is a decent interpretation of the archetype (she’s without question the NOISIEST of the lot, if not the screamiest). I like how “Feel the passion” also showcases the typical Albanian sound, tiptoeing well between quirkiness, moodiness and datedness. There’s even an eagle backdrop!
Overall, “Feel the passion” showcases “Albania in Eurovision” pretty well. Too bad it’s not very good though, WHOOPS. ________________________________________________________________
243. Niamh Kavanagh - “It’s for you” Ireland 2010
youtube
Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
I want to BELIAMH IN NIAMH as much as any self-respecting insane eurofag, but bringing back a great winner to give her THIS song, no, it’s not to my tastes at all. 😠
However, I kind of appreciate it on an academic level? As much as “Feel the passion” is a showcase of Albania, so much is “It’s for you” one of Ireland: Talented vocalists, a pleasant/inoffensive sound, a faint charity angle. Oh, and all in the package of a really boring song/non-act. 🤭 Yup. Sounds very Irish to me. 🤭 ☘
And now Mum is Dad, you’re gorgeous too, come and soar, I owe you.

242. Nadine Beiler - “The secret is love” Austria 2011
youtube
If “What if Whitney Houston were white 🌚” were ever a question anyone would want to be asking, well, Nadine provides the answer anyway! She’s perfectly servicable! She sings well and doesn’t drag out her song needlessly. Not bad for an tribute act. 🙃

241. Sergey Lazarev - “You are the only one” Russia 2016
youtube
That’s right, I don’t even like original Sergey entry. Are you in tears? Well, too bad for you, I’m not changing my mind. 😊 RIP at least 74% of my follower count as a result of this update~
I’m kind of struggling how to even tackle this write-up? Humorous? In-your-face? Sassy? Smug? I suppose I’ll keep it honest and academic, because “You are the only one” is fairly good on the surface, but nevertheless, it has... problems.
“You are the only one” is, in my opinion, the most overrated entry in this entire decade. You see, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. It’s very competent.
However, I... don’t care about competence? I care about real humans that do *really human* things, by which I mean the Tamaras, the Elenii, the Månses, the Polinae: Talented actors who are able to sell their great songs through the sheer force of ~*P E R S O N A L I T Y*~ instead of pure technical singing ability.
“You are the only one” couldn’t be further away from that ideal for me. It misses something I hold very dear and that thing is authenticity. It lacks quirkiness. It is too perfect and that I find very unsettling. Russia’s entries lack that genuine disarming charm that many winners have and that is why they fail so badly at winning Eurovision, despite always being well-liked.
(ofc Russia being political assholes and shamless hypocrites and colluding blowhard bullies also factors into that, but I believe Eurovision is mostly apolitical in its decision making. If Eurovision were a political game, I’d imagine Russia would do significantly worse, in every year) Besides this, I think the staging is... really not that great either, WHOOPS. The act itself is a spectacle, but (1) it’s very clearly trying to impersonate “Heroes” and fuck that lack of creative direction (2) “You are the only one” is actually a well-composed song. It’s a clear hit. It sells itself. Especially when in the hands of Sergey Lazarev.
However, because the act pulls *VERY* hard into these tryhard visual effects it doesn’t need, the song becomes background noise facilitating the act, instead of the other way around and this I think is a really bad take on staging. Songs, not staging, are what wins Eurovision, but only if they’re good. Staging, not songs, is what can cause losses, but only if it’s bad. I don’t believe ‘Staging’ and ‘Song’ should compete with each other for attention, no matter how effective that strategy is as drawing in an audience. They should compliment each other and if a song is great, the staging should be simple.
So yeah overall, I am ranking Sergey right *here*, in the anonymous spot of 241st, with zero regrets. I have no emotions about him whatsoever beyond the academic “he is competent”; Russia tried way too hard to win and the overal result kind of sucks. And you know what else sucks? THUNDER AND LIGHTNING IT’S VERY EXCITING. 😈 Yes! That’s right. I dont even like that STUPID CATCHPHRASE!! HA! HAHA! HAHAHA! HAHAAHHAA! HHAAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHHAAAA!!!

Kat's ESC Discourse S6 E16: Throw Me Some Shade 13 -- Nadine Beiler, The Secret Is Love (Austria) All in all some good shit to return to the contest with. I didn't expect myself liking this but her powerful voice won me over. 12 -- Eric Saade, Popular (Sweden) Ok. Yes. I know. Debatable. BUT LISTEN. We all know that I am in this fandom for the trashy music. And what is Eric Saade if not trashy? This is, like, prime i-will-get-drunk-to-this-someday music.

Düsseldorf 2011 – Semi-Final 2
Host: Germany Slogan: “Feel Your Heart Beat!” Participants: 43 Voting method: 12-point system (50/50 system - combined) Format: 2 Semi-Finals / Grand Final = the top 10 of semi 1 & 2 + the Big 5 + host General Overview: The second semi-final produces a more decisive winner than the first (61.5% vs 55.4%). Sweden takes the crown here, and they top the televote as well. While the jury winner is Slovenia. There's only one country among the televote top 10 that was kicked out by the juries and that's Belarus. In exchange we have Estonia. Imagine if “Rockefeller Street” had been a non-qualifier. Also of note, Moldova barely even qualified (and they wouldn't have under the current voting system), yet they finished in 12th place at the Grand Final. The show includes a segment of Anke and Stefan butchering some ESC classics. That was kinda funny. The hosts point out that the already-qualified artists are chilling in their own reserved section of the audience. Which makes me wonder where they put the non-qualifiers. And the interval act involves break-dancing set to classical music. That's an unlikely combination. Quality-wise, the best entries of SF2 are above the best entries of SF1 – the first semi felt very average by comparison – but SF2 contains a fair amount of mediocre offerings too.
✓ Bosnia & Herzegovina: Dino Merlin - Love in Rewind Of all the feelgood/retro entries from the 2011 contest, “Love in Rewind” is my favourite. It's so adorable and heartwarming. Dino and the backing band provide natural, infectious positive energy on stage. From the excited foot tapping, to the trumpeter prancing about, to the collective arm wave at the end. The staging makes me smile. Moreover, the song is propelled by a triumphant, foot-stomping beat. It has a steady bounce, while the melody reminds me of the McCartney-lead Beatles songs. It sticks with me in a welcomed way. Hooks-wise, there's plenty of “wah-oh”'s, as well as the “your love... your love” bit. I also like how the instrumentation expands from the minimal opening verse, until it leads to a nice finale. On the lyrical side, “Love in Rewind” sees Dino reflect and appreciate the life he built with his partner (he was 48 at the time). He feels content and fulfilled. It's a positive outlook. The only issue is that Dino can't really sing... ✓ Austria: Nadine Beiler - The Secret Is Love This is Austria's first qualification since 2004, although they skipped four contests in between. Nadine delivers a towering vocal performance here. She projects big notes, while the arrangement intensifies as it goes. The song begins a capella, then the instrumental arrives, followed by the backing choir, and eventually the climax hits. But... I'm gonna toss “The Secret Is Love” into the “boring ballad” bin. It leaves me feeling cold. The instrumental and the melody are so formulaic, stale and predictable. It sounds like every Idol/X Factor ballad ever. Appropriate since Nadine won one of those TV singing competitions in 2007 (where she beat out Conchita Wurst in the finale). Furthermore, the lyrics are cliche and the message is uninspired. This is hardly the first song to convince us that love will solve all problems. As for the staging, Nadine stands on a platform above a floor of misty smoke, set against a dark backdrop. It makes her the center focus. At the Grand Final, “The Secret Is Love” wound up being a jury favourite but bottom 2 in the televote... × Netherlands: 3JS - Never Alone Onto chapter 7 of the Netherlands's long DNQ streak. This one also finished dead last in the semi-final. But, unlike their 2009 and 2010 oddities, “Never Alone” flops for being mediocre more than anything else. It also had to compete with Denmark who pulled off a stadium rock atmosphere more convincingly. The chorus on “Never Alone” wants to be an uplifting anthem – the song is about reassuring and supporting a despondent friend to lift their spirits – but the execution doesn't reach those heights. The hooks are lacking and the arrangement is generic. It isn't powerful enough and it doesn't stand out much. The song sounds dated too. Also, the lead singer exhibits some awkward stage presence. Everything about this live performance seems unpolished, from the vocals to the body language. × Belgium: Witloof Bay - With Love Baby Belgium is the unlucky 11th placer of SF2, but I am thankful this didn't advance. As I said in my review of Latvia's 2006 entry, a cappella groups are never going to appeal to me. Human-made sounds aren't enough to fill the void of an empty backing track. “With Love Baby” is a tedious experience, even if it isn't as messy as “I Hear Your Heart”. Most of this song is monotonous. The lyrics are meaningless and repetitive (the phrase “with love” is spoken 44 times). And the harmonizing becomes irritating and shriek-y towards the end. The abrupt beat-boxing interludes are an engaging aspect though. The staging, meanwhile, is as minimalist as the song. There's no props, no complicated choreo, and no stimulating images on screen. The ensemble seems to lack chemistry though. × Slovakia: TWiiNS - I'm Still Alive This is an unfortunate running order. My bottom 4 of this semi-final are all in a row. “I'm Still Alive” is so lifeless and uneventful. That song title is cruelly ironic. The vocals are lethargic (which makes them sound bored), while the instrumental is stuck on this monotonous looping drum beat for three minutes. The song is like a car sitting in idle. It goes nowhere. There's no progression beyond this one solitary spot. “I'm Still Alive” is supposed to be a triumphant moment. It's about pushing forward in life. It's from the perspective of someone who has endured and persevered. But the execution fails to capture that message. The melody is bland and the chorus falls flat. It's so basic too. Otherwise, the twins look elegant on stage. ✓ Ukraine: Mika Newton - Angel The 2011 contest has one of the weakest top 5's ever, with so many flawed and overrated entries. “Angel” is my favourite of the bunch, but it still doesn't like a winner contender to me. I'm surprised it placed 4th. It's an understated ballad with a low-key melody. The atmosphere is captivating though. The instrumentation is beautiful yet melancholic – there's something darker lurking beneath. It's also careful and intricate. Aside from the guitars and drums, it features music box twinkles, dubstep moments, and a desolate bridge. While Mika's vocal adds a layer of despair. Lyrically, “Angel” is a wistful love song, where the uncertainty of “... and you?” and the “we're in danger” line suggests something troubling. Dreams aren't reality and she's distracted by this nagging worry. Perhaps a loss of innocence? I wish the lyrics were more specific though. Otherwise, the chorus melody is sufficient and the staging is creative. The concept involves a sand artist constructing images that are projected on the LED screen. Mika's feathery shoulder pads are memorable too. ✓ Moldova: Zdob și Zdub - So Lucky More like SO ANNOYING. Moldova has a reputation for sending zany entries, and this one is probably the most extreme. The staging is certainly attention-grabbing, between the tall cone hats and the girl on the unicycle who's dressed like a fairy. It has that “WTF” factor. There's also some hypnotic witches(?) on screen. The song, meanwhile, is quite aggressive punk rock, where the lead singer shouts at the audience during the verses. He displays exaggerated arrogance and he brags about his possessions for the first minute. The chorus, meanwhile, is comparatively toned down. It's lead by some light horns. But in between all this, there's some obnoxious explosions of circus horns, alongside flashing lights. It's like the song plunges off a cliff. It's terrifying. In the song, the singer is entranced by an elusive woman. His mates congratulate him by shouting “SO LUCKY” multiple times. This is clearly intended as a joke entry. It's weird without being pretentious, but the song is so noisy. Zdob și Zdub also represented Moldova on their 2005 debut with their drumming grandma. I liked that one better. ✓ Sweden: Eric Saade - Popular Sweden wins the semi-final, they finish 3rd overall, and they nearly topped the televote. The juries held them back this time ironically. Still, 2011 proved to be a turning point in Sweden's trajectory, as it began their current run of frequent top fives. An 18-year old Ryan would have ranked “Popular” at #1 without hesitation. From a musicality perspective, it is THE bop of 2011. The production is a jam-packed, thunderous banger, and it is definitively 2011 dance-pop. There's that combination of rolling clacks, claps and whistles to build hype. The verses move like a washer on spin cycle. The bridge is dramatic and escalating with the shattering glass. And the chorus is MASSIVE. The erupting synths strike the arena hard. And the “I put my hands up in the light” part takes it further. The staging, meanwhile, has high production values; the calculated choreography in particular. Also, the glass box smashing is a nice touch and Eric has charisma. “Popular” should be a winner contender... but it's brought down by terrible lyrics and a stiff verse melody. The notorious example is that opening line (“Don't say that it's impossible / 'Cause I know it's possible”). Plus the idea of pursuing popularity to impress a girl feels inane. Eric's live vocals aren't the greatest either. 2011 sees Melfest ditch the regional juries completely in favour of the international ones (2010 had a mix of both). The runner-up in the contest was “In The Club” by Danny Saucedo (meh). More importantly, Loreen entered with “My Heart Is Refusing Me”, which lost out in Andra Chansen. She'll have her moment soon enough... × Cyprus: Christos Mylordos - San aggelos s'agapisa The Cypriot entry starts off dreary and solemn like a funeral. The singers are appropriately dressed in black to match. But then, just as the electric guitars kick in, the camera cuts to a screaming lady who's twirling a ball on a rope. It's a random moment but that's Eurovision for ya. The staging is also notable for how the singers continually lean on a 45° angle; which is highlighted by the circling camera shots. It's an intriguing visual. The singers also display a serious demeanour (and show off their arms) while standing on a foggy surface. Cyprus aims for a haunting/chilling atmosphere here. In the lyrics, the narrator experiences painful heartbreak where the wounds cut deep. The vocalists use a deadpan style to convey a sense of numbness. But... this song tends to drag because of it. The harmonies are too dull and it's not a catchy song. Still, I like how the guitar remains for the latter half of the song. It intensifies things as the desperation catches up. Plus the Mediterranean strings add a Cypriot texture. × Bulgaria: Poli Genova - Na inat How this failed to qualify is beyond me. Maybe the staging lacks something, I don't know. Although Bulgaria always struggled before 2016 (with the exception of “Water”). “Na inat” (“For Spite”) is a rock power ballad that captures exactly what spite feels like. Poli delivers a raw live performance here, while the electric guitar projects a fiery attitude. The song is about fighting against the oppressors. Poli is pissed off and fired up. She's firm and defiant. And I believe the words she's saying. “Na inat” feels like a protest song too. It's a gutsy rallying cry that proves how spite can motivate people. The switch from “I” to “we” pronouns promotes unity as well. I assume there's a political subtext to these lyrics? Musically, the chorus is an outburst of angst. It strikes instantly thanks to Poli's bitterness and the sustained guitar. The verse instrumentation is more restless by contrast. Elsewhere, the “yeah ehh yeah” hook works. The pyro is used effectively during the final chorus. And the bridge sets up that final chorus well, where the song briefly retreats to a lonely piano after Poli draws strength from a higher power. × F.Y.R. Macedonia: Vlatko Ilievski - Rusinka It's too bad Russia wasn't voting in this semi-final. The premise of “Rusinka” is straightforward – the Macedonian narrator meets a Russian girl and decides to learn the language for her. The lyrics even mention vodka and rakija, the famous alcoholic drinks of the two nations. And the instrumental switches to a Russian accordion in the bridge. This is treated as a joke entry though. Vlatko also sings into a megaphone at one point because... why not. Beyond that, the song is admittedly catchy. The shouts of “Muzika! Muzika!”, the “kakalin” / “kamaja” part, and the background “hah hah”s are the obvious hooks. And the backing dancers bring some well-coordinated choreography. It's an energetic song and performance. But it's borderline annoying and messy. The audio is so busy, with the symphonic strings, the metal drums, the guitar, the folk elements, and the pace changes. And the hooks become intrusive. Vlatko's raspy voice doesn't bother me though. × Israel: Dana International - Ding Dong For the second year in a row a 90s winner returns to underwhelming results. At least Niamh Kavanagh qualified. It appears Dana's name power wasn't enough. Indeed, I'm not really sure what this entry is going for? The dance-pop production, with its euphoric ascensions and skidding synths, implies it's a party banger. While the bridge contains a Hebrew prayer – the song's message is about following the guidance of your heart's desires. And the “ding dong”s (plus the “bells of your soul” metaphor) are corny. It's like this song is tying to be contemporary pop, spiritual, and campy all at the same time. But all these ideas undermine each other and it barely commits to being campy anyway. Moreover, the chorus is weak and deflating, when it should soar instead. The lame “ding dong”s don't help. I do like the bridge, though. It has an exciting build-up thanks to the drum stomps. But yeah, this entry falls short of its goals. ✓ Slovenia: Maja Keuc - No One “No One” is the jury winner of SF2 and it's my “winner” of 2011. The song undertakes such a compelling journey. It's a haunting ballad that progressively intensifies. The opening verse is driven by sharp, chilling piano notes, as Maja is alone on stage. She talks about being ditched on a one night stand. This section exemplifies her feeling of neglect. Following this, the guitars and the backing singers enter for the chorus. While the second verse allows the instrumentation to flourish. Maja, meanwhile, stands her ground. She asserts her independence and refuses to be used or taken for granted. The song further escalates during the “round and round” bridge (which is my favourite part). And in the finale, the atmosphere dives deeper and deeper. It captures a sense of sinking, helpless desperation. This is where Maja's lover comes crawling back but she turns them away. They blew their chance. She warns that they'll never find a relationship because of how they discard people. The lyrics are harsh but empowering. “No One” is a well-written song. Furthermore, Maja's stage presence is impressively fierce – she looks like someone not to be messed with. While the backing singers act as her support network. Her vocals are top notch too; reminiscent of Christina Aguilera. ✓ Romania: Hotel FM - Change I'd say this is the weakest of the retro feelgood entries from 2011. “Change” is a pleasant, sunshiny, inoffensive song but not a particularly exciting one either. The songwriters do make an effort, as evidenced by the eager, foot-tapping piano notes, the chorus melody, and even the clapping in the final chorus. The song is catchy enough to qualify – the “I can't change / I can't change the world alone” part does stick out. Plus the arrangement is organized and not messy. But the texture is so BLAND. Both the instrumental and the melody are uninspired. The faint horns don't add much. And the staging isn't special either. It's just “meh” despite the catchiness. As for the message, “Change” urges us to take responsibility for our happiness. To stop dreaming and procrastinating and to take action. And to do our individual part to change the world together. But it comes off as pushy? ✓ Estonia: Getter Jaani - Rockefeller Street Another huge favourite that flopped at the Grand Final. This is a brilliantly absurd entry. “Rockefeller Street” describes a surreal street party in Manhattan filled with unusual characters, and the staging illustrates this image. The layout involves miniature skyscraper props, even more skyscrapers on the LED screen, and it embraces a vivid colour scheme. Getter, meanwhile, exhibits some hammy facial expressions. She also does a magic trick. While the backing dancers execute some elaborate choreography. It's campy at times, like when they move as marionettes or curiously peek from behind the towers. But they also do hand stands and back flips. It's an energetic performance. As for the song, “Rockefeller Street” is whimsical and fairytale-esque. The verses follow a fanciful footstep rhythm, alongside clinking glass bottles. The pre-chorus builds anticipation via marching solider drums. The chorus is propelled by a peppy bounce. And the “keep movin” bridge is a release. There's also a switch-up to Old Hollywood music. There is a lot going on in this entry. But, even though the song contains like five different sections, they all transition seamlessly. The staging is iconic, the backing track is slick, and the “1-2-7-3 DOWN THE ROCKEFELLER STREET” hook is catchy AF. Fun fact: This was written by the same person behind “Rändajad” and “Verona”. × Belarus: Anastasia Vinnikova - I Love Belarus Speaking of absurd entries, this year Belarus offers some unabashed patriotism. In the song, Anastasia fervently proclaims enamoured love for her country. On the one hand, this is arguably propaganda, especially knowing that Lukashenko is involved with the Belarusian selection process. The original version also romanticized the USSR (it was disqualified for being too old, even after a lyric change). The present lyrics are more palatable, describing Belarus as unified and free as Anastasia affirms loyalty to her country. On the other hand, this entry is too catchy to hate. The collective chants of “I love Belarus”, with the ensuing rising melody, is infectious. The blasts of fire enhance the punchy nature of it. And it's performed with conviction on the live stage. Furthermore, the traditional instrument is a welcomed addition. And the transition into the final chorus is a highlight. Although, Anastasia is not the best vocalist. × Latvia: Musiqq - Angel in Disguise I have a huge soft spot for this one. The main singer (Emīls Balceris) is so charming, both in his body language and his vocal tone. He comes off as confident and personable. He can easily attract a potential love interest. He also shows off his vocal abilities, including the ad libs and the falsetto at the end. Furthermore, the backing track employs a fluid, glossy, bobbling rhythm. The pacing of it is optimal and it matches the relaxed and inviting vibe of the performance. While the verses emphasize the “I” rhymes. The lyrics are awkwardly phrased at times though (ie. the “kill me with killer kiss” and “love me with luscious thighs” lines), plus the rapper is pointless. It's not the deepest love song either. But “Angel In Disguise” is like a romantic dance at a wedding reception (the tuxedos give me that image). ✓ Denmark: A Friend in London - New Tomorrow Denmark earns consecutive top fives. I used to really hate this entry. “New Tomorrow” aims to be an epic stadium rock anthem with an inspirational message. The theme is similar to Romania's entry. The song encourages reassessing one's path and priorities in life; and to pursue meaningful goals over superficial or frivolous stuff like fame. But the lead singer uses an overly sentimental voice to sound empathetic. It's earnest but cloying. Like he seems eager to please. The opening twinkles are cutesy too. I also find the “come on boys, come on girls” hook annoying. That all said, the musicality is appealing. The chorus maintains an enveloping atmosphere, thanks to the sustained guitar, and the background “ahh ohh”s later on. There's also a very obvious chorus melody (which probably explains the placement). While the verses are lead by commanding drums. Elsewhere, the “we can change it all today” hook is a highlight. And the guitarist on the right is animated lol. “New Tomorrow” isn't anything original – it was even accused of plagiarizing multiple songs – but I can see why it did well. ✓ Ireland: Jedward - Lipstick Twins John and Edward trolled the X Factor UK in 2009 where they placed 6th ahead of Lucie Jones. Ireland subsequently capitalized on this gimmick by sending them to Eurovision (twice). The first time was fruitful, as “Lipstick” came in 8th place – Ireland's best result in 11 years. Jedward were known for their hyper energy on the X Factor, and they deliver exactly that on the ESC stage. They're like two kids on a sugar rush. Their appearance is also kitschy, with the red glitter jackets, the oversized shoulder pads, and the spiked-up hair. Otherwise, the relentlessly overpowering dance-pop banger production truly carries this entry. It drowns out Jedward's vocal limitations – their diction is a mess in the chorus for instance. The backing singers compensate throughout. Their eagerness on the “knoooOOOW” / “miiiIIIND” hooks is jarring too. As for the lyrics, the song uses a “hit and run” analogy to describe how the twins are going to proceed with a girl they're powerless to resist. Yeah this is a trashy bop. The bass-y synth line before the chorus signals oncoming danger though. And Ireland also makes good use of the LED screen. My Ranking: 01. Slovenia: Maja Keuc - No One ✓ 02. Bulgaria: Poli Genova - Na inat 03. Estonia: Getter Jaani - Rockefeller Street ✓ 04. Ukraine: Mika Newton - Angel ✓ 05. Bosnia & Herzegovina: Dino Merlin - Love in Rewind ✓ 06. Sweden: Eric Saade - Popular ✓ 07. Latvia: Musiqq - Angel in Disguise 08. Ireland: Jedward - Lipstick ✓ 09. Denmark: A Friend in London - New Tomorrow ✓ 10. Cyprus: Christos Mylordos - San aggelos s'agapisa 11. Belarus: Anastasia Vinnikova - I Love Belarus 12. Moldova: Zdob și Zdub - So Lucky ✓ 13. Israel: Dana International - Ding Dong 14. F.Y.R. Macedonia: Vlatko Ilievski - Rusinka 15. Romania: Hotel FM - Change ✓ 16. Austria: Nadine Beiler - The Secret Is Love ✓ 17. Netherlands: 3JS - Never Alone 18. Slovakia: TWiiNS - I'm Still Alive 19. Belgium: Witloof Bay - With Love Baby

Advent of the best ESC moments (23): 2nd place - The Queen of… Europe!
Conchita Wurst: Rise Like A Phoenix
[We asked you about your favorite ESC moments last month. Moments that touched you, moments that freaked you out and made you become an ESC fan. Many thanks at this point to everyone who participated and brought a total of 224 different ESC moments to the selection. We have provided and evaluated these with points in the ESC scheme - and now present your favorite 20 moments - a new one every day. See you on Christmas Eve!]
There are moments at the Eurovision Song Contest that burn themselves into the mind of every viewer forever, no matter how and where they are socialized. Conchita Wurst aka Tom Neuwirth created such a moment. A moment about which everyone has an opinion. A moment that moved many in 2014. A moment that has also exceeded its own tolerance limit for some. And “to blame” was basically just a beard on the face of a female figure.
After Dana International narrowly won the song contest as a transexual with her song "Diva" and her message of respect and tolerance, homosexuality seemed omnipresent in the competition. It was nothing special anymore that Drags had participated (such as Denmark 2007 or Slovenia 2002) or performances by clearly gay participants (such as Bosnia 2004 or Romania 2006). The voices of the gay community could not be obtained automatically. The superficial feeling in many western-oriented countries that at least by now most of society respects them has given the way to evaluate the contributions from the gay community fairly compared to the rest of the participants. The idea of tolerance was also often taken up by other participants.
In 2011, the then 23-year-old Tom Neuwirth appeared on the Austrian program “The Great Chance” as his specially created art figure Conchita Wurst. Six years earlier he had already participated in the casting show "Starmania" and reached the final, in which he also performed Anna Vissi's Greek contribution "Everything". As a result, he was part of the boy band "Jetzt Anders!" For a short time, but soon disbanded.
As in his childhood, he felt significant discrimination, which was to be reinforced by his figure of Conchita Wurst, the "woman with a beard". The jury for “The Great Chance” - above all the German rapper Sido - did not always have praising words for Conchita Wurst. In the end, Conchita finished 6th in the final. But the following year Conchita returned to the television stage and applied for "Austria rocks the song contest" as a participant for the ESC in Azerbaijan. With the tolerance anthem "That’s what I am" she succumbed in the superfinal to the lively fun performance "Woki with the Popo" of the Track hittaz with 49 to 51 percent. The Track hittaz were inferior to Nadine Beiler in the previous year with the more interesting “Oida Taunz!”.
But Conchita was remembered and, after Austria missed the final again in 2013, was chosen internally by the ORF officials and supervised with the task of reaching the final. In mid-March the bondesque ballad "Rise like a phoenix" was officially released, including a video that was not completely successful. While the song is classically based on divas like Shirley Bassey, the video lacked this class.
In Austria, Conchita's ESC participation was hotly debated politically and socially. All Austrian record companies also refused to publish Rise like a phoenix”, so ORF finally published it itself. Despite this commitment by ORF, Conchita’s potential has been massively underestimated until recently. Nobody seemed to seriously believe that they could win the Eurovision Song Contest with such a number.
Headwinds from some other countries were also not long in coming: Polish politician Jarosław Kaczyński saw the “figure of modern Europe” in the art figure (interesting if you think about how Poland was performing on the ESC stage in 2014). In Russia and Belarus, boycotts and a ban on broadcasting were called for, in Belarus there was even talk of a "breeding ground for fornication". To date, Turkish officials have named Conchita's appearance as a reason to no longer participate in the ESC. The Aram Mp3 from Armenia, who was declared favorite in advance, was initially unable to hold back and called Conchita "not normal" and "not suitable". At a press conference on March 20, the singer had spoken of "having to endure" being on a stage with Wurst. He only apologized to Conchita when he realized that he was losing approval for his title "Not alone" among the ESC fans.
Rarely has anyone used the media attention on site as much as Conchita did. The gay community seemed to be reuniting with her funny, but always sublime and tolerance-like demeanor. "I dream of a world where we don’t have to talk about unnecessary things like sexuality, who you love".
An indescribably dignified and fantastically sung performance on the Copenhagen stage did the rest and suddenly, after she reached the final, Conchita Wurst jumped to the first place in the betting odds. The only thing that seemed to the audience of the hall was that Conchita should win the competition. It almost disappeared that the Dutch contribution also indicated another surprise.
When the points were awarded, all the points mentioned were frenetically cheered for Austria, and points for the Russian Tolmachevy Sisters were booed loudly. Kati Bellowitsch, the points spokeswoman from Austria, finally announced the Austrian points with a glued beard, the moderators coined the term "Queen of Austria" early on. After the 34th rating, the moderators finally announced that Conchita, which has since been completely dissolved, actually won the competition.
"This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom. You know who you are - we are unity and we are unstoppable. ”Conchita also impressively used the subsequent award ceremony for her message.
"Rise like a phoenix" became a new hymn in the gay community and at least briefly reached the top 10 in the charts in some countries. The Dutch contribution "Calm after the storm" became commercially more successful and lasted for weeks, sometimes for months in various European charts, which strengthened the impression that Austria won mainly because of the person Conchita Wurst, her message and because of the absolutely perfect appearance. Since this win, Tom Neuwirth's female old ego has become a household name worldwide and has been able to speak and sing before the Federal Chancellery and the EU Parliament.
Tom Neuwirth, who says he is bored with something quickly, took some time and a lot of support to break free from the tight corset of Conchita Wurst. He had the feeling that he could no longer develop creatively and, in his own words, became unhappy. This year he surprised many with the new, much more masculine-looking project character "Wurst" and released the electro pop album "Truth Over Magnitude". At the center of this figure are a lot of creative and fetish-rich costumes, as they were also seen on the PRO 7 program "Queen of Drags".
It will be interesting to see what we can see from Tom Neuwirth alias Conchita Wurst. Conchita Wurst will remain an important and very emotional ESC moment forever.

Eurovision 2011 my top 43
Hello, and welcome to another episode of this ESC series, as I go back to May 10, 12 and 14, 2011, when the 56th edition of the contest was held in Düsseldorf, Germany, after Lena’s victory in Oslo last year. 43 countries took part, equaling the record of Belgrade 2008, and this year, Austria, Hungary, San Marino and Italy returned to the contest, the latter after 14 years of absence, and became part of the Big Five and an automatic qualifier. The stage that year was so huge and it’s also one of my favorites ever. The winner was Azerbaijan with Ell & Nikki and the song Running Scared, making this their first and to date only victory in the contest. And now, let’s review the songs!
1st Place: SWEDEN/Eric Saade-Popular (Real Placing: 3rd-185 points)
I know the lyrics of this song are so cheesy, but THIS IS AN AWESOME SONG, I love the performance, also Eric is one of my favorite Swedish singers and here his voice is so good, also he’s so cute. The music is so perfect and it’s a very catchy and engaging song, and it would’ve been a stunning winner.
2nd Place: IRELAND/Jedward-Lipstick (Real Placing: 8th-119 points)
Oh the epicness, this is one of my favorite songs from that year, catchy, memorable, they sing nice, the performance is so perfect, everything here works so well, and the music is so good, it’s one of those song once it enters your head, there’s no way you can forget it.
3rd Place: GERMANY/Lena-Taken by a stranger (Real Placing: 10th-106 points)
Our defending champion, this song I must say it’s a bit better than Satellite, it’s darker, more mysterious, and more mature, her voice is better here, the only thing I don’t understand is the performance, she looks so stunning and beautiful, but the dancers... still, this song is one of my favorite German entries from the 10′s and I think this deserved a better place.
4th Place: SPAIN/Lucía Pérez-Que me quiten lo bailao (Real Placing: 23rd-50 points)
Awwwwwwww this is so beautiful, the music is so happy, her voice is so good, the staging is okay and the lyrics are so perfect, this is one of the songs I play when I’m feeling down and lifts my spirit. I don’t know how this finished so low on the scoreboard because this is a very happy song. Sincerely this deserved so much love that night.
5th Place: UNITED KINGDOM/Blue-I can (Real Placing: 11th-100 points)
Another song that is so good, the music is so amazing, they are so great on the stage, the lyrics are so nice and everything here works perfectly, also this finished so high in the televote, surprisingly for the UK recent history. I think this deserved to be in the top 10 but indeed this was a strong year.
6th Place: HUNGARY/Kati Wolf-What about my dreams? (Real Placing: 22nd-53 points)
Again, how this song finished so low, it’s a perfect retro pop song for me, catchy, memorable, her voice is so good, her outfit was a bit weird but she’s stunning, the lyrics are so cool and her is perfect on stage, the music is what my pop heart needs to feel better and it’s a very inspiring song for me.
7th Place: SLOVENIA/Maja Keuc-No one (Real Placing: 13th-96 points)
Another perfect song, her voice is so powerful and strong, also the melody is catchy and makes me feel so good when I listen to this one. She’s so beautiful and the lyrics are good, I simply enjoy this song so much.
8th Place: SWITZERLAND/Anna Rossinelli-In love for a while (Real Placing: 25th-19 points/last)
Awwww so cute <3, this song is simple, catchy and I always hum this one when I listen to it, the staging is so perfect for this song, the music is so pleasant and wow, this song makes me feel in love actually, she’s so lovely on stage. Sadly, this came last, and I don’t know why because it’s a likely song.
9th Place: BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA/Dino Merlin-Love in rewind (Real Placing: 6th-125 points)
OOOOOOO, this is such a perfect and pleasant song, the music is so cute, the lyrics are brilliant, his voice is so good, the performance is lovely and IMO it’s one of the best Bosnian songs ever, it’s so cheerful, happy, and I always smile to this song. SITO.
10th Place: SERBIA/Nina-Čaroban (Real Placing: 14th-85 points)
OH THIS IS A CUTE SONG, I love the retro feeling in it and her voice is nice, it’s a very refreshing song and I’m in love with the background, so colorful and hypnotic, also this always makes me smile and it’s a very enjoyable song, I love her dress and the whole performance.
11th Place: DENMARK/A Friend in London-New tomorrow (Real Placing: 5th-134 points)
Another lovely song, his voice is so good, the music is cute and the lyrics are so beautiful, still it reminds me of a song from Andreas Johnson, but I always sing to this song and the performance with that giant ball is very cool and perfect, also Tim is so handsome.
12th Place: CROATIA/Daria-Celebrate (Real Placing: 15th SF1-41 points)
This might be an unpopular opinion, but this is so catchy and entertaining, I loved it since the first time I heard it and the performance is so perfect, I love the dress changing because it’s so weird. Her voice was a bit bad but this is so memorable and yeah, lovely. SALAD BREAAAAAAK.
13th Place: FINLAND/Paradise Oskar-Da da dam (Real Placing: 21st-57 points)
Awwww a very lovely and stunning song, his voice is so sweet, the music is calm, the performance is lovely because of the projection, also the lyrics are so good, I think it was a bit forgotten because it was the first song of the night. Still, this song is very cute.
14th Place: GEORGIA/Eldrine-One more day (Real Placing: 9th-110 points)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK OMG, this is a very good song, her voice is so good, the staging is perfect, except for those dresses, the music is breathtaking and surprisingly I enjoy the rap part because it reminds me of Linkin Park. A very good rock song.
15th Place: GREECE/Loukas Giorkas feat. Stereo Mike-Watch my dance (Real Placing: 7th-120 points)
Hi Loukas... this song is very ethnic, the music is so good, maybe the rapping was too much and kinda ruined the song, but when Loukas starts singing everything rises and delivers all the strength for this song. Also when he sings fotia I love the fact fire rises.
16th Place: AUSTRIA/Nadine Beiler-The secret is love (Real Placing: 18th-64 points)
This is one of the songs I always like to sing in the shower, the music is so charming and her voice is so stunning, I love also the staging because it’s so intimate and the backing singers lift this so much.
17th Place: SLOVAKIA/TWiiNS-I’m still alive (Real Placing: 13th SF2-48 points)
I must say that this song is much of my taste and reminds me of another song, and I find it good, the music is cute, they sing so good, sadly the backing singers were louder than them and it was a shame, also the performance is simple but sweet.
18th Place: FRANCE/Amaury Vassili-Sognu (Real Placing: 15th-82 points)
Oh this is another epic song, his voice is stunning, the staging is amazing, and it reminds me of a song from Lès Miserables, and the whole atmosphere here is perfect, sadly, it was a bit forgotten, also I have a soft spot for Corsican and opera.
19th Place: ITALY/Raphael Gualazzi-Madness of love (Real Placing: 2nd-189 points)
A long time ago I hated this because I thought it was boring and I had it lower on my top, but now I find the music brilliant, his performance is so jazzy and it’s a very relaxing song, also what a comeback for Italy, and if this won that night I would’ve lived with it, it’s a nice song.
20th Place: ISRAEL/Dana International-Ding dong (Real Placing: 15th SF2-38 points)
Poor Dana International, a former winner stuck in the semifinals, the song is good, her voice is as good as in 1998, it’s catchy, memorable, and I can’t understand how this song failed to qualify, the performance is very good and she looked like a true queen on stage.
21st Place: BELARUS/Anastasia Vinnikova-I love Belarus (Real Placing: 14th SF2-45 points)
I love this song, at first I didn’t pay attention to this but now I find it amazing, the music is so nice, her voice is a bit flat but this has a nice touch, the lyrics make me wanna go to Belarus and find it out by myself, the instruments in the music makes this so pleasant.
22nd Place: BULGARIA/Poli Genova-Na inat (Real Placing: 12th SF2-48 points)
AHHHH POLI <3 this song is very good, the music is so great, her voice is stunning as ever and the performance is nice and enjoyable, this entyr makes me feel so powerful and free, it’s a very strong rock song.
23rd Place: AZERBAIJAN/Ell & Nikki-Running scared (Real Placing: 1st-221 points)
The winning song of the night, and it’s my least favorite winner of all time, certainly it’s catchy, the music is lovely and they sing well together, but a winning song? No. Top 5? Maybe, in a year with a strong field of songs, this came as a surprise and even if I enjoy it, I hate the fact that they won with this song and not with other better entries.
24th Place: LATVIA/Musiqq-Angel in disguise (Real Placing: 17th SF2-25 points)
Again another good song, the music is so pleasant and the vocals were nice, the performance is a bit of a letdown but I like it, also the lyrics are a bit funny at some point but I like the song overall, it gives me a calm vibe and it’s lovely.
25th Place: ESTONIA/Getter Jaani-Rockefeller street (Real Placing: 24th-44 points)
One of the biggest flops of the year and I can see why, if you asked me 2-3 years ago, this was one of my favorite songs from 2011, but then more songs came in and I think my tastes changed, now I find it a bit annoying and her voice wasn’t on point that night, but the performance is so good and perfect.
26th Place: NORWAY/Stella Mwangi-Haba haba (Real Placing: 17th SF1-30 points)
Awww what a happy song! The music here is so playful, her voice isn’t the best here sadly but still it’s a very cheerful song, the lyrics are also cute and it’s catchy, this renews my energy and makes me feel so good.
27th Place: POLAND/Magdalena Tul-Jestem (Real Placing: 19th SF1-18 points/last)
This song is very catchy, her voice was a bit all over the place but still this song is so good, the music is so perfect and the performance is very good, I remember the dancing, and the chorus is nice, and this is in Polish which works for me so well.
28th Place: UKRAINE/Mika Newton-Angel (Real Placing: 4th-159 points)
This song is quite bland and it isn’t my cup of tea, but her voice and the performance are stunning and perfect, which lift this song so much, though I would’ve preferred to see Jamala’s Smile in the stage that year.
29th Place: ICELAND/Sjonni’s Friends-Coming home (Real Placing: 20th-61 points)
This entry always makes me cry because of the meaning of the lyrics, also the music is so lovely and they have a lot of charisma together, and the fact that this was dedicated to the original singer that died that year, makes this better for me.
30th Place: SAN MARINO/Senit-Stand by (Real Placing: 16th SF1-34 points)
A very lovely ballad, her voice is so smooth and the feeling here is so calm, the music is relaxing and it’s so cool, IMO this is one of San Marino’s best entries and deserved more than other songs that finished higher than this one.
31st Place: ALBANIA/Aurela Gaçe-Feel the passion (Real Placing: 14th SF1-47 points)
HER VOICE IS STUNNING, the music is so powerful and the performance is full of passion and fire, the chorus is so amazing and it’s very good, it’s a very nice song and it’s so pleasant, love her red hair too.
32nd Place: ARMENIA/Emmy-Boom boom (Real Placing: 12th SF1-54 points)
Another guilty pleasure of mine, I love the music, maybe her voice was bad and the performance a bit too much, and that resulted on Armenia’s first non qualification, BOOM BOM CHAKA CHAKA, this is catchy but a bit bad, still, I enjoy it.
33rd Place: RUSSIA/Alexey Vorobyov-Get you (Real Placing: 16th-77 points)
One of the many pop songs that year, and by the team of Poker Face by Lady Gaga, this song is enjoyable, his voice could’ve been better and the performance is nice, I like it, also he’s handsome.
34th Place: LITHUANIA/Evelina Sašenko-C’est ma vie (Real Placing: 19th-63 points)
Awww Evelina, this is a very lovely song, her voice is so strong, the music is like out of a movie or a musical, also the performance is simple and cute. If this was entered in other year, it would’ve done better.
35th Place: CYPRUS/Christos Mylordos-San Aggelos S’agapisa (Real Placing: 18th SF2-16 points)
The music here is so beautiful and the performance is so good, also he sings nice and it’s a bit memorable, but as with their song in 2000, I think this needed more to deliver it’s greatness.
36th Place: ROMANIA/Hotel FM-Change (Real Placing: 17th-77 points)
This is a cute song, the music is catchy and he sings so well, but still it’s a bit flat and a bit boring after a while, the lyrics are so beautiful but I think this song needed something else to really impress me.
37th Place: FYR MACEDONIA/Vlatko Ilievski-Rusinka (Real Placing: 16th SF2-36 points)
Ah this song is so nice, the music is so charming, and also I love one of the backing singers, Vlatko’s voice here sounds so good and the background is so nice, and the bridge is my favorite part. But still, I like another 36 songs more than this one.
38th Place: MOLDOVA/Zdob si Zdub-So lucky (Real Placing: 12th-97 points)
Wow, such a... weird song, sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it, but it’s memorable because of that performance, this is a bit mediocre compared to their 2005 entry, which I enjoy more than this one. Also, I want a cone like those.
39th Place: THE NETHERLANDS/3JS-Never alone (Real Placing: 19th SF2-13 points/last)
A pleasant song, but also it’s a bit forgettable, the voice of the lead singer is a bit bad and the music is a bit boring as well, not one of The Netherlands best recent songs.
40th Place: TURKEY/Yüksek Sadakat-Live it up (Real Placing: 13th SF1-47 points)
I like the music on this one so much, but I still think it’s a bit mediocre because of the main vocalist voice, it’s a bit flat, also it’s Turkey’s only non qualification, and I see why it happened.
41st Place: BELGIUM/Witloof Bay-With love baby (Real Placing: 11th SF2-53 points)
I admire the talent of the people that can sing a capella, but, as with the Latvian entry in 2006, it’s one of the genres I can’t listen at full, they sing nice, sadly, not my cup of tea.
42nd Place: PORTUGAL/Homens Da Luta-A luta é alegria (Real Placing: 18th SF1-22 points)
This is such an interesting and weird song, the lyrics are brilliant, and the music is enjoyable, but I can’t place it higher because of the performance and my overall impression of this song, a nice message with this one.
43rd Place: MALTA/Glen Vella-One life (Real Placing: 11th SF1-54 points)
I always try to like this song, but sadly there’s nothing here to capture my attention, I just like the intro and then everything goes bad, he has such a nice voice and charisma, but I can’t connect with this song.
