I can't believe this but, @yamanaka-shin surprised me with this art done by the awsomest Brenton!! You caan find him on Twitter as Brentonsart !!! It is Eiko with a Sable!!! Look at them!!!! Look how they rock it!! Eiko would definetly teach them how to attack Ibiki so he pays attention to her when she demands it, as the queen she is.

[Video Description Start: A video of a badger and a woods walking down a small path in the woods together, with the badger leading. The badger climbs over a small, fallen log in the middle of the path, and then the coyote follows suit. End Video Description.]
Badgers and coyotes hunt together. It's a thing. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service explains that “studies have shown that this unusual relationship is beneficial for both species. The coyote can chase down prey if it runs and the badger can dig after prey if it heads underground into its burrow systems.”

If andre, cal and Rachel were all extinct animals (Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, aquatic life etc) what do you think they’d be?
OKAY SO HMMMM,, I think Rachel would be a Thylacine !! They were known to be shy and non aggressive,, and I feel like Rachel was a bit shy despite her friend group. She was concerned for Cal and was a sweetheart tew so :3
For Andre, he’d be a Sea Mink imo !! Not much is said about them, but what’s given online is that they were quite large for being apart of the Musteloidea superfamily,, but could have been important intertidal predators. They were the largest of the minks.
Cal would be a Puma Pumoides! Not much is said about Puma Pumoides either, but I think Cal resembles them. However, it is stated that they resembled pumas, and since pumas are generally intelligent and adaptive, I feel Cal would be a Puma Pumoides. Overall, he and Andre are intelligent boys, so they’d be smart animals!!

I struggle SO much with this theriotype and I don't understand why. Maybe it's the unfamiliar mammalian nature of it. So just to preface, honestly I'm probably wrong again 😑
I confirmed Virginia opossum in early 2020, but I haven't managed to hold it down for any longer time than a few months since. I bounced around between species in the Didelphis genus, then branched out into Didelphidae and a bunch of woolly opossums, then thought maybe it's not even an opossum and looked into cuscus and dasyuromorphs and and binturong (something I had thought was a theriotype way back in 2017 during my first stint in the community) and early Mesozoic gobiconodontids and metatherians (taxonomic term)...

And meanwhile I'm also trying to figure out my carnivorous mammal theriotype, starting with fox but then going back and forth between badger, red panda, raccoon, ringtail cat and otter before realizing I'm a Musteloidea cladotherian, just with certain species I don't feel "as connected to as others" like weasels and ferrets (not true), Eurasian badgers (not true), martens and fishers (not true), wolverines (very much not true) and kinkajous.
This is a kinkajou by the way:

You might even say it looks and behaves exactly like a weird placental opossum.
Need to make a userbox that just says "this musteloid is not intelligent" as my disclaimer for every questioning post here on out

Excellent example. Though Musteloidea is the probably the clade that unites raccoons (Procyonidae) and red pandas (Ailuridae) (along with Mustelidae (weasels etc) and Mephitidae (skunks)). I don't think I've seen red pandas placed *within* Procyonidae, at least not any time recently?

Phylogeny is the study of branching evolutionary histories. Understanding phylogeny helps us paint a picture of our pals like the platypus, who their ancestors were, and why they look so... distinguished today. https://youtu.be/545PhCCpmlM

#ailuridae#ailurinae#ursidae#musteloidea#procyonidae#red pandas#The fact that red pandas also have false thumb#evolved from the same wrist bone as in giant pandas#caused a lot of confusion for a long time#people thought they must be related because of that and the bamboo eating#but nope#they evolved both the bamboo eating and the false thumb separately#both genetics and fossils have now shown that clearly

since the word panda originates in its use describing what we now call the red panda, and its in the same superfamily musteloidea with racoons, its actually more fitting to call them trash pandas than it is to call giant pandas pandas

various selkies and their species because we just want to say things
neo is an owl now, specifically a tawny owl
zaryant is a southern elephant seal (also known as an Absolute Unit), janet is a harbor seal, and that one ant that really wants to be a bee is a ribbon seal
astotheles is Not actually a selkie but if he was he would be a coyote. he has a whole bunch of fox selkie ladybugs in his pack though
we still don't know what the specific name of these are but just to confirm eetl is still one of those blue bullfrogs
for legal reasons we cannot say who but there is a snow leopard somewhere. being hired to stare at people
artis is also Not a selkie but hypothetically he would be one of those white boa constrictors
we might turn "solitary wasps being musteloidea" into a convention and in that case carmina would be that highly specific trope of "fancy lady anthro skunk". we just think it's neat
leafbugs tend to turn out iguanas, chameleons, and other related lizards. they are also a lot more familiar with kabbu than they are in canon for Reasons that are mostly unrelated to them all being reptilian but that still contributes to their vaguely positive opinion of him

Oh hey I love this game! It's taught me a lot about animal taxonomy, and spawned some memes about Bird Hell (if you get Neognathae you're kind of fucked because birds are poorly categorized).
(Seriously! If you don't believe me, here's Wikipedia: "Attempts to organise [Neognathae] further, as in the Conspectus of Charles Lucien Bonaparte, were never accepted by a significant majority of ornithologists. Until the 1980s, there was little subdivision of the Aves in general, and even less of phylogenetic merit. [...] Neognathae is now universally accepted to subdivide into two lineages, the "fowl" clade Galloanseres and the Neoaves (sometimes called "higher neognaths"). The subdivisions of the latter are still not well resolved.")
Fun fact: The game uses the NCBI taxonomy database, which is somewhat outdated. However, some Metazooa players have been emailing them, which has actually led to some updates: Pinnipedia and Musteloidea are now in the NCBI database, and I personally got the NCBI to promise to fix Bird Hell soon!

guys i just found out about this site that does a daily guessing game, it’s phylogenetic wordle- so fun!!!
