Welcome to Six Miles of The Shovel!
This Project is based on the concept of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon (and yes can’t forget @ryunumber )
Just like Ryu from Street Fighter Shovel Knight is well known for appearing many different games. Ever since Shovel Knight was included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Assist Trophy it became very easy to do these connections. Where does the miles part come from? In this case, every number is a mile
Here’s a list of the games Shovel Knight has appeared in:
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (as an Assist Trophy)
- Blaster Master Zero
- Rivals of Aether
- Blade Strangers
- Brawhalla (as a skin)
- Cook, Serve, Delicious!
- Creepy Castle (as an NPC)
- C-Wars
- Fall Guys (as a costume)
- Dino Run DX
- Indie Pogo
- Move or Die
- Mutant Mudds Super Challenge
- Riverbond
- Road Redemption
- Runbow
- Runner 3
- Aegis Defenders (NPC)
- Azure Striker Gunvolt 2
- Blasphemous (as a painting)
- Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
- Just Shapes & Beats
- Pixel Noir
- The Reward: Tales of Alethrion
- Yooka-Laylee.
There could more guest appearances for Shovel Knight but right now 25 is a solid number so yeah, there’s the that Shovel Knight has appeared in these games.
What are the rules?
- Video games or other miscellaneous stuff included (movies, tv shows and books can be included if they have a connection to the video game)
- Social media will be our savior
- Parodies excluded
- Fan made projects excluded (unless is bought by a licensed company)
- Costumes excluded (however if a costume is considered a character it will be included as the character itself or I can make an exception)
- Skins included (only if it’s a model swap or texture change like in Minecraft and Fortnite)
How can I make a request?
Just ask me the name of the character with their home series so that way I can identify which character in particular you’re talking about (for example: Black Knight from Fire Emblem Path of Radiance) because of course there are characters that can have the same name.
What is a Shovel Number?
Each character will have a Shovel Number which is a number of connections directed to Shovel Knight (For example: Mario has a Shovel Number of 1 via smash ultimate).
What about limited time events?
Yes, limited time characters can be included however it will be known as a “Limited Shovel Number”.
What is the limit of Shovel Numbers?
It has a limit of 6 (for example: if a character has a Shovel Number of 7 then that won’t count).
What is it with parodies?
Parodies are simply a copycat of an existing character (for example: Symbiote Cat is a parody of Super Mario).
Is there something about fanmade projects?
If a project is fanmade that won’t count unless a licensed company has bought it (for example: DBX aka Screwattack from Rooster Teeth Games made a death battle animation between Studio MDHR’s Cuphead vs Joey Drew Studios Mascot Bendy. Joey Drew Studios bought the animation after they made a deal with Rooster Teeth Games by importing BATIM to home consoles, thanks to this the animation is now official to the Bendy Franchise)
What about Minecraft and Fortnite Skins?
If a skin is a model swap or texture change it won’t matter it will still be the character itself (although there are a few negative things about it).
What about SSBU spirits?
They’re the souls of the character itself.
What about Mii Fighter Costumes from SSBU?
We’ll get to that point later.
As of now this is part 1 of my project so get ready for part 2

2020 Backlog Progress in Retrospect
2020 was the year of finally finishing the backlog. The final game ended up being Disco Elysium back on July 1st but in the months since I’ve built up a list again. Going forward I’m hoping to keep the backlog at 10 games or less since I’ve found I do like having a wider list of games to choose from after finishing something. After finishing over 100 games in 2020 there were a ton of classics that I finished for the first time, so many so that making a top 20 list was very difficult. I’ve always made this end of year breakdowns for my own archives but I thought it would be fun to share it this year alongside the full list of what I finished!
Top 20 of 2020 First Time Finished
1 Sakura Wars (Sega Saturn) 2 Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast) 3 Dragon Quest XI S (Switch) 4 Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune & the Dice of Fate (Switch) 5 Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss (PC) 6 Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC) 7 Mega Man Legends 2 (PS1) 8 Shining Force II (Genesis) 9 Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U) 10 Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) 11 Sea of Thieves (PC) 12 Phantasy Star IV (Genesis) 13 Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair (Switch) 14 Shenmue (Dreamcast) 15 Last Window: The Secret of Cape West (DS) 16 killer7 (PC) 17 Moon: Remix RPG Adventure (Switch) 18 Maniac Mansion (PC) 19 ZeroRanger (PC) 20 VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action (PC)
Favorite game of 2020: Sakura Wars
When I was looking back at this year, the game that stuck the most with me was easily the original Sakura Wars for the Sega Saturn. Back in December of 2019 the english patch released online and I was so excited to finally be able to play the first entry in one of Sega’s biggest franchises for the first time. I had yet to play any games in the series beyond just fumbling around an import copy of various games on Saturn and Dreamcast and I was glad to be able to experience it with such a well-made fan patch. It’s a very simple strategy game mixed in with lite RPG and Dating mechanics but there’s such a great charm to how well everything mixes together. The way they mix in the animated cutscenes throughout each chapter make it feel like you’re playing a classic mid 90′s anime and it was just a nice cozy experience the whole way. I managed to play through it twice this year and tinkered around with later entrees in the series but I’m hopeful that the sequel will get picked up as a fan translation project soon, otherwise I’ll probably be going through those games the old fashioned way with a printed out GameFAQS guide at my side.

March Catch-up
So I decided to make this blog after seeing someone elses that they were doing for pretty much the same thing (Thanks Baby Bahamut). Seeing as this is march now, I have lots of catching up to do. So, here’s what I’ve beaten so far;
January:
Mutant Mudds (3DS): This was a game that I’d picked up sometime in 2012, and then kind of forgot about. I think its been sitting on my 3DS ever since, and I’ve kept meaning to get back to it. This was its year I guess, and I decided to finally beat it to start the year. I started a new game aaaaaand...instantly remembered why I never beat it.
It just feels like so much nothing. The graphics are pretty meh, story might as well not exist, and the action isn’t really that fun, more frustrating. Especially near the end of the game, the controls really aren’t tight enough to support what it wants to do. Beat it and instantly deleted it. 3/10
West of Loathing (Switch): This was a real surprise. When I read that it was from the same guys who did Kingdom of Loathing, I thought it might be ok, but it could also just be try-hard random. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the humour was actually really clever, and the combat, while super basic, was pretty fun! I also couldn’t stop exploring and clicking on every little thing to see what it did. If I had any problems, it was that the ending was a little too abrupt, and that the combat difficulty tended to be all over the place at times. Great game, and I will definitely be playing the DLC at some point. 8/10
February:
Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (GBA): Well, technically I played in on my 3DS, but its a GBA game so I’ll let it be. Anyways, what a fantastic little pocket zelda game! The world was pretty compact, but thanks to the kinstones I was always exploring, and the graphics, while being super cute, also kept things clear and easy to read. It’s pretty hard to know where to go, but with a ton of exploration even I managed to find my way to the next dungeon.
The equipment you find was super fun too; I didn’t realize that they had managed to get things like the deku leaf in a 2D zelda, and had lots of fun with it. Backtracking with them was great too, as re-exploring old areas always felt fresh. Definitely a must play if you haven’t already. 9/10
Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening (GBC): I already beat the original way back in the late 90′s, but I figured that the GBC version was different enough to call it a seperate game.
So this one definitely scratched a nostalgia itch, but it was kind of a mistake playing it after a more modern one. The items felt a little more basic, the movement a little more stilted. Still a great game, but definitely aged just a bit. And the colour dungeon was really basic, didn’t feel like much of a challenge. Again, still worth playing, but without the nostalgia glasses, its aged. 7/10
March:
Sonic Forces (PS4): So I know that this is a “bad” sonic game according to the mainstream, and I can totally see why (homing attacks barely work, kind of a dumb story, etc etc) but for some weird reason I actually kind of enjoyed the levels...so much so that I think I’ll go for that crazy grindy platinum! (Tho whoever thought of a trophy for getting 100,000 rings, I will find you and punch you). Theres just something fun about the missions, and again some of the levels I really enjoy. And the avatar dress-up (despite sounding dumb at first) is actually pretty great once you unlock a bunch of the clothing options.
A solid 6/10
Pokemon Shield (Switch): Okaaay, so this one is controversial. Maybe its just me being a pokemon fanboy, but I still really liked this entry. Sure it was really easy (mostly), but the things I love about the pokemon franchise were still here. Sure most of the monsters aren’t, but they are coming, and since I’m more interested in the competitive meta than the story, its kind of refreshing.
See, in past gens, the same pokemon have been on top forever (for the most part), and then you have the same pokemon that deal with them well, and before you know it, all the competitive tiers (shoutout to smogon) look the same as the past gen, and I’m already bored. Here, its a chance to remake them fresh, and I’ve been loving it. As well, they’ve made it WAY easier to train up competitive pokemon. I already have a team ready to go, and it didn’t take me a whole month to do it!
All in all, very happy with this entry, and can’t wait to see whats in the expansions. 8/10
APE OUT (PC): Guess this is the arbitrary “Arty” entry eh? So basically you are an ape that is breaking out of various places, and you attack by grabbing and throwing people at walls or each other. When you do, they die in a really satisfying explosion of blood. The really cool part of the whole thing is that its all set to a drum solo that encompasses the sound effects and everything. When you just start a level, its really quiet, but as the carnage starts, the beat picks up organically and you can really get into it! And the art style is so clean and simple, yet very artistic. Just a neat game all around!
After reading this, it sounds great, right? Well, there are a couple things that actually made this one kind of hard to finish. See, the game is super satisfying, until you’ve died a million times from something you had no control over; A couple examples are getting sniped from way off screen, or RNG making 6 super tough enemies appear in a room you just ran into, meaning instadeath. Also, the graphics are really cool, but some effects make it super hard to see what was going on, 5/10
What’s Next?
Right now, I’m just working on the platinum for Sonic, but next month I think I feel like playing the Full Throttle remake. Once I’ve beaten something, Ill be sure to make a post about it! Thanks for reading!

Chicken Wiggle (Nintendo 3DS) Review
I suspect most Nintendo 3DS owners who buy things from the eShop are familiar with Mutant Mudds. A 2D platformer that called back to games like Gargoyle's Quest and Wario Land VB, Mutant Mudds released fairly early in the 3DS's life and was able to take good advantage of that. To tell the truth, I'm not a big fan of it. I found it a little slow and kind of mean-spirited at times, and the more enjoyable stretches just didn't make up for the many sections of the game where I just wasn't enjoying myself at all. When the sequel Mutant Mudds Super Challenge was released, I didn't even think twice about passing on it. The basic mechanics of the series just haven't clicked for me on any level.
Its developer, Renegade Kid, went on to release many other games on 3DS eShop before the founders decided to go their separate ways in 2016. I bought and played most of them, but I can honestly say I only found one of those games to be to my liking: Xeodrifter, a somewhat non-linear action-platformer. Well, Renegade Kid is gone, but one of the companies that rose from its ashes has recently released their latest effort, and I think it's the best thing I've seen from this developer yet. Chicken Wiggle, like Mutant Mudds, is a colorful side-scrolling romp through stages littered with traps and gems. It's very much its own game, however. Whereas Mudds was about carefully shooting and jetpacking your way past increasingly nasty arrangements of enemies and instant-kill hazards, Chicken Wiggle has you zipping around stages where avoiding danger is often smarter than trying to push your way through it.
The source of that zipping is your chicken character's wormy little friend. The worm rides along in the chicken's backpack and functions as a sort of Batman-like grapple gun. Attach it to any surface and your chicken will quickly pull itself towards it. You can also smack enemies with the worm to stun them temporarily. The chicken isn't helpless on its own, though. It can peck a very short distance, which is the only way to permanently settle an enemy's hash. Chicken can also jump, of course, which you'll need to use in combination with the grapple move to make your way across more dangerous areas. There are also a number of special power-ups that will suit the chicken up in new duds, granting it a variety of abilities. These include the ability to fly by tapping the jump button, break through nearly any surface by pecking, or run with great speed, among others.
On top of those abilities, the stages themselves can hold a variety of gimmicks. You'll come across blocks that appear and disappear with each jump, gooey jelly that is sticky in the middle and bouncy on top, doors that require you to find keys, and so on. It all adds up to a game where you're constantly having new ideas thrown at you, even late in the game. Chicken Wiggle took me twice as long to play through as Mutant Mudds did, and I enjoyed myself nearly the entire way through. A big part of that is the gentler difficulty curve, to be sure. Simply finishing each stage isn't that hard to pull off. Getting all of the gems and collecting the letters F-U-N is where the challenge often lay. Oddly, I don't think the game actually tracks those accomplishments, so choosing to go for them is really just a challenge for its own sake.
Outside of the difficulty, I also really enjoyed Chicken Wiggle for its pacing and variety. You're almost always moving, and once you really get a hang of how the game's mechanics work, you can make your way through stages at a surprising speed. Between the different enemies, the mix of power-ups, and the many stage gimmicks, every stage feels different from the last. Even if all you do is play the main story in Chicken Wiggle, it's worth the trip. It's an excellent platformer with some genuinely clever level designs that poke at your curiosity, not your patience.
But Chicken Wiggle has more to offer, too. The game comes with a versatile level editor that allows you to create your own stages and share them with other players online. You have access to every piece right from the start, so if you just want to get into making stages right away, you don't need to play through the story mode. The interface works about as well as it's going to on such limited screen real estate, but you probably won't know what everything does unless you've already encountered it in the game. The toy box is a deep one, allowing you to make just about any wild idea you can come up with. You can choose from a variety of goals to end the stage with, so you can make all kinds of challenges that you wouldn't come across in the main game.
Once you've built your stage to your liking, you can share it with other players over the internet. This feature works so much better than the one in the 3DS version of Mario Maker. It works the way that game's sharing should, if you ask me. And hey, if you're not the sort that likes to make stages, you can still benefit from this mode being in the game by playing the levels other players have made. You can check out the popular stages of the moment, or search through the uploaded stages using a variety of other filters. If you enjoy a stage, you can give it an upvote so that other players can find it more easily. Again, this is how Mario Maker 3DS should have been. At the time I wrote this, there were already some really fun and interesting custom levels to play, and I'd imagine the selection will only get better with time.
Simply put, if you're into platformers, you'll find a lot to love in Chicken Wiggle. There are lots of reasons why you might not have paid it any mind so far. Maybe you think it looks too plain or generic. Perhaps you don't like the title. You've moved on from the Nintendo 3DS. You didn't care for Mutant Mudds. You think the price is too high. But I promise you, this game is more than all of that. Chicken Wiggle is this developer's best game yet, and it sits comfortably aside any of the other high-end games on the 3DS eShop. Its story mode is great all on its own and its level creator is top-shelf. If you've already got your 3DS out to play Metroid or any of the other upcoming games that will see the system on its way out the door, take some time to play Chicken Wiggle. You almost certainly will not regret it.
Chicken Wiggle is available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop for $14.99.
Disclosure: Publisher Atooi provided me with a code for Chicken Wiggle for review purposes.

Game Review - Mutant Mudds: Super Challenge
Game Review – Mutant Mudds: Super Challenge
Short Version: It’s really good, but it’s really hard. I suggest you all go play the original Mutant Muddsbefore getting into this one, for this game is absolutely relentless in its difficulty. If you guys like to play hard platformer games, then go ahead, but I highly recommend you play the predecessors first, since those are way easier by comparison, and will make for a smoother transition into

4cr Interview - Jools Watsham On Atooi
I got a chance to catch up with Jools Watsham on Chicken Wiggle and other projects he’s currently working on for release under his Atooi studio - yes, I did ask about Treasurenauts!
4colorrebellion: Hi Jools! Good to have you with us at 4cr. How is everything on your end with Atooi going full steam ahead?
Hi Antonio! It's great to be back at 4cr. Thanks for having me. Everything is going great with Atooi. It was a very challenging transition, ending Renegade Kid and starting a new company, but we're finally into the swing of things at Atooi and have some great games in the works that I am very excited about.
youtube
4cr: It's time to catch up on your projects, so lets get started by talking about Chicken Wiggle. Care to explain to our readers what the game is all about?
We started kicking around the idea of Chicken Wiggle in early 2016. At that time, it was a much smaller and less ambitious title. It has grown quite significantly since then!
The stars of Chicken Wiggle are an improbable duo: a young chicken and his best buddy – a wiggly worm – nestled in his backpack! Together, they team up for adventure to jump, peck, and worm-grapple across a myriad of perplexing platforming levels – full of fun gadgets, tricky hazards, and sneaky foes – determined to rescue their friends from the wicked witch in her sky towers.
But wait, there’s more! Aspiring game designers and playful doodlers alike can spend hours of fun hatching their own levels with the user-friendly level creator included with the game. You can even choose different gameplay rules, art themes, and provide custom hints, tips, and search tags. Once you’re ready, it’s easy to share your creations on-line with other Chicken Wiggle players via the community portal. Now, anyone can be a game designer on the go!
Players seeking more levels to play after completing Chicken Wiggle’s main story mode will find a wealth of unique levels to download, play, and rate for free! Level categories include Atooi official, popular, latest, or simply enter your own search tags or a specific level ID to locate a friend’s level.
4cr: Now that the game has been submitted for approval, have you decided on the potential release date for the game in the US and in Europe?
We don't have a specific release date yet. I prefer to wait until the game is approved so we can set a firm date that won't change. I also like to try and see what else is releasing in that time period, and avoid going up against big titles so there's a chance my game will be noticed in the sea of games out there.
4cr: It's interesting that you've settled at pricing Chicken Wiggle at $14.99 considering that indies are usually scared of even breaking the $10 barrier. How did you arrive at this price? What sets this game apart from other options on the platform?
Yeah, it was a challenging endeavor to decide upon a price for Chicken Wiggle. My knee-jerk reaction was to price it the same as Xeodrifter and Mutant Mudds Super Challenge, but when I looked at the content and features in Chicken Wiggle I quickly realized that it has a lot more in it, and features that are extremely challenging to develop.
The level count is pretty close to our previous games, standing at 48. The level editor was a massive undertaking, and something that I am proud to say turned out excellent in my personal and biased opinion. It took a lot of effort to design, implement, and test the editor to ensure it was easy to use, stable, and also offer a sprinkle of fun and charm while using it.
The online community was another massive undertaking, pushing us into new territory. Not only was there the big technical challenge of developing it, but also the logistical design challenge of how to handle and present it all to the user in an easy to navigate and digestible manner. Again though, in the end I am very happy with the final results. We really pushed ourselves to make it all that it could be.
And finally, we left the option of whether we were going to support stereoscopic 3D or not until closer to the end. It is sometimes best to wait until you have all of the assets in a game before applying an effect - even though, it can generate some rework of assets to make the two things work in harmony. Honestly, the fact that Mario Maker on 3DS does not support 3D pushed us to want to support it in Chicken Wiggle. It's one more feature we can proudly say Chicken Wiggle supports over Mario Maker - in addition to on-line level sharing.
4cr: Since there is an edit tool in the game so that players can create new levels or try out those built by players worldwide, are you considering supporting the game post-release with new official levels straight from Atooi?
Oh, yes! Absolutely. I have already started making "Official Atooi Levels" that players will be able to download and play immediately after picking up the game. This was another consideration when determining the price of the game, knowing that I had always planned on increasing the level count at no extra charge by taking advantage of the on-line feature in the game.
youtube
4cr: OK, elephant in the room time. You've said you're back at work on Treasurenauts, something we've heard you say before. Is this time the big one? Are you aiming at releasing the game this year?
Yes, this is the big one! We are finally on the finishing path to bringing Treasurenauts to launch. I am ridiculously excited about that. We do not have a release date at this time, but a 2018 release looks more realistic than 2017. I am actively working on the game now, and my approach is to make it all that it can be. Fortunately, a lot of the heavy lifting has already been accomplished, which allows me to focus on the smaller details, such as enemies, bosses, and bonus gameplay features. There is still a lot of work to do, though. And, I am determined to work on Treasurenauts uninterrupted until it is complete. EXCITE!
4cr: With Chicken Wiggle pretty much ready to shine and that Treasurenauts is moving along nicely, are there any other projects you're currently working on that you could talk about for a bit or hint at?
We have something Mutant Mudds related coming to the Switch this year, as well as a few other secrets lined up for the future.
4cr: And now it is time for us to leave. Would you like to add anything else before we go?
Aw, is it that time already? I would just like to say thank you to you, Antonio, for your support and curiosity with our games. And, I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has played and enjoyed my games. Hearing about your positive experiences via Twitter and such is very uplifting. Thank you for your support, and I hope you continue to enjoy what we create.
