Step 1 series: the potential
I’ve decided to write up my experiences with step 1 for all of medblr. There are plenty of other resources for information about step 1 from other medblrs and reddit posts but there are so many different learning styles and mine might jive with yours. I know I spent hours looking at other people’s experiences.
So I’ll begin with my scores. This is not to brag, but it was important to me to see people’s trends to give me hope. I was an average student in med school with some above average module scores. I needed redemption from my MCAT.
MCAT: 25, 28, 27 (I retook the 28 because I had a 6 in physical sciences)
CBSE (5 weeks out): 219, slightly above average in our class
NBME 19 (3 weeks out): 220, slightly above average in our class
UWSA1 (1 week out): 241
NBME 18 (< 1 week out): 223
UW 1st pass: 61% correct
UW 2nd pass: I finished about 70% of this with 75% correct
At this point I started freaking out because I wasn’t hitting 230 and so I pushed my test back 3 days. I heard that UWSA1 was an inflated score so I was not confident in that result. So I crammed for 3 more days on the highest of yield stuff.
Final score: 242
I was so so so ecstatic to receive this score which was 1 point higher than UWSA1 for me. As weird as this sounds, I thought step 1 was easier than I thought it was going to be and it was not nearly as hard as UW questions. I left the place feeling good and like I hit 240+.
Just goes to show that you can have below average MCAT or not do too hot in preclinical but still make it up in step 1 score which is so much more important for matching. According to our school, there is no correlation between MCAT scores and step 1 scores. For reference, the average step 1 score is 228.
I’ll write in detail about the resources I used in another post (which is the most important part), how to organize these resources, and test day tips!
