Llegando al sector de Nercón de pronto sonaron las campanas. Yo iba fumando mi tabaco, despeinado, lleno de collares, pulseras y anillos. Con chaqueta y pantalón de cuero. Y además, lleno de prejuicios que había absorbido sobre la religión.

Las campanas sonaban y yo sentí un llamado inexplicable para dirigirme al templo. Atravesé un pequeño antejardín precioso, y entré a una iglesia de madera aún más hermosa. Me dediqué a recorrer milímetro a milímetro el interior, observando lo cuadros, las paredes, las figuras. Pero principalmente la gente que ahí se congregaba, emanando un calor humano de comunidad, de humildad y de alegría que me conmovió. Y a pesar de mis resquemores, decidí sentarme en la última banca. Solo.

Cuando leyeron la primera lectura sentí como si enfocaran con una luz todo mi interior. Vi mis errores, mis virtudes. Mis malas decisiones y mis buenas acciones. Esa luz me apeló con una fuerza superior a mejorar como persona, e iniciar un nuevo camino en mi vida.

De casualidad era miércoles de ceniza. Y como ya estaba totalmente maravillado, fui a que me impusieran las cenizas. En mis ojos las lágrimas tiritaban, una transformación impensada, gigante, ocurría en mi interior.

Luego, al salir de misa, todo afuera brillaba con más luz, más calma. Y por primera vez miré mi futuro no como un caos, sino como un camino iluminado por donde transitar.

I’ve only just realised that Steve Lyons - the dude what wrote this Krieg book I’m presently struggling my way through - is the same dude who wrote Dead Men Walking, the book about Krieg versus Nercons that I’ve been using as my mental yardstick for what a good book about the Death Korp looks like.

Wish I still had the damn thing but it got lost somewhere, so now I can’t check, pah.That it was written a while back and the canon has changed since then might have something to do with it, I think, or maybe my tastes in what counts as good writing has changed over the years? Anything’s possible.

Mi relación con las mujeres está condicionada por dos factores importantes. El primero es obvio, y más mal que para bien, es mi madre. Físicamente no era cercana con nosotros, lo que no quiere decir que no tuviera otras maneras de demostrarnos afecto; me trató como un posible agresor sexual siendo un niño; a su manera nos reprimió sexualmente; y abusó de mí. El segundo factor fue mi relación con las mellizas. Cuando vivimos en Castro hubo cuatro familias con las que éramos amigos. Al frente vivían los M., que conocían al tío que abusó de mi madre de antes, de cuando los tres estaban en el MIR; sus dos hijos eran de lo más simpáticos y nos llevábamos muy bien. La casa tenía tres pisos y la escalera era muy inclinada. Recuerdo que uno de los niños se cayó una vez y mi padre, que es pediatra, tuvo que ir a atenderlo de urgencia. Eventualmente también se fueron a Concepción, y posteriormente, a Santiago. En Castro alto vivieron los Q., cuyo patriarca era un veterinario que trabajaba en una salmonera; su único hijo era el típico niño que tenía todos los juguetes que se pudieran imaginar y que no prestaba ninguno; su casa olía a pescado y tenía sus juguetes metidos en un bote de pesca artesanal que tenían instalado en el living. El bote estaba lleno de juguetes a rebosar. También era el único "amigo" que tenía nintendo y era de esos "amigos" que no te dejaban jugar y que cuando sí te dejaban y perdías mucho, te quitaban el control. Nos llevábamos como la callampa. Por alguna razón me tenía mala, pero a mi hermano no. De adulto llegué a la conclusión de que lo único que me apartaba de los dos era mi color de piel. Tiempo después se fueron de esa casa a un sector que se encuentra al sur de Castro, por la costa que da al «conti», llamado Nercon. La casa tenía un terreno muy grande y tenía playa. Los V. vivían en una cuesta que daba hacia el mar. En mi recuerdo era tan inclinada como una calle de Valparaíso, pero cuando volvimos a Castro siendo más grande no pude parar de reírme de lo poco inclinada que era en realidad. Su casa estaba incrustada en una ladera, era de madera, tenía forma de «A» y tenía tres pisos. El sótano, a la altura de la calle, siempre estaba oscuro y húmedo, al punto que siempre que bajábamos a jugar estaba lleno de babosas. Tenían un horno a leña y ahí fue donde comí la mayoría de las tostadas hechas con pan casero de mi vida. Una vez uno de sus hijos, varios años mayor que yo, estaba viendo «Robocop» y en una escena en donde el protagonista escupía aceite nos dijo que en verdad comía caca. Le creí por varios años, hasta que vi la película. Eventualmente se fueron a vivir a Victoria. Y luego estaban los A., la familia de las mellizas. Nosotros vivíamos en una casa de esquina y ellos vivían al lado. Mi madre siempre cuenta que las familias se hicieron amigas porque nosotros nos hablábamos con ellas a través de las tablas de la bodeguita que teníamos. Tengo un vago recuerdo de ello, de unos dedos asomándose entre los intersticios de la madera avejentada por la lluvia incesante. Las mellizas eran "locas", ya que se andaban trepando a cuanta reja, cerca y árbol pudieran pillar. Andaban saltando y corriendo todo el rato y siempre me estaban forzando a salir de mi zona de confort. Si ya más grande era bueno para treparme a cercas, rejas, paredes, piedras y árboles se lo debo a ellas; si aprendí a treparme al cerezo que teníamos en nuestro patio se lo debo a una apuesta que ellas me obligaron a aceptar. Su hermano mayor les tenía prohibido meterse a su pieza, pero a nosotros nos dejaba con toda la confianza del mundo. También se cambiaron a Nercon, pero a diferencia de los Q., se fueron a un sector que tenía varias casas aledañas, era casi residencial. Una vez nuestra madre nos fue a dejar a su casa. Estaba lloviendo a chuzos, me acuerdo. En un momento la mamá de las mellizas tuvo que salir a hacer un recado a la esquina, así que nos dejó a los cuatro en la casa, iba y volvía, estaría afuera cinco minutos. Las mellizas aprovecharon que estábamos solos para arrancarse. Salieron al patio y se treparon una cerca que era más alta de lo que soy ahora, hecha con postes de madera pintados de blanco y una red de alambre, y se fueron a correr por los campos. Nos dejaron botados, a mi hermano y a mí. Al principio quise seguirlas, pero la cerca era tan alta que no me atreví. Pero también pasó que mi hermano, que era el menor de los cuatro, no tenía ninguna oportunidad de siquiera intentar saltarla, y como yo era el mayor, me tuve que quedar cuidándolo. Al rato llegó la "tía" y me preguntó por sus hijas. Le tuve que explicar que se habían arrancado. Nos dejó solos y salió a buscarlas, bajo la lluvia inclemente de Chiloé. Cuando volvieron las tres, las estaba retando, obviamente. A pesar de lo incómodo y cobarde que me hicieron sentir en varias ocasiones, me gustaba jugar con las mellizas. Siento que me enseñaron muchas cosas, entre ellas, a perderle el miedo al miedo. Me enseñaron que los hombres eran mucho más miserables que las mujeres, y que a pesar de lo que la gente solía decirme, las mujeres eran tan capaces como los hombres. Gracias a ellas encuentro aburridas a las mujeres que van detrás mío y fueron quienes forjaron mi preferencia por aquellas que van a mi lado o varios pasos adelante. Si me pillo sintiendo lástima por una mujer, solo puedo verla como colega o tal vez como amiga, pero nunca como una posible "conquista" sexual; y se lo debo a ellas también. Nunca voy a entender a esos hombres que dicen sentir predilección por las mujeres inseguras, no solo por lo intrínsecamente perverso de dichoso razonamiento (porque lo es), sino que porque en mi opinión, todos lo somos. No conozco a nadie que sea realmente seguro de sí mismo, lo que pasa es que hay gente capaz de vender mejor una falsa seguridad. Por otro lado, creo que las mellizas algo tuvieron que ver con la debilidad que siento por las castañas de ojos claros, he de reconocer, pero más importante aún, sí o sí tuvieron que ver con el hecho de que todas las mujeres que me han gustado me han motivado a querer salir de mi zona de confort, a querer crecer, incluyendo a todas la mujeres que he mencionado aquí, a las que no, y evidentemente, a P..
