Beyond The Frame  Trip to Dungeness

The first week of our 1st semester ( Beyond The Frame) started with a mystery trip to a very unusual place called Dungeness. Dungeness is a natural reserve (even though there is a power nuclear plant next to it ) in Kent,  a unique and desolate environment that has inspired photographers and artists for years.

I loved this video in which this local lady claims that although Dungeness has changed over the 50/60 years she lived there, yet nothing in the environment can be modified. Being a natural reserve it means that nothing can be moved or altered. She talks about how "GREAT” the meaning of CULTURE is saying: “That’s keeping the things as they should be, not as people want them”. I think this phrase is extremely powerful and true, especially living in a constantly changing reality such as London and for this reason, I found Dungeness almost absurd. A place where everything remains always the same!

Another exciting part about this trip is that I have finally got to use a Medium Format Camera ( Bronica). It was easier than I expected it to be, but a bit heavy to carry around for 3 hours! I managed to shot 3 rolls of film, one Portra Colour and 2 Black&White ( which I developed myself yesterday after the lecture.)

The negatives quality look good and I can’t wait to scan them on Monday to see the difference with the 35mm.

As we are encouraged to develop an independent practice of our own and explore various photographic tecniques I am considering to practice a bit more the use of Medium Format cameras.

Pros: Image quality, negative easy to scan

Cons: big, heavy, negative takes time to change, no internal light mete

So far, these are the pros and cons that I have encountered. I will be practicing with it more to see if it is suitable for the needs of my project.
