Pro Wrestling Illustrated: October 1993
IN FOCUS
WITH CRAIG PETERS
WHAT MAKES YOU WATCH WRESTLING?
[Jim Ross, a worthy addition to the WWF]
Back in the August 1993 issue, I asked readers to give some serious thought to the questions, “What makes you tune in to wrestling on television?” and “What makes you attend wrestling in the arenas?”
I received quite a few interesting letters on the subject, and would like to turn my entire column this month over to your responses to those questions.
A big part of the reason why I watch the WWF television is to keep up on the feuds, wrote Joseph Gurcsik of Haddonfield, New Jersey. I like seeing who got jumped, who got put in their place and to see wrestlers working their way to the top. Jim Ross was also an excellent addition to the commentators.
With the WWF there is nothing so important that it cannont be videotaped and viewed later, Joseph continued. WCW, though, is a television show which is not to be missed, especially the Saturday and Sunday evening shows. With WCW, I go to the arenas and watch it on television for completely different reasons. Watching the wrestling moves is incredible. WCW matches on television are matches that I would like to see in an arena. This gives me more of a reason to go to the arena, because I know that I will not be disappointed.
Dave Szymanak of Binghamton, New York, however, has a point of view on the situation that is not so optimistic:
It used to be that I watched wrestling on television to see reasonably competitive matches. But with the focus on everything now leading to pay-per-view events all year long, I mainly tune in for updates on the supercards and for the interviews. With the exception of a few WCW Clash of the Champions specials and some Saturday night bouts, I would say the current state of television wrestling is terrible. If it wasn’t for the interviews and pay-per-view info, I probably wouldn’t watch at all. Then again, I would say it was pay-per-view that ruined television wrestling to begin with–and, more importantly, arena attendance.
About the only thing that would keep me away from the arena would be a skyrocket jump in ticket prices, Dave said, adding that sadly, I think I would be better off id i didn’t show up at all, because the quality of arena and television cards continues to sag. If it wasn’t for the fact that wrestling rarely comes here anymore, and if magazines like PRO WRESTLING ILLUSTRATED and PWI Weekly weren’t around, I would probably stop being a fan altogether.
[Doink]
I tune in to wrestling each and every week because I love this sport, which is human chess at its best, says Carl Louk of Prince George, Virginia. I love hardcore kick-butt wrestling, not circus-like atmosphere macabre cartoon family entertainment.” That is why I will only watch organizations that promote this kind of wrestling, like NWA,WCW and independent promotions like Smoky Mountain Wrestling.
Finally, here’s just a portion of a lengthy and thoughtful letter from Master Sergeant (Retired) D.E. McLeod of Baltimore who offers a fascinating decade-wide perspective:
I grew up watching wrestling in the 1950s and 1960s. I remember the formation of the WWWF and attended some of its early matches here in Baltimore in 1963. I stopped watching wrestling about the time Pedro Morales was WWWF champion. While stationed in Massachusetts in 1980, I began to watch wrestling again (the WWF). I was curious enough to learn that wrestling had changed a great deal since I last watched it.
I haven't been to a live card since 1963. Why? Lots of reasons. Basically, even though I watch both WWF and WCW (WCW being my preferred choice), neither federation is offering me anything that would make me part with 50 bucks.
I won’t even bother to discuss what disgust me about the WWF! But I will tell you what ticks me off about WCW. First of all, WCW still continues to be a WWF wannabe. There is absolutely no continuity in WCW. Many times, I watch a feud start to brew in WCW and then nothing happens. First there is a TV champion, then not. Next there are U.S. tag team champions, then not. For goodness sakes! Make up your mind! The love of money is the root of all evil in professional wrestling. I thought that it was a scream that one week Jim Ross was telling me that WCW was real wrestling and not a circus act, then the next week he was broadcasting for a three ring circus called the WWF.
My thanks to everyone who responded. I don’t know that we came up with any definite answers to my questions, except perhaps the fact that everyone has a different and individual reason for watching this sport we all love so much.

holiday travelling and everything once again makes me think about dustin and jim tripping into spending the holidays together.
got long, under the cut
like, okay, they travel out to chicago for wednesday’s show and the plan for the both of them is to immediately fly back to their respective families the next morning. but, uh oh, big snowstorm cancels jim’s flight to jersey, stranding him in chicago....
but there’s room on dustin’s flight to kentucky....he could.....come with him. dustin’s mom would be pissed if he abandoned his “””””friend”””” on the holidays after all, he’d never hear the end of it if she got word. of course she doesn’t know that they’re a loose item, dustin being nervous to put a name to it, jim being infinitely patient with the whole thing because it’s not like he’s in any real rush to like. get married and have kids or anything like that. but his mom will ask about his friends, and if he’s like “yea, greg made it back to his girlfriend but jim got stranded in chicago because of the snow”, she’d flip a lid and he’d never hear the end of it.
plus...it would be rude to just. leave jim to have a sad hotel holiday...that wouldn’t be nice at all.
so this is how dustin somehow brings a guy home for the holidays, his biggest worry and the reason why he stays closeted. but it’s like. no big deal. sure, his family thinks they’re just friends, but jim is slotting right in, he’s pouring dustin’s grandma a big glass of wine, helping his mom with the potatoes, being a real charmer.
jim, meanwhile, realizes that this is how he can backdoor himself into just...being dustin’s boyfriend.
they put jim on an air mattress on dustin’s childhood bedroom floor, dustin shoved up in the too-small full sized bed, staring up at the ceiling. he still has some old posters that are starting to peel themselves off the wall, some old baseball participation trophies collecting dust on his dresser. jim’s flipping through some of the ancient indie flyers that feature baby dustin, nwa mid-south, chikara, shit that he didn’t think he would’ve saved but we all know dustin’s sentimental.
and it’s all so weird for dustin, his best friend, the guy he hooks up with and has ~feelings~ for, hanging out in his childhood bedroom, looking at his stuff from before he knew him, from when they’d just met. he brought a guy home for the holidays. his family doesn’t quite know it, but...he did. or it feels like he did.
anyway, they kiss about it a little right there in dustin’s childhood bedroom, and agree to maybe work on them a little. and maybe they’ll be more intentional with the next family holiday trip.

From Football Star To The Loose Cannon: The Story Of Brian Pillman
TW: Guns , Death, Mentions of Disease
In honor of what would’ve been Brian Pillman’s 62nd Birthday, this article is about his life and career.
Brian William Pillman was born on May 22,1962 in Cincinnati , Ohio to a Welsh woman, Mary. He had a brother named, Phil, and three sisters named Linda , Angie , and Susan. Pillman’s father tragically passed away from a heart attack when Brian was only three months old. As a child , Brian was admitted to the hospital multiple times due to developing throat polyps and having to have multiple surgeries. The only time he would be able to spend time at home was during Christmas. Mary sent her son to a public school so he would be able to spend some time with his friends and soon, he became the only Presbyterian in his Catholic family. Pillman was also an athletic child, participating in various sports such as hockey and basketball. However , Pillman dealt with bullying from other students due to having a raspy voice from having multiple surgeries. Mary encouraged her son to learn to stand up for himself by enrolling him in boxing lessons. Pillman soon found himself excelling at football.
Pillman graduated from Norwood High School in Norwood , Ohio, a suburb of his hometown of Cincinnati. He was a standout as a defensive lineman for Miami University in Oxford , Ohio , and soon being drafted by the NFL ‘s Cincinnati Bengals in 1984. He was a free agent during this time period. Pillman also won the Ed Block Courage Award for his team. He also played for the Buffalo Bills during preseason in 1985. Thus, being released from the team before the season started. Pillman also played football in the Canadian Football League for Calgary Stampeders in 1986. During his time in college, Pillman was roommates with Baltimore Ravens head coach, John Harbaugh. His jersey numbers were 41 and 58.
Once Pillman’s football career came to an end, he stayed in Canada and began his professional wrestling career. He was trained by legendary wrestling promoter Stu Hart and his family in the legendary Hart Dungeon. Nevertheless, Brian made his debut in the Hart Family owned wrestling promotion, Stampede Wrestling in November of 1986. His first tag team partner was Bruce Hart, Stu’s son and the brother of Bret and Owen Hart. Their tag team name was called Bad Company ( not to be confused with the other wrestling tag team called Badd Company. ) . Pillman and Hart won the tag team championship for the promotion in 1987 , their reign ending in 1987. Pillman used his then girlfriend , Trisa Hayes ( soon to be known as Beulah McGillicutty ) , as his sibling to get over with fans and as a Babyface. He left Stampede in 1988 and joined Jerry Jarrett’s Continental Wrestling Association ( CWA ) . He briefly became part of the New Japan Pro Wrestling ( NJPW ) roster in 1989.
Pillman returned to America in June of 1989 and became a member of the World Championship Wrestling roster ( WCW) and earned the nickname ‘ Flyin’ Brian ’ due to his aerial ability and skills as an athlete. He was one of the first wrestlers along with Bobby Eaton to incorporate Lucha Libre skills into his wrestling move set. He held the NWA United States Tag Team Championships along with a wrestler named The Z - Man in February and May of 1990. Pillman soon started a storyline with Barry Windham , who he started to harass while dressed as a character named the Yellow Dog after losing a ‘ Loser Leaves WCW ’ match, thus, Pillman was reinstated. He also held the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship in 1991 and 1992. Pillman soon turned Heel in 1992 . In 1993 , Pillman formed a team with ‘ Stunning ’ Steve Austin ( soon to be known as Stone Cold Steve Austin ) , being known as the Hollywood Blonds. They feuded with teams such as Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas , and The Four Horsemen. They separated the same year. Pillman became a Babyface during this time and feuded with his old tag partner.
In late 1994, Pillman joined the Extreme Championship Wrestling ( ECW ) and teamed with Shane Douglas as a part of the talent swap between WCW and ECW. Pillman and Douglas were managed by the ‘ Sensational ’ Sherri Martel. Pillman returned to WCW in 1995 under the name California Brian. This gimmick was scrapped within a week of his return to the company. He soon became a tweener and feuded with wrestlers such as Eddie Guerrero and Buff Bagwell. He also formed a team with Arn Anderson and feuded with Ric Flair. The Four Horsemen soon reunited with Pillman and Chris Benoit being new members alongside Anderson and Flair. Pillman soon developed his ‘ Loose Cannon Gimmick ’ the same year. He returned to ECW in 1996.
Brian Pillman was signed to Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation in 1996. This signing was announced at a press conference along with Marc Mero’s signing to the company. Pillman was on the commentary desk for a period of time due to having a broken ankle. He soon moved into a role as wrestler after going after an unruly fan in June during an episode of WWF Superstars. His major feud was with his long time friend and former tag partner , Steve Austin. During the storyline , he took the side of Austin’s nemesis, Bret Hart. During their feud , the infamous ‘ Pillman’s Got A Gun ’ angle took place. This angle was when Pillman pulled a gun during an interview with Kevin Kelly and Austin visiting Pillman and his family . The WWF Camera Crew and Kelly surrounded the house to protect Pillman and his family during this incident. Austin was soon attacked by Pillman’s friends. Vince McMahon , WWF , and Pillman all had to issue an apology due to the incident.
Pillman took some time off from the company and returned in 1997 to align himself with his long time friends , Bret and Owen Hart , The British Bulldog , and Jim The Anvil Neidhart. They became known as the new Hart Foundation. Pillman was the only member of the faction to not be blood related or married into the famous family. He also feuded with Goldust , with their biggest match having the stipulations of Marlena being Pillman’s valet for a month if Goldust lost and Pillman leaving the WWF if he lost. Pillman won and had Marlena as his valet for a month.
In 1997, Pillman and his wife , Melanie , were in the midst of a hostile divorce. Melanie claimed that this was going to be a wake up call for Brian. They still lived together with Pillman living in the basement. Brian Pillman would be found dead in his hotel room by the maids on October 5 , 1997 in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was 35 years old. Pillman’s cause of death was found to be a heart attack. Thus , Steve Austin explained that this caused by a case of undetected Heart Disease. This condition also killed his father.
Pillman’s legacy lives on for the new generation of fans. WWE Superstar, Lexis King , is the son of Brian Pillman. King is currently signed to the NXT brand.
My Final Thoughts:
Brian Pillman was one of those wrestlers who I call ‘ Once In A Lifetime’ . He had the total package as a wrestler which I love. I wish I could’ve seen him live. I hope this article did him some justice.
Love You All,
- Kay

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to the weekend!
Wow! We are here again: Friday! Where did that week go! Time is absolutely flying by! Tomorrow will be October!
Thursday was interesting. I became a talking head! I became one of those people giving a very short interview about the life and legacy of a dead celebrity. Following the death of Coolio (R.I.P.) I did interviews with LBC, Times News, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC TV News, BBC World News, Channel Four News, Talk TV and BBC Radio Sheffield. Quite an experience!
Now, obviously, Coolio was not a political rapper. He wasn’t NWA or KRS1 or Public Enemy, Coolio was a different kind of guy. He was signed to Tommy Boy, the same label as De La Soul, and they made happy, hippy-dippy, whimsical and humorous hip hop, and there’s definitely a place for that. Coolio’s legacy is that he let young hip hop artists know that being laid back and reflective was cool too.
Yesterday was a really good day! I had the house to myself. As it happens, I took care of my family: went food shopping, washed clothes, cooked dinner, but I also enjoyed moments of quietness and stillness. At times yesterday, I just sat and thought. Sat very still, just me and my thoughts, trying to work out what I needed to do, trying to work out what I wanted to do, thinking about friends past and present. At points, just looking through the window, daydreaming. It felt great. Haven’t done that in ages. I would advocate it very strongly.
Denmark’s kit sponsor, Hummel, have sent out a powerful message ahead of the Qatar World Cup. “With the Danish national team’s new jerseys, we wanted to send a dual message. They are not only inspired by Euro 92, paying tribute to Denmark’s greatest football success, but also a protest against Qatar and its human rights record. That’s why we’ve toned down all the details for Denmark’s new World Cup jerseys, including our logo and iconic chevrons. We don’t wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives. We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn’t the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation.”
Okay, I admit it! Whenever I see animal videos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, I always stop and watch. I love animals! We don’t have pets in my house because we don’t have time or space but I simply love all animals. Seriously, even the big, scary ones! And I’m still haunted by videos of animal cruelty that I’ve seen. For some reason, I can’t erase those images from my brain. It makes me think back to the Kurt Zouma video, which did not offend me in any way at all. We are now living in this world where ‘innocent until proven guilty’ no longer exists. We’re living in snap judgement world. It could happen to me and it could happen to you. People are so quick to pass judgement without a pause for contemplation, without hearing the other side of the story, without all the facts. Back in the eighties, I distinctly remember the face of a black man on the front cover of The Sun and one word in huge letters ‘Monster’. Needless to say, within weeks, the man was proven innocent.
Hope you can join me tomorrow at 1.00 p.m. for ‘The A-Z Of Mi-Soul Music’. The second part of The Letter J, executive produced by Charlotte Rabin who, back in the day, was a hardcore raver, so get ready for some uptempo tunes!
I post this status every single week day, Monday through Friday. If you want to read it but you don’t see it, just go to my profile. I’m always here!
Have a fabulous and funky Friday! I love you all. You’re probably thinking, “You don’t even know me!” but, if people can hate for no reason, why can’t I love?

Mania Weekend: Friday April 1
This is part 2 of my rundown of the minor-league shows streaming from Dallas this weekend. (See part 1 here.) There are a lot of shows going on, and I'm seeing new matches announced right up the last minute. For the latest, check out each promotion's Twitter feed.
LA Fights vs. JCW
12pm EDT (11am CDT) - $9.99 on Fite or part of The Collective bundle (12 shows for $139.99)
LA Fights is a Los Angeles-based indy promotion created last year as a sort of subsidiary to GCW. The idea is to build up West Coast indy talent in the same way GCW's New Jersey group JCW does. So now they're going to fight. Most of the names on this show would be prelim wrestlers on a GCW show, so don't expect a lot of star power.
The main attraction (for me, anyway) is a 7-on-7 elimination tag match, although I can't find a list of all the participants' names.
Zicky Dice's Trouble in Paradise 2
2pm EDT (1pm CDT) - Free on Twitch.tv/zickydice
Remember that weird Zicky Dice guy from NWA Powerrr a few years ago? Well, he's a prelim guy on Impact! And also now he runs his own indy shows. I missed the first one, but this one has a bear, so I gotta check it out this time. And you can't beat the price...
Rich Swann vs. Scotty 2 Hotty
Masha Slamovich vs. a bear
EFFY vs. Mike Bailey
Lince Dorado vs. Black Taurus
and more!
GCW: For the Culture 3
4pm EDT (3pm CDT) - $13.99 on Fite or part of The Collective bundle (12 shows for $139.99)
This is GCW's showcase for Black wrestlers on the independent scene. If you're bummed out about AEW cutting Big Swole or WWE cutting Hit Row, then you ought to check this show out because they're all on it.
Impact women's world title: Tasha Steelz vs. Big Swole
Rich Swann vs. JTG
AJ Francis (Top Dolla) & Tehuti Miles (Ashante Thee Adonis) vs. Shane Taylor & O'Shay Edwards
Trish ADora vs. MJ Jenkins
and more!
NJPW STRONG: Lone Star Shootout
6pm EDT (5pm CDT) - $14.99 on Fite or part of the WrestleCon bundle ($74.99 for 5 shows)
I've completely lost track of New Japan's US branch, but they seem to be carrying on quite well as they emerge from the closed-set shows. This isn't a blowaway card by New Japan stards, but the intrigue of Killer Kross starting his post-WWE career by calling out Minoru Suzuki is enough to get me interested.
Tomohiro Ishii vs. Chris Dickinson
Jay White vs. Mike Bailey
Minoru Suzuki vs. Killer Kross
and more!
ROH: Supercard of Honor
8pm EDT (7pm CDT) - $29.99 on Fite
This is arguably the centerpiece of the non-WWE programming in Dallas this weekend, if only because it's ROH's first show under the ownership of AEW's Tony Khan. Everyone will be looking for any clue what ROH's future will look like. For an ROH pay-per-view, the card is remarkably all-killer, no-filler. But the main attraction is going to be the hype for any potential surprise announcements.
ROH men's world title: Jonathan Gresham vs. Bandido
ROH tag title: Jay Briscoe & Mark Brsicoe vs. Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler
interim ROH women's world title: Mercedes Martinez vs. Willow Nightingale
ROH pure title: Josh Woods vs. Wheeler YUTA
Swerve Strickland vs. Alex Zayne
and more!
GCW: Gringo Loco's The Wrld on Lucha
8:30pm EDT (7:30 pm CDT) - $13.99 on Fite or part of The Collective bundle (12 shows for $139.99)
GCW always seems to have a token lucha match on their big shows, and they're always wild and crazy. So here is a show full of nothing but lucha matches. I think the main draw here is Psycho Clown vs. Dr. Wagner Jr., in that they got into a (possibly real?) fistfight during a GCW show a couple of months ago.
Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Psycho Clown
Johnny Caballero (John Morrison) vs. Jack Cartwheel
Laredo Kid & Rey Horus & ASF vs. Gringo Loco & Flamita & Abismo Nego Jr.
Psicosis vs. Tony Deppen
and more!
Impact Wrestling: Multiverse of Matches
9pm EDT (8pm CDT) - $19.99 on Fite or part of the WrestleCon bundle ($74.99 for 5 shows)
Impact isn't as big as AEW, and it isn't as hot as GCW, and its future isn't as fascinating as that of ROH. But the one thing they've got going for them is that they've been right in the middle of a lot of "forbidden door" crossover stuff, so the name of this show is a savvy marketing move. This is probably going to be an underrated show.
Matt Cardona (Zack Ryder) & Chelsea Green vs. Mickie James & Nick Aldis
Josh Alexander & JONAH (Bronson Reed) vs. Moose & PCO
Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows vs. Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe
Tomohiro Ishii vs. Eddie Edwards
and more!
GCW: Joey Janela's Spring Break 6, Part 2
12:59am EDT (11:59pm CDT) - $19.99 on Fite or part of The Collective bundle (12 shows for $139.99)
The main attraction here is the return of the Clusterfuck battle royale, where Janela tries to book as many goofy surprise entrants as possible. So far I've seen the Invisible Man and Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp announced for the show. It will probably get weirder.
Clusterfuck battle royale
Minoru Suzuki vs. EFFY
Matt Cardona vs. Chris Dickinson
Tony Deppen vs. Biff Busick (Oney Lorcan)
PCO vs. Mike Bailey
and more?

UNCUT COMEDY WITH T.K. KIRKLAND
Tumblr media
player 2 player interview
On February 9th, 2019 T to da Mother f***ing K performed in South Florida at the Dania Beach
Casino and I Regina Rohena of  Dagr8fm was there to get the backstage exclusive interview!!
Grabbing the backstage footage was The GlamBoss herself,  who had the scoop on
what’s the events up coming around Soflo Night Life while I got to personally sit down with TK Kirkland and kick it Jersey Style!! Here is what I had to say about TK Kirkland.
TK is more than a comedian as I learned from my one on one interview. He is more like a Life
Coach. It’s not all about the laughs, it more about the lessons, speaking the truth, working hard
and not being afraid to put others in the game! TK has over 30 years of experience in the entertainment game, he has toured worldwide with all types of artists from Madonna to NWA. Trust he never forgets to share his knowledge of life and “putting people on” for the better such as other comedians like DL Hughley and Kevin Hart to name a few. TK has not stopped touring around the world and now he has ventured into the Podcast World with his own personal Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tk-kirkland-show/id1198223436 available on all streaming platforms. He is also in negotiations to start producing films soon and working on releasing a new CD. There’s really no stopping T to the Motherfucking K!! He torn down the stage at the Dania Beach Casino and a few audience members too. If you ever been to a TK Kirkland Show you know, no one is safe or
off limits. Especially, the Ladies! I won’t bore you with all these words just check out this Coruscation
House Production on DaGr8fm.com, behind the scenes video of TK Kirkland Player to Player
Comedy Show , a Full House Entertainment , featuring South Florida comedians Razor, and
(Miami) Larry Dog. “Convos” , sneak peaks and the Exclusive sit down Interview with ME (kiss) Regina Rohena

Ash & I are going to NWA to wish good luck to our boys on Friday before they leave for T*ronto on Saturday and just the thought of throwing on a hockey jersey with no pants and making a sign is literally the greatest feeling in the WORLD.
