Dr Nye is a character that I find really interesting, because it represents SO fucking much about how certain types of people are treated in media and how that changes over time. ALLOW ME TO ELABORATE FURTHER -

One thing that immediately struck me about Nye way back when I was reading Mortal Coil is that it was really clearly an early rendition of a nonbinary character. And I thought that that was actually quite interesting, because I don’t think that there were many queer characters in media in 2010 (although there were plenty of queer-coded ones, but we can get into that later), let alone characters who were clearly coded to be nonbinary.

Was Nye a good representation of a nonbinary person? Nope, it was subject to pretty much all the treatment that early examples of queer characters were subjected to. Most notably being that, much like many Disney movie villains and similar queer-coded characters, it was depicted as a creepy villain. Everything about the way it is described and the environment it chooses to work in screams horror and it’s treatment of Valkyrie is abusive.

There’s also something to be said about how many early nonbinary (and asexual and autistic coded) characters were depicted as inhuman, which is a trope that still kind of continues today. Nye isn’t even human, it’s a bizarre, misshapen creature called a Crenga instead. This is also used to add to the creepiness factor that I talked about earlier.

And on a bit of a smaller note, it also gets misgendered quite a bit (?) but never seems to care what other people think of it. It’s interesting to see, reading about it felt like a time capsule.

And this character, Nye, is in stark contrast to Never, who debuts in Resurrection a mere seven years later. I myself am not genderfluid and so cannot fully account for how accurate of a depiction Never is, but he is so clearly shown in SUCH a different light from Nye and she honestly acts like a bunch of queer highschoolers that I’ve known.

And as I said, the difference between these two books was seven years. Not even a decade. Nye was so interesting to me because it was a look into the past of how non-cis characters were treated, but Never made it even more interesting for me because it drew even clearer lines in the sand just how much more accepting society became of queer people in media in those few years.

i do always have new year's eve plans every year like i always leave my apartment. but. before you recalibrate your internal conception of me. let me just say. the plans are to play board games with a middle-aged couple and their daughter. and sometimes we bake or sew. it's really fun and they feed me well and that's exactly what i'm looking for.
