Reflecting on 2023

2023 marked my tenth year as a professional critic, and it was also the first time I considered giving up the job all together. Like most people, I’ve found the past few years pretty tumultuous and anxiety-inducing. But for me, that all came to a head at the end of 2022, when I lost my swanky contract gig with FOX Digital and suddenly had to grapple with just how different my career looked from its pre-pandemic state.

I no longer had a connection with The A.V. Club, the site that served as my main home for nine years. I could no longer count on Twitter, which was once my biggest networking platform for finding new work. I’d driven myself into some hardcore burnout trying to run a podcast while building a new vertical from the ground up. And to top it all off, a close family member was hit by a car on New Year’s Day. Everyone was okay, thankfully, but helping them through a five-day hospital stay and several weeks of recovery was quite a dramatic way to start the new year.

I needed a break, and for the first time since I started my A.V. Club internship back in spring 2013, I gave myself one. I put my podcast on hold. I stopped keeping up with movies and TV shows. I took a full six months off from writing. I taught myself to embroider and started obsessively binging the back catalogue of the Boy Meets World podcast, Pod Meets World. (Shawn Hunter forever!)

In a lot of ways it was great. I desperately needed the time off and it inspired me to do fun, impulsive things, like visit Disneyland with my sister and take a road trip from St. Louis to New York with my parents. But looking back, I can also see just how manic and unmoored I felt during that time. I was living without a steady source of income, I wasn’t sure I’d ever be hired to write criticism again, and I wasn’t sure I even wanted to. The past decade of my career had felt like climbing a (sometimes wonky) staircase in a vaguely upward trajectory. Suddenly I was standing on a cliff with no bridge in sight.

I have two people to thank for getting me across that chasm. One is my old A.V. Club colleague Myles McNutt, who, probably more than he realizes, tossed me a life raft by inviting me to cover genre television on his excellent TV criticism site, Episodic Medium. Writing weekly recaps for a supportive audience was the perfect way to ease myself back into the world of criticism; to remind myself that even with a six-month break, I still had the muscle memory to write a review. And, more importantly, to remember that I really enjoyed doing it—even when covering a show as terrible as Secret Invasion. (And eventually better showslike Loki and Doctor Who.)

The other person I have to thank for my career revival is, unexpectedly enough, Taylor Swift’s publicist, Tree Paine, who for some inexplicable reason said yes when I pitched her on the idea of covering the Eras Tour as a way to launch a Substack about girl culture. “I'm willing to take the chance and hope it helps you kick off your new career path,” she wrote before sending me off to see night two in Kansas City. And I know she’s a good publicist because not only is she managing Taylor’s career, she’s apparently managing mine as well.

Without that vote of confidence from Tree, I sincerely doubt I would’ve followed through on launching Girl Culture—my longtime daydream of a way to continue and expand the work I used to do at my old A.V. Club column, When Romance Met Comedy. But I’m so glad I did. Though the idea of building a new audience in our overcrowded media landscape is terrifying, I was absolutely blown away by the initial support I received, both in people signing up to receive the newsletter and in offering to pay for it as well. While the money I make here isn’t anywhere close enough to live on (yet!), my total 2023 Girl Culture earnings wound up covering a month of my rent, which is a huge deal in an industry where I’m often scraping together a living one $100 assignment at a time.

Equally importantly, it’s been a huge mindset shift to have an online space that truly belongs to me. Where I can choose what I cover, and own my own writing in a literal sense, which has never been the case before this. For the past decade, I’ve fallen into the trap of defining my success based on the prestige of the sites I write for. Logging my first Girl Culture review on my official Rotten Tomatoes page helped me realize that I’m the one bringing value and expertise to my work, no matter where it’s published.

Of course, given Substack’s recent refusal to take a stand against Nazis, it’s difficult to uniformly praise the platform at the moment. I completely understand and respect anyone who’s stepping away from the site, either as a writer or a reader. But in a sea of imperfect options, I’m choosing to remain here for now—although I’ll let you know if that changes.

After getting back into a groove with writing over the summer, the second half of my 2023 was all about balance. My weird unemployment era at least gave me a blank slate to start rebuilding my career more intentionally. And with that mindset shift, I sought out higher paid consulting work, reconnected with old editors at places like Block Club Chicago and The Daily Beast, and got (somewhat) better at saying “no” to assignments I didn’t have the bandwidth to write—without feeling like I’d never be offered work again.

Personally, I also worked on rebuilding the sense of community I’d lost during the pandemic. I attended gorgeous weddings in Seattle, Brooklyn, and right here in Chicago, and actively worked on expanding and strengthening my support network of friends and family. And while I still have plenty of questions and anxieties about what the future of my career looks like (that’s freelancing for you!), I also feel a renewed sense of confidence in my identity as a critic and a renewed love of movies and television too. (Thank goodness!)

There was no trace of the little premature boy whose pod Myles had once been terrified of stepping away from, afraid that he would miss their child's last moments in this life if the long-necks turned out to be right and the child succumbed to the unfortunate hand that life had dealt him. Boba was still small, but he was no longer weak. No, their boy clung to life as hard as he clung to Myles right now, and that filled his fathers with pride.

Unlike Boba's constant uphill advances, Mandalore was a work in progress.

A long time would have to pass before they got Mandalore anywhere near the path to reach its old glory– a golden era that neither he nor Jango had gotten to see, because it's been way too many decades ago. It'd been so long ago, Myles even doubted Jaster had gotten to see it. But they would get there for their people, for their son, no matter what it took.

Children were sacred to Mandalorians and so, when Mand'alor Jango Fett returned after over a decade of being away, reclaimed the throne, and declared his infant son as his heir and Myles as his Mand'alor consort, everyone wanted to see the child that would grow into their next ruler. Mand'alors' families had varied reputations, and the Fetts were lucky enough that their bloodline —while burdened by a few tragedies— only provided their homeworld with mighty, honorable rulers. The same honor and might was wished upon their child, to whom many families already swore their loyalty to.

Little Boba, however, didn't seem to appreciate all the attention he received whenever they went out on their walks around the palace's grounds.

Myles watched him hide away from people, whispering comforting words about how he wouldn't allow any harm to come to him whenever he thought the child was close to getting upset. When it came to hiding from the sun, Myles shifted so he could drape his cape over Boba, shielding him from the sun and from view.

"Do you want me to carry you, Bob'ika?" he asked. Not even his helmet's modulator could take away the softness in his voice.

The 100 liveblog ep1.11 The Calm

High Stakes. The Ark is dying. The Grounders are coming. Finn got dumped twice. Lincoln is leacing.

Out in the woods two days later Bellamy and Clarke are looking for the attack, knowing it's coming. Bellamy is looking at her. LOOKING at her. He's already fallen but acting cool. Clarke is feeling bad about being a warmonger. The Ark is radio silence. Bellamy thinks they ran out of air and it makes him feel guilty.

Clarke still thinks Abby was on the exploded exodus ship. (which we no know was blown up by Mount Weather, but they didn't know that storyline yet.)

Oh Kane is getting air from a vent. A little echo of s4 when the delinquents make it back to the Ark and the air vent saves them. That's the same window that they'll have later although I don't think that Kane is in the same section as the delinquents claim later.

The delinquents are in the smoker and some jackass callsher the grounder pounder. And Murphy defends her. The beginning of his redemption? Not quite, cause he still has some nasty actions coming, but the beginning I think.

Kane is suddenly interested in survivors. Which they find. A whole bunch of them.

Kane sends Wick out with the people so he can get Jaha and Sinclair and is reisking his life. Wick won't let him do it alone. The people come back to help. Why couldn't they do more of THIS. This working together to help everyone out. Because that's true to life and true to the story, instead they have to be like NAH WERE ALL MOBS ONE SECOND A WAY FROM EATING EACH OTHER. Ugh so sick of grimdark.

Clarke realizes that the kid injured is from the bomb on the bridge. Finn looks guilty because he thought his peacenik thing was safe against bridges.

Monty has found the radio. He says something is jamming the signal. He's trying to find out why the dropship crashed. and contact the ark. Raven tells him the ark is a hole in the sky. Monty is sad about his family but Raven needs the radio for the battle com.

Clarke and Finn don't come back with the hunters and Raven feels sad and jealous. :What's it been a day and a half, she says to B. "You're mistaking me for someone who cares." Now Raven is stripping. Where else would this scene come in but it seems and awkward time, doens't it? Her seduction seems rather aggressive and angry. "If you're looking for someone to talk you down. That you're just upset and not thinking straight, I'm not that guy." yeah you are Bellamy. You just did it. IT didn't stop either of you but okay. Again. I like braven better that finn and raven. They're better as friends but still.

Clarke is still trying to save the kid. Scalpel. blood. sticks a little tube into her chest to release pressure. Anya hits Finn. Hit him harder.

Kane gets into Earth monitorng and gives oxygen to the survivors. "I gave you an order. You are bound by law to follow." Jaha

"She was my second." "You put the bomb on the bridge. You did this to her." AGAIN. I attack you. You fight back. Therefore it's all your fault.

There was absolutely no examination of this train of thought it was taken as correct. No one ever said. "If you didn't attack us, you wouldn't have been on that bridge would you?"

No raven fucking B doesn't help your heartbreak. that's not what sex is for.

Clarke trying to save Tris isn't exciting when you know how this storyline ends. It's not about character. It's about stupid grounder society and violence and pointless warmongering. And yes, how Clarke gets them out of it. But it's interesting the things I'm interested in watching and the things I'm not. I am interested in what's happening on the ark.

Also Clarke's fear that they'll kill Finn is horrible to see. He's such a freaking creep. But they don't even kill him. And Clarke is so terrified for him. He's not worth it.

Wick making jokes is good though. We really need that comic relief. "When you die can I have your shoes?" Damn I'm so mad at that actor for being a dick.

Raven realizes that Clarke and Finn didn't run off together but were with another kid and all of a sudden she's like OH they WEREN'T hooking up. For a smart girl she's stupid about finn.

Kane crawling through a tunnel to hear clanging. OH Shades of season TWO when Abby is crawling through a tunnel with clanging to save Kane from the cave in after Mount weather drops a bomb on the village. Call back. Or call forward.

The warrior (nice voice) is telling Clarke that Anya won't kill Clarke because they need a healer. He tells her that by tomorrow the delinquents will be gone. She asks about the kill scars from combat. Asks how many he has. He opens his armor. "And half were after I hurt my knee." She kicks his knee and stabs him in the throat and holds her hand over his mouth while he dies. "Shh."

I'd say that's her first kill. Not mercy kill. Kill kill. The other was being a doctor.

Raven and O. "This morning I was thinking how much easier it would be if Finn was just gone." It would be. We wish it had happened that way. Bad things would have been averted.

Fire Island (2023)

Boy, did I watch the wrong FIRE ISLAND! It’s not that I stumbled into Paramount+ thinking I’d launched Hulu and watched half of Myles Clohessy’s 2023 retro slasher film thinking I was watching the gay PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. I actually sat through the trailer, thought it looked promising and had a hot leading man, and deliberately set out to view it. It even had some good things going for it at the start. But before long I came up against some serious flaws related to the slasher genre. Basically, if you don’t have the sustaining vision of a John Carpenter or a Mario Bava or even, Goddess help us, a Sean Cunningham, your slasher tends to be one of two things. If you can’t build characters, it’s just a mindless gorefest, and if you can, it’s monstrous. Clohessy’s film falls into the latter camp.

Troy (Connor Paolo) has been a recluse since his ex-boyfriend committed suicide just as the pandemic hit, driving him into isolation. His lesbian best friend (Annie Fox) browbeats him into joining her and some others who’ve been isolating steadily for a weekend on Fire Island. Her partner even wants to set him up with a new man. Before they get there, however, a killer wearing a deer’s head has taken out a young lesbian and an older gay couple. Once they arrive, he sets his sights on Paolo and his friends.

Clohessy and his co-writers (Emma and Phil Harrell) do a good job of setting up the serous issues tormenting Paolo. They capture the relief at finally coming out of isolation when he and his friends agree to become a pod and the trauma he’s still dealing with from finding his ex-lover’s body. And Paolo and Fox are charming, empathic actors whose scenes together really pull you in. In addition, Kahyun Kim, as the flighty hostess, is a natural comic with some great line-readings. But then the killings start, and you’re so invested in the characters it’s monstrous seeing them threatened. Clohessy also writes a few checks his script doesn’t cash. The older couple (winningly played by Ramesey K. Helman and Bryan Foster) is also recovering from a trauma from years earlier that left someone dead, but nothing’s explained, and it ends up having no bearing on the plot. Paolo is twice accosted by a Scot (Timothy V. Murphy) warning him to get off the island, but that goes nowhere (though it’s funny that the closed captions turn the Shakespeare quote “unsex me here” into “and sex me here”). And though Paolo speaks warmly of his ex-, Kim tells her boyfriend he was a horrible person.  Again, nothing comes of it.

And then there’s the killer. The man in the deer’s head is a strong image, but when he’s revealed, the motivation seems like some desperate attempt to tie into the themes of trauma and isolation. And the actor is just plain bad. It’s overplaying with nothing beneath it. He doesn’t even have enough style ot make it camp. So he seems to have wandered in from another movie. By the end, I was wishing the film had been mashed up with the better-known FIRE ISLAND (2022), so that Bowen Yang and Margaret Cho could have quipped the killer into oblivion. There’s a lot to be said for having a sharp tongue.
