There’s a larp (live action roleplaying) game that I play, where there exists a creature we have dubbed a ‘Chronovore’.

This planet-sized sci-fi beastie eats time via a cool-ass external digestive system that ranges out from its main corpus (what are effectively its digestive enzymes look like glowing blue-winged angels, which are creepy as sin).

My character in this game fell victim to said chronovoric digestion and was aged 30 years by the experience. They lost what they expected to be the most valuable years of their life - the time when they expected to most make a difference to the universe.

I have a lot of emotions about this. Especially because when I look at my life aged 39 and consider the shape I am trying to hammer it into, one thought keeps recurring: I wish I had started this work sooner.

And then I consider my ADHD (a condition I am really certain I have, but am still seeking diagnosis for) and damn if I do not feel like it straight up ate decades of my life.

That’s how it feels, gang. There’s this bubbling resentful rage and grief for years spent with an invisible wall between me and what I wanted. For the nights where I spent (and still spend) revenge procrastinating and wrecking my days. For all the hours chasing short-term dopamine that was often destructive for me.

Hours. Days. Years. Eaten by a part of me that often feels like a monster squatting in my brain, hiding in my bones.

It reminds me, too, of that scene from a Hammer Horror movie where a monster expert is talking about vampires and says something like “Oh, you still think vamps are just things with big teeth that gotta bite your neck and drink your blood? Sweet baby, there’s all kinds of these creatures; some of them just fully suck your life straight out of your soul.”

This is why I don’t think I’ll ever think of my ADHD as a superpower. Or, at least, if it is: it’s from one of those gritty think piece superhero stories where your power is also a hecking curse.

I am preoccupied by what my own brain has taken from me.

And the thing is: it’s not really true. At least, not all the way true.

Those years I think of as lost were filled with good times. I made meaningful connections. I wrote poems and stories that I love. I performed art that meant something to me in front of people who enjoyed it. I consumed a lot of good media. I learned and dreamed and tried really hard to be a person I could be happy being.

But I also let a lot of the things fall into the background. I started a lot, but didn’t finish a lot. I missed the chance to work on skills that are now harder to learn because I’m older.

So I find myself cursing the Chronovore.

I nearly wrote this as a piece of fiction. If I had, I would probably have ended with the protagonist finding a way to subvert or redeem or work with the Chronovore.

Maybe the satisfying ending just this: none of us get as much time as we want. We all give time away - whether it be taxed by things we resent or gifted to what is important.

The Chronovore is not special.

And if it is not special, then it is mutable.

Maybe that is enough.

I read your ‘Curly is not an abuser’ post over on twitter and started crying. My thoughts were “f@cking finally, someone who might’ve gotten it,” because the main reason I was crying was because I deeply relate to Curly in some ways. With how everyone was saying ‘Curly is an Abuser!’ ‘Curly is a bad person!’ I started to feel about bit bad about myself because of that.

We both have a hard time getting the underlined meaning of things or hints, whether it’s in story, talked about, or shown. We don’t see it until someone quite literally points it out to us or just start talking about the hidden meaning. I also believe me and Curly are too trusting or lax in some ways. Like not being able to see the bad in people we are close to or talk often with. We might even know about some of the bad qualities beforehand and can still be strung along and be play like an instrument. I also believe that Curly with even a thought of abusing anyone would throw himself before doing. He might even throw himself faster if he actually did that, accident or not.

That is not to say Curly is completely innocent or not to be blamed at all. Those qualities I stated before, while good, are a double edged sword like any other qualities. If we are not careful with them we could end up hurting people around us or ourselves, or get into a big mess of things. That is what Curly should be hold accounted for. Even than, with how people make out to be an abuser I don’t think they can reasonably hold him accountable in the right way, and I am not sure if that makes me sadder.

I totally get where you're coming from Anon. That kind of attitude, being lax, trusting and a constant mediator isn't inherently a problem. It was the circumstances that turned that so volatile. If Jimmy wasn't who he was and so readily abusive then Curly's character would not be that detrimental, and his actions would not have such a catastrophic impact. And everyone immediately boiling down those harmless traits and villainising them does much more harm than good, especially since the character they should be targeting is Jimmy, not Curly.

Looking at it through Curly's eyes he was just doing the best he could in that situation, and it's even more understandable especially with exactly what he does. He tries to completely bubble Jimmy into this sense of just him and Curly, he makes no mention of anyone else, nothing else. He grounds him, "It's just us" or "we will figure it out", this is fawning. He's appealing to the perpetrator to reduce the fallout in any way. Which is definitely something he has done previously as mentioned in the How Fish Is Made DLC and Curly's little monologue about how it's just another trip, just until he gets what he needs, that he has big plans!

This is definitely something Curly used on Jimmy, and even more with how quickly he shuts down at the birthday party he is used to this, and Jimmy has been abusing him for a very long time. Long enough to put the seeds of doubt in Curly to not make him question or argue against his treatment.

And you're right about Curly throwing himself infront of everyone because he does it literally. The most important part that everybody overlooks is how determined he is to get to the cockpit as the ship is crashing. He knows its crashing but all he can do is try, he could have ran away, but he didn't. And again with how after Anya tells Jimmy about her pregnancy, Curly says that she should have waited for him because he wanted to be there just in case.

Curly took responsibility multiple different times that is easily overlooked because so much happens in such a short time span that people literally think he had months between knowing about Anya being raped and then the crash when it was barely a day. Just like how people easily overlook the dead pixel scene and how it also represents something to Curly as well, and just like how people overlook Anya's "I told you so"

This game is multifaceted with the biggest, main issue of all being Pony Express' negligence and abuse towards their employees which then weakens the vulnerable and enables people like Jimmy. It happens all the time in real life absolutely everywhere. All of this could have been entirely avoided if they weren't neglecting the safety of their most vulnerable and had actual locks on the doors.

Curly's kind, forgiving and trusting nature is not inherently bad. It was how it was used against him in an extremely difficult situation, which is exactly what Abusers do time and time again. He failed Anya in such a delicate way and in such a difficult situation, but its something to understand that Pony Express failed her first, failed her in all the most important ways by even allowing a situation like this to happen. It was Jimmy's responsibility to not be a rapist, but it was Pony Express for even enabling that in the first place.

"i feel like i've lost myself," you mumbled weakly.

despite hearing the defeated tone in your voice, he noticed your bouncing knee, the rapid breathing, the rage- oh my god

you felt a lump forming in your throat again, the raw honesty in his voice almost too much to bear.

but you also felt a strange sense of relief, as if his words were like a balm to the bruised parts of your soul.

the tears started flowing again, but this time they were different. they were born out of a mixture of gratitude, love, and a quiet acceptance of the truth in his words.

he held you through it, not saying anything else, but just being there for you.

and that was all you needed.

Complaining about the final boss in Shadow of the Erdtree, both in terms of lore and mechanics. Spoilers for the end of Shadow of the Erdtree:

Part 1: The Lore

I think the ending is really good and foreshadowed well in it's own story. I think it is fitting and well told. But it isn't living in its own bubble. It exists in context to a previous story directly connected to it. In the context of the entirety of Elden Ring, it sucks.

If we were just dropped in the Shadow Realm and the main game didn't exist, it would be really, REALLY good. The problem arises when also having the context of who Miquella was in the base game. His motivations in the DLC retcon the motivations from the lore of the base game. And the retcon is worse. The thing that made him fascinating was that he was the only compassionate character among Marika's children, the only one who didn't care about petty power plays because he was focused on helping people and helping his sister. That it is revealed he is just as shallow and self-centered as the rest, so much as to be willing to endanger his sister in exchange for a consort after all the lore surrounding how he wanted to help her, takes away the facets that made him unique.

This may also contribute to why there are two general camps of people who like or don't like how Miquella is portrayed. There have been a couple of years between the original game and now. Memories of the original game's lore--if people even read those particular bits of item descriptions in the first place--have had time to fade.

However, I acknowledge that item descriptions in Elden Ring intentionally have author biases. It could be said that every Miquella-related item description was told from the perspective of someone bewitched. That would make a lot of sense.

So in the end, this also is a personal preference. I think that Miquella turning out to be a brat who will sacrifice his sister for his consort is much less interesting than him being motivated to do bad things for his sister.

This leads into the overlap between pure lore discussion and mechanics.

Part 2: I CAN'T FUCKING SEE

The last boss fight is shit. Part of what convinced people that the leaks were fake, not considering lore implications, is that many people looked at the attacks that were happening and judged them to be bad.

As someone with a passing understanding of editing animations and moves in a game, something that can be done with little modding skill to create a new enemy is to use existing animations and add new effects to them. People were convinced the fight was fake because of how many moves looked similar to ones from previous FromSoft bosses with lightning effects glued on. I cannot speak to the alleged copied animations in this fight, since I don't have experience with every FromSoft game, but I don't actually think reusing old bosses and animations is inherently a bad thing. The real complaint was that it looked to be both reused animations and extra effects.

Stretch new textures over existing enemies, increase the speed of their attacks, and then add events to those attacks that spawn a bunch of effects like explosions, or lightning bolts. These are all things I could do with my limited knowledge. These are the things that some mods have done, and have gotten ridiculed for. The ridicule is because doing that demonstrates a shallow understanding of what makes a fight not just hard, but fun.

I'm no master of boss design myself, but I can say with confidence that spamming incredibly long attack chains containing effects that blind the player and prevent them from seeing the next move in the chain is bad game design. Something that has been established as an unspoken but understood rule in souls-genre games is that you should be able to dodge an attack while standing point blank in front of the enemy. Whether this is by rolling, jumping, or running away, you know what's happening from seeing the start of the enemy's animation, and you should be able to escape being hit by the attack. I also argue that by this metric, Waterfowl Dance is a badly designed move, but I digress.

Waterfowl Dance is one move in an otherwise stellar boss fight.

In the DLC final fight, I. can't. see.

The screen is covered in lightning for at least 1/3rd of the battle, often making dodging a game of guess and hope. I 100% acknowledge that I was not good at that fight, and that many of the attacks that hit me were dodge-able if I'd learned them more. But some of them were chains of attacks that demanded I blindly learn a random rhythm of button presses. On account of all the lightning from the previous attack hiding the next swing.

One of the things I actually did like about the fight was the grab being a guaranteed 2HKO regardless of health values. It would have been a great gimmick on a better fight. Where I had a better probability of seeing it so I could dodge it.

I also liked the warp-in speed effects of the boss jumping in, although such warps felt very buggy.

Were the lightning effects transparent or otherwise did not obscure the battle so terribly, I wonder what kind of fight it would actually be. Maybe the attack chains only feel unreasonable to dodge to me because I cannot see what is happening in them. It is possible that the fight itself is just bad, and the lightning is, just like in a bad mod, being used as a crutch to hide a very boring, simple moveset.

But it is impossible for me, in the game's current state, to imagine how that fight might play.

Because I can't see shit.

Part 3: The Remembrance

Turning in the remembrance and a duplicate of it just to end up with a total of 3 Radahn swords I think really shows the lack of creativity under the lightning. That is what the essence of the DLC final boss distills down to: 2 variations of a sword we already have.

If the fight had been something COMPLETELY different, perhaps we would have gotten something interesting from Miquella's side of the pair. Something that bewitches a struck enemy? I don't know.

The last fight was a spectacle, but only due to all the fancy effects that it vomited everywhere. Remove them, and I suspect there exists an uninspired base.

As harvesting season arrived, the farm became a bustling hive of activity. Y/N took it upon herself to teach Bucky how to harvest various crops—barley, potatoes, and corn. Bucky, unfamiliar with the manual labor involved, struggled under Y/N's watchful eye.

Y/N, with her deep understanding of farming, didn't hold back. She pushed Bucky to his limits, demonstrating the relentless nature of the work.

Bucky swung the sickle in an awkward arc, nearly tripping over a clump of harvested barley. Y/N, standing nearby, couldn't hold back a chuckle. "Easy there, Bucky. The crops are the enemies, not your feet."

Bucky shot her a mock glare. "Well, someone needs to tell these crops that I'm in charge now."

Y/N smirked, "I think the crops are winning this battle." She gestured towards a particularly rebellious potato that had rolled away from Bucky. "That one looks like it's staging a great escape."

Bucky lunged after the rogue potato, and in his pursuit, he accidentally knocked over a pile of harvested corn. Y/N raised an eyebrow, "Careful, Bucky. We're not going for crop domination here."

Bucky huffed, "Who knew vegetables could be so cunning?"

Y/N teased, "You've never been outsmarted by a carrot before?"

Now attempting to corral the runaway potato, Bucky grinned, "Not until today, apparently."

Together, they loaded the truck with the harvested crops, and Y/N took Bucky to the factory to sell his produce.

Bucky, gazing at the neatly packed crates, felt a mix of accomplishment and sadness. "I can't believe I did this," he muttered, pride evident in his voice.

Y/N, steering the truck, acknowledged, "You've come a long way. But remember, this is just the beginning."

Arriving at the factory, Bucky's excitement was tempered by the impending debt repayment. "It's hard seeing the money go as quickly as it comes," he confessed.

Y/N, empathizing with his concerns, added, "Farm life is a constant juggle. It's not just about growing crops; it's managing the business too."

Seeing the exhaustion on Bucky's face, Y/N decided it was time for a break. Wanting to lift his spirits, she proposed, "How about we take a break from farming? I'll teach you how to ride Alpine. It's a good skill for handling the cows and sheep."

Bucky, eager for a change of pace, agreed. "Sure, I've ridden horses before, but handling other animals seems like a different ball game."

Y/N smirked, "Well, let's make it interesting. How about a little race? You and me."

Bucky's eyes lit up with excitement. "Now, that's something I can get behind. You're on!"

Then both of them heard a female voice "Bucky."

Both of them turn around. Bucky shock seeing his crush Kate is standing behind the gate.

Kate, the supermodel, stood at the gate, casting an unexpected shadow on the carefree atmosphere of the race. Bucky's initial thrill turned into visible tension as he hastily fixed his hair and adjusted his clothes.

Y/N, sensing the shift in mood, couldn't help but feel a twinge of irritation at Bucky's sudden self-consciousness.

Feeling a surge of discomfort, Y/N excused herself, leaving Bucky to face Kate on his own. As she walked away, she couldn't shake the inexplicable irritation bubbling within her.

Kate's charming smile, as she approached Bucky, masked the intricate calculations whirring in her mind. She had been privy to Bucky's infatuation with her before he vanished from the social scene.

Recognizing the potential benefits of a connection with the heir to one of the largest companies in the US, Kate played the game, letting him believe she was unattainable.

However, her carefully laid plans crumbled when Bucky disappeared without a trace. Undeterred, Kate used her resources and connections to track him down, eventually learning about his new life through his friend Steve.

Adjusting her strategy, she decided to cast aside the hard-to-get persona and adopt the role of a supportive friend.

As Kate admired the farm's vast fields and rustic charm, Bucky tried to conceal the fact that this wasn't exactly what Kate had envisioned.

Nevertheless, he maintained a friendly demeanor, "It's a simple life, but it's peaceful. I find it relaxing."

Kate, looking around, hesitated before offering a diplomatic compliment, "Oh, yes, it's... quaint. I can see the appeal of a different pace."

Feeling proud of his newfound lifestyle, Bucky suggested, "Wanna ride Alpine and check out the animals?"

Kate agreed, trying to mask her reluctance. However, her expensive skirt wasn't the most practical choice for a farm adventure. When she realized the potential damage, regret flickered across her face.

Kate gracefully mounted Alpine, trying to maintain her composed demeanor. However, the unfamiliar scent surrounding Bucky caught her off guard.

His essence, now marked by the unmistakable fragrance of sweat and farm work, starkly contrasted to the polished and perfumed Bucky she had known.

As they rode through the fields, Kate discreetly held her breath, attempting to mask her discomfort. The rural aroma infiltrated her senses, making her regret joining Bucky on this rustic adventure.

She couldn't help but long for the lavish events and pristine environments where she and Bucky had previously crossed paths.

Suppressing her unease, Kate smiled and engaged in small talk with Bucky. Deep down, she calculated each word and gesture, determined to leave a lasting impression on the heir to the Barnes empire. Her plan to become the next Mrs. Barnes depended on it.

Amidst the forced smiles, Kate's mind raced. 'This wasn't what I signed up for. I envisioned a glamorous romance, not riding through dirt and sweat. But he's the Barnes heir, and I need to adapt.'

Arriving at Bucky's house, Kate's expectations collide with reality. The modest farmhouse stood as a testament to the simplicity of farm life. She couldn't help but wonder why Bucky, supposedly owning half the land, lived in such humble quarters.

If Bucky turned his head, he might have noticed the subtle surprise on Kate's face, mirroring his initial reaction to the farm.

Bucky, unaware of Kate's inner thoughts, proudly led her towards the house. "Here we are. Welcome to my little haven."

Kate, trying to maintain her composure, forced a smile. "It's... quaint."

Bucky, catching a glimpse of her expression, hesitated for a moment but quickly brushed it off. "Yeah, it's not the Ritz-Carlton, but it has its charm."

As they entered the house, Kate continued to assess her surroundings, her city-girl expectations clashing with the rural reality. Still excited to show her around, Bucky remained oblivious to Kate's growing disappointment.

Y/N, engrossed in her tasks, huffed as she distributed hay to her horse. Toby, stopping by with honey from his grandparents, handed it to Y/N, who promptly thanked him and handed over the payment.

Toby, curious, mentioned seeing Bucky with a famous model named Kate Hasting. Y/N, unfamiliar with Kate due to her lack of social media presence, tilted her head in confusion. Toby, enthusiastic, informed her about Kate's status as an 'It girl.'

Y/N, intrigued, stopped her work and focused on Toby. "Hasting?" she queried, contemplating the revelation.

Toby nodded, "Yeah, that's the one."

"Hmm, interesting," Y/N murmured, her curiosity piqued.

Noticing Y/N's interest, Toby continued, "Yeah, she's a big deal on social media right now."

Y/N, still puzzled, questioned, "Why is she looking for Bucky?"

Toby shrugged, "No idea. Maybe she likes him or something."

Y/N, maintaining her nonchalant demeanor, Y/N responded, "Well, that's his business, not mine."

Toby chuckled, "True, but it's kinda exciting, don't you think? The city coming to our little farm."

Y/N smirked, "Exciting or not, I've got work to do. Thanks for the honey, Toby."

Toby waved as he left, leaving Y/N to ponder the unexpected arrival of a city celebrity to their rural haven.

I did my part today in The Bad Class, it was me in the trenches with one other guy defending stories told in mediums other than books against the world (the entire rest of the class) 🫡 (things I used below the cut)

It saddens me that the academic community is so biased towards anything other than published books. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a writer myself and I adore books, but they’re missing out on so many good stories that hit so much harder in mediums other than words on a page!!! ✨Stories of all kinds are equally precious✨ pass it on

Defending movies: Inception!!! If you’ve not seen it, it deals a lot with dreams and layers of dreaming, and thinking about reality. In it, there’s a gimmick where you have a certain ‘totem’ (item) that you can use to determine if you’re in a dream or awake, and the main character’s is a top—if he’s in a dream, it will never stop spinning, but if it’s reality, the top will eventually be stopped by gravity. (Spoiler alert) At the end of the movie, the mc finally gets home to his kids like he’s been trying to the whole movie, and as he embraces them in the background a little out of focus, you see his top on the table, spinning—and right before you could expect it to start to wobble, the soundtrack peaks (thank you Hans Zimmer you master) and cuts off and the screen goes black, leaving you to your own conclusions. It’s such an effective moment and it really would not be the same in a book!

Defending video games: Crisis Core lmao. I love how it uses game mechanics to characterize Zack in such a unique and creative way!!! The DMW is the main thing that comes to mind here, in particular in the final battle, but over the whole game and how it gets you used to it as well. You get a new thing every time Zack gets a new friend, and that’s the source of your strongest attacks throughout the game, a thing you’re constantly thinking about and relying on—which is such a cool way to characterize Zack, because then you realize your thought process has basically been turned into his! He loves his friends, they’re everything to him, and they’re the source of his strength! Which makes the final battle so so devastating when they’re fading away and you get to see, nay experience, his last thoughts as they’re happening. It’s so devastating in a way I’ve rarely been devastated before, and it would not be the same in words. Also there’s the funny haha that this adhd puppy’s brain runs on gambling because he has to get extremely lucky to be able to focus on anything lmaooo

Defending comic books: Loki Agent of Asgard!!!! My beloved! So this is the comic book run where Loki becomes the god of stories, and everything about how it was done here is just. SO so genius. When I say these comic books were a formative experience for me I mean it. But I’ll focus on the things that were great specifically because of the medium here, otherwise I’d be gushing for hours. Yknow how comic books generally have little narrator text bubbles telling you what you need words to describe? And then maybe have a different one for the thoughts of the character? Well this had that, and the narrator bubbles were styled like little scrolls. When you get towards the end of the run, after Loki has realized his power as the god of stories, you get to a part where he’s facing the gods of the gods, telling them a story—and then the little narrator scrolls have the speech bubble thing drawn off from them, to Loki. It’s been him as the god of stories narrating his own story the entire time, writing his own destiny. Such a powerful moment, blew my mind—you could do something similar in a normal book I guess, but it was just so impactful here that I think it wouldn’t be exactly the same. And also, earlier (I think in the second volume), a different future version of Loki is time travelling using his story god powers to write the past to his own ends (you don’t know his connection to story yet, so this is an example of such good foreshadowing), and to do this he reaches out of the panel and jumps into the margins to travel around the story!!! Mind-blowing stunning 1000/10

The strength of books: I just realized why I like my specific imagery-laden style of writing so much in the middle of class while I was explaining this. So in On Fairy Stories (the book the discussion was about for the day), Tolkien talks about how the invention of the adjective was the most important thing for the invention of fantasy, because it helps you change things—for example you can say things like the red sky or the green sun, and people can imagine that. There’s a linguistic concept called mental models which explores how we think in metaphors to understand more abstract concepts—for example, a lot of people tend to view how electricity works in terms of the flow of water. In fantasy, we can take our words and especially our adjectives and metaphors, and we can craft new mental models that wouldn’t work in the real world, and create our own worlds doing that to great effect. I find myself doing this SO much now that I think about it! And that’s something you can do really really well with words that doesn’t lend itself as well to adaptations in other mediums.

And that’s the thing, really—you can do things to amazing effect if you write them using the strengths of the medium you choose! That’s why adaptations rarely work I think, people just don’t play to the strengths.

Lorigame (working title; hopefully will be replaced. Eventually) is a dating sim that I'm working on! I'm one of the main writers and the main artist. My friend joan @gullethead is our other main writer, seb @bastiantj is on coding, music and supplemental art, and fish @fish-mouth is our beautiful perfect project manager.

You play as Lorelei Kirch, a 21 year old engineering major at the University of Illinois, who happens to be the half-human daughter of a succubus. Lori is sweet, charming, bubbly, and both emotionally and academically intelligent. She's also attention obsessed and not shy of using underhanded means to get it. You start the game in a questionable poly relationship with your high-school boyfriend of five years, Julian, and your more recently acquired college fling, Mav.

Julian's half human, half demon, just like you, and a massive sweetheart and goofball; he's also incredibly busy, lacking impulse control, insecure about your relationship, quite frankly a bit cringe, and fucking hates Mav's guts.

Mav is a listless immortal, the daughter of a dryad and a succubus, who in lieu of finding a purpose has instead devoted herself to pure hedonism and skirt chasing over the past 600 ish years. She's laid back, fun, adventurous, and always knows how to make you laugh; shes's also a total mess, incapable of actual commitment, high 24/7, and fucking hates Julian's guts.

This tenuous state of affairs naturally comes crashing down within the first week of your senior year. During this time you also meet Urielle, the other woman in you and Mav's relationship, an actual archangel and, for some reason, a League of Legends fanatic, and Dante, a dryly sarcastic and seemingly normal human bartender who saves you and Julian's asses at the start of the game.

The game takes place over your full senior year, and all four romance options have at least one good and two bad endings, as well as three poly relationship options with their own sets of endings. We also wanted to focus on giving an incentive to still hang out with characters whose routes you aren't doing; unromanced LIs and other characters, like your roommates, will still be influenced to a degree by how you treat them.

Other miscellaneous things I figure make sense for a summary: Main theme of the game is growing up, in whatever form that takes depending on your route: for some routes that's mainly about your LI, for some it's you. We wanted to give the bad endings and nastier options in general a lot of room in the writing instead of just having them be afterthoughts, and also wanted to lean into the nice or obvious thing to say not always being the best for the character or your relationship. The supernatural elements are mostly played for comedy ala Monster Prom, but tie back into the themes of the game, especially in certain characters' routes.

Another important aspect is Lori herself; I wanted to stay away from my ultimate pet peeve of the blank slate dating sim protagonist and make a character who really shines in between player dialogue choices and has a real mind of her own, sometimes even saying things that you might not exactly want her to say. I think from what we have now she's quite charmingly terrible, and has a lot of wiggle room to push her in a better, or, if that's your thing, worse direction.

The game is heavily based on my time in school (specifically at UIUC, hence the very specific setting) and I really wanted to use that setting to its fullest potential instead as just a backdrop. As such the game focuses a lot on things like fraternities, UIUC bar culture, and the frenzied engineering academic/social experience that I had.

We have all of the writing prepared for a playable demo, several music tracks, and concrete plans for the UI, and I'm slowly chugging through sprites. Hopefully there'll be a demo sometime in the next few months!

1. Getting to run alongside the Zakru on Pa'li was the bomb. My GOD! THEY ARE MASSIVE!!

11. Was not expecting us to be knocked out for several days. Thankfully, it seems the core cast is okay. Mokasa is shooketh over Alma pulling him out of the rubble. Still a dick though.

12. They literally made a Valkyrie crash just to take out as many Na'vi as possible. Assholes.

The poor Zakru were either killed in the blast or fled in the chaos, Nesim is furious (rightfully so) and Harding's back.

13. Anufi and Alma have been kidnapped and Teylan confirmed that the brainscap machine could give someone brain damage and kill em, basically meaning that Spider could have literally died hadn't Quaritch pulled him out.

14. Was freaking out so bad during the NeroSect bit that I only got Alma out by 20 secs. And Harding was drowning Anufi in oxygen!?! WTF!!!

Also, Mokasa came in clutch, saving us at the last minute! But he got shot. Yikes.

15. Okay, maybe I get why people felt Harding's death was lackluster, but it certainly wasn't easy, so I don't know what people were talking about there.

But maybe just a cutscene of her crawling toward us with a pistol to give us that final farewell would be notch.

16. Mokasa finally takes responsibility for his actions toward the Sarentu and the Kame'tire and even has a moment of understanding with Alma. He rests with Eywa now.

17. It's over now. All those that remained of TAP are gone, so all that's left is the Secret of the Spires, DLC. And it makes me wonder who that have planned for the big bad. Surely Nor is gonna make a return, but I doubt he is gonna be the bad guy.

Pros; loved everything.

The new legendary tier weapons and gear, the development of the characters (my baby boy Teylan has grown so much) the colours of the Heartlands animals was stunning (pa'li could have been better) and the upgrade skills bonus was a clever way to spend the points you keep racking up (though that stops when you spend a final 5 points every skill bubble)

Cons; Glitches

There were a lot more glitches this time around. First, one of the Contributions Baskets isn't working and it's ironically the main camp one. I've given it like 20 seeds already and still nothing.

And then there was a tremor machine that was freaking out one of the runaway Zakru, but when I went to hack it to turn it off, nothing happened? Only when I blew it up with a grenade arrow did it work. Or maybe that was just me being a stup 😋

Either way, I loved everything about this DLC, glitches aside and it was a good addition to the Sarentu story and I can't wait to see what happens next.

just saw ur post about wanting to rant about zelda, and i wanted to ask what you thought about the sages in totk. do you think that they’re useful as they are, or should they have been the original characters (mipha, revali, urbosa, and daruk) or something completely different?

I'm not really sure, it's very dependent on a lot of factors. The sage's powers in TOTK compared to BOTW are very different and vary in usefulness.

Urbosa's power allows you to hold down your attack button and release electricity around you. Riju's power allows you to electrocute something with an arrow (although in water it spreads more and if something is near where you hit it, it probably gets electrocuted too). Riju is in this case more of a ranged weapon and better for sneak attacks than a mid-fight tactic. I think her power is more useful, because it can break rocks and is really powerful, and I like using arrows. I never really used Urbosa's power because I found it too fiddly to use.

Daruk's power creates a shield that protects you from any attack. Yunobo's power allows you to leave a line of fire and destruction that can break through most things, boulders included. This one is more circumstantial- without Yunobo's power, you wouldn't be able to progress in TOTK due to the weird red rocks (only Yunobo can break them). However, aside from the Goron quest, Yunobo is quite useless. Sure, it's useful to get through a wall of rocks but there are bomb flowers and timed bombs and Riju and boulder breakers, etc. Daruk's power is infinitely better- 3 chances every 15 (or so?) minutes to survive intense attacks from bosses and lynels and the like. Daruks power is better in this situation.

Revali allows you to fly about 30 metres upwards into the air. Tulin allows you to fly about 15 metres sideways in the air. I'm going to be honest. Tulin's power is pretty useless. Any distance you can travel with Tulin pushing you along stays about the same as if you gave yourself a 30 metre push before you went to the air. Revali's power also helps you escape monsters and get up cliffs and many things like that. Tulin's power doesn't even really affect his main quest- you can use the Zonai devices just as well. Revali will always be better despite his snide and obnoxious attitude. I love Tulin with all of my heart but it's just... not that helpful.

Mipha heals you if you lose all of your hearts (I don't think all the way but she still helps you a lot). Sidon gives you a bubble of water that you can splash at an enemy. Sidon's power is awful, not going to lie. You have chuchu jelly and splash fruit to remove the sludge. With Mipha, she can be depended on to save your life and keep you going during your most difficult battles. I love Mipha <3 Mipha wins that round by a mile.

So if you compare the BOTW champions to the TOTK sages, for the most part, the BOTW ones are a lot better. But if you look at the certain situations you end up in, you would struggle to get through the game, especially with Yunobo's power. However, I think it would have been cool to have the previous sages (that are shown in the memories), and had the current sages just help on the quest, like in BOTW. I think the powers are a bit bad, but it's made up for with the Zonai devices and Rauru's arm. I think with the BOTW champions, the game would have almost been too easy, but I did miss the aspects of healing and shielding in BOTW. I appreciate that the recharge time in TOTK is a minute fraction of what it is in BOTW however. So it really does depend.

OK TO THE HEADCANONS

• Avery and Grayson love to travel together. Grayson takes a bunch of photos, and its perfect because Avery adores sight seeing.

• Both of them have a tendency to overwork themselves, so sometimes the other will force them to take a break from Foundation work.

• Speaking of the Foundation, they share an office and they always leave each other little notes on their desks.

• Grayson loves coffee, so Avery always makes him a cup in the mornings.

• They read books together (romance, mystery, historical fiction, you name it) and have really heated (in more ways than one) discussions about the plot and characters.

• Grayson always takes Avery to different plays and musicals. Though not always Broadway, sometimes it's just the local theatre group performing!

• More often then not, they fall asleep cuddling on the couch.

• Grayson loves shopping for Avery.

• He buys her so many clothes, she had to use a second closet.

• On their travel journeys, they always visit poorer cities/countries and donate a bunch of stuff to them.

• Grayson especially loves the kids, and Avery thinks its adorable.

• Avery sometimes gets Grayson to read her children's books, and she thinks it's the funniest thing when he does the voices.

• For her twenty-first birthday, Grayson, with the help of all his brothers, organized a House-wide scavenger hunt, where with each clue there was a gift.

• The final gift was Toby. Grayson had Zabrowski distract E*e while he snuck Toby out. He also had all the contracts burned (don't ask how, Hawthorne magic), so Toby was free.

• Avery cried so much, and she kept thanking Grayson everytime she saw Toby.

• Whenever Avery gets hate comments, Grayson absolutely destroys the person on his NonErrata575 account (he can't use his main one or else he'll get cancelled or some shit idk).

• Avery got him to wear the leather pants again. That's all I'm going to say.

• They shower together, but nothing sexual. Just wash each other's hair and other coupley fluffy stuff.

• Bubble. Baths.

• They both like to swim, and Grayson teaches Avery his favorite strokes.

• Grayson is a better swimmer, but Avery is better at diving and tricks because she used to do gymnastics before her mom died.

• Avery LOVES hanging out with Gigi and Savannah. They drag Grayson along on their girl time though, sometimes, because he's basically "one of the girls" (Gigi said it first) (my friend calls a bunch of boys at my school this)

• They make a gingerbread house together every Christmas Eve, and then eat it while drinking hot chocolate and watching Home Alone (they do it religiously every year).

• Not really Avery and Grayson, but Nash is basically both of their therapists (like they go to him when they need help, not like couples counseling lol).

• Grayson sometimes has really bad days when all he can hear in his head is Em*ly telling him he's not good enough and will never be worthy of Avery.

• He gets really depressed and doesn't talk to Avery, or anyone, at all.

• When that happens, Avery gives him his space, but at night she always makes sure to give him extra kisses and cuddles, and tell him she loves him.

• It always makes him feel better.

• Every year for his birthday, Avery gets him a personalized mug, pen, and a new tie (he loves practical gifts).

• They go on double-dates with Max and Xander, and sometimes Nash and Libby.

• Beach trips every summer. Avery and Grayson absolutely love the summer heat and tropical beaches.

• Grayson also sometimes sets up one of those little fancy tent things that companies do for like couples (idk what they're called but if you've seen one you'll know what I'm talking about), and sometimes Avery does it for him.

• They get a cat to keep Tiramisu company, and name it Canolli.

• They're both allergic to birds.

• Avery makes him wear color suits sometimes (shocker I know).

• Grayson has like an Atlantic accent, which he copied from TV, but sometimes his country slips (kinda like Young Sheldon), and Avery always tries to record those moments.

• Grayson and Libby actually become really good friends because of Avery, and bond over their love of their siblings and cooking/baking.

• Same with Avery and Nash, except they bond over how they like to keep a simple life (for the most part), and didn't really care about having billions.

• Grayson never drinks when Avery does, he needs to make sure he's 100% sober in case she needs him (Grayson would drink, but he can hold his liquor well and doesn't drink a lot).

The Lost Blossom Shampoo Commercial

During my very early days on Tumblr, I was loving all the GIFs and I wanted to join the community. Along with my love of video games, I love animation and I love Cartoon Network, and I wanted to contribute even if my main Tumblr, which is all that I had back then, wasn't animation focused. I wanted to give something that nobody else has posted. I knew non-American commercials have unique animation not seen anywhere else, so that felt like a good idea. I decided, to add some unique Cartoon Network GIFs to Tumblr, to look through various Cartoon Network commercial reels on YouTube and Vimeo. One of the videos I found on Vimeo was this reel from Brendan Rogan, a producer at Cartoon Network Latin America. I found a clip of the Powerpuff Girls I had never seen at 0:32.

Wait, is this...a shampoo commercial? Seems really fitting considering the Blossom hair wave scene in The Mane Event, and I shouldn't be surprised someone decided to use something inspired by that scene in advertising. Not going to lie: I was intrigued.

After the break, my entire history of my attempt to track down this commercial.

Right after this part of Blossom that I made the GIF from is this clip of three superhero-like mascots flying around three different bottles of different hair products. The one on the left has a bubbly hairstyle that is the same color as the bubbles shown in the Blossom part, suggesting that these two clips are from the same commercial. I did not want to believe it at first, but it did fit pretty well. The Powerpuff Girls are 6 years old at the most, and they could still be using baby shampoo.

After my searches went nowhere, I e-mailed Brendan Rogan back in 2015, who was pretty much my only lead at the time, about it. Rogan asked me why I wanted to see the "full spot". I immediately recalled one YouTube video about people trying to find the guy from Active Enterprises of Cheetahmen infamy only to be met with an all caps "WHY DO YOU WANT TO KNOW THIS INFORMATION" and no further replies, and I was hoping it was not going to end like that video. I did e-mail him with honesty, saying I just wanted to see the context of the full spot, and I'm a big Cartoon Network and Powerpuff Girls fan.

Rogan did not reply back.

I did not e-mail him again because I did not want to pester someone about a baby shampoo commercial, and I was holding onto the hope that it'll appear in a upload of commercials on YouTube so I do not have to test my anxiety. Of course, it'd be in way higher quality if I got it from someone who worked on the commercial rather than a VHS recording of commercials, but I was not thinking of that at the time. At least he indirectly confirmed a full spot exists.

Years later, I found a promotional reel based on the Toonix era of Cartoon Network Latin America, dated to 2011. It advertises The Amazing World of Gumball and Johnny Bravo Goes To Bollywood, both from 2011, so I can believe the year. It seemed to be made for investors and advertisers, showing off Cartoon Network's programming, and how they can have synergy with other brands. This includes a bunch of cross-promotion. Showing up at 4:52, to my surprise, is the Blossom ad. It was almost the exact same clip seen in the Rogan reel. The keyword is "almost." I got out my video editing software, and this is what I can see:

The Cartoon Network reel does have more of the commercial we did not see in the Rogan reel, though it's just more of the mascots flying in from outside of the frame and a little bit less of Blossom waving her hair around. This does confirm to me that neither reel was showing a single clip from the full spot, but two clips from different parts of the spot, showing the Cartoon Network character and showing what that Cartoon Network character was advertising. It also reconfirms that what I am looking for is not a Cartoon Network promo, but a baby hair product line commercial.

I also notice that even with these two different appearances, we only have 2.5 seconds of what could be a 15 or 30 second commercial. That alone does make that intriguing even with the possibility that Blossom only appears for that one second and the rest is just a generic baby shampoo ad. I hope that's not it, but it would explain why the full spot was not uploaded.

I did find one other piece of this campaign. It's not from the commercial, but it is related. Maybe it was an extremely lucky Google Image Search, or I just somehow stumbled across it in one of my searches. This was from a company named Bau Print, who specializes in different kinds of printing, including printing on vehicles, and, hey look!

There they are! It's even a photo taken from a camera that wasn't edited, meaning I could see from the metadata that it was taken in April of 2010. That does narrow down the beginning end of my search, though I had no doubt that the spot was at least post-Powerpuff Girls Movie. It also made me realize a bit of lore about these three super obscure mascots: they each represent the three different kinds of intense hydration: shampoo, conditioner, and combing cream. There are no Powerpuff Girls, showing either these superheroes were not just made for the commercial, or they wanted to use them without having to contact Warner Bros. or Cartoon Network.

This picture does prove that this campaign, at the very least, got to the point where it was advertised on trailer trucks. I did have a feeling this was a part of a scrapped campaign; maybe Johnson's got cold feet for having their clean baby shampoo brand be associated with girls that have beaten monkeys, criminals, talking dogs, and clowns to a pulp. However, wouldn't it be false advertising if a campaign that fell through ended up in a video that seemed to be made for advertisers?

And that's where my search runs cold. I have searched a lot of Cartoon Network Latin America commercial breaks on and off over the years, and I even used Filmot to search YouTube's subtitles for phrases that could be a part of it, like that "salud es belleza" tagline on that truck, and the full spot remains elusive after years of searching. I guess I could just imagine what the rest of the commercial could be.

The City of J&Jville, where our heroic trio responds to a dis-tress call: Blossom, superheroine of Townsville, is having a bad hair day and won't have the confidence to beat up Mojo Jojo and stop his "turn everyone into chickens with his chicken ray" plan. Lather, Rinse, and Repeat are called to action, and with their ultra-cleaning powers, they go into Blossom's hair as she stares at the mirror, and her hair magically turns luscious again. With her newfound confidence, Blossom flies to Mojo Jojo, and knocks his teeth out, bruising him with all of her techniques, her flurry of punches, her eye lasers, and the dreaded ponytail whiplash! The day is saved thanks to Blossom, and Johnson's Baby Hidratación Intensa! (Warning: Baby shampoo will not give your baby superpowers, do not let them fight crime.)

...okay, maybe that violence wouldn't have happened, but there is only one way we can find out for sure, and I can only wish I could find that way. So uh, here's another shampoo ad starring Hanna-Barbera characters that appears to be unrelated. Yes, the Powerpuff Girls are technically Hanna-Barbera. Bye.

I’m looking for an artist to collab with for an AU

Hello! If you don’t know me already, my name is Dragon, the author of the TADC fics 5+1 and Royally Screwed (and also a funnybunny shipper). However, I am coming up with a totally new AU, something similar to the carnival and freakshow au as well as inspiration from Bendy and the Ink Machine, Poppy Playtime and Amanda the Adventurer.

I call it ‘The Amazing Digital REDACTED’ au.

In this au, you ‘the player’ play as Jax, an ex-employee of C&A returning to the abandoned building in order to find the rest of your work employees after a mysterious incident years ago. With hidden knowledge that he must enter the game in order to find them, Jax does just that while managing to retain his memories. Along with his accomplice Bubble (a helpful AI who wants to free the rest of the trapped souls) and some help from his friend Winter (yes Winter from 5+1 will be in this but that fic isn’t canon to this au) on the outside, Jax tries to fix his past mistakes and save everyone – especially a particular jester he loved and lost long ago.

Yup that’s right, Jax will be the main character of this au and you will be playing as him. Let me explain, there is a feature on AO3 that allows you to make multiple choices on how you want the story to play out, like a telltale video game if you understand what I’m saying. You will get to pick and choose how Jax goes about his adventure and receive more than one ending (with a canon ending as well). And yes, this au’s main ship is funnybunny as I believe that it deserves more recognition and I find that these two in this au are very interesting to explore (especially with their past).

However, this fic is going to take quite a long time to make and is going to be bigger than anything else that I have written in the past. That is why I want to team up with a fellow TADC/funnybunny artist (since I am not an artist and do better with writing and characters) and create a separate blog for this au to come up with comics and art together. If you’ve seen the blogs for the Carnival and Freakshow au’s, you know that with their comics and art they explore more of the world, drop some lore, do character sheets and explain the pasts of the characters. This is what I’m hoping for if I team up with an artist. This au will mostly be on tumblr however if it does well I might add it to twitter as well since I’m putting this post on twitter as well.

Here are what I have pictured for the characters so far.

Jax: Past name; Jack. Ex employee of C&A, main character and who you the player will be playing as. Before the ‘incident’, Jax used to work at C&A as part of a coding team, to make sure that there were no bugs before any games were released. While C&A wasn’t on his list of jobs to pick, it was the only one that seemed best due to the pay and the fact that they could pay for schooling for those with children. Since Jax has a little sister named Jane, and has no parental figures in his life, he takes the job in order to help pay for the both of them and to make sure that Jane gets a good education. Unlike his canon TADC counterpart, Jax is more quiet, tired and while sarcastic, isn’t all out cruel to everyone unless they are bad people (think Mike from the FNAF movie especially with his relationship with his younger sister). He becomes quite close with his boss’s daughter however, Penny (Pomni) with him starting to develop feelings for the shy girl. However, after the day of the ‘incident’ Jax is left with nothing but guilt since he knew things that contributed to that day. Now he has a chance to make things right and save everyone, and Pomni.

Pomni: Past name; Penny. Ex employee of C&A and daughter of the CEO Abel, Pomni is an extremely introverted and socially awkward person, due to being traumatised by her mother’s death. She and her father don’t have a good relationship, with reasons that will become clearer later. She was quite close to the past version of Ragatha, but other than her father, she doesn’t really have a relationship with anyone. She likes to work alone to focus on the numbers and accounting part of her job (she understands numbers more than people) until she meets Jack. Though Jack is usually a bit standoffish, he is sweet to Penny due to her shy nature and helps keep an eye on her throughout their jobs so that she doesn’t feel too overwhelmed. Overcome by his sudden kindness and protectiveness, Penny starts to develop feelings for Jax. However, after the day of the ‘incident’ she is now trapped in the game, forever a jester trapped in a box…until Jax shows up.

Here are some visuals on how I envision the characters.

Jax:

Sans the goggles, think of Jax wearing this over his grey and dirty overalls, he could also be holding a makeshift weapon like a bat or a stick so that he can fight off enemies. This version of Jax is much more serious and he is ready to fight in order to get the job done.

Pomni:

(on the last pic, focus on the makeup rather than the outfit)

Overly baggy and childish, with blue and black instead of blue and red. This design is a reminder of her past trauma and as so, is implemented into her circus features. Due to it being too big for her, it makes it hard for her to run and escape, and the ridiculousness of it all is a huge slap in the face that this is her new life now and is fully erased of her past.  Even the makeup covers up any kind of normalcy on her face.
