AJ’s Analysis- Week Two Preview⚡️: Chargers at Panthers
Disclaimer: I am a Chargers fan so this will obviously be biased BUT I have been a football fan for the last 12 years and absolutely love dissecting the game and making comments so I figured I would give this a try! Please feel free to make comments and let me know your thoughts in my inbox!
Players to watch:
Carolina
#9 Bryce Young QB- Alabama- Year 2
Struggled throughout his rookie year last year after winning the Heisman his sophomore year of college. Finished his college career with 8356 passing yards, 80 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and 7 rushing touchdowns, making him the number one pick in last year’s draft. Threw 13/30 for 161 yards and 2 interceptions last week. Looking for redemption in week 2.
#6 Miles Sanders RB- Penn State- Year 6
In his second season with the Panthers after spending the first four with the Eagles, Sanders is looking for his identity in Carolina. His best season was 2022 with the Eagles where they went to the Super Bowl and he had his first 1000 yard rushing season, rushing for 1,269 yards and 11 TDs. Last season Sanders only had 432 rushing yards and 1 touchdown over 16 games. Maybe this will be his redemption season? Hopefully for him it’ll be better than last week’s performance of 5 carries for 22 yards.
#19 Adam Thielen WR- Minnesota State- Year 11
Also in his second season as a Panther, after nine years with the Vikings. Coming off of his third 1000 yard receiving season and has been selected to two pro bowls. Last week he had four targets, for 49 yards so tomorrow could easily be a big day for him.
#17 Xavier Legette WR- South Carolina- Year 1
He’s viral on Twitter (I’m not calling it X ever in my life) for his country accent but the rookie receiver is extremely talented. In 2023 with South Carolina he had 1,255 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. If he and his qb really start to click he could easily take off. His debut numbers last week, 7 targets for 35 yards.
#54 Shaq Thompson LB- Washington- Year 10
Credited for ten tackles last week and nobody else on defense really seemed to have done much because the Saints scored 47 points.
Los Angeles
#10 Justin Herbert QB- Oregon- Year 5🩵
17/26 for 144 passing yards and 1 TD last week which is great that he didn’t have to carry the team and still get a win. Looking for the passing game to open up a bit, more third down conversions and just better overall communication between him and his receivers.
#11 Cameron Dicker Kicker- Texas- Year 3
Perfect Prince. You guys know.
#76 Joe Alt RT- Notre Dame- Year 1
Monster debut. Proved to the people that he was worth the fifth overall pick. Looking for another great game from the rookie!
#3 Derwin James Jr. S- Florida State- Year 7
This man is very special to me. Didn’t include him in the preview last week because I thought it was getting too long but here it is!! He was the highest paid safety in the league last year and for good reason. 2 time first team all pro, 3 time pro bowler had 125 total tackles last season, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 interception. Like I said, he’s the moment.
#95 Poona Ford DT- Texas- Year 7
Special shoutout to the 5’11, 310 pound defensive tackle that had an interception last week in his Chargers debut. The entire defense was so impressive compared to years past which isn’t saying much because they really couldn’t stop anyone last year especially BUT new year, new defensive coordinator and new attitude.
#27 JK Dobbins RB- Ohio State- Year 5
10 carries for 135 yards and 1 TD last week. The Panthers should be looking to shut him down…Will they?
WR Room
#9 DJ Chark, out. #5 Josh Palmer, hurt. #1 Quentin Johnston, scares me most of the time but last week he didn’t hurt me too badly so I’m gonna be nice. #15 Ladd McCkonkey, sweetie pie with a timely touchdown in his NFL debut. #82 Brenden Rice could very well be making his debut tomorrow with these injuries. Looking for this collective unit to contribute a lot more throughout the season so tomorrow is a big test.
Other notes:
- If the chargers win they’ll be 2-0 for the first time since 2012. Justin was a freshman in high school playing JV then.
- The Carolina Panthers record since 2019 is 24-60, worst in the NFL but they should not be taken lightly. Anyone can lose on any given day.
Happy week 2 and BOLT UP!!!

What the actual F$*% was Week 2?
With teams reaching Dick Cheney levels of conservative when it comes to playing their starters in the preseason, it only makes sense to take the first month of the season with a grain of salt as teams learn to gel together and assimilate to regular season speed. That being said, Week 2 gave us the most laughably batshit crazy outcomes imaginable and turned the league completely upside down. Our staff vigorously questioned what was in that newest strain we paired with the Sunday action as the results unfolded.
Yet through sober eyes now that the smoke has cleared, we can confirm each of the following stories is true. Two weeks in, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield are the front runners for MVP, the Saints are a threshing machine, and Justin Fields is 2-0. Warning the following content may disturb some readers.
Rams vs Cardinals
Coming into Sunday’s matchup, Sean McVay owned the Cardinals with an all-time record of 13-2 against Arizona. And between a bitterly disappointing rookie debut from Marvin Harrison Jr., a nonexistent Cardinals’ pass rush in Week 1, and the Rams taking the Lions to overtime in Detroit the week before, there was plenty of reason to believe that trend would continue. Then MHJ reminded us all why he was the top receiver taken in this draft, exploding for 130 yards and two touchdowns on only four receptions.
But it wasn’t just the Offense, with its 489 total yards of production, that put on an absolute clinic against LA. The Cardinals’ defense held the Rams to less than 300 total yards, while their anemic Pass Rush that recently failed to make Josh Allen so much as look over his shoulder, managed to sack Stafford five times. To make matters worse, one of the trendiest picks to take the NFC this year is now without Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, and basically their entire Offensive Line after two weeks. They now find themselves sitting at 0-2 for the first time in Sean McVay’s career as a Head Coach, right before facing the next team that was on the wrong side of a baffling outcome.
49ers vs Vikings
The student may very quickly have become the master as Sam Darnold (yes that Sam Darnold) outdueled the Quarterback he sat behind last year with his new team. While it’s impossible to discount the impact that Christian McCaffrey makes for this team, the Niners are still largely the same squad that came comically close to winning it all last year, while Darnold is on his fourth team since 2018 for a reason. But for whatever reason, the Kevin O’Connell/Brian Flores combo just gives Shanahan and Co fits they can’t seem to handle.
Those fits included a blocked punt, an interception, a fumble, multiple turnovers on downs, and a 97 yard touchdown from Darnold to Justin Jefferson, the highest paid receiver in the league for a reason. Dominating the Giants in Week 1 was cute, but getting the best of the reigning NFC Champions is a statement. Maybe the fourth time is the charm?
Lions vs Bucs
Credit where credit is due, the Bucs played the Lions tough in the divisional round last year, losing a spirited one-score affair. But Baker Mayfield has always been great when he’s been doubted only to crash and burn the minute people believe in him. Yet as we alluded to earlier, Baker Mayfield is on a tear so far this season, tied for first in the league in touchdowns amongst quarterbacks despite getting paid (whom he shares that distinction with, is every bit as insane).
On the other side of this rematch, 4th Down aggression bit Dan Campbell in the kneecaps once again late in the 4th Quarter, while confusion between the Offense and Special teams earlier in the game cost them a field goal. Goff didn’t help much either throwing two interceptions and going 1 of 7 in the red zone which fucked oh so many fantasy teams out there. Tampa Bay looks primed to defend its division title, but to do that they’ll have to go through the QB who shares Baker’s league lead in touchdowns and just dominated in
Cowboys vs Saints
Dallas coming off an unbelievable high and feeling invincible only to immediately lose to an opponent they absolutely shouldn’t will never stop being funny. Inarguably the most vocal fanbase in the league, they find a way to be brought back to reality the minute they start getting high off their own supply. While it’s not inconceivable for Dallas to lose to a lesser team, the manner in which the Saints went marching in to AT&T Stadium was particularly surprising.
Carr had a 125.0 passer rating, Kamara punched in 3 scores including a 57 yarder off a screen pass, and Dak was pulled in the Fourth Quarter ending the Cowboys’ 16 game home winning streak in emphatic fashion. New Orleans blowing out Carolina was one thing, but annihilating the Cowboys on their turf for the first time in the regular season since Tom Brady himself did it in Week 1 of the 2022 was truly a mindfuck we didn’t see coming. With a point differential of +62 two weeks in, it’s time to stop underestimating the Saints.
Raiders vs Ravens
How in God’s name did Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry get outdueled at home by Gardner fucking Minshew with a 10 point lead in the 4th Quarter??? We love Gardner Minshew, he’s a fucking maniac who doesn’t know what he doesn’t know and has never had a single fuck to give. But him outdueling a two-time MVP is like Uncle Rico outdueling……Lamar Jackson! That said don’t look now, but Minshew is currently 2nd in the NFL in passing yards.
The fact of the matter is Baltimore might feature the scariest rushing combo in the league and still couldn’t ice this game behind the roars of their fans. In a fortnight, the Ravens have gone from strong Super Bowl bets to being in danger of missing the playoffs (less than 11% of teams that start 0-2 have reached the postseason in the past decade). To make matters worse their next 3 games are against the Cowboys, Bills, and division rival Bengals. What the actual flock.

Eric Kendricks, Micah Parsons detail Cowboys' defensive collapse vs. Saints
One week ago, it was the Dallas Cowboys and their defense holding court against a very talented Cleveland Browns' offense that featured a lot of firepower at the skill positions. That was then, however, and this is now; and the "now" features the defense in Dallas being thumped by Derek Carr and the New Orleans Saints in the home opener at AT&T Stadium.
Though it's two entirely different contests and seasons, it's impossible to ignore the parallels between what happened on Sept. 15 and what took place on this very field in January. Carr teamed with Alvin Kamara and Co. to score touchdowns on their first six possessions of the game.

BUF-MIA (✅): Please retire, Tua. Like what McDaniel said, there's no shame in saving yourself and being the QB of your family.
LV-BAL (❌): Ratbirds, I hope you love having Gardner Minshew of all people as your daddy!
LAC-CAR (✅): Tagged: "Poor Bryce Young i am so so sorry"
NO-DAL (❌): Nice to see New Orleans finally not wait until the final month to be good!
TB-DET (❌): As both a Lions fan and a Browns hater, this one was a bit of a mixed bag.
IND-GB (❌): Guess the Packers don't need the power of Love as much as we thought!
CLE-JAC (❌): Second year in a row that a receiver drops a walk-off Hail Mary in the endzone against the Browns. Goddamnit.
SF-MIN (❌): Didn't expect Darnold's potential Comeback Player of the Year arc to wait until 2024, but okay!
SEA-NE (✅): Sorry Foxborough, but unlike 10 years ago, not even Butler is here to save you from Seattle.
NYJ-TEN (✅): Funny seeing so many young QBs with at least a little talent in this division... and also Will Levis.
NYG-WAS (✅): A literal kick in the G-Nads for the G-Men
MAR-ARI (❌): Now here's the Kyler-to-Marvin Jr. connection we were expecting! Probably not in such dominant fashion though.
PIT-DEN (✅): Bo Nix is off to such a putrid start that Bo Peep throwing with her broken arm would probably be an upgrade. (And now I almost wish the Broncos had the international Disney+ Toy Story game just so that joke would be even more fitting.)
CIN-KC (✅): Not gonna lie, after Week 1's disaster, this one made me a lot more confident that we could still have a good season! With that said... AAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHHH WHHYYYYYY?????
CHI-HOU (✅): Uh, Caleb? Chicago ain't ruining you too, right?
ATL-PHI (❌): If you told me one of these two teams would have an instant classic of a choke at the end, I certainly wouldn't have rushed to pick whoever wasn't the Falcons. (Side note, as ugly as that Saquon drop was, I don't want to rag on him too much because the play call itself was so awful, courtesy of someone who's quickly looking like one of the worst coaches to have ever made a Super Bowl.)
