My NFL top 100 players of 2024:
It’s that time of the year again. Players across the NFL have voted for their peers and created a list of the top 100 among those – and so did I. As always, I have to mention the fundamental issue with how the official list is put together, considering each participant only lists their first 20 names, which encourages some biases for teammates. Players at the end of the ranking would otherwise…

NFL TOP 100
Who was the biggest over reach? Snub?
We were surprised Purdy landed at 28 in his first full season (maybe top 15 next year?), and Mahomes landing at 4? Could this mean the NFL is finally going to flip the script (as they say?)
Send us your thoughts, or rants.

Dolphins and Star Tyreek Hill Agree to Massive New Adjusted Deal
A day after NFL players officially rated Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyree Hill as the No. 1 rated player in the entire league, the Dolphins have agreed to a new adjusted deal with the highly-touted speedster. More news: Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill Makes History as Only NFL WR With 99 Madden Rating The #Dolphins and star WR Tyreek Hill, the No. 1 player in the NFL Top 100 list, has agreed to a new contract to properly compensate him. He gets $90M over the next 3 years with $65M guaranteed, per me and @CameronWolfe. That brings the 4 year total of fully guaranteed money to $106.5M. Deal negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus and Jason Rosenhaus.” The Dolphins and Hill have been in constant contact about an adjusted deal that would make him closer to one of the highest-paid receivers in the league, and both parties have now come to an agreement on that adjusted deal. Through the next three year years, Hill will receiver $90 million, with $65 of that being guaranteed. After securing 1,700+ yards in back-to-back seasons, the Dolphins have awarded Hill with a new deal to keep him in-house for the next three seasons. The Dolphins and Tyreek Hill agree on a new adjusted contract. More Kara Durrette/Getty Images Hill has been one of the most dynamic players in the NFL the past two seasons and in his entire career. However, after a blockbuster deal sent Hill to the Dolphins from the Kansas City Chiefs, he appeared to up his receiving game even more. Ever since Hill arrived in Miami, he exclaimed that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was the “most accurate” quarterback he had ever played with. That was clearly the case as his first season in 2022 saw him secure 1,710 yards and seven touchdowns en route to being nominated for Offensive Player of the Year, league MVP, and landing an All-Pro and Pro Bowl honor. The 2023 season saw Hill emerge even more as an unstoppable threat. He lead the league in receiving yards with 1,799 and 13 touchdowns. He once again was nominated for Offensive Player of the Year and league MVP, while receiving another All-Pro and Pro Bowl honor. Hill has been a shining force on the Dolphins and has been one of the biggest advocates for Tagovailoa receiving a new contract. That occurred on July 26 when the Dolphins and Tagovailoa agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million extension. Hill spoke on the contract recently, calling it “the best day ever.” Though he has been the biggest cheerleader for Tagovailoa, that can now be reversed, as the Dolphins have now locked in Hill for the next three years. The Dolphins also extended Jaylen Waddle in May with a three-year, $84.75 contract extension. The offensive attack for the Dolphins has been top-tier, and the organization has now locked in three of its best players for the next few seasons. Source link via The Novum Times

‘Disruptive’ Jared Verse is Rams' first pick
Tumblr media
HERMOSA BEACH - The Los Angeles Rams got it right last year. After doing some home purging of their roster, the Rams went the way of the NFL Draft to shore up their personnel. The Rams went with the youth movement.  The strategy paid off for head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead.  The Rams had 14 draft picks in 20223. All 14 of those draft picks wound up making the team. Several players, including defensive tackle Kobie Turner, offensive lineman Steve Avila, and wide receiver Puka Nacua produced stellar rookie debuts.

(Photo by Joe Robbins/Icon Sportswire) The challenge for the Rams has been magnified with the retirement of star defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Even at the quarterback position with starter Matthew Stafford and backup Jimmy Garoppolo, another signal-caller would add more youth to that quarterback room.  The Rams came into the 2024 draft coming off a year in which they made a surprising playoff run, losing out to NFC Conference runner-up Detroit Lions. And so with the 19th overall pick in the draft this year, the Rams made Florida State edge rusher Jared Verse their selection.  “It’s a dream come true,” Verse said duing a Zoom press call with reporters. “You work your whole life for this moment. I talked to the Rams throughout the process. Last week I got to meet with them again and do one last interview with them and it felt like the right thing. As you go on, as you go through the whole process and hear them call my name with that Los Angeles Rams attached to it. Woo! Dream come true.” The hole on the defensive line created by the retirement of Donald simply called for the Rams to fill that void immediately. In his two seasons playing for the Seminoles, Verse recorded 18 sacks and 29.5 tackles for losses.  At 6-foot-4 and 254 pounds, Verse has the size to play at the NFL level.  His ability to create havoc in the offensive backfield could be attributed to the motor he has thanks to his track background. At the NFL Combine, Verse posted a 40-yard time of 4.58 seconds.  “It helps your footwork a lot because you can't make false steps,” Verse said. “If you make false steps in track, they don't care how fast you are, but in high school you might be able to get away. When you face top level competition your form has to be perfect, especially on the later runs like the 100 to 200 to 400, your strides become very important.”  “That's why when a quarterback or a running back gets of out the pocket, I have faith in my speed and my form to be able to catch up to him and do something like that. Even if they may be faster, their form is not better than mine,” he added.  Verse is the first player to be selected by the Rams in the first round since 2016. That was the year the Rams made Jared Goff, now the starting quarterback of the Detroit Lions, the face of their franchise.  The Rams have moved on from the Goff experiment and have won a Super Bowl since then with Matthew Stafford manning the quarterback position.  "The way he plays the game, from the first snap to the last snap of the game, he wears people down." ?? Coach McVay on @JaredVerse1 pic.twitter.com/Dpmsi4TFxm— Los Angeles Rams (@RamsNFL) April 26, 2024 The Rams want to make another Super Bowl run with Stafford. That means surrounding the veteran quarterback with all the right pieces to enable that to take place. Filling in the gap left behind by Donald was of the highest priority for the Rams. According to the overview of his draft profile, Verse is described as being “twitchy and compact, with explosiveness featured at the point of attack.” Translation: Verse is a disruptor, which McVay likes.   “He's got great hands. He's violent,” McVay said. “He's got a versatile arsenal of moves that he can activate, but he plays the game the way that we want it to be played. We're looking for grown men on defense and I think you've seen a lot of the guys that we've added through free agency and then with the first pick tonight, he was one of the guys that we had targeted and feel really good coming away with him. He's going to make a big impact.” One of the things that has Snead impressed with Verse is his passion for the game.  “The cool thing about him is where he started (at) Albany, transferred to Florida State," Snead said. "Might have gone about where he went tonight last year, but he decided to stay back. I can tell you about him. He's just one of those guys that you want to just watch another game on because you can tell he cares about football. He has fun playing football and oh, by the way, he's pretty disruptive, violent. You think defense, the way he plays is next to the word in the dictionary.” Top Image Caption: CHESTNUT HILL, MA - SEPTEMBER 16: Florida State Seminoles defensive lineman Jared Verse (5) in action during the college football game between Florida State Seminoles and Boston College Eagles on September 16, 2023, at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, MA. Theres No Universe Where Tyreek Hill Is the NFLs Best Player
Dec 31, 2023; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (10) on the sidelines during the first half against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. credits: Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports On Friday night, Tyreek Hill was announced as the No. 1 player in the NFL. Every preseason, the NFL releases their Top 100 rankings, where NFL players vote on their peers to create a top list of overall players heading into the season. Allow me to preface by stating that Tyreek Hill might just be the best wide receiver I’ve ever seen. Like many people, when he was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Miami Dolphins, I was very curious to see if he could have success without Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes facilitating things offensively. He proved any doubters wrong. He’s caught 119 passes in each of his two seasons with the Dolphins. Last season, he was one yard shy of 1,800 receiving yards. He scored 13 touchdowns. At 30 years old, he’s showing no signs of slowing down, and is eyeing another big payday to stay in Miami. It’s also the offseason. I understand that these lists are populated to give fans and pundits alike an opportunity to debate and keep the NFL front and center of our minds. But let’s be real with ourselves. Hill is not the NFL’s best player. It’s Mahomes. Outrageously enough, Mahomes was the No. 4 ranked player on this list. Lamar Jackson and Christian McCaffrey were also ranked higher. While these players who voted can’t just rattle off all of the best QBs in the NFL as the top players, let’s not forget that this is the most important position in professional sports. “It’s a quarterback league.” That’s what we always hear. Well, in a quarterback league, the No. 1 player should be the passer who just won back-to-back Super Bowls. Oh yeah, and that was after Hill’s departure from Kansas City.  Ever since Hill’s departure two years ago, the Chiefs have not had a true No. 1 wide receiver. Having Travis Kelce at tight end certainly helps things, but it’s absolutely absurd that Mahomes lost the greatest receiver of this generation and still found a way to win two rings. He threw a career-high 14 interceptions last season, so maybe his peers are holding that against him. It’s hard to find any other reasoning. Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was behind Mahomes in the No. 5 slot. He is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and was the highest-graded defender. It’s truly no slight against Hill, but in an NFL dominated by quarterbacks, he’s simply not the best player. The proof is in the results that he’s not the most impactful, as his former team has won two championships and he hasn’t even won a playoff game. Hill will undoubtedly have a stellar 2024 season that inches him closer to football immortality in Canton, Ohio. Mahomes is just 28 years old, shooting for his third straight Super Bowl. There are levels to this. Source link via The Novum Times

What ever happened to Justin Blackmon?
Tumblr media
by; BenJarmin Munguia
What ever happen to Justin Blackmon
The Oklahoma native was a start in college, becoming the 2012 Festa Bowl MVP and the BIG 12 offensive player of the year. Many people said he would be the next Terrell Ownes.
But what happened that he was only in the league for no more than 3 seasons?
Blackmon attended Oklahoma State University (OSU) in 2009. While his freshman year looked like any other subpar wide receiver in college, with only 20 receptions, his 2011 season was historic. He caught 111 catches for 1,782 yards for 20 touchdowns. He was named an All-American and won the BIG 12 Offensive Player of the Year award.
Entering his Junior year, the Ardmore native raked up 122 receptions and over 1,500 yards receiving, setting records for most consecutive 100- and 200-yard games. His best game came during the 2012 Fiesta Bowl. Blackmon hauled in 8 receptions for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns, even having one carry for 52 yards. OSU won, defeating Stanford 38-41. Blackmon was named MVP.
He finished his college career with over 3500 yards and 40 touchdowns. Becoming the only one of two college players to win the Fred Biletnikoff Award twice
After a promising college career, Justin looked like a top-ten draft pick and what could be the second coming of Terrell Owens. The Jaguars drafted Blackmon fifth overall in the 2012 NFL draft, and fans were excited. The former Fiesta Bowl MVP looked to be the cornerstone of the offense.
Then things started to derail.
A month after the draft, Blackmon was arrested for his second DUI. He had a prior arrest in 2010, and it didn't seem like a red flag at the time. But it is something to keep an eye out for.
In his rookie year with the Jaguars. The former OSU standout raked up over 800 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns. His best game was a week 11 matchup against the Houston Texans. Blackmon raked up 7 receptions and 236 yards, the 3rd most receiving yards by a rookie in a single game in NFL history.
However, in his second year in the NFL, Blackmon would be suspended for the first 4 games due to violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. But he was making up for the suspension when his first two games back, he collected over 135 yards receiving in both games, but in week 9. Blackmon was suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse and missed the remainder of the season. He finished the season with 415 yards. They averaged about 103 yards per game he played.
Things were going from bad to worse for Blackmon, as he was arrested for another DUI in 2015. Football was not a priority.
Blackmon retired in 2017, but the Jaguars still have him on the Reserve/Suspended list.
Blackmon's NFL career was filled with was filed with alcohol and suspensions; even after his suitable rookie year, he could never escape his off-field issues.
There is light to his football story. In January 2024, Blackmon will be inducted into the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame, a reward that he well deserved for the dominance and power he had back in Stillwater County.
After Blackmon's time in the NFL, he became one of the biggest "What ifs" in NFL history. What could the two-time Fred Biletnikoff
Award winner have done on the professional field without his offseason antics?
