The Wizard Nebula

NGC 7380 has the colloquial name “The Wizard Nebula” because many see the jagged profile of a wizard in the sharp ridges of gas and dust. The catalog number actually refers to an open cluster of stars near the centre which is energizing the gas and dust nearby.

The Wizard Nebula is situated in our neighbourhood of the Milky Way galaxy, at a distance of only 8,500 light years from earth. It is about 40 light years in size.

The predominant red colour suggests the presence of hot hydrogen, typically associated with a stellar nursery.

I photographed the Wizard Nebula from my garden in Strasbourg France on two nights in July 2024. This is an ensemble of 80 photos, where each was a 3 minute exposure (4 hours of photography).

NGC7380/SH2-142 aka "The Wizard Nebula". An active Star forming region with an open Starcluster. Its around 7200 light-years away from us in the constellation Cepheus and has a total radius of around 100 light-years.

Reworked Version, new picture post processing workflow! Hope you enjoy 😁👍🔭

That object is hard to get and it took us 6.5 Hrs total integration time. (300sec single frames plus darks, flats and bias frames).

We made that picture with an 8"F5 Newton telescope and an astromodified DSLR camera.

Nebulosa del mago - NGC 7380

Esta imagen es una suma de 70 tomas realizadas a 90 segundos de exposición y 3200 ISO.

Las fotografías fueron realizadas el sábado 3 de diciembre del 2016 entre las 18:00 y las 20:00 TU en Rasal (Huesca-España).

El equipo utilizado es un telescopio reflector Newton 200/1000 con una cámara Canon EOS 600D modificada, un corrector de coma en una montura ecuatorial EQ5 motorizada con GOTO.
