Myra Melford — For the Love of Fire and Water (RogueArt)
RogueArt · #2 - For The Love Of Fire And Water Copy
For the Love of Fire and Water appears to be just an opening statement. Pianist Myra Melford assembled a stunning quintet with guitarist Mary Halvorson, cellist Tomeka Reid, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, and percussionist Susie Ibarra. The lineup (yes, the liner notes essay uses the word “supergroups” in the first sentence) contains a wealth of personality and adventurousness, but Melford matches it with a new concept. She uses the paintings of Cy Twombly, particularly his Gaeta Set (for the Love of Fire & Water) collection, as inspiration. The paintings rely on a kinetic approach, quick bursts of energy collected in the midst of empty space, and Melford's compositional structures follow that lead, leaving her collaborators plenty of opportunity to make their own forays.
The group could be overwhelming, but each artist manages to focus her bursts. Laubrock's tenor, for example, takes priority on “V.” Her runs carry the desired energy, but the track works because she pulls back at time. Her full expression only comes through once Melford's piano encourages her, the two artists spiraling in increasingly chaotic conversation. “III” offers a different sort of pace. Halvorson's initial guitar chords sound simply playful, and even her alternate picking offers light textures for Laubrock's soprano. The piece builds, and the group hints at something funky without getting there, Reid turning the movement into a more abstract digression while Melford insists on a central piano line.
For “VI,” the ensemble strips everything way back, leaving room for scuffling of sounds, breathy reeds, and nervous guitar. Ibarra's cymbals make an odd statement but everything else on the track holds at a whisper. For an album with this much happening, it's a nice and surprising shift. When Melford introduces the next track (“VII,” you might have guessed) with a low piano part, it carries and ominous flavor, Ibarra's accompanying whacks more aggressive in light of the quiet worry of the preceding number. Each musician gradually reintroduces herself over the next few minutes, which makes it all the more unexpected that “VIII” begins with nothing but a clapping sound. Reid plays with the beat with a daring, half-hidden line, and when Ibarra suggests a groove, Reid doesn't bite.
“IX” gives us the album's most anarchic stretch, a joy finally unleashed, and one ultimately realized by Melford on her own. If she's previously provided the order, she now shows herself as the mastermind of the chaos. The disc settles after that for its final number, reliant on Laubrock's control and Reid's ability to pick up the easy flow. The track still seeks disorientation, but it does so less through the uncontrolled energy of a Twombly scrawl and more through the focused intent of misdirection.
Melford seems committed to developing these pieces and exploring more music with the quintet. She also expects to continue looking to Twombly for inspiration. The Fire and Water ensemble covers a full spectrum already, so it's exciting to think they have more canvases left to cover, and – most clearly – the energy to do so gleefully.

Recent though: Ron Miles is probably my favorite contemporary trumpet player. He has appeared on a few jazz albums I’ve gotten into lately and every time he just blows my mind.
