Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band - BRSB - new album is a mix of covers and originals

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, the mysterious steel pan outfit hailing from Hamburg, Germany have amassed a cult following around the globe. With a slew of classic 7”s and three critically acclaimed full length albums, they set a high bar for themselves, one they clearly intend on pushing even higher with this new offering. On their fourth album BRSB, Bacao are back with more of the same, but more of the same with them is inherently different. Covering songs that span genres and range from mega hits to underground album cuts, they make them their own with their unique approach to the traditional steel pans of Trinidad and Tobago. While part of the allure of a new Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band album is finding out what covers they do it is equally intriguing to see what original tunes they cooked upland this record is foul of stand out originals. The album opener, “In The Crosshairs” is a rough and tough mid tempo head nodder while both “Grilled” & “Treasure Quest” pick up the tempo with heavy African Funk influences on both. Bacao goes deep with “Hazy Memories”, a bass heavy slow burner that walks a line between hypnotic and hype. All these originals stand as testament that the term “cover band” is a shoe that could never fit Bacao. However, in the tradition of steel pan music, they do a heavy amount of covers. This time around there is a big West Coast Hip Hop influence with covers of Game & 50 Cent’s “How We Do”, Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg’s “Nuthin But A G Thang”, and Tupac’s “Got My Mind Made Up” all of which take on new energy and lend themselves to the BRSB steel treatment. Bacao puts another certified dancefloor filler on their resume with their cover of Claudja Barry’s uber Disco classic “Love For The Sake Of Love” which they flip into a dubbed out affair aptly changing even the title to “Love For The Sake Of Dub”. Pulling from the contemporary smash hit section of Hop Hop they cover Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and “Love$ick” by Mura Masa & A$AP Rocky. Then they go very unexpected with “Stranger Things Theme” where they take the synth heavy theme song to the hit show and give it a more hypnotizing tone than the original.

Dead Oceans just announced "Into The Blue" the new full-length album from Aaron Frazer - a solo soul artist who also serves as the drummer for Durand Jones.

"Introducing" has been worn out around my house since 2021. We just can't get enough. In fact, Aaron Frazer (Brooklyn, New York) opened the door to Holy Hive and various Big Crown Records artists.

But it has also made me open to listening to a lot of older soul. For example, last December Vampisoul reissued Marie Queenie Lyons "Soul Fever" - originally on James Brown's Deluxe label.

I woke up the other morning and immediately was sent on an emotional rollercoaster. Big Crown Records was releasing another Holy Hive (Brooklyn, New York) album! Holy Hive was no more!

I'll focus on the positive. Paul Spring and Homer Steinweiss have created another gem of folk-soul or whatever you want to call it. And we've been lucky enough to get four releases of beautifully crafted music.

I'd be remiss if I didn't name-drop similar artists: Me and My Friends, Surprise Chef, and Aaron Frazer.

Pencapaian langkah terbaik dan gerak cepat Thee Marloes cukup membuat kejutan tersendiri. Trio soul/funk/jazz asal Surabaya ini punya dua kabar baik. Pertama, mereka baru saja melepas maxi-single “Midnight Hotline” dan “Beri Cinta Waktu”, kemudian yang kedua lahirnya rilisan baru tersebut sekaligus mengkonfirmasi bahwa Thee Marloes resmi bekerjasama dengan record label asal New York, Big Crown Records.

Meskipun baru terbentuk tiga tahun yang lalu, karya Thee Marloes berhasil mendapat antusias yang tinggi dari para pendengar musik nasional hingga internasional. Kerjasama bareng Big Crown Records melahirkan rilisan vinyl 7″ yang sengaja dilepas pada Record Store Day tanggal 21 April 2023.

Terpengaruh besar dari sentuhan istimewa R&B/cinematic soul era 70an, Sinatrya Dha”Raka” (gitar), pencetus sekaligus penulis sketsa Thee Marloes akhirnya mengajak Tommy Satwick (drum) dan Natassya Sianturi (vokal, piano) untuk melengkapi project-nya menjadi nyata. Jikala kamu menyelami karya terbaru Thee Marloes seakan gak lepas dari fragmen gabungan nada brass yang ikonik, piano elektrik yang hangat disertai funk breaks, hingga sedikit aroma ballad kian melengkapi satu dengan lainnya.

Secretariat Belmont Stakes 1973 & extended coverage (HD Version - NEW!)

About 3 weeks ago I posted Secretariat’s explosive Preakness Stakes run. This Saturday is the 3rd Jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont. While there will be no Triple Crown winner this year, it is the 50th anniversary of Big Red’s Triple Crown. This is his run in the final jewel. It is possibly the most impressive display of athleticism I’ve ever seen. Another hand ride(Turcotte didn’t use his crop), and a 25 length victory. Chick Anderson with the famous call, “...and he’s moving like a tremendous machine...” Red was unbeatable that day, breaking Sham physically and spiritually, as he suffered a broken leg(not fatal, he was able to be saved) trying to keep pace with Red. Secretariat broke the Stakes record that day, and 50 years later, it still stands. Happy Anniversary Red! 

P.S. A lot of the farms let you take tours and you can “meet” the various stallions/mares. Secretariat was retired to Claiborne Farm where he lived out his life being loved and doted on by his fans. He is one of two horses to be buried in an actual coffin(he and Man O’ War are the only two to have actual coffins) and one of 5 buried complete at Claiborne. I wish I could have “met” him. I know people that had and they said that he knew he was special but was always gracious and kind(some stallions are not - looking at you, Palace Malice).
