The Clash - “English Civil War” (1979)

On this day, February 23, 1979, “English Civil War,” the second single from Give ‘Em Enough Rope, the second studio album by the Clash, was released. Based on the American Civil War song “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” (and featuring a cover image that is a still from the 1954 animated adaptation of 1984), the song was updated by Joe Strummer in response to the rise of far right groups such as the National Front in Britain in the 70s. A warning against the rising tide of intolerance and uniformed fascism as well as a call to arms against societal injustices, the song reached no. 25 on the UK charts and no. 29 in Ireland.

In a 1978 interview published in the Record Mirror, Strummer cautioned, “War is just around the corner. Johnny hasn't got far to march. That's why he is coming by bus or underground.” And it is a war still being waged. As stated by former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins following the second election of Donald Trump, “This is not a time to be dismayed. This is punk rock time. This is what Joe Strummer trained you for.”

Today we remember director Ted Demme, who would have turned 61 today. I've written a great deal about him since I interned on his film Monument Ave and at his production company Spanky Pictures. But today I thought I'd share the 1994 music video from Rollins Band that pays tribute to Taxi Driver with Henry Rollins as a Travis Bickle-like taxi driver. I actually played this video on my cable access TV show The Eric and Mike Show when it came out.
