I feel like saying that the US players made the booing bigger than it needed to be is a bit unfair. They were on a stage being presented to so many new people representing their country, in an event that hasn’t happened in 9 years. I know if I was in their shoes, I would feel offended if people booed my country even after being explicitly told not to. And I know it’s more of “we hate what your country is doing to our country,” than “we hate your country as a whole,” but it’s still letting political narratives take over a sport that should be used to unite people - especially right now. Along with this, Trump’s call and post was just used to further his own personal, immature, petty agenda against Canada. He does this often with sports, such as the NFL and NASCAR (although his last nascar thing backfired which was sooo satisfying). Do I agree with the team going along with everything? No. But I also know that they are still people, and can still be good people despite personal beliefs. Anyways, srry for rambling in your asks :/ I’m open to discussing this more with you in messages if you’re interested! Thank you and have a nice day!
I don't mind people ranting in my ask at all! I'm open to talking.
I think politics are always going to bleed into sports no matter what we do. A lot of people took the booing as Canada hating on the players and disliking the players, when the intention was to show their discontent with the current president.
I just think that the fights fueled the political narrative even further. Of course people are going to take the "they fought because of politics" excuse and run with it.
There are always two sides of the coin. Like you said, if people were booing my anthem, I'd be pissed. But what if another country's president was talking about my country the way Trump is talking about Canada? I'd be pissed too.
Both feelings are valid, it's just the way that you deal with them as an adult . I feel like they (as a whole organization, not only the team) could've dealt with it better.

Wait make that 3 players that were some of Johnnys best friends. Werenski too completely forgot.
When the tournament began, and their father was at the practice rink, it was so beautiful and emotional to see. Then, everything went downhill, unfortunately.

Honestly the whole tournament was a mess. I think the fans made it more political than the players after they were trying to spin that the 3 fights were because of the booing when it was to hype their team up. The USA guys always said it was for the Gaudreau brothers especially considering 2 of them on the team (M Tkachuk and Hanifin) were some of his best friends. The team was incredibly beat up though and had 2 key players out with M Tkachuks groin injury and Mcavoys shoulder. The Olympics next year should be interesting since they won’t be able to fight.
The fighting might have been to hype the team up, but we can't ignore the fact that it made the political narrative even worse. They should've known better, honestly. The comments were flooding in after the fight.
Canada vs US is a big rivalry, especially when it comes to hockey. They were in Canada, and after Trump's comments about annexing Canada, the booing was to be expected, honestly. They made it something bigger than it needed to be.
Trump's call and official accounts posting about it, was the icing on the cake. They could've kept it on the down low, but guess they couldn't. That was on them.
Yeah, it felt like everyday there was a different injury. I don't know how beneficial it is to players' health having this tournament in the middle of the season. They're already "tired" because they're playing for their teams, and then going to a tournament that can be physical took a toll on them.

Jack’s underlying stats for the tournament were also good especially for being one of the younger players there. If anybody wants to criticize team USA I would point to Sullivan’s coaching, Matthews’ complete lack of leadership as captain, or any of the four other players on ice for the gwg who werent doing their jobs. Like it wasn’t a superstar performance from Jack by any means but the hate boner people have for him is transparent
Yeah, the lack of leadership from Mathews is so real! From the videos and interviews, it sounded like they were coming for blood, but guess not.

I'm seeing a lot of people criticizing Jack's play. And while I understand the frustration, I'd also like to know what the team did as whole that was so remarkable during this tournament.
Picking three fights and losing all of them?
Making the tournament political when it should've been about honouring the Gaudreau brothers?
Living off of body checks and hits on the Canadian players during the final, instead of scouring goals?
Everyone was talking about how the US team was so much better than Canada, and yet, they lost.
We also should remind ourselves that these players don't play together, and didn't have enough time to work together as a unit, and be able to connect passes with more accuracy.
Yeah, Jack hasn't been playing to the best of his abilities, and NJ fans are able to notice that. But they're a TEAM, they don't work individually. Keep the energy the same for everyone else.
