Kinda a random question, but you got any good movie recommendations?
Do I!
Reagan with Dennis Quaid is fantastic. So is Darkest Hour and Midway (2019). Catch Me If You Can is another pretty good biopic. So are The Fighter, The Iron Claw, The Infiltrator, Apollo 13 and October Sky. Not exactly a movie but the Hatfields and McCoys mini-series just got put on Prime and it's very good too. Citizen X and K-19 if you want movies about how shitty the Soviet government was.
If history isn't your thing I've got Sicario, Den of Thieves, Mr Brooks, Space Cowboys, Olympus Has Fallen, Timeline, Wrath of Man.
You like sci-fi? Interstellar, Cosmos (one of my top 5 movies ever tbh), The Martian, Alien, Aliens, Star Wars 1-6 (ie the only Star Wars movies ever made), Time Trap, Europa Report, Sunshine, Independence Day (extended cut is better) The Abyss (the extended cut is mandatory) the new Dune movies (hell the old one too while we're at it) The Thing.
Comedies? The Nice Guys, Reno 911 Miami, What We Do In The Shadows, Copout (fuck off I liked it), Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Hangover (from back when comedies were allowed to be funny).
Horror? Let's go with Horror in the High Desert 1-3 (the best found footage horror movies since Blair Witch), Candyman (the old one not the Jordan Peele slop), The Void (great modern practical effects film), Mothman Prophecies, Event Horizon, White Noise, The Conjuring, The Fog (1980 version, the newer one with Smallville Superman is trash).
Random movies! Boondock Saints, The Usual Suspects, Speed, The Bank Job, Bad Boys, Dredd, Promare, Unstoppable, Nefarious, Mad Max Fury Road, The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
If you can't find something you like here, you don't like movies.
Or you just. Like different ones than me.

My interpretations of the Main 4 Postal Dudes 🚸✂️

I understand if there are some disagreements about my perspective, but this is just how I see them
UNDER THE CUT ⬇️
Postal 1 Dude
• Holy hell’s bells scrupulosity and schizophrenia do NOT mix
• The second nicest Postal Dude. Very quiet. The definition of a man who’s been pushed to the limit because mankind has been the greatest cancer to his soul. He does make an effort to be a good samaritan to others if he deems an opportunity worth it. But if you press his buttons, he can become pretty vicious.
• He was involved in the air force for the briefest amount of time during the Gulf-War. Despite being discharged, he’s still an avid weapons collector. He has attempted to use his veteran status to uncover government secrets in guarded areas (most are considered conspiracy theories).
• Dude is able to have conversations with The Demon. He can hear him when he’s awake and only sees him when he’s dreaming. It’s not always terrorizing. The Demon has a sense of humor.
• One of his few joys is setting up a fire in the outskirts of town. Nature has a grounding effect on him. He has made friends with the birds and a few ringtails. He wishes his societal expectations didn’t chain him from his dream of living in the middle of nowhere away from it all. His second favorite joy was ice cream sundaes with strawberry sauce, but lactose intolerance is a bitch.
Postal 2 Dude
• Easily the grumpiest of the Dude quartet. Not all the time though! Once he’s free from his failed marriage and awful time in Paradise, he can be somewhat content. The Postal Dude has titanium resilience. He doesn’t worry about the grand scheme of things. We only have one life. May as well enjoy it and make the most of the present.
• We all love his snappy one liners. They get much more venomous depending on how his day went. If he were to fall in love, he would use sharp banter before settling into the softness of vulnerability. It’s a coping mechanism, okay? Nobody’s ever been so nice to him without stealing his wallet.
• Favorite TV Shows/Movies include but are not limited to: Scarface, The Big Lebowski, Sin City, Dan Vs, Reno 911, Xavier: Renegade Angel, MTV’s Downtown and X-Files.
• Dude rescued Champ at a junkyard sometime around his teens. He was a puppy then, tugging at his jeans. Poor little guy was abandoned by his mom. “Surviving out here all by yourself too, huh? C’mere… I’ll take you home. You’re a real champ for sticking around.” Needless to say, Champ’s become his emotional support dog. He loves that dog so much that he throws him a birthday party every year.
• Despite being an anti-social sociopath, he actually doesn’t exalt that about himself. The Dude is humble about it. Just let him finish his errands peacefully. He does believe that the system we live in is corrupt and people are all inherently fucked up in some way. But don’t expect his We live in a society” rant to be something valiant, no. His “We live in a society” is on par to George Constanza being denied his crab bisque at Soup Nazi’s kitchen.
Postal 3 Dude
• A confident, smoother Dude despite how much of grungy himbo he is. Lack of impulse control is on overdrive. Since starting a new life in Catharsis, he has eased his once tense shoulders into the great unknown. Dude is more in touch with his loner wolf instincts being left alone, making him somewhat more optimistic. Also draws more juvenile cartoons in his spare time
• He’s a bit clumsy when he isn’t setting fire to everything on purpose. Like if he leans against a wall and accidentally sets the fire alarm off. Or maybe throwing a box at a temp job before being told “Be careful! It’s fragile.” He has a pinch more drive than most Dudes. Still doesn’t earn the A for effort.
• Where P2 has a refined edge to his offensive personality, P3’s delivery always comes off as distasteful and on-par to a teenager learning how to make 9/11 jokes for the first time. Also SHUT UP ABOUT SARAH PALIN ALREADY-
• You hand this guy the aux cord and it is the most obnoxious playlist you’ve ever heard. Slut pop, annoying hits that get stuck in your head, outdated meme songs, douchebag rock, hillbilly bagpipes. And he isn’t fucking with you either. He’ll fold his arms behind his head with that stupid grin on his face and hum along.
• Finally having a computer all to himself, it lead to his first exposure to use the internet longer. Holy shit. This opened a whole new world of meme culture for him and his ADD to fixate on. And there’s free porn too?! Sign him the fuck up! Unfortunately, the Dude contracted terminal brain rot in the process (2010 variant). So, expect it to seep into his vocabulary.
Postal 4 Dude
• So laid back. Doesn’t really need crack anymore because he’s a huge kush stoner instead. He would be the very cool uncle in a found family way. His wisdom isn’t the best but he’s got the right spirit at least. So used to rolling with the punches that he isn’t able to get angry as often. It’s more like, “Huh. This may as well happen. Time to head home.”
• His jokes have mellowed out to be more on the crass side. That’s not to say he won’t throw in some dark one-liners though. They’re just not the same bite it used to be. “I always thought Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire was perfect for a commercial about hemorrhoids.”
• He actually got the bathrobe from a mall he temporarily worked in as a security guard. The job was the best 4 months of his life. Of all things, he got fired for urinating in the mall fountain. He left with a bird flipped in one hand and a smoothie in the other.
• 7/11 is his comfort store. There’s just something about the convenience stores that have brought him a slice of comfort in his endless trying times. Life is short. But the pathetic 2 for $4 hotdog rolls on forever.
• Dude has a vocal stim which is him meowing to the tune of whatever song is stuck in his head. It’s actually kinda cute.

saved a few anons asking personal questions not all related to panel shows, spamming answers below the cut :)
she/her!
interesting question! first, i think it's very special that you had the opportunity to study at an international university and i am glad to hear you had so many amazing experiences!
i also feel like i need to preface anything i say with... holidays are obviously different from living, and i hope people can trust that i wouldn't base an entire lifestyle decision off, like, being a fan of taskmaster lmao the state of politics, brexit, housing, prejudice, and more make it difficult to say i'd want to commit to life there — plus i really love new york city, where i do feel at home
that said, i would be open to living in the uk for a period of time, yes. i am certainly very motivated to visit a lot of places, particularly in england, and decided last year to start spending a month or two over there every year (this year i think i will be in york! maybe i can post a little about that if people care). the history and motivations behind that decision are really personal to me, but it feels...right. i am really looking forward to my time there this year and treasure being someone who works remotely and can make that happen
living permanently, it's hard to say, but speaking for my interests in history, architecture, art, cinema — it would be wonderful to explore those things more in person, yes!
i really think in the 6+ years of this blog this is the first i've ever been asked about music! which makes sense ofc it just took me by surprise!
hmmm i think this playlist most accurately expresses what i'm listening to a lot of the time + a lot a lot a lot of classical music, some dad rock, and a few balladeers like judy garland and rufus wainwright
i don't claim to be the world's biggest comedy buff or keep up the best with all of the comedy coming out of the uk and american industries — even though i do enjoy it so much! — but growing up i was very interested in comedy writing. in high school, i worked at a dvd store where people could trade in their old dvds for store credit to buy new ones, so we had a HUGE selection of not only new releases but older, sometimes nicher stuff that you typically wouldn't see at a suburban american blockbuster-like shop. i can't stress how formative this was! i would always go through the store and "beautify" the shelves (pulling all the spines up neatly, keeping everything alphabetised, etc) just to constantly look through what we had in stock, grab the old black bar criterion films before some movie buff snatched them up, touch all the special editions (physical releases were more than just steelbooks back then, like stuff like this). each of the employees had a little shelf in the back room where you could store dvds you wanted to buy when you eventually had the money, keeping them off the floor so no customer would see and buy them. i was always reserving 30+ dvds at a time and spent my whole paychecks at work hahaha
anyways, that's how i found a lot of the random british films i ended up loving — by people trading them in or me just running across them at the store: a cock and bull story, death at a funeral, this is england, gosford park, monty python, (particularly holy grail and life of brian), confetti (didn't love this one but it had a lot of actors i really liked in it so i remember watching it quite a few times) and more — but especially withnail and i and in the loop. i was fucking obsessed with in the loop, which i watched on a loop (zing!) and was ultimately how i worked my way backwards to the thick of it as well as shows like the office uk, alan partridge, green wing, fry and laurie, peep show, and more. (the thick of it and peep show were particularly everything to me!) i still have all of the dvds from the dvd store i worked at! lol
in terms of american comedy, i was obsessed with the state and then their groups' projects like wet hot american summer and reno 911 (michael showalter is a great example of a writer/director i don't think is one of the greats but follows his heart & vision, and i really respect that; my fave of his, which is genuinely so good, is hello my name is doris! underrated lil treasure). i also really loved it's always sunny, flight of the conchords, party down, arrested development, jackass and wild boys, and house md, and some of the wild characters on bravo lmao. we had this channel called logo that was my lifeline to queer content before i really had full-time access to the internet outside of a shared family computer, so i was always watching reruns of jeffrey & cole casserole, the big gay sketch show, plus the l word and queer as folk, and they also did syndication of reno 911 (but i already had all the box sets of that 😭). i was never heavy into the judd apatow/bro comedy that was so big in the 2000s, and even the 80s–90s american comedy heavily influenced by the talent at snl wasn't particularly engaging to me; of that, my favourites were probably throw momma from the train and a couple of romcoms
+ every panel show i could get my hands on! and i think because i was really engaged with sketch comedy i was also reading a lot of playwrights, especially alan bennett, harold pinter, and edward albee, who i had (and have!) huge collections of
and, yes, so many of these are at the foundation of my very favourite formats and styles of comedy: mockumentaries , black comedy or dark comedy, existential comedy, stories rooted in reality or plausibility / domestic dramedy. i used to be very engaged by sketch comedy and wanted to crack the science behind writing funny sketches, but i do think i've moved away from that format and filled that void with the improv nature of panel shows (it works for me the way i think the format of podcasts work for so many other people... i wonder if anyone will relate to that comparison)
comedy evolves so much by the decade and i appreciate a lot of the ways in which it has grown, so i don't think of it as a then vs now, which is better, whatever. and like you i can't help but revisit my nostalgic faves often!
i do think eventually he will! but rn he's lapping up that tv money hahaha my very fave is firing cheeseballs at a dog, but they're all genuinely great!

Hi evie, i hope you feel better!
What are eddie's guilty pleasure shows? I'd imagine modern!eddie unironically loving Euphoria bc Maddie reminds him of mean girl
older!dilf!eddie will ask 1000 questions about the reality show she's watching but refuses to sit down and actual watch it
mafia!eddie loves that new lotr show but wont admit it to anyone (i feel like he'd also old westerns and kitten makes fun of him for liking something so old timey)
cowboy!eddie loves police procedures, all the NCIS spinoffs
cop!eddie loves breaking bad and ozark
rockstar!eddie loves my little pony bc of the girls but hate the fandom lol
janitor!eddie lowkey gives big bob belcher energy so he'd love bob's burgers
omg this is so fun.
ok yes to modern!eddie loving euphoria. mean girl reminds him of maddy and she teases him for being fezco. “max is literally ash come on!”
older!dilf!eddie SWEARS he’s not watching the reality show. “they just scream at each other!” but he’s doing the posted up dad pose. arms crossed, legs out in a stance in front of the tv. will turn to ask “who’s this guy again” “what happened in vail?” and brielle gets so infuriated lol. also very niche but older!eddie?? the BIGGEST tom sandoval hater in the world. had kept up with every bit of it.
mafia!eddie I feel like he would want comforting shows more so than romantic. his job is so insanely gruesome and scary and demanding, he wants something easy. brainless and comforting, where nothing bad happens. so I think he’d like full house a lot. it’s just easy to watch and relax to. not too heavy or brutal or even dramatic.
cowboy!eddie yes, but also like those series they make about true crime cases?? like the act or candy or the dahmer one that just came out. he is a true crime junkie and eats them up.
cop!eddie is so fucking real for that. he loves shows about criminals lol. and reno 911 because that’s how he feels it is at work lol.
rockstar!eddie I’m gonna disagree. he hates kids shows especially like my little pony and straw berry shortcake and “those goddamed barbie movies” which is eddie for fairytopia (that zarah loved). but he does love pirates of the carribean. he was with vega a lot since the other girls were older and he’s like retired, so they chilled (as chill as vega and eddie can be) a lot and he tried to watch the max and ruby and dora but he couldn’t do it, so he was like hmm what’s a disney movie? pirates of the caribbean. most children would have been terrified… not vega. it was loud and exciting and they fought in it, and she fucking ate it up. now eddie watches them all, religiously. at every movie.
janitor!eddie being bobs burgers makes me wanna sob bc that is my favorite show on the entire planet. literally my all time favorite show, my comfort show, everything. I think he’d like adult cartoons like that, and also freaks and geeks. it only had one season but he loves it. he thinks it’s so real lol.

Titan Maximum #2: "Busted" | October 4, 2009 - 11:30PM | S01E02
The second dang episode of Titan Maximum is basically a second pilot, taking us through how the newly formed team navigates the bureaucracy of the future government in order to get a replacement giant robot to pilot and have space adventures with. There’s also a little bit of advancement with the villain of the show, a former member of the team. I don’t think I touched on that aspect even a little bit last time. The important thing to know is, they get themselves reinstated with the military and the little brother nerd kid is their new engineer, producing a new mech that’s seemingly superior in every way, except the face is hastily drawn on. The episode ends with them about to do their first actual episodic adventure.
The main characters on the show are mostly dicks. We see them do stuff that dicks do to be dicks and for no other reason other than because they are dicks. That’s the comedy, dicks being dicks. Okay. That’s fine, I guess, if you're not me. In this one we have a flashback to them raping the “statue of unity”, because they were drunk and acting arrogantly for, again, no real reason. Then at one point they do a joke where a grunt foot soldier in another part of the story says an obvious sexual joke out loud and there’s pronounced awkward silence. It’s just like, man, what point are you even making here?
There wasn’t a single funny joke in this whole episode. I started getting actually pissed off. So much so that I failed to keep good notes for this episode; I literally wrote “JESUS FUCKING CHRIST THIS SUCKS” in a few different iterations without saying what I was reacting to. I should’ve been writing stuff like “the mean slut is showing her tits and being nasty.” Why, it’s like a season three episode of Sealab 2021, except for it probably took a year to animate instead of an afternoon.
I watched this on adultswim.com, and I’m probably going to get a DVD or download of this or something to watch instead. I was literally getting like, cartoonishly angry at this show, so much so that I started punching stuff. I am a lunatic, yes, but usually bad shows don’t upset me this much. Then, midway through the episode? I swear to fucking god, there was like 4 minutes of ads. They just jammed a commercial break in and it took for fucking ever. Every time a new ad started I actually started growling. Lotta ads for new shows coming soon to HBOMax. They all look like shit. Goddamn, I have never hated an app more than that app. I am thankful I don’t actually pay for it myself.
To make it even worse: the one thing I stated as a positive about this show was the closing credits, which they interrupt for a lame callback joke. Then after the credits are over, they include a tag where a housekeeper explains an earlier joke where somebody pees in their space suit thinking it has a waste collection receptacle even though it doesn’t. Yeah, I saw that episode of Venture Bros. too.
MAIL BAG
got me katanas i want you to know, slicing up doors i want you to know, girl it's home movies i want you to know, don't know about you but i am wack...y coach mcguirk, wanna grow up to be, be a bob belcher
this was nice, pal, and I got a good laugh outta the deal. Well, see ya!
What can Delocated do in Season 2 to win you back? You seemed really down on it by the end. You didn't even like the part where he named all of Paul Rudd's lesser known movies.
You are full of shit! I literally named the final episode my favorite episode so far. I think all the feelings I had for the show roughly resembled the feelings I had for it back when it premiered. You're ignorant, pal.
He was in Anchorman, and The 40 Year Old Virgin, he was in The Shape of Things. He was in Clueless and Romeo + Juliet. He did a thing in Reno 911: Miami. The Cider House Rules. P.S. The Oh In Ohio. Knocked Up. He had a series of Broadway credits: The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Three Days of Rain with Julia Roberts. Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center. HE WAS IN HOUSE HUNTING!
"I like this" -me. See, now leave me alone.
Honestly I really like the *premise* of Titan Maximum. it's surprisingly earnest with it's deconstruction of Voltron, the character drama, the running story had a lot of potential, it looks great, Even the implied worldbuilding is fun. But like you said, the character writing is AWFUL. It's like a time capsule of the late 2000s "Workaholics" writers' board (twitter DOT com/podimportant/status/1369836756971835402). It sucks cause I like everything else about it but it really brings it down.
I probably should've noted this in the first episode, but I've never been a Voltron devotee. I don't remember ever watching it as a kid, and I've only seen a couple episodes as an Adult out of curiosity. So some of this show is probably lost on me. But the writing is so bad, I would highly doubt it would add anything for me.

Here’s the Comedy Central schedule for Monday, March 21 to Sunday, March 27, 2011.
Honestly, this schedule is weirdly nostalgic for me, not just because I remember this era like I remember a good memory, but this was also when I had been watching some South Park on Demand (when I was 5-6, once again, I had a weird childhood with not a lot of limitation). Honestly, when I see those episodes, I see them like how I see Johnny Test or SpongeBob, a great TV Show from my childhood (although South Park was not for children)
Another thing I really like from this schedule was that Futurama had some decent rerun slots (early evening slot, 3 primetime slots on Thursday, and some overnight slots), and I had only seen bits and pieces of the show (once again, I was 5, nearly 6, the theme song was great, remember seeing it a couple times on Netflix, hadn't really got into the show until FXX got it in 2021). The final show to round out the big 3 of early 2010s Comedy Central was Tosh.0, which had only been big because the Internet was big in the early 2010s, and Cable wanted to market it to their viewers.
Unlike the modern Comedy Central of Today, there had been movies during the daytime slots, and a couple of reruns of The Daily Show (then hosted by Jon Stewart), and The Colbert Report (hosted by the current Late Show host), and RENO 911! was used as time filler if a movie went short.
Oh, yeah, and Scrubs was on the channel during the time, definitely a great show for the time (and even today, besides the final season when they changed the Hospital to a Med School and a lot of the cast left). and Chappelle's Show had gotten some good rerun slots, which is funny, given the show ended in 2004, and Season 3 was only 2 episodes and aired in 2006.
Here’s what was new that week:
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart - Mon-Thurs at 11p
The Colbert Report - Mon-Thurs at 11:30p
Comedy Central Presents - Fri at 11p

Scream VI (2023)
In the Scream franchise, law enforcement officers have been trying to end Ghostface's reign of terror for more than a quarter of a century, with considerable risk to themselves (R.I.P. Deputy Dewey) and little longterm success. Can the Reno 911! crew finally put a stop to his murderous ways?
That's the question raised by a new Scream VI promo clip, which finds three of the comedy show's cops — played by Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Carlos Alazraqui — getting tipped off to the latest crimes committed by the horror movie icon.
To say their "investigation" is unlikely to end with Ghostface wearing handcuffs is putting things mildly. Alazraqui's Deputy Garcia simply denies having heard of the killer, despite declaring "Ghostface!" when shown a photo of the perp, and Kenney-Silver's Deputy Trudy seems more excited about getting a date with the "gender-fluid hottie" than securing their arrest. Lennon's Lieutenant Jim Dangle, meanwhile, loses all interest in the case once he realizes that Ghostface is currently wreaking havoc in one of the biggest cities in the world — New York — and not The Biggest Little City in the World.

Paul Reubens Dies at 70 - Pee-Wee Herman

Paul Reubens Dies at 70 - Pee-wee Herman. The entertainment world was devastated to hear the news of Paul Reubens' passing on Sunday. The actor, known for his childlike character Pee-wee Herman, passed away at the age of 70. He was privately battling cancer for years. Reubens' legacy in pop culture is undeniable, from his iconic "Pee-wee's Playhouse" television show to his successful run of Pee-wee Herman movies. Born in Peekskill, New York in 1952, Reubens' early career involved performing stand-up comedy and improv theater. It wasn't until 1980 that he created the character of Pee-wee Herman, a bow-tied, childish man who would become his most recognizable role. Pee-wee's popularity skyrocketed after being featured on "The Pee-wee Herman Show." The show began as a stage show and later became an HBO special. The success of the show led to the creation of "Pee-wee's Playhouse" on CBS, which ran from 1986-1991. The most memorable things about Pee-wee Herman was his unique voice and laugh. Reuben creted both in an effort to make his character stand out. Pee-wee's popularity led to two successful films, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "Big Top Pee-wee," both directed by Tim Burton. Pee-wee Herman character may have overshadowed Reubens' other work - Paul Reubens Dies at 70 - Pee-wee Herman Reubens' career took a hit in 1991 when he was arrested for indecent exposure during a police sting operation. The controversy led to the cancellation of "Pee-wee's Playhouse" and halted production on a third Pee-wee movie. Reubens took a step back from the public eye for some time, but eventually returned to acting in various TV shows and films. Even though the Pee-wee Herman character may have overshadowed Reubens' other work, he was a talented actor who brought many memorable performances to both film and television. He appeared in films like "Blow," "Mystery Men," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." He also had guest roles on TV shows like "30 Rock," "Pushing Daisies," and "Reno 911!" Reubens continued to work in the industry until his passing, making appearances on shows like "Gotham" and "The Blacklist." Paul Reubens may have passed away, but his legacy as Pee-wee Herman will live on forever. His unique brand of comedy and his unforgettable character brought joy and laughter to audiences around the world. It's impossible to imagine the world of comedy without his contributions. Rest in peace, Paul Reubens, and thank you for all the laughs. Paul Reubens Dies at 70 - Pee-wee Herman Read the full article

“In every conflict there are casualties. The question is what is gained and what is lost?”
-Hoffa
youtube
Directed by Danny DeVito, written by David Mamet, and starring Jack Nicholson, today’s Movie Life Lesson comes courtesy of “Hoffa.”
I am choosing this 1992 biopic for this week’s Movie Life Lesson because of the looming Hollywood writer's strike. The strike happening hinges on whether the screenwriters who write the movies and the TV shows watched by audiences all over the world can reach a deal with the AMPTP, the studios that produce those movies and television shows. The contract is for three years so it is time to return to the bargaining table in an attempt to hammer out a new deal.
The deadline for a deal is May 1. Next Monday.
Last week the WGA held what’s called a strike authorization vote. Contrary to what some believe this was not a call to strike that day. It was an authorization by the guild’s members to call for a strike if a deal can not be reached. The vote was 97.9% to 2.1%. In other words, there is overwhelming support among the writers for a strike. The idea is that this unification sends a message to the AMPTP that they will not be able to sew division among guild members to force the WGA to make a less favorable deal. What this authorization says is the deal points being negotiated are important enough that it is worth it to writers to strike.
Presumably, if a deal cannot be reached between the WGA and the AMPTP by the May 1st deadline then a strike will begin on May 2nd.

For that reason I decided to re-watch the Danny DeVito-directed Hoffa (DeVito both directs and stars in the movie) seeking perhaps some wisdom, and a little inspiration if a strike does indeed occur.
Movie Life Lesson: In every conflict there are casualties. The question is what is gained and what is lost?
It is worth mentioning taking a moment here to mention what a stupendous career Danny DeVito has had in Hollywood. There are few people who can lay claim to so much success wearing so many different hats. To wit:
He starts off as an actor in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest playing patient, “Martini,” first in the off-Broadway production and then in the 1975 film directed by Milos Forman and based on the Ken Kesey novel.
In 1978, he stars in the hit television show, “Taxi” playing “Louie De Palma” which runs for five years
Over the next two decades he stars in more hit movies, among them Terms of Endearment, Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, War of the Roses (which he also directs), Ruthless People, Throw Momma From The Train (which he also directs), Twins, Other People’s Money, Batman Returns, and Get Shorty (which he also produces).
His company Jersey Films, in addition to producing Get Shorty, also produces Pulp Fiction, Gattaca, Man on the Moon (which he also stars in), and Garden State. He also produces the tv show Reno 911.
Then he returns to television as both actor and producer in the hit FX comedy series, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” playing “Frank Reynolds.”
Wow.
In the middle of this stunning career, he directs and produces “Hoffa.”
So, let’s get into the movie and take a look at the Movie Life Lesson.
Quick disclaimer: Jimmy Hoffa’s actual life is far more complex than any movie can capture. This series is called MOVIE Life Lessons. My focus are the lessons we can take from the themes and performances in our favorite movies, which in the case of biopics like “Hoffa,” are distillations of a person’s life into a story. It is not the entirety of their life. Thus this post is not meant as a referendum or endorsement of Hoffa the man, but only as a recognition of the lessons we can take from Hoffa, the movie.
The movie is written by David Mamet, in his trademark tough-talking, straightforward, streetwise staccato, dialogue, so it is perhaps not surprising that today’s Movie Life Lesson is distinctly Mametian.
During a truckers' labor strike that is about to turn into a riot, a reporter asks Nicholson’s “Jimmy Hoffa” if he could have anticipated the violence that is about to occur prior to organizing the labor strike.
Hoffa cuts him off and says
“In every conflict there are casualties, the question is what is gained and what is lost?”
Too often we try to sanitize the world, to minimize life’s inherent risks. We claim to do it for our kids. We claim to do it for the good of society. This is not to discount those feelings or some of the good that undoubtedly comes from rethinking our world and the risks take living in it. (I like seat belts for example).

However, the degree to which we engage in self-censorship in order to shield ourselves from the ugliness of the world, from inflicting emotional harm as much or more than physical harm, and from generally making ourselves feel bad about things, is, I suspect, very high.
Unfortunately, too often what ends up happening is reality comes along and smacks us in our faces.
Now, that’s life. It’s bound to happen. What really hurts is when you’re unprepared for it.
There is a funny episode of the show "Friends" that begins with the gang sitting around watching the movie "Old Yeller." Lisa Kudrow's “Phoebe” enters the apartment right before the end of the movie which she knows, sees all of her friends teary-eyed, and naively asks them why they’re so sad. It’s the end of Old Yeller, they explain. Like duh.
Phoebe has no idea what they’re talking about.
The joke it turns out is that Phoebe has never seen the end of Old Yeller . It seems her mother, never wanting to upset young Phoebe, always turned sad movies off before she saw the endings. Like when Travis has to put Old Yeller down. The teaser to the episode ends when Phoebe sees the ending of the movie for the first time and is horrified.
Cue the Big Laughs.
Cut to The Rembrandt’s irritatingly catchy, “I’ll Be There For You.”

It’s a funny joke in a tv comedy, precisely because avoidance of reality leads to reality only leads to reality biting us in the ass. Often unexpectedly.
This brings us back to “Hoffa,” the WGA-AMPTP contract negotiations, the possibility of a writers' strike, and today’s Movie Life Lesson.
The question is what is gained and what is lost?”
This lesson is applicable in more than just conflict scenarios. Forget for a moment that much of life is conflict in one sense or another, what about just as a question of measuring our own success.
A good way to determine success is by measuring what is gained and what is lost. Did you come out ahead or behind? Also, because no success comes without sacrifice.
Success lies in the answers to the questions:
1.What is your goal?
2.What did it cost you?
3. What did you gain?
4. Was it worth it?

The thing to remember about Hoffa’s Movie Life Lesson is that you want to try and applied that calculation before the fact, not after.
After the fact is what’s called simply a life lesson. That’s when we get smacked in the face. After which, hopefully, we learn our lessons.
The point of this blog is to try and learn the lessons from the movies we love so we can incorporate those lessons into our lives to be more successful. In this case, it is probably best to ask ourselves the question, “what is lost and what is gained” before we take on various challenges and accept responsibilities in life. Precisely so we don’t get smacked in the face when we do.
How do we do that? How do we measure what is gained and what is lost before we undertake an endeavor?
The answer perhaps lies in the question asked of Hoffa by the reporter in the movie… “Could this have been prevented?”
When you seek to accomplish something in your life — be it professional, personal, mental, physical, or spiritual — if it is a worthwhile pursuit, it will require of you certain sacrifices.
This is the “what is lost” part of the Movie Life Lesson.
The takeaway from this Movie Life Lesson is that it is best to try and anticipate what that might be beforehand.
This brings to mind a similar Movie Life Lesson from the movie “Spy Game” in which Robert Redford teaches:
When Is It Time To Build The Ark? Before the rain.
Point being, part of success is determined by preparation.
So, do what you can to understand the risks of something before it occurs. Even if it means facing uncomfortable truths. That way you can take steps to avoid or limit that risk, as well as your potential losses), and to increase your chances of success as well as what you stand to gain. As opposed to jumping in prematurely or going off half-cocked.
If the loss is unavoidable, then it is best to know that beforehand so you can choose whether you’re willing to suffer that loss to achieve your end goal. If the answer is yes, then best to steel yourself ahead of time.
So, how do we measure what will be gained versus what will be lost beforehand?
Make a Pro vs Con list.
Sounds funny, I know. But often life’s best tools are the simplest ones. I have a very successful friend who rarely makes a big decision without first making a pro vs con list.
Are you someone who makes pro vs con lists? If not, how do you weigh your success? Both before and after the endeavor.

One of the things which is fascinating about the internet is that when the question of a conflict or a disagreement (or a disagreement about a conflict; see Ukraine-Russia War) is posed online, the responses for and against are a kind of real-time pro vs con argument weighing whether said action/conflict/endeavor is worth it. That’s not to say that online opinions should be the guiding force, only that as a discussion of what might be gained versus what might be lost is illuminating. Especially interns of what people value.
This brings us back to the looming Hollywood writer’s strike.
Based on the strike authorization vote it seems clear that the writers have considered what we stand to lose if we do not negotiate what we consider to be fair gains contractually to compensate us for our work. And it has been deemed worthy of striking over it if those asks are not met on key issues.
The question that remains now is whether the tactics taken thus far, including the possibility of a strike, will be worth it in the end?
The way that will be measured will be in terms of what is lost versus what is gained, in terms of people’s careers, and in terms of lives.
Which is pretty much always true in life.
Here endeth the lesson.

**A quick note: I intend to discuss the specifics of the strike leading up it, should it occur. But I will be doing so in separate posts.
