I received in the mail a card saying that my voter registration is inactive. It looked legit and included a no-postage-necessary way to mail back a card to reactivate. I went to the online portal anyway, just to check wtf because I literally just voted in March.

Online it confirmed my inactive status (okay, so it's legit but ??) but it was simple enough to reactivate.

I did some digging and I found the policies around inactivation and found this:

If mailings have been returned as undeliverable, or if NCOA, Operation Mail, a returned mailing, or postal service change-of-address data indicates that a voter has moved and left no forwarding address or moved out of state, the county elections official shall send a forwardable address confirmation mailing to the voter at that same address, which must be in the form required by Section 8(d)(2) of the NVRA (52 U.S.C. Section 20507(d)(2)).

Sure enough, the card they sent said something along the lines of, "It looks like your address has changed."

My address has not changed.

However.

I live in a big apartment complex, and I regularly receive mail meant for my neighbors, which means they also receive mine. Perhaps they even send it back when it's incorrectly delivered.

Also, the card itself, which l picked up today, meaning it was delivered some time in the last week (when I last checked my mail), was sent IN AUGUST.

Basically, I was made an inactive voter because my local postal service fucking sucks.
