NBA Hoopz is an arcade-style basketball game developed by Midway and released in 2001. Building on the success of its predecessors like NBA Jam and NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC, the game delivers a fast-paced, exaggerated take on basketball that emphasizes fun over realism. With its 3-on-3 format, it encourages flashy moves, high-flying dunks, and special abilities, making gameplay exciting and unpredictable. It was designed for both casual players and arcade enthusiasts, with simple controls that are easy to pick up but challenging enough to keep things engaging over time.
The PlayStation 2 version brings the arcade experience to life with improved graphics, smoother animations, and a more fluid overall experience. It allows players to choose from early 2000s NBA teams, featuring recognizable stars, and compete in a variety of game modes like arcade matches, tournaments, and full-season play. The courts range from realistic NBA venues to playful, thematic environments, which enhance the lighthearted atmosphere. The "on fire" mechanic, a staple of Midway's basketball titles, is present, where consecutive successful plays lead to heightened abilities. Power-ups also make gameplay even more outrageous, contributing to its wild, fun nature. The game’s focus on offense, particularly the gravity-defying dunks and slam-heavy gameplay, creates a high-octane basketball experience focused on spectacle rather than strategy.
However, I have mixed feelings about the game. While I did enjoy the fast, arcade-style action and over-the-top moves, I couldn’t help but feel like it was too similar to earlier Midway basketball games. It’s fun in bursts, especially in multiplayer with friends, where its loose interpretation of the rules and rough play shine, but it tends to get repetitive over time. The PS2 version’s visuals are polished and vibrant, and the animations, especially when it comes to dunks and flashy moves, are fluid and exciting. But despite the energetic gameplay and sound design, it lacks the kind of innovation I was hoping for. It’s great for quick, action-packed sessions, but it doesn’t really stand out from its predecessors like NBA Jam.
Ultimately, NBA Hoopz is an enjoyable arcade basketball game, but one that might not hold your attention for long if you’re familiar with earlier Midway titles. It’s perfect for players who love pulling off crazy dunks and flashy plays, but if you're looking for something more unique or strategic, this might not be the one to keep you coming back.

So a couple weeks ago ESPN apparently did a NFL broadcast where they replaced everyone with CGI, but where they replaced select players with Simpsons characters. Here is Lisa Simpson scoring a touchdown
This was a real football game. A real football game being played in the real world, and on one channel you had the "real" game, with live action players, and on another channel you had the players replaced with Mii versions of themselves, and sometimes by Moe from The Simpsons
If you're curious how this works, the important point is that the NFL already gathers motion data from players on the field for various purposes. It sounds like ESPN develops models and animations, and then the created models are mapped in real time to match the real-world data they get from the sensors. So the game data says "this player runs 10 yards", their system knows "move this player's model 10 yards". The animated broadcast runs a minute behind due to the time it takes for this to work, but also because there is a crew cueing up custom event animations - and now deciding when to swap in a character (usually for big plays). It sounds like a lot of effort, though in the NFL's case, they can make generic models for everyone bc everyone's wearing helmets. This applies to the NHL, which also gathers data on player locations in real time
But ALSO they're doing it with the NBA this year, where apparently they're going off data gathered from the cameras themselves, and they actually had to model everyone bc you can see their faces
But also they're swapping out players for Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse
If you told me this was a PS2 game called DISNEY HOOPZ CHALLENGE 2005 I would believe you in a heartbeat
New Kingdom Hearts world looks great. Love when Wemby said "Jalen Brunson knows nothing of hearts and love"
Anyway these all look silly but at least the NBA one is just a fun goof and not a campaign to try to reinterest kids in the sport that gives them concussions
So the NFL's been doing special broadcasts for kids, since a lot of kids aren't playing or liking football these days for some unstated reason. In the past these involved a Nick broadcast with slime, and a broadcast with live color commentary from Patrick Star
Their new one is a special Toy Story broadcast that takes all the player tracking data from the game, and uses it to create animated doppelgangers of all the players as toys in Andy's Room. It looks like this
This looks like a lost PS2 game called Disney(TM)-Pixar(TM) Monday Night Football (TM) Cartoon Slam. What is this
This is the weirdest way anyone's ever broadcast a Jags London game, and Yahoo! once livestreamed one on Tumblr
Also Andy is incredibly into football now I guess. Since Toy Story 3 came out in 2010 and Andy was off to college then Andy Toystory would be, like, thirty now. Did he drop out and move home and get back his old toys from that little girl and also buy a lot of little football players and he stays in his room all day making them play and telling them "it's all okay you're back now, it's time to play, like when I was a kid" and Woody's just kind of sad about the whole thing, and then Andy stalks off to the corner to cry and all the toys have to lay there and watch his breakdown bc they daren't move while he's looking at them, not just to keep the masquerade but because revealing the truth may break his already fragile psyche, which is warped by his mom pointing out to him that Sid, the garbage man, is happy and has a nice house with his husband and kids, isn't it funny, and Andy laughed but in private he was so enraged he tore apart his toys and now he's angrier that he can't put them back together, and he just has Woody and Buzz and he's telling them he fucked up, he always fucks up, WHY CAN'T ANYTHING GO RIGHT ANYMORE? and then he runs off to the attic and none of the toys know if he's more of a danger to himself or others, and the torn up ones are still alive and conscious of their splintered being and can, for the first time in their plastic existence, suffer?
Anyway, the first down chains are Slinky Dog and players phase into him sometimes. Whoa!
This is a 1:1 replication of a real-life game happening in London and it has people running into Slinky Dog and merging with him. Past broadcasts just had AR elements, this one is full-on CGI models stiffly miming real-world movements. If any kid gets into football from this they have to be told that it actually isn't CGI toys playing most weeks. Though it will be for the Jags bc they have a second London game this year

Lizzie’s Rampage! 🏙💥🦖♀️
CHAPTER TWO: Day 1 - Peoria, Illinois

⭐⭐ BREAKING NEWS ⭐⭐
Good evening. This is Nancy Scott with WBC, World Broadcasting Corporation. Tonight's top story is a world news report. I'm reporting live from Peoria, Illinois, covering the destruction of this midwestern city at the hands of three monsters; mutated human beings exposed to radiation from an explosion at the ScumLabs facility in Toxic Hollow, another Illinois town a short distance from here. I've been allowed to stay alive while reporting on the monsters, who are calling themselves George, Lizzie and Ralph, in exchange for documenting their destructive rampage across the state of Illinois, and soon, according to the monsters, the entire Earth! They think they'll be on the winning side of history against humanity's armed forces and wish to have their legacy documented for future generations. We'll have to wait and see whether this prediction of theirs comes true or not. Oh, one moment...yes...yes...okay...I’ve been notified just now by Lizzie that I am to start writing what she says down and post it to her blog, or...uh...I'll be digested without a second thought. *ahem* Well, on uh, that note...here is Lizzie's perspective on this path of destruction being carved through Illinois, and possibly your hometown soon...stay safe America...

⭐⭐ LIZZIE'S TAKE ⭐⭐
With Toxic Hollow a pile of smoking rubble, George, Ralph and I made our way to the nearby city of Peoria. It was our first step towards wiping out the state of Illinois, and someday the rest of the world! ScumLabs already did most of the work for us in Toxic Hollow with the lab explosion, but Peoria we dismantled with our bare hands from start to finish! In that sense, it was a rather significant chapter in our tour of destruction! Peoria was home to nearly 120,000 people before we showed up. That number plummeted after we had our fun!
While we there, we destroyed many homes in the suburbs and city buildings! One of them in particular caught my eye. It seemed to be some sort of video game development studio known as Game Refuge. I read the name off their sign before punching it to pieces! I wonder what kinds of video games they made...Well, it's no matter, they should have been making games about US, the MONSTERS! Maybe they'll learn their lesson now that all their precious game development equipment is a pile of scrap metal! Next time, make a game about US!!!

⭐⭐ FACT TIME! ⭐⭐
Nancy's not the only one that can do this job. CAMERAMAN!! Get my good side. I SAID MY GOOD SIDE!! There we go, you're capturing my beauty quite nicely now. Here are a few interesting facts about Peoria prior to its destruction beneath our feet!
📌 A war known as the Peoria War was fought by humans here during the War of 1812. It involved battles between Native American tribes and American settlers, and it lasted for about a month. Humans seem to fight and shed each other’s blood a lot. And somehow, we're the monsters? Why don't you humans look at yourselves in the mirror before criticizing us?
📌 Peoria is an archetype of midwestern American culture, so much so that the phrase "Will it play in Peoria?" has become something to say when questioning the mass appeal of things like stage plays, books, television shows and movies. Peoria is also commonly used as a filler town name for when one is needed in fictional stories. Well, I'll say this much; we certainly played in Peoria! And the only thing it's filled with now is the smoldering ruins of toppled buildings! Ha ha ha!
📌 Michael Jordan made his NBA debut with the Chicago Bulls in Peoria back in 1984. He was never cool enough to make it into Midway's NBA Jam, Hangtime, Showtime or Hoopz games though (The best basketball games ever! I would know. As a bit of a Midway star myself, (See? Told you I was a narcissist.) I know a thing or two about good video games, and Midway made a lot of them!). It's a shame he wasn't in Peoria when we destroyed it! I bet he would have made a nice meal.

⭐⭐ SCORE SHEET! ⭐⭐
For us monsters, destroying things is quite fun! In fact, George and Ralph started keeping score of their rampaging, so it's time I followed suit! Let's see if you can top this, boys. Dr. Veronica seems impressed! Ladies can total cities too, y'know!

Well, with Peoria wiped off the map, it's time for us three to make haste to the next city! You better have written everything down, Nancy. YES, I MEAN ALL OF IT. Don’t play games with me...where was I? Oh yes. Our hunger for RAMPAGE is insatiable!! I’ll see you all next time, when we destroy...
KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS!!!

Nba street soundtrack list

The other, and possibly most significant, aspect of NBA Street that helps it revolutionize the genre is the way that it has essentially re-invented the blocked shot. Likewise, if you only concentrate on putting the ball in the hoop and nothing else, you might find yourself at a point where you lose a lead because your foe hits a 2-point Gamebreaker that turns your three-point lead into a deficit. If you just concentrate on tricks alone, you could find yourself having to force bad shots as time is expiring on the clock, giving your opposition an advantage. And if you hit a 2-pointer, the outcome is a swing of a total of four points as the player gets two, while the opponent loses the same.Īs a result, players are forced to try and find a balance between trying to do as many tricks as possible while still remaining competitive on the court. With a standard 1-point shot, the player not only gets the point added to his total, but it's also subtracted from his opponent's score. Players are rewarded for performing tricks, combinations or special moves by having their Gamebreaker meter fill up, which when filled gives them an opportunity to hit a shot that could single-handedly change the outlook of the game. And much like SSX, this isn't something that's just for show as it's integrated perfectly with the gameplay. By pressing the trick button in conjunction with any one or combination of the shoulder buttons, the controlled player will perform specific moves in conjunction with the button presses. The two most significant of these new features is an SSX-like trick system and the re-invention of the blocked shot.įor those that have played the very first game released under the EA Sports Big label, SSX, the new trick system will give you a bit of deja vu. People fearing the same thing with NBA Street need not worry, though, as the developers at EA Canada and NuFX have added some features that might just revolutionize the seemingly exhausted genre. But instead of revolutionizing the genre, all this made most players think is that they were getting the exact same game with just another player. Gameplay To try and improve on the arcade basketball genre that seemed pretty maxed out with NBA Showtime, Midway went ahead and upped the ante by adding a third player per team with the release of its NBA Hoopz game.
