At the risk of giving Disney credit for layers of meaning they never intended, I think there’s another way to interpret this, and it’s not convoluted or arcane.

When I was first watching Frozen II and I saw this moment for the first time, it honestly seemed absolutely right, and not because I ever for one moment got sick of hearing Let It Go (I love the Norwegian version!) but because it’s part of Elsa’s personality.

She’s just like this. @the-blue-fairie , I definitely hear what you’re saying about this being a big moment in queer cinematic history, and it’s a big moment in Elsa’s history. And to see her act as if it's something to be embarrassed by... I can see why that hurts. But I think the gravity of it, and the fact that it's her just makes her uncomfortable.

I think it feels right for Elsa’s character that she just hates being in the spotlight. She is, at that moment in the story, queen, and has been for some years. And being queen is kind of a special exemption. Because, sure, the queen exists in the spotlight, but not for her own benefit. It’s not self-aggrandizement. It’s service. It’s her duty. Yes, everyone is looking at her, but only because she’s doing the thing she must do.

But to just stand in the spotlight and be recognised, highlighted, dare I say celebrated? It could be her very finest moment and, even when she is the only audience member, she still feels kind of uncomfortable. Like somehow she’s taking advantage of her unique position in the spotlight to hoard everyone’s (read: no one’s) attention. It just seems so perfectly Elsa to me that she would instinctively shy away and kind of roll her eyes and kind of minimize her own accomplishment.

"Congratulations Elsa!" "Me? Oh, no, I didn't do anything." "What do you mean you didn't do anything? You cast off years of repression! You unlocked your powers! You sang a power ballad AND IT WAS REALLY GOOD! You built a fucking ice palace that's still there!" "I mean... it was no big deal. Really."

If it were anyone else - certainly if it were Anna, or another member of her family - she would be right there to celebrate them, and maybe even tell them that minimizing their own victories like that isn't fair. But it's her, and the rules are different for her. In her own mind, anyway.

She's just like this, and as much as you might argue that it's pretty messed up, it's part of her. I think by the end of Frozen II, she's a bit changed, and maybe she wouldn't be so quick to dismiss herself like this. But I think that comes from what directly follows this particular moment; the discovery of the fact that she's the Fifth Spirit, and the revelation of what Runeard did, and working with Anna to right a wrong older than either of them, and eventually saving Arendelle, despite the transgression.

I'll admit that I see your interpretation, and I firmly believe that Disney, as a corporate entity, stopped caring many layers of subtlety ago. But I think this may well have come from Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. And whoever it came from, I think there are valid story reasons for it.

I still think about this passage from an essay on Frozen 2:

I may not agree with other points in the essay, but this is spot-on. And no matter what Watsonian take you try to rationalize it with, it doesn't change the fact it's an incredibly cynical attempt by Disney to pander to the people who grew sick of the oversaturation of Let it Go when Disney itself was responsible for that oversaturation.

Fourteen Days of MHA | 4/14: The Ladies

Momo returns to the kitchen with the glass jar of matches from her room, only to find the candle already lit.

“Oh,” she says. The three wicks of the pink scented candle flicker merrily. “You found the lighter, then?”

“Nope!” Mina says from where she’s standing by the counter. Tooru is kneeling on it, passing down mugs for tea.

“Oh.” Momo says again, still staring at the candle. Then she looks around for Todoroki. He is not there. In fact, there’s no one in sight.

“Do you wanna know how we lit it?” Mina asks. From the way she’s smiling, Momo is pretty sure the answer is no.

But she’s the class VP. Since moving into the 1-A dorms, the realm of her responsibilities has expanded. She must, intrepidly, proceed.

“… How?”

“Well,” Mina says, reaching for a roll of paper towels.

“No.”

“No, Yaomomo, listen—”

“No.” The stove looms ominously behind her.

“It worked really well! We threw it in the sink right after!”

Momo slams the jar of matches onto the kitchen counter with a little more force than is probably necessary. Mina pouts. “These are the kitchen matches now. They’re staying here. Forever. Just don’t—no.”

I have only ever been on two dates, one to dinner and one to a movie and both were cool. I think my ideal date would probably be staying in though? I'm a homebody to my core ♥️♥️

9-5 office job and my own apartment

I cannot remember a single movie I've watched in the last 20 years. Uhhhhhhhh. Hmmm. Y'know what. Treasure Planet. that's such a sick movie.
