This story is not a joke. The NYTimes ran an article that suggested the Biden campaign was trying to recruit Taylor Swift to support Biden’s reelection effort. See NYTimes, Inside Biden’s Anti-Trump Battle Plan (and Where Taylor Swift Fits In. (Accessible to all.)

The report by the Times caused right-wing bloggers and media to lose their minds. Although the right wing was perfectly happy to have Kanye West pal around with Trump, they are convinced that the possibility of an endorsement by Taylor Swift is proof of a deep-state conspiracy involving vaccines, rigging of the Super Bowl, and a fake romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce (a player for the Kansas City Chiefs).

Huppke notes the following statements by prominent Trump supporters:

Laura Loomer, a MAGA loyalist whom Donald Trump just last year called “terrific,” posted on what used to be Twitter: “The Democrats’ Taylor Swift election interference psyop is happening in the open . . .  It’s not a coincidence that current and former Biden admin officials are propping up Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. They are going to use Taylor Swift as the poster child for their pro-abortion GOTV Campaign.” Trump supporter Mike Crispi wrote, “The NFL is totally RIGGED for the Kansas City Chiefs, Taylor Swift, Mr. Pfizer (Travis Kelce). All to spread DEMOCRAT PROPAGANDA. Calling it now: KC wins, goes to Super Bowl, Swift comes out at the halftime show and ‘endorses' Joe Biden with Kelce at midfield. It's all been an op since day one.”

The fever rose to such a pitch that Fox News host Jeannine Pirro issued a warning to Taylor Swift, saying that Swift “should not get involved in politics.” Pirro also said,

Why would someone as popular as she is alienate, and I’m not saying, you know … what’s going to be, ‘Yeah, people are going to hate her,’ but why alienate your fans and Swifties?”

I have included the above detail to make the point that the right-wing freak-out over the Taylor Swift conspiracy theory is real. It is a sign of the right wing’s detachment from reality (thanks to Trump) and the rising sense of panic about Joe Biden’s chances of beating Trump.

Because MAGA extremists cannot accept the fact that Trump is the worst presidential candidate in US history and will likely lose, they are beginning to fantasize about scenarios that will rationalize his defeat. The fact that they believe Taylor Swift is part of a deep-state conspiracy signals their anxiety and insecurity.

No one should dismiss the enormous influence that Taylor Swift has over her fans. An endorsement would likely motivate hundreds of thousands of young voters to show up in November. And what Republicans fear most is voters who show up at the polls. Republicans win when people don’t vote. That’s the fear at the center of their freak out over Taylor Swift—that young people might be motivated to vote.

Vontae Ottis Davis (May 27, 1988 – April 1, 2024) was a football player who was a cornerback for the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Buffalo Bills. He played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini and was selected by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. He made two Pro Bowls in his career. He retired from the NFL in the middle of the Bills’ second game of the 2018 season, removing himself from the game at halftime.

I was shown entry portals, where 👺 evil spirits were 🆓 to enter and exit 🌎 Earth.

In 1841, Scottish journalist Charles Mackay published a book with the impressive title Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. In it he described how, at various times, masses of gullible people believed the most inane foolishness. Like witches consorted with the Devil, alchemists changed lead into gold, or Dutch tulips were inherently valuable. Wrote Mackay in his introduction to the 1852 edition:

We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds on one object, and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first.

He could well have been referring to the subset of our population that today is willing to accept as true patently ridiculous absurdities. This nation within our nation consists entirely of the denizens of MAGA land. And, in fact, they may be even more delusional than the people Mackay wrote about.

After swallowing the QAnon nonsense in 2017 about a worldwide Democrat cabal of Satanic, cannibalistic child molesters that Donald Trump was secretly fighting against, the MAGA deplorables are now primed to believe anything — no matter how preposterous, crazy or just plain silly.

They are certain, for example, that the coronavirus is a deliberately concocted Chinese bioweapon. But also that it's a hoax. That COVID vaccines will kill you. But also that they contains mind-controlling microchips. They're positive the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol was planned and directed by FBI agents. But also that it was the work of the imaginary militia, Antifa. Or, they'll insist it was simply a peaceful protest.

MAGA wackos believe immigrants (all of them illegal, of course) from Latin America are being recruited to replace white Americans. But also that these same immigrants are smuggling fentanyl into the US and are child traffickers. They're convinced that public school teachers are sexually grooming students. And that these busy teachers are forcing kids to become transgender. And brainwashing them with critical race theory.

But the latest MAGA theory making the rounds may be the nuttiest of all. Apparently — and stay with us now — the NFL and the Pentagon have secretly colluded to have the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl because Travis Kelce plays for them and his girlfriend is pop mega-star Taylor Swift, who is hated by the MAGAs because (get this) she encourages young people to vote and she endorsed Joe Biden in 2020.

Clearly, were he still around, Charlie Mackay could easily write another entire book simply about the delusions of the addled Trump cult. He could call it The Extraordinary Madness of MAGAs.
