abt the green sibs
do you know what the most absurd thing is? i have never felt love between the siblings this season as such, but now that they are most broken and their relationship is destroyed? i see their bond. it's crazy, but it's true. aegon did not want his sister to be his wife, but he was always gentle with her, he is angry with his brother, but i still believe that love for him remained in his heart, albeit poisoned with a mixture of resentment and disappointment (tbh i think closer to his deathbed he will stop being mad at him. the dysfunctional love of the brothers is like that). aemond and his love for his brother, incinerating everything in its path, his obsession to take his place, to be him, to be with him, the thirst for his recognition that he did not receive from him as a child? yes! helaena, who is doomed to helplessly watch as the younger brother who screwed up badly and then tries to kill the elder and rushes headlong to death, and her brother-husband is forced to go through hell for the sake of the throne intended for him? she refuse to run for mercy, staying with aegon in the keep? she loves him, she loves them and it hurts her how cruel fate is to their existence.
maybe i'm crazy, but you know what? fuck this show.

Writing out my preferred way the battle at Rook's Rest should have gone because why not.
The beginning mostly stays the same. Criston signals for Aemond and Vhagar, but Sunfyre arrives first. Aemond sees him fly overhead and is pissed, but he doesn't wait to follow him into battle because he's not an idiot and as much as he wants the crown, he's aware of the intensity of the blow losing Aegon would be to their cause.
Still, Vhagar is slow and has to launch herself off the ground, so Aegon gets their first and has an initial fight with Meleys but Vhagar's quick arrival keeps Sunfyre's injuries from being quite so intense. The two of them attack Meleys side by side, but due to her speed and Rhaenys's expertise, she manages to keep evading them with fairly light damage.
Meleys takes off high into the clouds and Aemond and Aegon follow her. No one can see them from below. Aegon urges Sunfyre to engage directly with Meleys and the two dragons become locked together. Instead of intervening this time, Aemond simply watches as Sunfyre is injured and Aegon cries out for his help. Aemond only watches.
We can see the anger in his eyes. It would be so easy to allow Meleys to kill Aegon and Sunfyre. He could say he did his best, but that Aegon refused to battle carefully. He would be honored after he died and Aemond would become king. Aegon doesn't notice the inaction, too focused on saving Sunfyre and himself. In a desperate move, Aegon unclips one of his restraints to grab the dagger at his side and drives it into Meleys's eye as Rhaenys screams in shock and fury.
Meleys wails and lets go of Sunfyre, dropping out of view. Aegon is triumphant and turns to his brother with a smile. Aemond isn't smiling. We watch as he follows Meleys's descent and decides he's safe for now. He returns his attention to Aegon. It would be so easy to do the deed himself and blame Meleys. He contemplates it only for a split second, but Aegon's face goes from smiling to horror. We think he's understood what Aemond plans to do, but in fact, his eyes are fixed on a sight behind him. Meleys has darted up from behind, mouth open and poised to burn Aemond in his saddle.
Aegon doesn't hesitate. He urges Sunfyre forward and as Meleys breathes out a wall of fire, he throws himself and Sunfyre in front of it to protect Aemond from the blast. Before Aemond can react, Meleys sinks her claws into Sunfyre's chest and pulls him out of sight.
Aemond pursues, but it's too late. Meleys has bit into Sunfyre's wing and Aegon can barely stay in the saddle with his one remaining restraint. Meleys rips her head back breaking off part of Sunfyre's wing and the king and his dragon fall through the air, landing in the forest.
Similarly to the show, Aemond is able to defeat Rhaenys and Meleys on his own after Aegon's fall.
Later on, we learn the only reason Aegon was able to survive was the one remaining restraint held him to the saddle but allowed him to slide off to the side enough to evade some of the dragonfire. He's still burned and in pain. He sacrificed himself for his brother and Aemond can't betray him now. Not when he owes his brother a life debt, not when he's seen how deeply Aegon loves him. He becomes Prince Regent and reconciles himself to forever protecting his brother from this point forward.

i have to say, i enjoy the concept of brotherly-betrayal aegond as much as anyone, but i am just so unimpressed with this execution... the main point of contention for me is the absolute lack of tension.
there is no fallout between the greens over luke's murder. the only consequence for aemond is that alicent is just a little pissed at him? she is not shown to even scold him, she's just.... mildly upset? aegon gives even less of a shit, the whole act to him is a non-event. and yet there is the expectation that the viewer should understand that this is such an annoyance to aemond, who feels slighted over this great injustice his own mother is doing to him, poor misunderstood emoboy. man, give me a break.
similarly, and i want to point out that aemond is absolutely not to blame for blood & cheese, but, after jaehaerys' murder, there are no emotional recriminations of aemond's behaviour whatsoever. not even a side-ways comment that "this never would have happened had you not provoked rhaenyra in this way". aemond is not even shown to grieve in any way; he is very removed from this narrative and only briefly ponders it to the brothel madam in a very self-centered way. he acts as if his siblings' favourite dog just died and he's kind of above the theatricality of it all. when aegon then interrupts the scene, it was a perfect opportunity to at least have him allude to the fact that this must have been aemond's hiding place when his son's head was being chopped off, yet he... doesn't?
so, while, yes, there is this thread of aegon having bullied aemond throughout his childhood, it is also tempered by having aegon be sort of considerate as well towards his brother? welcoming him to his council, praising him, not even being exceptionally mean, just mildly boorish in the brothel scene. whereas, on the other side, aemond is so passive in his tepid disgruntlement that it truly sets the stage for the most boring and unfulfilling rivalry on television.
there's no bite to this, no reason to get invested. how will they even be able to break the monotony with only one episode left?

Look, even if Aemond really betrays Aegon and wants to kill him, I won't turn my back on the Aegonds. They are my Roman Empire, I can and will think about them for hours on end. I just hope that if it really happens, it will be sensual. That it will not be dry and crumpled, as if we were spat in the face, but in fact sensual and very chemical. By their looks, by their words. After all, Aegon considers Aemond's loyal to him, like a dog, this cannot be a simple coup with "betrayal", no. It should be an explosion of emotions, a storm that will engulf both Aegon and, I hope, Aemond, who understands how much his brother trusts him, how much he appreciates and loves him. I want Aemond to break down if this will be betrayal. I want him to hesitate and procrastinate, and to keep him a bitch, and at the same time have a mixture of feelings for Aegon. That's what I want if this shit happens. This is the only way for them in the scenario of "betrayal".

i love the aegond divorce with everything in me but the way it was handled is just 😭😭😭 so spoonfed-y to the point where i wanna throw stuff at the screen. i particularly dislike how they handled rook's rest, not the council scene or even the brothel; those were good foundations for the conflict we've seen between them ever since s1.
we have aemond plotting with criston behind aegon's back (very much in-character). and when aegon finds out we have no other scene of them together before aemond leaves, and then alicent rips aegon a new one, and he feels like a fraud and worthless and everything under the sun, and he's drunk and desperate to prove his prowess so he takes sunfyre and goes to RR.
great. love it so far. but aemond outright attacking him is crazyyyyy 😭 i posted abt this, but instead of him standing down w vhagar when he spotted aegon, i feel like it would've been better if he'd rushed to the sky. that way it's like... is he rushing to his brother's aid or does he not want aegon to steal his thunder? having them fight sorta side-by-side instead of aemond suddenly showing up and bbq-ing his brother would make for a way more interesting betrayal, cuz neither aegon or the audience could tell if it was intentional or collateral.
i wanna hear ur thoughts on it cuz i wasn't that disappointed by it. like, i ultimately enjoyed the betrayal, but i feel like it could've been done sm better 😭🙏
ohhh i agree with you!! how they did it was very cringe... all the knights and soldiers literally saw him try to commit kin- and kingslaying.... literally the lannister-bros combo in front of hundreds if not thousands. it's weird because how it happened in the book (similar how you said it actually!) could've been a great way to do it— aemond would still have plausible deniability. because right now.... he LITERALLY douzed his brother fully in flames and meleys got off literally scot-free.... there is no way he did not want him cooked.
just look at criston.... he knows aemond's ass is guiltyyyyy 😭
Tumblr media
also i still think the brothel scene was a goofy way to try to explain his betrayal. i'm DUMBFOUNDED. aegon should've cooked him for being with the brothel maddam when jaehaerys was murdered. he should've screamed at him all drunk, not clown him because he went back to the woman he lost his virginity to. atm aemond just looks moronic and embarrassing 💀

I wasn't interested in Aegon or Aemond in the first season, I was with the blacks, but after 2 episodes of the season 2 I no longer sided with anyone and saw that there were good and evil in both teams, but Tom made me love Aegon, his acting made me love this character and be obsessed with for four weeks straight (still), I became part of Aegond. making gifs and fics with a happy heart.
Yes, I read that there will be betrayal from Aemond, and I know the end of Aemond and Aegon that the book tells, and I know that loving a character like Aegon is a bit tiring, he is a rapist, and that's the one thing I hate about him. Without considering that, I completely sympathize with him, and I see him as a lost child who was forcefully placed in a place that he didn't want. His parents are the reason for all his corruption that people claim.
In my opinion, I think he got what he deserved for his previous actions. He was insulted daily in his circle by his grandfather, mother, and brother, his son was killed, and he has no real friends or a loving wife (and yes, I know he doesn't love her). Everyone has abandoned him. His gone to the battle because of his mother, who throughout his years had been underestimating his value. He wanted to prove that to her and to everyone.
He suffers from deep mental issues. And now? They will make him suffer from health and physical problems, because of whom? Because of the person who he trusts the most and cares about his opinion, because of the person that promised him to protect him, I'm not sad, I am ANGRY, Aemond betrayal is hideous, he not only burned him, but intended to kill him if it were not for Cole's intervention.
Am gonna fuck anyone tells me that it is just a series or a fictional characters, because I know that and because I find nothing to entertain me in this period of my life except some series, and I am a person who relates to fictional characters more than real ones. my sadness and anger are real and deep, I just hope Aegon has some happy moments before his end (Seriously, I'm starting to think that his death would be a mercy for him, But unfortunately it will be an ugly way too)
And yes I think I'm going to start loving Aegon with Jace ...

So I'm now almost convinced that the writers are gonna have Aemond betray Aegon. I hate it so much. They're gonna go full book!Aemond this season, I think. But it's gonna be worse than the book, because book!Aemond did remain loyal to his brother.
Hello, good day/night to you!
As a Team Greener and a supporter of both Aegon and Aemond, I absolutely agree (just as many of my fandom comrades do) that making Aemond betray Aegon at Rook's Rest would be an absolute BS move. Is Aemond ambitious? Yes. Does he desire power? Yes. And still I do not see him either hurting Aegon or letting him be hurt on purpose. Aegon is his brother and his king, the civil war is in full swing, they need to be united. Aemond might think about it, be tempted to do it, but I don't believe he would go through with the betrayal.
Could the writers go there? Of course, they could, especially with their penchant for ruining characters and creating cheap drama where it is least needed. They can try to push "the Greens are divided" agenda; they can try to pull some kind of pseudoshakespearean stunt as in "and then the lust for power consumed him completely".
Will they go there? Only time and the show itself will tell. However, I would like to point out that promo interviews might be quite tricky to interpret and not entirely worthy of putting much stock into them. By saying Aegon should be worried about Aemond the creators might tease the actual events of season 2 - but they also might try to create false (at least partially false) expectations. Besides, HotD writers, directors and producers have been known to say the most confusing and contradictory things even as season 1 episodes were being released. So we just have to wait and see. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, I guess.
At the very least we'll have Tom and Ewan's acting to enjoy. Every time I get sad or worried about things to come for Aegond, I remember Tom's words about him and Ewan having at least one great scene in season 2 (a scene that Tom really loves, apparently), and it makes me feel better.

I agree with the previous anon and your answer, it's so annoying to watch the promos, interviews and so on and being disappointed and even worried because of the things they hint at. It seems that they will completely destroy the family dynamics of the greens and while they are far from a perfect family and have many problematic aspects, the writers will go too far if they simply oppose Alicent to her sons, create unnecessary feud between Aegond during the war and by making Helaena being ignored by everyone. So there is only hate, envy, betrayal and lack of understanding between them, huh. Where is Jace vs Daemon feud, or Rhaenyra vs Baela and Rhaena? Not to mention Rhaenys.
We have to wait and see I guess, but if half of these actual theories concerning the greens turn out to be true, then what do you think that Condal talked about when he said that many people will change sides in s2?? Many of us assumed that he was referring to TB losing some support in the fandom because of B&C, but now it seems that what he actually meant was: the green fandom will become even smaller." And it sucks.
i'm not sure what ryan meant. i did see people get more comfortable with the green kids and seen maybe a bit more pro green voices but whatever i saw is insignificant in comparison to tb, which is the majority.
i think condal has this idea that the way he wrote alicent makes her more sympathetic to the viewers and i've seen some share his sentiment and call book alicent a villain but i think it's just another way of saying ambitious women who do what many favorite male characters do are evil and unrealstic and far more easier to hate.
i think he also probably thinks b&c will turn people off but let me be doubtful. first... daemon stans still love daemon despite everything he already did and b&c is a daemon thing, rhaenyra won't be involved in planning it so it's not even gonna be seen as a tb thing. furthermore if they'll make b&c a failed kidnapping even that's gonna soften daemon more than the book version.
so the majority of the people are obviously tb and i think this will strengthen despite the clip coming out of daemon scaring rhaenyra because at the end of the day tb fans are for rhaenyra so daemon can easily be set aside in their minds, if that make sense.
i don't think anyone will switch sides in season 2. i think the time for switching was last season while we were supposed to see what led to alicent making her choices (and we saw most of it up to episode 7). but since they took her motivation and turned into 'she heard a dying man babble something about aegon and so she crowned aegon' to such a degree that even beesbury was like 'stop playing around' then of course... who can switch sides based on that if everything that is happening is taken as 'alicent misheard viserys' and she has no actual real motivation anymore for either his crowning or standing by his side. everyone will just be like 'awww all of this is happening because she was foolish when she heard viserys' so there is no reason for anyone to switch because the story is fully telling you what is 'right' and what is 'wrong'.
show!alicent is a character whose entire arc was constructed on who show!rhaenyra needed her to be. there's nothing more to be said about it.

What can I say about this betrayal? I had a lot of thoughts, really, and Criston showed a lot of emotions, as if I saw a book!Cole, I really liked it, thanks to Fabien for his work. But Aemond?? Oh, we all know how much they are trying to make the greens look bad guys now, and I already wrote that if there is betrayal, I will still be with the Aegonds. And I'm still, yeah, hi. Because Aemond did not go to "finish off Aegon", as some were afraid (and write). Even before Criston, he had tried to sheathe his sword. No attempts to kill his brother. A sincere check on what happened there. To some extent, I can even agree with Ewan's words about "was it an accident or was it on purpose". What do we know? That he didn't fly to help right away. Yes, it is a fact. Why? It's a controversial issue, I don't want to describe it here, if anyone is interested, I'll tell you my thoughts separately. Was he aiming only at Aegon? No, Meleyse's head was there too. To be honest, I see in this something dark!Aemond, who knows what can happen to Aegon after dracarys, but that will also allow him to be chained to the Red Keep so that he doesn't do it (flying towards danger) anymore, right? Right. Here's the answer about my attitude to this. That's it, thank you all, I'll go on writing jokes.

i think larys is trying to isolate aegon from his mother and brother in order to become his closest ally. imo there are no 'rumors', he's just manipulating aegon
annoying ass mf why in the fuck is he trying to sow discord in the fam they literally only have 2 dragons driven by 2 teenagers right now oh my god 😭😭 seems like it's condal's annoying ass forcing this fake aegond tension to set up the useless and moronic betrayal at RR 🥴

"And in Aegon’s case, he might have to concern himself with a dragon close to home: his own younger brother, Aemond." "You need some betrayal. You need some vileness." "I’m neither team Team Green nor Team Black; I’m team Aemond.""It’s complicated for Helaena because she’s got this kind of Cassandra-like aspect to her. The curse is that no one will ever believe her." (yeah, it's not like the Targaryen family is known to have dragon dreamers, right....)
I'm sorry but do they really think all this excites fans for the season? What was the point of even asking to choose a side during the promo? And Ewan literally has been promoting Team Aemond from the start because Aemond will be a loner who dgaf about anyone... I get that this show is just not for me probably, it's for Rhaenyra, Daemon, Team Black and Rhaenicent's fans. But I'm pretty much done with this show, I have zero interest in watching this team black propaganda-rhaenicent fanfiction shit.
i honestly hope what they're cooking for aegond isn't as nasty as they make it seem. i do think it's in line with show aemond's character that he still feels some resenment and envy that aegon gets what he always wanted / what he feels he worked for, but i truly hope that whatever they have in plan for this feud is at least born out of momentary rage, recklessness and impuslivity and not premeditated. idk if that makes sense.
however, that part of the quote about helaena bothers me because i was / i am really hoping that whatever aemond knows about his fate is from helaena so the idea that she goes on to tell prophecies and no one believes her annoys me very much. maybe it's just a facade quote and we'll see it's not entirely like that. i'll wait to see more on that.
honestly i do get your frustration. i feel like the conflict they created with the greens is definitely a bit... too much. while the other side barely has any conflict to speak of, even when there's opportunity for it, from a first look at the information we get about s2 greens, it seems like everyone's resenting each other, plotting shady stuff, making bad decisions. and don't get me wrong, the greens aren't the picture perfect family some green stans think they are and that's okay, but if you look at the plot in detail, i do feel like the writers introduced and will introduce too much conflict.
but unfortunately you are right, it is a show mainly for TB and rha*nicent (which is also about TB in its own way), and i again, i get your frustration
i also feel like the ship has been sinking for a long time, but i guess my only lifeboat is helaemond, which i've been interested from the beginning. even though i would have liked to see a different story for the greens, and even though it will suck having to see stuff i don't like about their portrayal, i've been thinking lately that i'll just focus on helaemond and see whatever happens with the rest of the story.
i think the only thing that's left to anyone who is frustrated with this is to read and write fic and discuss the book and come up with headcanons. we can't change the story they want to tell :/
