Reddit: On July 1, I'm going to anger millions of users by shutting off free API use, thus destroying third-party apps, moderator tools, and accessibility functions. Twitter: Hold my beer.

Maybe if the signup widget called it "X" or if twitter.com redirected to x.com, instead of the other way around, people might call it X.
(As far as I can figure, the original article is satire - Musk has not yet made a public request that people stop calling it Twitter.)

This has two parts:
More commentary on "Musk the Twit manages to break several anti-discrimination laws and also cost himself millions by breaking a contract." (The guy he insulted owned/managed a software company that Twitter acquired... the contract says if they fire him, they owe him the full value of the company all at once instead of paid out over time as a salary. One estimate was $100 million.) (Dude's in Iceland; I have no idea if he wants to go the hassle of a US labor lawsuit. But I'd love to see him sue Musk personally for defamation.)
The "oh yeah I totally worked in that place" grift, wherein you add a bankrupt/defunct company to your resume because the company you're claiming to have worked for, doesn't exist anymore.
Twitter still exists. But Twitter's HR department is basically gone. Nobody's managing records of who works there, who used to work there, who was fired recently, who still works there but does not have access to their employee accounts. Twitter has no public outreach department anymore. There's nobody to call to ask, "did Jane Q Jobapplicant actually work for your marketing department for 3 years?"
Note that lying on most job application forms is grounds to be fired if it is eventually discovered. So be careful, folks. Make sure your applications are as honest and accurate as possible.
Just note that, if you worked for Twitter at some point in the past but lost your job since the Musk takeover - there's probably no easy record for that and the company you're applying at, will just have to take your word for it.

So. Ah. Twitter is collapsing. Which we knew, but it's happening extra-fast now.
Tumblr media
The "who unfollowed me" app is no longer usable, because tracking followers now requires the $42,000/month API access level.
Also there's a LOT of "you must login/install the app" when you try to view tweets. He's trying to lock Twitter to logged-in users and push them toward paid accounts only.
How's that going for him?

Musk has not been fined $30B, nor anything, for failing to comply with Germany's hate speech laws. Germany's Federal Office of Justice (BfJ) has launched proceedings against Twitter, and the fines could be...
Look, there's different answers for that depending on who's reporting what details. But, okay, we'll posit they could be as high as $30B. Not from that one case, but several groups have started legal action.
But the lawsuit isn't even at the "trial" stage yet; it's at "initial complaint" and Musk has the option of answering it or taking action (...like removing the illegal tweets) to make it pointless.
Still - I'm happy to see him facing legal hassles for his botched management. Let's hope the lawsuits get serious traction. Likes charge; reblogs cast.

What's up with Twitter today?
The unpaid blue checkmarks on twitter are supposed to vanish tomorrow.
News outlets are scrambling to decide if they should pay to keep their journalists’ checkmarks as part of the $1,000/month (or more) “Verified Organization” package or whether to allow employees to file their individual $8/month version as a business expense.
the $1,000/month enterprise fee comes with five affiliated accounts
(And also a company logo; additional accounts would be $50/month.) (I have no idea why a company wouldn't just expense the $8/month fee in that case, if they decided the checkmark is important at all.)
New York Times is not planning on buying the corporate version NOR reimbursing reporters for the fee.
“The Washington Post will not pay for Twitter Blue service as an institution or on behalf of our journalists," a Post spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. "It's evident that verified checkmarks no longer represent authority and expertise.”
However, Twitter is planning to let "the 10,000 most-followed organizations, and the top 500 advertisers, that have already been verified keep their status."
Unpaid accounts will also not show up in recommended feeds.
voting in Twitter polls will also become a Twitter Blue exclusive option
Currently about 0.18% of Twitter's userbase is paying for the blue checkmark - about 450k accounts total. That makes it clear that 10k "top followed" orgs is a drop in the bucket, and allowing them to keep their marks is not "twitter feeling generous" but "twitter desperately needs people to think blue checkmarks are valuable."
If they removed those along with the rest, many people's feeds would be missing blue marks entirely. The "for you" feed would include (1) accounts they follow and (2) blue checkmark tweets from total strangers, about topics they don't care about at all.

That is also "we can publish a Best of Twitter book and not credit or pay you for it."
Or, "We can publish a Best Science Tweet Threads book." Or whatever.
They may not be willing to publish fanfic or fanart - but original fic and art are fair game.
If you're still there, it's definitely time to leave.
