does anyone use an mp3 player? do you have any recs i wanna stop using spotify/streaming services. i was looking at walkmans and while the NW-A306 would probs be my best bet its pricey and im worried about the screen. it also has streaming capabilities which i dont want to pay for features im trying to avoid. the NW-E394 is what i had a lil bit more in mind, but im afraid of storage and it doesn't have bluetooth :/// also it seems a bit steep in price for what it is.
#while i wont put every album on there but i have over 10gb and i dont think ive fully ripped my collection#i keep tossing the idea of getting a walkman and i wanted something a lil more “namebrand” lmao#they doint make ipod anymore right? also itunes is a lil annoying to work with at times#leaning towards saving up for the nw-a306 tho unless i find a cuter one elseware#i have so many cds/rip too many of them to just be collecting dust even with a mp3 i feel like they are getting use since i rippede them#txt

Music Player in 2023... Why Sony?
The convenience of Bluetooth streaming is great but it is constrained by how much data it can pump through its signal. Though portable music players are preferably used with wired headphones for maximal performance, wired cans have seemingly enjoyed a recent renaissance too.
Smartphones are great for convenience but they’re not necessarily great for sound. As they’re multi-taskers, able to perform a range of functions, that also means they are a product that’s a jack of all trades but master of a few. Support for higher quality music has become better in the portable space with what Qualcomm is doing with its Snapdragon Sound platform and Sony’s innovations with LDAC, but in terms of outright quality for music, you won’t find better than a portable player.
Sony’s announcement of a new and not too expensive Walkman is a sign that portable music players still have a function and a purpose, as well as reminding some they still exist. Most would assume that portable music players have (or are) going the way of the Dodo, slowly passing their way out of relevance. However, we’re still seeing specialists such as Astell & Kern launch new players every year, and just recently FiiO announced the M11S. While Apple killed off the iPod, the rest of the portable player market isn’t interested in joining the scrap heap just yet.
The NW-A306 has a battery life of up to 36 hours of continuous playback, a 3.6-inch display, and because it runs on Android, you can install your favorite streaming apps if you must, although that defeats the point of having all your music with you. You'll still need a computer to load your music onto the device, just like with the iPhone's Music app, but that somehow seems less annoying with a walkman than with a phone. It also has audiophile-level playback at up to 96KHz (more than double the sample rate of a CD), although that's probably not a difference you can hear.
But it's not all upside. For a start, you'll have to carry two devices if you still want to carry your phone. And it's possible that you kind of let your music library slip when streaming came along. I bought a used iPod a while back, and when I loaded up all my songs, there was no music from the last half-decade or so because I'd been streaming it all.
The convenience of Bluetooth streaming is great but it is constrained by how much data it can pump through its signal. Though portable music players are preferably used with wired headphones for maximal performance, wired cans have seemingly enjoyed a recent renaissance too.
In a wider sense, of this seems to have converged around a greater want for higher quality music on the go. We have for decades limited ourselves in this area as MP3 streaming and downloads were a step in the wrong direction, one that’s taken a long time to reverse. In people’s minds, the quality of what they’re listening doesn’t matter as much as having access to it. We have access to more music than we can fathom at the moment, the area that we need to beef up is the quality we listen at.
From DACs to headphone amplifiers and higher quality streaming services such as Tidal and Qobuz (we still wait for Spotify Hi-Fi to make its entrance), the issue of ‘quality’ is one of the frontiers that the music and audio industry is pushing towards. All these devices have the potential to make music sound better, so while my smartphone will still be my device of choice given how much it (rightly or wrongly) rules my day-to-day activities, when it comes to listening to music in its highest quality, I’ll be tuning in with my portable player to get the best experience possible.
On My View Point...
You may think that, there’s only a need of an audio enhancing software or a high end headphones. But on all every aspects, from nostalgic design, high end specs possible and even quality - Sony have managed to make it all happen in a capsule. And that’s it. For music lovers, this will be dream gadget for sure and so happy to see this upgrade on this formfactor which was really unexpected. And looking forward to have a glance of one of these in real. And that’s been it - Edwin K Jayesh

Sony Unveils New NW-A306 Walkman
Sony has introduced a new music player, the NW-A306 to the Walkman series family. The NW-A306 is designed for users looking for high-quality sound and style. Weighing just 113 grams, equipped with WiFi connectivity, a 3.6” touch screen and tactile physical music controls, it's designed to be used on the go whilst being immersed in a high-quality music experience. The premium aluminium milled frame on the NW-A306 provides superior rigidity for low impedance and precise, stable sound and solid bass. NW-A306 main features S-Master HX digital amp technology, independently developed for Walkman is compatible with the native DSD format. It reduces distortion and noise across a wide range of frequencies, for rich and full-bodied sound, further enhanced by new high-quality sound lead-free solder. Just like the latest Signature Walkman model, the NW-A306 applies a reflow solder containing gold, whose effect is significant in the overall improved sound localisation and wider sound space. To realise the music player’s evolutionary sound, a dual clock, film capacitor and fine sound register have been precisely placed within the Walkman. The NW-A306 uses Edge-AI (Artificial Intelligence), and DSEE Ultimate (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) which accurately upscales compressed digital music files to higher quality. The evolving algorithm now delivers even greater benefits for CD-quality (16-bit 44.1/48kHz) lossless codec audio. Restoring acoustic subtleties and dynamic range provides a richer, more complete listening experience. With further progress from its predecessor models, listeners can enjoy DSEE Ultimate for upscaling music, whether it is Wi-Fi streamed or downloaded. Plus DSEE Ultimate can also be enjoyed with wireless headphones. The NW-A306 features a longer battery life than previous models so listeners can immerse themselves in more of their music. The NW-A306 has a battery life of up to 36 hours of 44.1kHz Flac playback, up to 32 hours of 96kHz FLAC high-resolution audio playback or up to 26 hours with the streaming service app to meet user demand. Sustainability in mind Sony products are not only designed to be stylish but also with the environment in mind. No plastic is used in the packaging material for the NW-A306, reflecting Sony’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our products and practices. Pricing and availability NW-A306 will retail price for £350 / €400 and will be available to purchase across Europe from January 2023. Read the full article

@amplexadversary this is the MP3 Player (DAP -Dedicated Audio Player) that I mentioned!
The Surfans F20! This is a YouTube review of it and here is an updated pros and cons for it!
Here's another video comparing it to a more expensive Astel and Kern
Its cheap, durable, has good reviews and features for the pricepoint, and if you pair it with a nice set of IEMs/Nice Earbuds you'll be in business!
It has an HD Audio processor and it can play HD Audio file formats. I guarantee it's as good as - or most likely MUCH better than - your phone's audio processor. So already even with whatever earbuds you already have it'll sound better.
For earbuds YMMV but a set I've seen recommended by DankPods are the the KBear KS1's which are around $15 to $20.
The reviews indicate they have a V signature though which means that the bass and top end are boosted and apparently the bass can bleed into deeper male vocals so if you do a lot of listening to deeper male voices closer to the bass side of things they may be a bit muddled - and in general the mids will be slightly recessed in order to bring the bass and highs forward. If you're already doing this via EQ on your phone though (to hear the instruments/bgm of a song better) then you'll probably like them.
[EDIT : On the flip side though if you're already getting hearing loss then you might want to look for something that caters to the parts of music you have trouble hearing.]
I will say I remember the Surfans F20 being Under $100 (last saw it for $70) so I'm not sure why it's suddenly $125 now (maybe with subsequent models the interface got worse so they jacked the price on what was still selling? Or maybe when I was looking at it it might have been on sale?) But thats still really reasonable for a DAP that has unlimited storage and HD Audio that's RockBox-able and has Manual Controls/Buttons as opposed to a Tiny Touch Screen.
I don't own it myself but I've seen lots of great reviews and it's been on my wishlist for over a year.
Anyway. It's just something to consider if you couldn't find or get your old ipod to work.
If you found your old i-pod and got it to work, then I reccomend checking out DankPods's channel on YouTube as well as Elite Obsolete Electronics on YouTube - who has a website where you can buy parts for ipods or buy a pre-built pre-modded i-pods.
I have an older post about the model that I personally would buy pre-assembled if I had $300 or so dollars to blow.
Also sorry I thought I posted this the day before yesterday but it turns out I didn't so when I went to post today I ended up adding more on. :P
[Edit: Oh also also the replies reminded me: the Walkman NW-A306 is a great choice but is more expensive and a touch screen.]
Recently found out RockBox still exists and is updating, and since the shitty firmware was my number one concern with dedicated audio players that was all it took for me to buy one and see if it was still as easy as it was when I hacked my old clickwheel iPod (it was)
This thing is a metal brick with clicky buttons and a headphone jack, the little wheel actually spins and is VERY satisfying
Immediately put a sticker on the back and some washi tape, now I just have to find something the right size to cover the logo on the front while looking cute

Sony NW-A306 $350 Review
https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/sony-nw-a306 The Sony is adept enough to turn its hand to various genres and even discern the differences in file qualities, but it doesn’t make a meal out of it at all. In fact, there’s a familial throughline from the high-end NW-WM1ZM2 to the A306 in terms of just how mature and capable it’s able to sound. We can spot the same sound signature, even if the…
